The sound on my Macbook Pro does not work.

The sound on my Macbook Pro does not work.  When we press the volume buttons, the sound icon pops up, but the bar is full with a small "Does not work" circle below it, and nothing happens when I hit volume up or done.  I went into system preferences, but there aren't any options there that I can see to change it.

"Unfortunately, it doesn't provide any help for a MacBook Pro, other than indicating to call Apple Support" (sic).
Au contraire. TS1574's title and affected products are thusly:
"Troubleshooting issues with no audio from built-in speakers on Macs
Products Affected Mac mini, MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac"
As a result, the instructions of the article are relevant. To be sure, follow those steps, the last of which is to contact Apple.
So, by way of reminder, here are the steps to troubleshoot the audio on your MacBook Pro. There is no red light, so the port is likely fine. Headphones work, so clearly your sound card is fine.
1. Ensure an incorrect version of OS X is not installed. If one is, then reinstall or erase/install after backing up your data.
2. Remove any external audio devices from USB, firewire, etc.
3. Open Sys Prefs > Sound > Output
If Internal Speakers is listed, select it and test again.
If Digital Out is listed, confirm again that all external audio devices and cables have been removed.
If mute is selected, unselect it.
If the volume slider is low, raise the volume.
If the above simply doesn't fix it, the issue may be a corrupted plist. Apple Support might be able to help troubleshoot the issue further, per the last step of TS1574.
I hope it gets resolved for you. Good luck.

  • The sound on my macbook pro is not working

The sound on my macbook pro is not working. When I increase the sound, the icon appears as if everything is working, but no sound comes from the speakers. Earphones don't work either. I have tried a PRAM reset but at times, this doesn't even work. It's really frustrating having to restart my computer every time I want the sound to work, and even when I do that, theres a 50 50 chance of it working again. It generally happens after my laptop goes to sleep and I wake it up. Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it or even know what caused it?
There are a lot of discussions around the earphone jack but I have checked that. I've tried a PRAM reset which hasn't worked, and my sound output is set to Internal speakers.

  • One of the USB ports on MacBook Pro does not work.

    Hi,
I purchased a MacBook Pro in Jan '11. Both the USB ports on the laptop were working fine. Recently, I have noticed, any external device connected to the USB port, towards the battery side does not recognize the connection.
Any solutions ?. Is this defect covered under warranty ?.
    Regards
    Anil Madan

    Anil,
    Try resetting the SMC.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • ICloud sync with MacBook Pro does not work

I've installed iOS 5, updated Lion to 10.7.2, marked Calendar and Contacts sync in System settings for iCloud on my Mac. However iCal and Address Book sync between iCloud and Mac (MacBook Pro) does not work though there is no problem in syncing between iCloud and iPhone. Whether I create new event or contact, change existing one or delete existing one in iCloud this change is not reflected on my Mac and vise versa. I could not find a solution in this site or in forums.

Yep, worked for me, too and now contacts and calendar seem to be syncing perfectly.  We'll see if it lasts.
    Thanks for your answer.

  • The Sound On My MacBook Pro Isn't Working

The sound on my MacBook Pro is usually fine, but today it didn't work. For example, I tried listening to music on iTunes and watch videos but the volume wouldn't work at all. When I go to turn up the volume, it seems to turn up ok, but when I try to put on some music, it doesn't work at all. I then tried using my brother's Apple headphones on my MacBook Pro, and then the sound worked normally. I really would like this fixed so if someone could help me that would be great, because I don't want to keep using my brother's headphones just to watch a video or listen to music. Thank you to anyone who helps!

    Hey
I did a NVRAM reset, and nothing happened. The sound stayed the same. Whats an audio output port, where can you find it, and where can you find the red light? When I try turning up the volume, instead of turning it up a cross sign appears under the speaker, thus no volume turns up. The menu bar right at the top of the screen - the speaker icon is not black, but more a very light grey.
    Thanks for helping though!

  • Installation of Leo on PowerBook from my MacBook Pro does not work

    Hi there
I just wanted to upgrade my old PowerBook with Leo 10.5.
Since the CD Drive is defect I just installed it over Firewire from my MacBook Pro.
I did a complete new install to clean up everything.
The installation worked fine, and I can also start the system from my MB Pro.
However, I am not able to manage that my PowerBook starts on its own.
It shows always that the OS is not found (Mac&? symbol blinking).
What do I have to do? Did already the Software upgrade and hoped that it may be a simple firmware upgrade needed...but it still does not work.
Does anyone know this problem? Help is appreciated. Thanks.

If you have the Leopard Family Pack, it will work on both Intel and PPC computers. However, a Leopard DVD that is shipped with a computer will only work on that computer.
You can install on the PB using the MacBook's DVD drive via FireWire, but not the way you tried. You were running the installation on the MacBook. It saw the PB's drive as just an external FireWire drive on the MacBook, so it set it up as another bootable drive for the MacBook, with a GUID partition table. The PB cannot boot from such a drive. It needs a drive with APM (Apple Partition Map). A MacBook can format a drive with APM, but can't install OSX on it.
You have to use FireWire Target Disk mode in the opposite direction. Put the Leopard install DVD (the black retail one, not one that came with the MacBook) in the MacBook's DVD drive and boot the MacBook into target Disk Mode (hold down "T" while booting). Connect the PB to the MacBook with a FireWire cable, and boot the PB while holding down Option. When the arrow pointer appears, select the DVD and boot from it (click the large, right-pointing arrow). After choosing the language, select Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu. Select the PB's hard drive (all the way at the left, not the volume indented below it) and select the "Partition" tab. Set "Volume Scheme" to "1 Partition" and click the "Options" button. Choose "Apple Partition Map" and click "OK". Set the volume name and do the partitioning. Quit Disk Utility and continue with the installation. When it asks you to restart, it means the PB, not the MacBook (which is just acting as an external DVD drive).

  • MacBook Pro does not work

I am very frustrated. To make a long story short, my dog knocked down my macbook and it got destroyed. I purchased all the parts on Ebay .   i bought all the parts on ebay. Here is the issue. The parts i purchased from ebay are brand new and work. the last issue that i had was with the keyboard. so i bought a new keyboard replacement from factory brand new. After installing the new keyboard, i do not know what happened to the laptop but it does not work properly anymore.
    Here are the issues:
    1. The computer becomes overheated very fast
    2. the computer takes a long time to load when starting
    3. the keyboard does not work
Here is another issue: the airport card is brand new yet the system does not pick it up.
The computer worked perfectly until i replaced the old keyboard with the new one.
i tried to do a diagnostic and it does not work. the computer freezes during the diagnostic. it does not finish and the computer overheats. feel so frustrated.  i was so close to finally fixing my laptop. i am lost.
macbook pro unibody mid 09 a1286. not sure about the operating system.

Do you have a wired keyboard?
"Yes, the keyboard works. It powers the computer, however, the keyboard keys don't work."
So the power button works but the keyboard doesn't.
Pull the connector to the keyboard and start the computer using the power pads as below:
    http://www.insidemylaptop.com/turn-on-macbook-pro-laptop-without-power-button-lo cating-power-on-pads/
Be very careful doing this. Carefully identify the power pads and only touch them.

I am unable to power up my Mac pro desktop. I have tried resenting the smc and still does not work...any suggestions?

The warranty is worldwide. You should not need your receipt, Apple will have a purchase record - or at least a manufacturing date record and you should not be even close to the end of the one year warranty.
