The Speed Of This Whole Wireless Thing

Right now I have an ethernet cable that comes out of the wall an goes straight to the computer. I have a great connection and have downloaded .zips as fast as 356kbs. Im real happy with it.
I was thinking about getting a base station and to go with the airport extreme card in my imac.
Am I going to be disappointed in my internet connection if I do this?
  Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Richard,
I don't think that you will be at all disappointed with the speed of an Airport Extreme network for internet use. I have recently abandoned my mass of messy cables and gone for a fully wireless network using an Airport Express. The download speeds from the internet (I have 2Mbps broadband) are excellent and I notice no difference from my old 100Mbit cabled network.
As Lanny and iFelix quite rightly point out, the speed of Airport Extreme is well in excess of your internet connection by 5 - 10 times in real world use, so it should not be a limiting factor.
The only time you would ever want to go back to the cables is if you needed to transfer a VERY large amount of data over your LAN on a regular basis - we're talking a whole iTunes library or some dvd disk images here.

I have just became an Apple Developer and new to this whole developing thing. I became an apple developer to support what I'm doing.I just graduated high school and became a self learning video producer. I created videos since I first got into high school and that was my major. I'm planning on making a podcast channel. What I'm really asking is, how do I create an app for my website for older version iOS device (at least iOS 3 or iOS 4)???

  • How this "Router" wireless thing works

Hey guys, I have a couple of questions:
    1. I just purchased a Macbook, about 2 weeks, and I want to connect it to my cable modem (Motorola SURFboard) of course without the wires, so I'm guessing I need a router. I know the part about connecting the ethernet cable into the router, but will my Dell desktop still be able to go online? What routers do you guys recommend?
    2. What broadband ISP are compatible with Macs? I have Optimum Online, and I am trying to connect my noteboook to the modem, and its not working.

Yes, you need to get a wireless router if you want to connect your Macbook wirelessly.
I am using the wrt160n, a wireless N router from Linksys, to run a Macbook and a desktop PC, and so far so good.
Your MacBook comes with a wireless adapter, so once you setup a router connecting wirelessly should be no problem (fyi, linksys' set up instructions were quite easy to understand for a non-technical person like myself).
As far as your Dell desktop is concerned, I gather from your message that you have been connected by hard wire to your cable modem. You can continue to connect your Dell by hard wire which will now go into the router. Alternatively, if you want to run the Dell wirelessly you will need to get a wireless adapter for your Dell (assuming that it does not have one).

  • How do you change the speed of a detached audio clip?

I have a piece of detached audio.  Video Frame rate is 23.98.  The piece of Video above it is Video Frame Rate 24.
How do I change the speed of this detached audio clip?

