The story of iphoto and 2 external hard drives.

My computer storage was filling up fast due to all my photos, so I bought an external HD. The people at the Apple store set it up for me to where my music and my photos are not just backed up by the external but rather are stored on it thus saving space on my computer. Now I have a new external and I want it to work as the old one did. How can I do this myself with out taking both externals to the Apple store? Currently my new external is running through the very first TM back up.

Drag the music and photo libraries to the new drive, launch iTunes and iPhoto with the Option key held down, and point them to that instance of the libraries.

  • IPhoto and External Hard Drive ?

I am going to move my iphoto library to an external hard drive so that I can have more space on my internal drive. I travel for work and take hunderds of pictures during each trip. While I am away I want to be able to put the pictures on my laptop then when I return move the new pictures to my "master" file that is on my external drive. Then clear out my internal and do it all over again....
My question is, can I keep adding to my iphoto folder on my external drive or do I have to move over each new file after each trip resulting in many photo files on my external drive, when I really just want to have one master file. Maybe I am going about this the wrong way, does anyone have a better maybe more streamlined idea of what I can do?
    Thanks

  • Iphoto and external hard drive issues

I have backed up my Iphoto onto an external hard drive and then upgraded my iphoto and can't access any photographs. How do I restore my iphoto library from the external hard drive?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

If both have Firewire ports then you can accomplish your goal by using Target Disk Mode. If this is not possible then you can do using an external drive or if you have a local network connect both to your network and use filesharing between the two computers.

  • After iPhoto upgrade i can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive, after iPhoto upgrade i can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive

I was just about to order a photo book, using photos stored on an external hard drive. I organised the book and pressed 'buy'. IPhotos instructed me that I needed to upgrade and so I went on the ASpp store, bought the upgrade and installed as directed. I then used the iPhoto Library upgrader as directed.
After the iPhoto upgrade I can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive. I am able to access the photos stored on my internal hard drive - the remainder (including the photo album) seem to have vanished into thin air.
    Any suggestions please?

What format is the external drive?

You may need to prepare yourself for a "World of Hurt" from your wife...
Since the average 0.9 megapixel JPEG photo file of normal graphic complexity stored at a high quality compression setting is 125-135 KBs in size, I would have to assume any QT video files you created of more than a fraction of a second in duration were most likely saved as "reference" files to only be 50-150 KBs. Basically, a reference file is q QT (MOV) file that tells a video player how to play data that is still stored in its original source file container(s). For instance, you could trim and merge a number of files together and save the result as a "reference" file that takes up very little room on your hard drive. Or, you could post fles to a server and create a "reference" file that is small enough to be sent as an email attachment that plays the uploaded data on someone else's computer as long as they are connected to the Internet. Unfortunately, for these reference files to work, all of the resources referenced within the file must continue to exist in their proper locations in order to be found and played by the reference. Since you did not indicate what "but they won't play" really means here or how you actually "moved" your iPhoto library files to the external drive, I can only make some "educated guesses" at this point. (BTW: for future reference, iPhoto has a built-in function that allows you to copy your library to one or more back-up locations and then connect to them by default when iPhoto opens or switch source libraries at will within the opened application.)
If you created reference files and saved them to an external drive, you should be getting an error message telling you the app needs to know where the source files are located so the reference file can re-connect to the resource data. If the original files were also saved, then simple navigate to the source files in oder to tell the app where they are now located. If the source files were deleted as part of the reformatting process, then you are up the proverbial creek whithout a paddle with little or no hope of doing anything about this issue. (I.e., reformatting and then re-installing a system drive usually means you would have little hope of recovering the specific "lost" data you want as there is always a good chance that some of the data segments were overwritten during the process.)

I just purchased a new computer that runs windows 8 and it doesn't want to recognize the time capsule as an external hard drive (ie doesn't show up under my compter).  I've downloaded and run airport utility, but it seems to have a hard time finding the time capsule...maybe one out of 10 times it will find it.
What's more, when I look under network infrastructure under the control panel, it shows my Broadcom ADSL centurylink Router...so I'm wondering if my modem/router combo is overriding the router function on my timecapsule and the time capsule is not being used as a router...
    Any help much appreciated!

