The spinning rainbow disk keeps appearing and my laptop keeps hanging

Hi everyone
I've been using this macbook pro for almost a year now and just yesterday the spinning beach ball of death started appearing more frequently than usual. Everytime I click something or try to type something (even this post) the rainbow beach ball would appear and make my laptop hang. Also, I can't play YouTube videos properly anymore as the graphics would be disrupted halfway through. I have no idea why or how this problem suddenly cropped up and I would really appreciate if someone could help me out here! Thanks!

If you are having problems with a brand new MacBook invoke the warranty and contact AppleCare.

Software Update: Java for OS X 2013-002 1.0
This update, upon booting, has caused my disk space to fill up and my system freezes up. The same happens to my coworker's computer. We both watch the remaining disk space decrease and the "spinning rainbow appears" and we must restart. What do we do?

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

iPhoto opens but then the spinning rainbow wheel appears and I can't do anything. I have opend iPhoto with the Option key pressed and rebuilt the library and it still happens.  I want to at least access my photos and copy them to an external drive. Anyone have ideas on how to get to them?

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • My macbook pro keeps freezing up - i get the spinning rainbow for 20-30 min at a time ... (mid 2009 w/Maverick - re-installed after wipe)

I have the mid 2009 macbook pro and it was very slow and freezing all the time so I took it to the Apple store - they "wiped" it clean and re-installed the software it came with and Mavericks.  It has 138.95 gb out of 249.2 available.  I get the spinning rainbow all the time and sometimes it doesn't stop for 20-30 minutes at a time.  It's not just one program - it can happen anytime.  I've had to power off with the power button too many times and force quit programs repeatedly.  I've done the repair disk including done in restore and in safe modes.  I'm not sure if Mail is clogging it up or what.  I don't know if I just need a new computer or if this is something relatively "simple".
I mostly use the computer for websites, blogs, and some video.  I also have photoshop and do use that a bit as well.  Would adding more memory help this issue?  Not sure which way to turn - thanks in advance for any advice.

You can boot into your Recovery partition by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting. Once there, use Disk Utility to verify and, if needed, repair your hard drive. If the drive can't be repaired, then you know that you need a new hard drive.

Your iMac is trying to go into safe.  This usually happens when it has detected an issue with the OS or file system.

You likely corrupted the iPod by interrupting the update process.  Try connecting to iTunes and restoring it there. If iTunes does not recognize the device, try connecting it in recovery mode using the instructions in this Apple support document.

my mac is running slow, the spinning beach ball constantly appears. it seems that when i am in the apple store with fast wifi its a bit better. genius at the apple store checked the hard drive, it's all fine. what can it be? can it be a software issue with the wifi?
also i noted that it has only been doing this since quite recently, before it was fine
    please help!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Is there any reason or my why cursor is stuck on the spinning rainbow wheel?

Lately my macbook has been freezing, and I'm thinking that it's being overloaded. Most of the time the cursor is stuck on the spinning rainbow wheel, but it will eventually return back into the arrow. It's currently stuck as the spinning wheel, but I am able to click and access sites. Is there anything I should do to get this checked?
EDIT: When I open a new tab, the cursor goes back to normal. Is there any reason why it is doing that in the other tab?

    Hi,
Use the PC KB and hold Windows key + r key at bootup.
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • CS3 on Mac OSX (the "spinning rainbow of distress..." :)

    hi guys,
I'm running the CS3 suite on a  new iMac (OSX 10.6.8), and since I tried to do an online update, I've been having horrible problems with the "spinning rainbow" mac cursor.  I tried re-installing to undo the update (DW only), but the spinning rainbow is still a curse.
i don't use the other apps much, mainly Photoshop & Bridge; they seem ok.
This seems to be taking place in one current site definition in particular, and mostly with some HTML newsletter projects I'm designing.  These pages typically have a lot of the older deprecated <font> codes in them, and have a number of image files (30 or so) referenced to files actually on the server, rather than on the local site (on my mac).
So, every time I attempt to scroll down the page with the vertical drawbar, it halts half-way down and I have wait 10 sec or so for the cursor to return.  Every time I make a change a change in code (split screen) and click on refresh or click anywhere on the design window (to refresh), I have to wait about another 10 sec.  So every change, I make, every attempt to navigate to a new part of the page, or click anywhere different in the document, I get this extended wait time for the cursor to return to normal, which is quite frustrating.
The page is not real huge, maybe 25k in size.
The only other "out of the ordinary" formatting, is I had to break the code lines up into shorter lines because the email broadcast system will not broadcast long lines of code, so, I just go into code view and put code breaks in the page so DW doesn't keep wrapping longer lines to contain a huge amount of characters.  I break the code lines visually so the end of the code line is broken neatly about the width of the code window page.  This all should have absolutely no effect on the cursor.
If anyone has any ideas on how to circumvent this problem, please reply!
(i'm running a demo version of Lil Snitch firewall, but I've given DW access rights, so don't think this is the issue)
    thanks!
    Gary

These pages typically have a lot of the older deprecated <font> codes in them, and have a number of image files (30 or so) referenced to files actually on the server...
My gut tells me all those absolute refs to images on the remote server are causing DW to choke as it attempts to refresh that newsletter page.  Have you tried working offline (no internet connection) to see if that makes any difference?

does anyone have a spiraling rainbow image that appears and seems to slow down the computer?

Everyone does at one point or another. Please be a little more specific about when this occurs. Also you may find Spinning Beach Ball of Death useful to track down the reason yours is occurring.

  • What is the cause of the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) and how can we fix it?

What is the cause of the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) and how can we fix it?
I get the SWOD using Safari, Mail, Google chrome, Firefox, Mathematica, and other programs. This cannot be a browser plug-in issues as other forums suggest. I suspect a windows process at the root but I don't enough to know how to trace. Does anyone know what's causeing this epidemic?

I'm having a similar problem. Someone PLEASE HELP!
I'll start with just an example of what I've been facing. During the composing of this post, when I switched from Firefox to Word, I had to wait 60 seconds before the spinning wheel stopped and I got a cursor. I then copied one set of Etrecheck results, switched back to Firefox, hit Command-v to paste and had to wait 45 seconds or so for the spinning wheel to stop. And the paste operation didn't paste until I hit Command-v again (with no wait this time).
    Here's what I've done:
I tried three times to run a scan with avast! and all three times the scan was unable to complete.
I restarted holding down Command-r and it found and fixed many permissions, but found no problems with files.
I ran Etrecheck in a "Safe Boot" and in a normal startup and there were two things that were tagged as "[failed]" in the normal startup:
    Launch Agents: [failed]com.logmein.LMILaunchAgentFixer.plist Support
    User Launch Agents: [failed][email protected]
I apologize for taking up so much space, but here are the results from both Etrecheck runs:

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