Nope, the Automatic Speed did not work.  I exported the XML, and then ran it through X2Pro to try and get my AAF, and it still spits out conform warnings/errors on those same spots.  Automatic Speed apparently did nothing helpful to my situation.  (Can Anyone explain Automatic Speed?)
Will have to try going through Cinema Tools per the similar issues noted in this conversation: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/344/28007
Curious to see what FCPX would do with this media, importing the 24p file to a 25 Project cause a noticeable shift in both time and pitch.
I imported the time coded audio separately, and played it against the obviously speed and pitched changed video with embedded audio. The files did not sync.
The audio remained in time and pitch, while the video didn't. So the audio tc doesn't seem to effect playback in FCPX, but video definitely does, and it seems rather buggy.
So, if your video is 24.0 and your audio is 23.98 and you are in a 23.98 timeline, FCPX might be changing the speed of the video without really reporting it. Resetting speed doesn't do anything, hitting "automatic speed" screws it up a bit more (it goes the wrong way). Changing the speed to something like 96% (FCPX reports 96% but I know it's really ((24000/1001)/25) which is just short of 96%. Turning off the "preserve pitch" checkbox actually pitched the audio back to normal.
I didn't create the 24.0 vs 23.9 media that you have, but perhaps you are having similar issues, or a different combination/permutation therein.
But to answer your question, the time coded audio was not changed, only embedded audio.
    and
But here some notes which makes things hopefully clearer.
Resampling and changing playback speed are two totally different things.
Samplerate for audio is the same as fps for video (not dpi for video) so let's call it sps.
You can record audio at any sampling rate. But let's take 48 kHz and 32 kHz here.
Record 60 seconds. Once recorded both files as stand alone files will play 60 seconds.
But forced to play back in a NLE timeline with a fixed sps of 48 the first file will playback correctly. The second one will play at 2/3 of the time (32/48). The other way round the 48 sps file will play longer in a 32 sps timeline.
Now for those poor guys who have to work with NTSC:
A real world second is not a second in NTSC video world. Its 1001/1000 seconds.
So selecting a 48k sps audio preset in a timeline preset means that a real world audio of 60 seconds is only 1000/1001x60. That means that those 60 seconds are only 59.94 seconds long. Its too short.
One way - if you stay strictly in NTSC - is to record audio with 48048 Hz. This way a real world 1 second audio will match a 1 second NTSC video.
Next option with BWAVE files is to change the playback settings in the BEXT header of the file. This won't resample the file!!!
Now about the TC. BWAVE doesn't have a TC in a way you're used when handling video. It has a timestamp in the header. This timestamp contains the Samples after Midnight. Based on that the NLE will convert this to TC which can be displayed. So in NTSC world this might give a wrong interpretation.
For example if you have a "Start TC" of 00:10:00:00 (thats what you see on your audio recorder) it means that using 48kHz the timestamp is at 600x48,000 = 28,800,000 samples. Since the real sampling rate in the timeline though is 48048 Hz you have to divide the source stamp by this number. This results in 9.99000999000999 minutes. So for a 23.976 fps project this is a TC of 00:09:59:10.
So setting the Bext header and/or iXML chunk to the correct playback speed will keep everything intact. Again this is without resampling!
Using an AIFF there aren't these options.
So you can edit all the stuff without resampling when using BWAVE. But resampling will happen when you export a final movie.

  • Trying to understand this whole Reader Extension product

    Hello,
I'm trying to get a handle on how this whole extensions thing works. We're using LifeCycle Designer 7 to generate forms (both and xdp and pdf). We want our users to be able to access data from ODBC connections and potentially from WSDLs. Our clients (right now) only use the free Reader 7.0.x.
It's my understanding that the pdf in this case needs to be 'extended' in this case. So say we purchase an Extension for this form for $x. Is this a valid scenario.
Pdf/xdp is generated. The pdf is 'sent' to an Extension server for some sort of encryption that the free Reader understands and thus enables the data access capabilities. Then the user is free to use this form and it's data access capabilities in perpetuity. Basically it's a one time fee for that one form.
    If this is true, then...
Where is this Extension Server that encypts the form?
Does the free Reader have to validate against that or any other server to enable the data access capability?
What happens if the form is changed?
This might be it for now.
    Thanks,
    Bob

Generally the license is based on the number of users. I have about 550 users in my organization (DON in New Orleans), and I paid a fee based on that number. Theoretically the "unlocked" forms are to only be used by the licensed users. That is a bit difficult to do.
I will unlock a Navy form for my users, but its hard to prevent them from getting passed around to users outside my sphere of influence.
I usually put in some read-only statement that makes it difficult for others to use it. That is mostly for my own self-protection.
Actualy even after a form is unlocked, minor adjustments can be made to the form without it needing to be passed thru the reader extensions product. I've changed field attributes and even added and taken out fields with the form extension still intact.

  • Whats the speed of the 100GB Hdd Option upgrade

    Hello
Im looking getting a second mini & passing my one onto a pest "family member". The apple site had the option of a 100G hdd. What would the speed of this drive be.

"If the system were being used for video (as an example) then rotational speed of the drive is barely relevent to system performance as long as the drive is capable of sustaining the necessary data stream (a 4200rpm drive can typically manage 30fps DV)."
Maybe in iMovie, but ask any FCP user, and they will say 7200 makes all the difference in the world. I have only a 700 MHz processor, and that has nothing to do with whether or not I can capture and output video. However, if my drive has a bump in it, all **** breaks loose. The only time I ever wish for a faster processor is when I start a render... and then I go to bed.
But try scrubbing video on a 4200 RPM drive. Then try a 5400, then a 7200, the a couple of 7200s in a RAID. Then three, then four, then five...
Rotation speed makes a HUGE difference in video. Most of my time is spent editing, scrubbing, audio scanning and doing things that really work the drives. Bay 3 at work feels a heck of a lot slower to me than Bay 1 or 2. Bay 3 has two 7200 RPM drives in a RAID, and Bays 1 and 2 each have a set of 5 drives in a RAID. Yet Bay 3 has the fastest processor in our building.

