The spinning colorwheel come up frequently on my MacbookPro, how do i speed up my computer?

I have a MacBookPro that i use for DJing.  I frequently get the spinning colorwheel.  How do i stop that from coming up so often.  I've increased my RAM from 4GB to 8GB.  My original 320GB HD was replaced by a 500GB HD at the Apple Store when the original one failed.  At this time I cannot upgade to OS X Yosemite, until my DJ software is certified to run on it. I'm running OS X 10.9.5 right now.
I saw in other posts a link to EtreCheck to get info from my Mac.  I've pasted it below.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Why does the spinning wheel come up every time I open an application

Every time I open an application, I get the "spinning wheel" for an extended period of time.  This is a VERY FAST computer and this slows me down terribly.
For instance:  I just opened iTunes to sync my iPhone.  When I opened the software I got the wheel, when I tried to select my iPhone, and yet again when I tried to hit the "sync" button.  This is more than is typical, but it happens EVERY TIME I open EVERY application.

You need to check the software you run.
Some officially supported and sold Mac versions of software use Wine for porting in some fashion or another.  If some program you are running is spawning these Wine processes, its probably buggy and not shutting down correctly.
How to figure out which are Wine and which are not...?
Well if its a Cider ported game, you just see if there is a Cider logo on the game.
If its Wineskin ported, theres no super easy way to tell, depending on how much its been modified, but you can look inside the app (right click and "Show Package Contents") and go to Contents/MacOS and see if Wineskin executable is in there.  Unless its a very old version of Wineskin it shouldn't be able to hang like that without major issues int he Windows software running in it, and I don't know any any company would release it if it was that buggy.
If its WineBottler Ported, you'll notice quickly because it launches X11 and runs the windows under X11... of course not all X11 apps are Wine, but if you have a program that launches and runs in X11.app then you can look inside it at Contents/MacOS to see if its Wine related.
It could also be Crossover, or a Crossover port of software... you'd have to dig around inside of its app too to see if it looked like one of those.

  • How do i find what is causing the spinning colorwheel

How do I find the cause of the spinning color wheel and correct it ?

While you are using Activity Monitor look at System Memory as well: Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used
If there is little or no "green" then your system will be burdened by having to constantly offload memory to disk. This would also explain frequent appearance of the "wait cursor".

  • Can't get the spinning colorwheel to go away from the drop down menu

I'm trying to attach a file to an email.  When I click on the attach button and the drop down menu comes down and when I get the cursor over the drop down box the color wheel comes on and won't go off.  I've restarted the computer multiple times and it still happens.  How do I clear this problem?

  • I am getting the "spinning colorwheel of death" every time I open mail

I open mail and get the color wheel. Mail will not respond. Ever. This has been going on for two weeks. Is there a way to rebuild mail? I am away from home and do not have my disks nearby. In the meantime, I can check my .mac mail on the web. any suggestions?

You haven’t mentioned whether you’ve tried to force quit Mail and open it again. One way to do this is Apple Menu > Force Quit, select Mail there (it should say “not responding”), then click Force Quit.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations, and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Finally, try launching Mail under the following conditions (you may need to force quit it first if it’s running) and post back with your observations:
    1. Holding the Shift key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
    2. With no Internet connection.

  • HT1539 This is great, although the new Macs come without a CD drive. How do i get a movie that's digital copy comes imbedded in a DVD into iTunes?

How do you get the Digital copies that come on a DVD onto Itunes with the new iMacs with no DVD or CD slot?

It may be possible for the movie studio to help you by providing a differe type of code for the digital copy.

  • Whenever I try to buy something, my computer prompts me for my password to then confirm billing information. I know my password is typed in correctly, but the same prompt comes up again. I can't complete purchases, even though this computer's authorized.

It's really frustrating because I can only buy music from my phone.
I've tried intentionally typing in my password wrong and it tells me my password's wrong then, but otherwise the prompt keeps coming up again. I don't know what to do; I double-checked that my computer's authorized.

To get rid of "pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet", click on Safari in the Menu bar, and select Preferences. Next select Extensions. Delete all of them. Restart Safari.
The first step in addressing the black screen is an SMC reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months.  Initially, I did not have any problems.  Now I have a problem with Yahoo Mail.  I can open my account, but when I try to get at my mail, 2 out of 3 times I get the spinning ball that never stops.  Now what?