In this case the TC should be in bridge mode.
Win8 is still problematic. Try using ethernet instead of wireless. I think the drivers are poor still and it is well worth having a try via ethernet if you haven't already.
Otherwise you will need to wait for apple to release bonjour for windows 8 and airport utility.. which is not out yet.
Also make sure the windows is set to home, not work or public.. even turn off the firewall.
Open windows explorer and type the TC ip address into the address bar.. (none of which is perhaps the same.. I gave away windows at vista.. shudder)

  • I have recently purchased an iMac from the Apple store. I previously had a windows computer and I transferred all my important files and music from the old computer onto an external hard drive. I've plugged the hard drive in and I can't seem to locate it!

    Hi everyone,
Before I set up my new iMac, I transferred all my important files from my old windows computer (pictures, documents, iTunes etc) onto an external hard drive. I had no trouble using and locating my hard drive on my old computer, however I'm having great difficulty finding it on my iMac. The external hard drive is plugged in with all wires connected and correct. I've tried all the USB ports and I still can't locate it!
I just want to transfer everything from my hard drive to the iMac!
If anyone could help me locate and guide me through the process of using an external hard drive on an iMac, then that would be brilliant!

Try using Migration Assistant following this guide:

There is advice in this document for using Migration Assistant from Time Machine or other hard drive.

Most probably, you have a 'private'-folder = part of an AVCHD-structure on your root-level of that drive.
Put it back into its folder (or any folder) - done.
    Don't rip AVCHD-folders apart!

  • Is there a way to use the time capsule as an external hard drive only and disable the wi-fi function ?

Is there a way to use the time capsule as an external hard drive only and disable the wi-fi function ?

    Yes.
    1) Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on your existing wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
    2) Go through the standard configuration suggested by the setup "wizard"
    3) Then manually turn off the wireless function using AirPort Utility

  • How do I change the desktop Icon for an external hard drive?  I have gone to "Get Info" and tried dragging and dropping  several formats of pictures and the icon changes to the generic image of that file type.

how can I change the desktop icon for an external hard drive.  Using LaCies and Dimple hard drives.

One of the things I've found with OS X (at least with Snow Leopard, which is my first excursion into OS X), is that all too often the thumbnail displayed on a file, whether a file created or one downloaded, is a false thumbnail. That is, when you do a Get Info on the file the icon in the upper left is the generic icon for that file type, rather than the thumbnail displayed in Finder. Makes it a bit difficult to copy.
Apparently Finder uses Preview in the background to generate the displayed thumbnail without actually creating one.
What I've resorted to doing, particularly with graphic images, is to process them with GraphicConverter - I have its prefs set to automatially add thumbnails and previews. With an individual file this means opening it in GC and doing a Save As. However, a much easier and faster way is when there are two or more such files; I put them in a common folder and drop the folder onto GC. GC then opens them in a catalog view, in the process adding real thumbnails and previews to each automatically. Doesn't take long to do several hundred files that way.

  • Connecting Ipod and External Hard Drive Source at the Same Time

As I have a laptop computer with limited hard drive space, I connected an external hard drive source to store my music and photos and other non essentials. I received a 5G IPod for Christmas and the only issue I am having is that my IPod will not work if it is connected to my computer at the same time as my external hard drive. This poses a difficulty for me because I do not have the space on my computer to store the music that I would like to add to my IPod. If anyone knows how to resolve this issue, I would be eternally grateful. Please forgive me if this topic has already been addressed.

as of right now this cantb be fixed.... i have the same probelem... we and thousands of other people are going to have to wait until this relase a fix for this probelem... sorry i feel for you

  • Backing up events in iPhoto to external hard drive

We have photo's saved on PC's and on a MacBook Pro, in iPhoto (v11). We have all photo's from the PC's backed up on an external hard drive, in folders broken down by month/year.
On the Mac in iPhoto we also now have new photo's sorted by events, named by month/year. Now we'd like to copy these events to the backup hard drive to back them up.
We don't want to copy all the events, just some of the events. It appears we can only copy/backup the entire iPhoto library, not just certain events.
Is this correct? Is there a way to only copy groups of photos, labeled in the same event, to an external hard drive?

ok this worked.....thanks.....we weren't exporting it properly, figured it out....