  • How do I change the speed of the Final Cut Pro X "Ticker" Title option?

I am moving from iMovie to Final Cut Pro X.  I used to use the "ticker" title option all the time in iMovie, but when I utilize it in Final Cut Pro X, it scrawls really slow and only shows the first line of text before the video ends.  How do I adjust the speed of this option?

This Motion template effect isn't very useful at the moment.
Sadly, the only way of changing the speed is to modify the effect in Motion.
The speed is designed to get the word 'Information' at the default size and default typeface across the screen over the duration of the clip. If you add more text, or change its size, the text will not move off the edge of the screen by the end of the duration of the generator.

  • Can you improve the speed of my CSV Reader and Writer?

hi all, i'm trying to develop a CSV Writer and Reader. i have done a good work to implement the special character and quoting it, it's also support multi line value but it's incredibly slow.
can someone help to make it faster?
here it's how to use the writer

the format is CSV, i try to explain better what i'm doing.
our client asked to save acquisition data with header description in an excel readable format, i've decided to use .CSV and not .TDM because it's a simple txt file and we never used .TMD but i will propose to use it.
after some research on the internet i've found nothing to handle .CSV in CVI except from this csv_parse but i've found it difficult to be maintained so i've write it by my own hand.
i've written two example of how to use my function to read or write and i've copyed my function used to read and write.
in the write function i check with FindPattern if the string to be write contain some special character, if i find this i have to quote the string to respect the standard RFC4180 and if i find a quote i have to double it. aftere i've done this check i write the line in the file.
in the read function, that is more complicated, i:
check if the first character is a quote.
if it's not i copy the string until the delimitier or until the end of the line.
if it is i have a string with special character inside so:
i find the first quote in the string. when i've found i check if it's follwed by another quote. this means that in the starting message i was writing a single quote.
if it's not followed by another quote but it's followed by a delimiter or a carriage return i've finished the special line.
if i don't find it it means that the special quote have a carriage return inside and i have to check the next line. before checking the next line i save this in my string.
after this loop i check in every string if i have a double quote and i delete one.
the main problem is in the speed of this, i'm acquiring data at 1000 S/s with 8 active channel for 60 second so i have 480000 data to be stored, divided in 60.000 row and 8 column. to read a file like that my pc stay "locked" for 15 second or more.
i've tried to use the arraytofile function and it's extremly fast and i can also put header because the function can start from the last position in the file but the filetoarray function start from the beginning and i cannot read the header correctly. also if i'm using the european CSV with semicolon as delimiter with arraytofile i cannot select the semicolon but only the coma

If you bought a Mac and got AppleCare with it, within 2 years of buying the TC, the TC is covered, too.
I have to admit that this $500 unit was the first to apparently junk out. Reset the TC. See [Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728].
Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
If all else fails, take it to your local Apple Store or Authorized Repair location, they may be able to determine whether the disk is dead.
If it is, they might replace the TC for you. If not, they won't repair it, but if the electronics are ok, you can replace the HD yourself, if you want to. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2542983

The above is what the bar says. It's been a while and wondered, maybe Apple changed the format for forums. Then got this nice big blank canvas to air my concerns. Went to school for Computer Science, BSEE, even worked at Analog Devices in Newton Massachusetts, where they make something for apple.
The bottom line is fast CPU = more FPU = more headroom and still can't figure out why the more cores= the slower it gets unless it's to get us in to a 6 core then come out with faster cores down the road or a newer Mac that uses the GPU. Also. Few. I'm the guy who said a few years ago Mac has an FCP that looks like iMovie on Steroids. Having said that I called the campus one day to ask them something and while I used to work for Apple, I think she thought I still did as she asked me, "HOW ARE THE 32 CORES/1DYE COMING ALONG? Not wanting to embarrass her I said fine, fine and then hung up.  Makes the most sense as I never quite got the 2,6,12 cores when for years everything from memory to CPU's have been, in sets of 2 to the 2nd power.  2,4,8,16,32,64,120,256,512, 1024, 2048,4196,8192, 72,768.  Wow. W-O-W and will be using whatever I get with Apollo Quad.
Peace to all and hope someone can point us in THE RIGHT DIRECTION.  THANK YOU

