The solution to our SMTP server / outgoing mail problem

Recent security-related revisions to our ISP's system (ATT-YAhoo) have required users to verify 3rd party e-mail accounts.
We learned, after several weeks and dozens of false starts, that the characters in Apple mail's account information fields (accessed via mail preferences: i.e. the Description field, e-mail address, user name, etc.) ** must be entered in lower case **
Upper case characters will generate a "rejected by server" error message. Eliminating upper case characters from all of these fields corrected what had become an extremely frustrating problem.

Thanks for the tip!

Time Warner/road runner technician cannot figure out m youtgoing (smtp) email connection. No way of authenticating the smtp-server.nyc.rr.com. The Apple=software on my new Mac mini is too advanced for TW help site. They told me to solve "smtp-server problem" though MAC mini help site.
How can I get the smtp server to work so that I can send out my emails on my mac-MAIL program
    Irene Schmied

what is the smtp server info they have told you to use?
in Mail>preferences>accounts, make sure your TW account is selected in the left hand side of the window, then go to the Account Information tab, then go to the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) option at the bottom of that window, click on it, and go to Edit Server List, what is showing as server name? an if you click on Advanced, what is the server port, is SSL checked, and is authentication set to password, and if so do you have the user name and password entered?

  • Why is Mail asking me for the name of an smtp server for an email address that doesn't exist?

I've migrated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion on a new Mac, but in trying to use Mail on ML, it keeps asking me for the name of an smtp server for an email address that's never existed. The addy has my user name correct, but the server part of the address doesn't exist, or at least I've never used an email address with that provider. On ML there's no plist file for Mail, so nothing to delete there. What else can I do to get Mail working? The only other option I have is to abandon Mail as being crippled and useless, and use Postbox, which for it's price (US$9.95) is an attractive option. OTOH, I've paid for Mail after all, so it really ought to work. Any clues as to what I can do to stop its nonsensical behaviour? How do I file a bug report?
    TIA.

    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Container.plist
(Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library", since the ~/Library is hidden on ML)

No. It is simply a conduit to send to other computers/iOS devices.
You really (really, really, really) should send that suggestion here -> http://www.apple.com/feedback/icloud.html
I have and I urge others to do the same.
Agreed!  It would be nice to edit photos from the website.  As it is, it's very easy to ADD photos to Photostream.  I use Aperture, and all you do is click a button at the top of the screen.  However, you cannot delete photos individually... go figure.  To me, this is a stunning omission and makes the service much less useful.

  • Mail to blocked SMTP server stalls mails to other SMTP servers

    Hi,
I have a particularly weird problem.
In Mail.app I have a Mobile Me account, a personal IMAP account and an Exchange account (working over IMAP etc. as it's Exchange server 2003 so I don't get all the fruity Snow Leopard/Exchange goodness).
The problem I have is this- in the office they block access to external SMTP servers (quite rightly).
If I send a mail through my Mobile Me or personal IMAP account and forget to tell it to use the internal work SMTP server then Mail.app will sit forever trying to connect to the external SMTP server and never time out (or if it does timeout it must be more than a few hours).
This isn't a huge problem in and of itself. However from this point on any mail I send will sit behind the stalled e-mail in the queue and never go out- so even my internal mails hang around not sending.
The only indication of this is the non-stop spinning wheel on the sent items folder and the never-ending 'Connecting to smtp.me.com' in the activity window.
The only way to resolve this is to go to the activity window and cancel all connections to the offending SMTP server. At that point the 'Outbox' folder will appear in my folder list and show me all of the e-mails it hasn't sent. I then have to open each one individually and click send again, at which point they go out (provided they still have the correct internal SMTP server selected).

    Ernie,
Thanks for the response. I have previously seen Mail.app fail to send and bring the message back up telling me this- but that usually happens quite some time after trying to send, if at all, and I don't recall ever having this error happen in the office (where they are blocking these ports).
I have had similar issues when travelling and trying to send through hotel networks that typically block port 25- even then I rarely get a failure message (note that this has been happening both on 10.5.x and my clean install of 10.6.x)
    I did check to see if the network here was doing some spoofing on SMTP ports but it isn't;
    #####:~ #####$ time telnet smtp.me.com 25
    Trying 17.148.16.31...
telnet: connect to address 17.148.16.31: Operation timed out
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host
    real 1m15.019s
    user 0m0.002s
    sys 0m0.003s
I get the same 1m15s timeout on port 465 & 587, yet Mail.app never seems to give up trying.
I tried sending to an external SMTP server without SSL to see if the behaviour was any different- but after 15 mins it's still trying so I guess not.
    Weird.

  • Roadrunner outgoing mail problem

Since my comcast account was changed to a Roadrunner account, I have had problems with my outgoing mail on my powerbook. I have no problem while at home hooked up to my RR cable. But when I travel and am on the hotel internet access, I can receive with no problem but cannot send via RR using Mail on my MacOS system. I must always go to the web based RR acount or use my seldom used .Mac account. Any ideas why I can't send email out. I am using smtp-server.tx.rr.com; port 25 no authentication, unchecked SSL.