  • Managing photo storage on my iPhone/iPhoto/Pictures/External Hard-drive

Hello, I need some help with managing photo storage on my iPhone/iPhoto/Pictures/External Hard-drive.
    Background:
I have 1,200 photos/videos on my iPhone 4S on the camera roll and need to delete them to save space. Most are photos/videos of my new baby which I would be devastated to lose, so I want to be 110% sure that I have them backed up properly and accessible.
I frequently hook my iPhone up to iPhoto to download all of the latest photos to iPhoto.
I have done Time Machine back ups and just did a latest one yesterday.
I would like to save my camera roll into a folder on my hard-drive so that all of these photos are in one place in case I need to access them (and not spread across different folders like in iPhoto).
My Mac (Macbook Pro - circa 2009) is now telling me that my 'Starter Disc is nearly full' and won't save all of the photos from my camera roll.
    My questions;
Are photos stored both in iPhoto and Pictures folder, and if so are they duplicates?
I've heard that Time Machine only backs up full libraries and so cannot be used to access individual photos - is this true? If so, how do you access individual photos/files from my external hard-drive?
How and where should I delete older photos from to save space on my Mac - iPhoto or Pictures? (once I know how to access them from my external drive if needed).
How do I delete all of my photos from my iPhone camera roll in one go? - I can only see a way to delete the 1,200 of them individually.
Going forward where is the best place for me to synch/upload my photos for medium term storage/access on my Mac?
I would consider myself quite intelligent but when it comes to this topic, I'm happy to be spoken to in very simplistic terms!
    Thank you.

Import the photos to iPhoto - then select the photos in iPhoto and export (file menu ==> export) to the desired location

  • How do I put pictures from iphoto onto external hard drive

I would like to transfer most of my pictures from iphoto to and external hard drive to free up space.  I was sold a WD elements and said its a plug and play then drag onto drive.  When I try to drap photos to the external drive it won't let me.  Anyone have any suggestions?

This is a brand new drive? Make sure it is formatted so you can read and write from a Mac. (Plug and Play could mean P&P on Windows.)
With the drive connected, run Disk Utility. It's in Applcations / Utilities. Select the drive (on the left) reformat it. This will erasse everything on the drive - but I assume it is empty since you could not write to it.

  • How to: copys pics from iphoto to external hard drive to share

I scanned about 10,000 historical family photos into iphoto, and now I'd like to gift each of my siblings with a copy of the entire group of photos on a portable memory/storage device. I have chosen to use a portable (external) hard drive (called the LACIE "little disk") so the images will be reliably safe in storage and yet remain easily accessible to the user.
I've never done this before and would be so grateful for any instruction. I'm a little too intimidated to wing-it with a project this big and important to me.
What are the steps to export the entire group to an external hard drive?
One of my siblings uses a PC, and another uses a Mac....does that make a difference?
My thought is that I just have to
    1. create new folder on desktop
    2. go into iphoto, "select" the pics from the LIBRARY>PHOTOS that I want to share
    3. transfer to the newly created folder on my desktop
    4. drag the folder to the Lacie drive (already formatted for PC and/or Mac).
    5. all done!
Is it that simple?? (please say yes). If so, How do I check to verify the pics are readable (openable?) on the hard drive?
Thank you for your time and your patience...and of course, your expertise!
    Cindy

** To clarify, I have FIVE siblings so I will be making FIVE individual transfers...I bought FIVE "LUCIE" hard drives....I reread my entry and I didn't want to confuse anyone about that detail. Only one of hard drives will be used by a PC person, the others will each be for MAC users.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Here's how I would proceed:
1 - for the PC users leave the formatting of the hard drive as FAT 32 (most come that way). If it's formatted for Macs then reformat it as FAT 16 (Macs can't format 32). For the Mac users make sure the format is OS X Extended (journaled).
2 - Add a folder to each little disk.
3 - in iPhoto select the photos you want to send and use the File->Export->File Export menu option. Select the following options: Kind: Original; JPEG Quality: Maximum; Size: Full Size; File Name: whatever of the options you want. If any of the original file names are the same you'll need to use the Sequential option so all the files will have a different file name.
4 - hit the Export button and select the folder on the little disk as the destination.
Do the above for each of the little disks to use used.