    Xeon 8 core - E5.1680v2
    Xeon 12 core - E5.2697v2
I read that the CPU is easy to swap out but am sure something goes wrong at a certain point - even if solderedon they make material to absorb the solder, making your work area VERY clean.
My Question now is this, get an 8 core, then replace with 2 3.7 QUAD CHIPS, what would happen?
I also noticed that the 8 core Mac Pro is 3.0 when in fact they do have a 3.4 8 core chip, so 2 =16? Or if correct, wouldn't you be able to replace a QUAD CHIP WITH THAT?  I;M SURE THEY ARE UO TO SOMETHING AS 1) WE HAVE SEEN NO AUDIO FPU OR PERHAPS I SHOULD CHECK OUT PC MAKERS WINDOWS machines for Sisoft Sandra "B-E-N-C-H-M-A-R-K-S" -

Would rather wait and have it done correct than released to early only to have it benchmarked in audio and found to be slower in a few areas- - - the logical part of my brain is wondering what else I would have to swap out as I am sure it would run, and fine for a while, then, poof....
PEACE===AM SURE APPLE WILL BLOW US AWAY - they have to figure out how to increase the power for 150 watts or make the GPU work which in regard to FPU, I thought was NVIDIA?

  • Aargh!  What do I have to do to speed up this thing???

    Hi,
Hopefully someone can help me. I'm using the trial version of Lightroom 1.0 and have tried everything to speed this thing up but nothing is working. This application would be absolutely brilliant if it weren't so dog slow. The whole point is to speed up the workflow but at this rate the time wasted is thoroughly frustration.
Okay, what's happening. First, when I'm in the Library module culling photos, there are all kinds of little issues but the two big ones for me are when I delete a file, the entire library resets itself to I don't know what kind of sequence. Delete a file and Lightroom jumps to a different file order and lands on a file that wasn't the next one in the sequence. So I have to close Lightroom and reopen it to have the files sorted the way they originally were when I was working on them. This I just don't understand.
Also, in the Library module, going from file to file, I am always getting the "Working..." thing coming up so it takes several seconds for each pic to come up. WAY too slow. When in the Develop module, I am constantly getting the "Loading..." thing coming up. This slows everything down to a snail's pace and is frustrating!!
I have tried all the tips I could find here and on Lightroom Extra (fabulous site BTW!). I have turned XMP off, moved my Library to a faster drive, rendered standard previews to larger than my screen size on import, and rendered 1:1 previews. None of these changes have done anything for the speed. Why???
What else can I do? I have 2 megs of RAM and a fast enough system that I can easily run multiple other photo processing applications simultaneously without any speed problems at all. So what is the problem with Lightroom? I had been trying out Beta 4.1 with exactly the same issues. I thought Lightroom 1.0 would solve these but alas, I am in the same predicament. I have tried it on 2 different computers and have the same problem.
Can anyone help? What do I need to do to speed this thing up to workable speeds? I would really like to use this application and would be ready to buy it now if I could be sure this isn't the speed (or lack thereof) that I will be faced with on a regular basis.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