You can try changing the Server Port from 25 to 587 for RR's SMTP's server when traveling and not connected to the internet via RR and if this doesn't work, you need to check with the hotel's front desk or with the hotel's internet service provider for their required settings when using an SMTP server that is outside of their network.
Since hotels have business and other types of travelers that take a notebook along and need access to their email accounts including sending messages with an email client such as Mail that requires using an SMTP server, certainly the hotel and/or the hotel's ISP is aware of and takes account for this but maybe not.
I don't travel as much as I once did but in my experience with some recent travel staying at a hotel with Ethernet internet access only in the room and wireless network access in the lobby area, after I logged in to the hotel's website that is provided when first connected and launching a browser, the hotel provides a password or passkey when checking in for gaining internet access via their network and internet access provider and after entering the required password, I was able to send messages with .Mac's SMTP server using Mail which is authenticated separately but I use 587 for the Server Port.
RR does not have or support an authenticated SMTP server so using 587 for the server port may work and if not, you must check with the hotel's front desk or with their internet service provider that should include technical support for their required settings.

  • Iphone 4 smtp outgoing mail problems

    Hi,
I am trying to set up the outgoing mail with the iphone, however it fails everytime.
My mail server doesnt accespt smtp requests from external Ips, so in the past on my Treo phone
I had a vzwmail.net account and used that to send my mail out.
On my blackberry i had no problems, however on the iphone i cannot send mail.
My collegue who has att iphone has to use a att smtp server for his outgoing which works fine.
I tried the smtp.vzwmail.net with my [email protected] but this no longer seems to be working.
I was told to try hostname: outgoing.verizon.net with port 587
however then it asks me for a usename /password.
I have tried my cell number as username, also my Myverizon username and password , all which fail.
How can i resolve this and be able to send mail.
    Thanks

  • Problems using smtp server in Mail

Hi, I'm using Mail on my iMac (Leopard) with a POP account for my incoming mail, and an smtp-server for the outgoing mails. Everything works fine.
Now I've also bought a new MacBook. I setup the Mail account exactly the same as on the iMac. I can recieve mails, but not send them? When I use Connection Doctor in Mail I get green markers for both incoming and outgoing servers. It says that the connection with the smtp server is fine. Still when I try to send mail it gets stuck in "Sending...", no error messages, nothing.
When I go back to the iMac, I can still send without problems.
    Anyone have any solutions?
I can add that if I connect my 3G module for mobile internet to the MacBook and change the smtp server accordingly to that service provider, it sends mail without problems.

UPDATE: I was able to set up the account using Eudora, and it worked fine. I guess it means that there's something funny happing with Mail.

  • Tiger Server Outgoing Mail Stuck In Queue

We are running Tiger Server 10.4.7 at our small school. All our incoming mail is suspended in queue. Our outgoing mail is just fine.
I looked in the mail log and it shows a zillion:
postfix/local[3144]: fatal: main.cf configuration error: mailboxsizelimit is smaller than messagesizelimit
We have no limit set on the size of messages that can be received...so what gives? In Workgroup manager we have 0 set in mail quota for everyone. From serveradmin/maintenance/mail queue I tried to resend..but to no avail. Anyone have an idea of how to get the incoming mail flowing?

  • Can no longer authenticate SMTP server in Mail

After updating to 10.4.3, the httpmail plugin stopped working in Mail, so I downloaded it again and reinstalled it. Unfortunately, as I have read in many other posts, httpmail doesn't work well with 10.4.3. That part I can deal with. However, Mail was then not responding to a POP Road Runner account. It wasn't sending or receiving mail, but it didn't give any errors. It just did nothing. I would have to force quit whenever I wanted to quit the app.
I deleted the Mail preference files, but still it didn't work. I then reinstalled Mail from the Tiger DVD and started from scratch, only I now cannot send mail through the POP account. When I set up the new account, it says it cannot connect to the outgoing mail server, even though it is the correct one (I've double and triple checked with Road Runner). What's going on? I've tried both ports 25 and 587, but still no luck? Road Runner tech support was less than helpful, saying maybe it's a problem with the router, blocking port 587, but there was never a problem before.
    Can anyone help???

  • How can we map a file in the recepents file in smtp server

    hai all,
how can we map a file to teh recipents file in smtp server configuration.
because i didnt hard code the email id there so i has to kept any file or any variable so can any one help me out.
    thanks,
    Rajesh

    Hi There
You can try to use SSIS expressions in your DTSX package which reads the values from the file and then populates the recipient field. This would require some script tasks to read the data and then populate the variables used in the SSIS expression.
    [https://www.google.com/search?sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&safe=off&site=&source=hp&q=ssisexpressions&btnK=GoogleSearch#sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&safe=off&source=hp&q=sqlssisexpressions&oq=sqlssis+expressions&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=9137l9524l0l9847l4l3l0l0l0l1l522l522l5-1l1l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&fp=67c17c5b88ef2530&biw=1440&bih=799]
It could be easier to configure a distribution list on your exchange server or domino server, and then send an email to the distribution list email address. Then you could manage the recipients from the mail server.
Another way to achieve this, is to put a prompt in the data manager package to pass the recipient email addresses, and then pass that value to script logic. In the script logic it would call a stored procedure with the dynamic input and send the mail.
You could use the SMTP relay functions from SQL server.
There are various options available. each option has pro's and con's you will need to decide which is better and easier to manage.
    I hope this helps.
    kind Regards

  • OSX 10.8 server outgoing mail on hold

    Hi,
I'm trying to figure out how to put the outgoing email on hold until authorization,on server 10.6 there where a simple checkbox for that, but on 10.8 I really don't know how to do that.
The only thing that I made for now to control the outgoing mail is the "always_bcc".
    Thanks in advance.

I will just warn you here that it is often very difficult to make an Open Directory server unless all computers are running identical version numbers of Open Directory.  So if you're having trouble with this make sure you are running the same version on all your platforms.
This is not true for the client machines, just to make sure that the Master and Replicas all play nice with one-another.