I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months without having any problems with it. Recently I am having trouble with my Yahoo Mail.  I can open it fine, but 2 out of 3 times when I try to actually open a message, the spinning ball comes on the screen and does not stop. Sometimes, I can log out or force quit and come back in to my account and use it.  Other times, I run into the same problem.  Any suggestions?

    Killerfinch wrote:
My new yahoo account nestles comfortably in iCloud on the mine iPad.
No, your Yahoo account is not in iCloud (which only handles iCloud mail), it is in Yahoo, and the Yahoo mail account is on your iPad.
But the MacBook Pro will have none of it! I write this question now as I fear that I will be totally demented very soon and unable to formulate my thoughts clearly!
Get the correct settings for your account from Yahoo and set it up manually.
By the way, I also find the "password" issue problematical. It seems Apple want my Apple password rather than my eMail password. All very confusing.
That would depend on what you are trying to do.

  • I have a word document that keeps stalling with the spinning ball sign - how can I stop this?

Have a 2009 Macbook Air. Never given me any trouble before. But I am working on a long word document (docx) - 200 pages of text - and after 5 minutes of working on it it starts to stall and the spinning ball comes up every time I try to type or edit. I have tried resaving it as a doc. I have transferred it to my main IMac where the same problem occurs. No other word documents are doing this. This document is a novel, three years in the making, which is due to go off to publishers in a few weeks time so I am rather worried that it is going to be unrescuable. any suggestions?
I have a time machine and so on so it is all backed up, but i want to be able to work on it!
    Please help!?

    Try this.
Open the document and select and copy a few pages, say ten pages.
Open a new blank document and paste the pages you copied into that.
Save it with a new name.
Work on those new pages to see if the problem has disappeared.
If this helps, continue breaking up the large file in to smaller chunks and working on them
You can of course later reverse the process and merge the files into one new one.
This suggestion is based on my experiences with large Word files. Breaking it up in to smaller chunks does two things. First, if there is any corruption in the old file, the new copies might escape that. Second, the Mac is faster handling the smaller chunks.

  • Help - the spinning wheel is going to kill me.

I am a powerBook G4 user with OS X3.9. It took forever just to get to this posting because anytime I am in my Safari Browser (1.3.2) the spinning wheel comes up on every click, anytime i try to scroll the page, any time i try to fill in an empty field box, etc. It is now starting to come up when i open a new finder window and inside Adobe InDesign CS. It is really hindering my work.
I have tried to search through these forums for help and while there are messages addressing this... i must be ******** and do not understand or see any solutions. I did try booting up with the original system disk and used the diagnostics to scan the computer for any problems. 100 % okay.
I feel i have enough ram and disk space that this should not be happening. I purchased OS X 4 but am afraid to upgrade as this problem will probably get worse. It is very hard to getting any work done! Please help!

    You're Welcome QueenB_7706!
    'Disk = 80BG/3GB available"
    Thomas Bryant is correct.
You do not have enough available HD space. Create as much as possible ASAP, as this situation can cause corruption , and possible loss of data!
For tonight, plug the power adapter into the PowerBook, and let it run all night, without sleeping.
That may clean out some large temporary log files.

  • What is the portal that comes with webcenter suite 11g?

    Hello,
What is the portal that comes with webcenter suite 11g?
How to retrieve the content from UCM using this portal?
    -Scott

    Scott,
The JCR adpater can be configured against Oracle Content Server(UCM), file system and Oracle Portal. This gives you only the read feature on the repository. However the web center frame work also provides you the Document Library Task flows with both Read/Write capabilities and other capabilities like recent documents, search etc. The task flows can also customized to suit your UI requirements as well. In addition to this there is a content presenter Task flow available where Business Users can display formatted content from UCM on web center page. This is similar to the content presenter portlet available inside WLP.

  • After I tried to install Mavericks on my Macbook Air, June 2012 the the drive began to fail, with the appearance at more and more frequent intervals of the spinning beach ball, I had to restart even  after I wiped the drive and reinstalled Mountain Lion

After I installed Mavericks I could no longer shut my Macbook Air (mid July 2012) down, except by force quit,I was using an Apple Tv screen and Apple wireless keyboard. After that the spinning beachball kept appearing at more and more frequent intervals, even after I had wiped the drive and re-installed Mountain Lion from the Apple site. It is now almost non functional. and just three months out of warranty

Backup your data as soon as you can.
MacBook Air computers sold between June 2012 through June 2013 are known to have a high SSD failure rate and Apple is replacing them for free.

You should maintain current backups.  Given the known failure rate of your SSD that is especially important.