Go to sysinternals.com and download "Process Explorer". Install this to some reasonable location.
When Lr seems to be wedged, switch to Process Explorer and choose the Lightroom process in the top frame. This will show all the associated subprocess, threads, memory use, open files. Basically everything about this process.
You can save a snapshop of the Lightroom process, as well. In my work it helps if customers take a few snapshots over 1-2 minutes and send them in. I don't know if Adobe has their own way of doing this.
This app also helps you look for any other processes that might be there you are not aware of. So many apps and drivers install little "helper" processes that may interact poorly with other processes. I'd certainly turn off any "real time" virus protection if you have it enabled. No virus checker is ever 100% accurate, and running one is always a trade-off between security and convenience. At least keep it from scanning your Lightroom library directory. There may be other suspect apps that can be inspected with this tool.
Some notes based on what I've read so far:
    - XP and OS X users please, please, please do NOT "defrag" your hard drive. You do not need to do it. Modern file systems already know how to lay down files optimally over time, as long as you have some free space and memory available. In fact, you may be making things _worse_ since a defrag may move files around from the "hot" areas that NTFS and HFS+ maintain to make file retrieval faster.
There are some rare cases where a defrag is necessary, but few of us here will hit those cases. Let the filesystem and OS do the job it is designed to do. Instead, take that time and go work on some photos!
    - OS X users, what do you have in your Startup Items? Why? Windows users, why so many things in your Taskbar? Clean that cruft up. Many of these little apps that come with device drivers are poorly written little value-add widgets that do not give you much, may not be the best written app and may simply interact poorly with other apps. Minimize the chances of this happening by at least disabling or removing most of them while testing Lightroom for performance problems. This is part of moving from the known to the unknown to solve problems in a logical manner.
    - Make sure you have enough free space on your main partition(s). Different filesystems have different requirements, but a modern OS needs a decent chunk of free space (it does NOT have to be contiguous) and a chunk of memory to maintain a proper caching file system. A hand-waving value is make sure you have some smaller percentage free /at least/. Of course, those of us with big drives have to worry less, even done to 1%!

  • My performance is very slow when I run graphs. How do I increase the speed at which I can do other things while the data is being updated and displayed on the graphs?

I am doing an an aquisition and displaying the data on graphs. When I run the program it is slow. I think because I have the number of scans to read associated with my scan rate. It takes the number of seconds I want to display on the chart times the scan rate and feeds that into the number of samples to read at a time from the AI read. The problem is that it stalls until the data points are aquired and displayed so I cannot click or change values on the front panel until the updates occur on the graph. What can I do to be able to help this?

It may also be your graphics card. LabVIEW can max the CPU and you

Help!  I recently upgraded to OS 10.9.4 from 10.6.8, and now when I want to send an email to a group in my contacts I am no longer able to select the group as a whole.  I have to select each address individually.  This can't be right.  With 10.6.8 I used to be able to double click on the name of the group and they would all be selected.  I've also noticed that my address book is now called "contacts."  Thanks in advance for your help.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).

    Hi
Time needed can depend on several things.
    • less than 5 GB free space on Start-up (Mac OS) hard disk = Redicolous long times AND a DVD that most probably will not work OK
Medicine - I never go under 25GB free space
    • Use of strange file formats into iDVD - can force it to de-code first then re-encode - this can take long long times
    I use
Video - StreamingDV as from miniDV tape Cameras - or QuickTime Movies Converted to StreamingDV
    Audio - .aiff 16-bit 48 kHz - (no .mp3, .wma etc)
    • Use of old Mac - My G4 600MHz took about 24 hour per hour movie. my dG5 - about 2 hours per hour (I use Pro Quality encoding)
    • Pro Quality encoding - takes about x2 to process a movie

  • Internet from time capsule 1/5th the speed of other wireless network

    Hi...
Here's the problem. I have a time capsule 500gb set up in my house and connected via ethernet to another linksys wireless router and then via ethernet to my ASDL Modem. The problem i have is that the internet connection (when tested on Speedtest.net) is aprox. 1/5th the speed of the linksys network. any idea's why that might be?
I have my time capsule set up in WDS mode with an 802.11g Airport Express to distribute the network through the entire house. The speed is the same if i'm next to the time capsule or in any part of the house so i don't think its a signal strength thing. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

No, you are not using a full IPv6 system.. you are simply making sure the link to the TC is able to use IPv6.
Go to the Networking preferences and bring up the wireless setup, advanced. TCP/IP
Change the IPv6 setting to link-local.
Ensure ipv6 is set in the TC to link-local.
So click on the TC in the airport utility.. click on edit.. click on the internet tab. Click on internet options.
    Then test your speed again.
If you have issues still give us a link speed when you are sitting in the same room as the TC.
