The Strange Case of the Missing Network Icon

Can anyone help my buddy Tom - who is running a G4 iBook with OS X Panther? He is unable to get onto his wireless network and here is the problem in his own words:
"Had a moment to muck about in the iBook drive, following data crumbs from the all-pervasive Network software. Apparently, all that spinning of the drive over regions containing bits and bytes of the application managed to cobble together enough of Network to launch an e-mail, which I immediately determined had to go to you. This is strictly a spit-and-string enterprise, similar to a baling wire and soup can exhaust system fix, and likely the only e-mail I'll get off until I complete an entire system restore. Think of it as a faulty telephone connection - you can hear me, but I can't hear you. So, don't bother to respond, as your e-mail will probably languish in my Inbox for the time it takes me to resurrect OS X.
What brought me to this point is my reasoning Network isn't a stand-alone application like a word processor, but rather a "network" (clever, eh?) piece of software with files strewn through other software so they can access various aspects of it. For example, World Book Encyclopedia accomplishes a software update without launching Safari; connecting to its mother ship via but another piece of Network that happens to reside within the program. I guess this approach is what put the "i" in iBook, and it seems to work pretty well...until moments like this. Perhaps Steve Jobs outsourced to Hansel and Gretel to create a new marketing twist.
Anyway, I've talked this all up with a number of people, and the universal response seems to be; "Huh? I've never heard such a thing.". I even managed to mightily confuse Dave and he's got an awful lot of Mac expertise. But the real kicker, when explaining how I reasoned it all out, is when I mention the key to my understanding was when I noticed the missing Network icon. That's when their eyes glaze over and it's apparent they can't quite wrap their brain around the idea. I've deduced how to cajole the Finder to reveal this Archimedean moment, and included a pair of attachments so you, too, can share in my AHA!! revelation. Running this all past Dave had him agreeing I seem to have a handle on it, but the sheer complexity of all those .exec files squirreled here, there, and everywhere still had him scratching his head.
Interestingly, I have to coerce the Finder to display the icon example; you can't simply click it into existence. I do it by plugging in a travel drive, opening same, then ejecting it. The Finder then defaults to what you see (the word Network with no icon).
Speaking of attachments, I was so tempted to wade through all 70 (70!!) e-mails in my inbox, but was fearful my MacGyvered patch would fail before getting this off to you.
Time to fade back into the black hole from whence I came. When I close Safari it'll relinquish its tenuous grasp on the Network .exec file it's hacked to."
Any ideas on what's wrong and how it can be fixed? I'll see that they get passed on to Tom.
G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   iMac

Before the mid-1980s, networking might have been implemented with a lot of goofy little routines (.exec's if you must) calling one another. About that time the CCITT (an international telecommunications standards committee made up of Academic and Industrial representatives) did a lot of work abstracting and then standardizing the functions that various parts of a network perform.
The CCITT refined the notion of a Layered Network Architecture and specified the types of activities performed in each layer. Shortly thereafter Apple implemented Open Transport and delivered it into the marketplace in System 7.5.3.
Apple networking has been very well-behaved and under control since then. It does not tend to "get lost" or "lose track of things". It really is very good. With only a few limitations, you can connect Macs running 7.5.3 through 10.3.9 and have File Sharing work without regard to what versions are talking to each other.

  • The Strange Case of the Missing Shared Devices...

    Dear Forum,
I am currently having intermittent trouble with the connection of shared devices.
The network consists of a MBP, Qnap TS109 and a Canon printer hooked up via LAN to a WAG200G. The Qnap serves music to a PS3 (WLAN) and the Mac and also serves as a TimeMachine back up device.
The problem is that every so often I lose my Shared Devices in the Finder side-bar. They just disappear.
I have managed to reconnect by playing with the Network connections preferences, but as I suspected (due to exhausting the permutations), this solution has come to an end and now I cannot urge them to reappear (unless I restart (which is a solution, but not an entirely satisfactory one)…
All devices have been set to use static IP address (none conflict).
The Mac’s settings are as follows:
    TCP/IP-
Configure IPv4 Manually: then my IP address.
Subnet and router are both correct as I can connect to the Qnap & WAG admin pages and internet (I’m not sure if that is a correct test of these settings, but the numbers are correct).
    Configure IPv6: Off.
Under DNS : I have entered both DNS servers as per the instructions of the ISP (I have been with them for years and these are correct).
WINS- (I don’t know what this is but…)
NETBIOS Name: the name of my Mac (All uppercase (don’t know why, but looks definitely windows (ish))
    Workgroup: (blank)
    WINS Servers (blank),
802.1X & Proxies: everything is per the default setting as I have never touched anything in these options.
    Ethernet-
    ID: My Mac MAC
    Configure: Auto
Speed, Duplex and MTU have never been touched, but I am assuming that Auto covers these.
Under Network (System Preferences), then Location: Auto, then next to Status: Connected (currently active and correct IP)
The WAG is the only thing on this mini network that sets DHCP, I could change this to disable as everything has it’s own Static IP, but is there any need?
(I hope I am getting the terminology correct and not inadvertently creating confusion.)
The PS3 sees the Twonky server in the Qnap, so I am not sure if that is an issue, it doesn’t appear to be.
    So why the missing devices?
None of this would actually be a problem if it was not for the fact that once the Qnap disappears from the Finder side-bar, TimeMachine does not back up (yet I can connect via a browser to the Qnap, even if it is not present in the side-bar).
The problem is I feel as though my thinking is a bit blinkered as I am only concentrating on the Network connection aspect, yet I am afraid I am not entirely sure what else I should be considering. That is to say what is causing the Mac hooked up to a perfectly adequate connection/ functioning network to suddenly cause it to drop the devices, yet retain connection by other means?
Unfortunately a forum member had exactly the same problem but sadly removed the query from open questions.
It goes without saying (but there is no harm in me saying it anyway), but any help would be appreciated.

    Bump
This recently happened to me as well, actually it's happened for awhile, and only recently have begun to try to find the answers. Did you ever find out what happened?
Also seems like this post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11367180
But that has no answers posted either. Perhaps a reformat and stick with 10.6.2, which is what I think the last version the "Shared Devices" automatically showed without deliberately mounting a network drive.
My situation is pretty much the same, "Shared Devices" do not automatically show up on the left sidebar. If I know the IP address or netbios name, I can mount network hard drives: Command + K and smb://ipaddress
My Computers, I have an iBook G4, which used to automatically pop up; a Windows7 computer that used to automatically show; and an Ubuntu 10.04 computer that would show up as well for screen sharing and smb.
Possible culprits include: netbios/smb problems, mDNSresponder/Bonjour problems, other networking config. No settings permutations have fixed the problem.

  • The Strange Case of the Empty Folder

For several days, I have been chasing gremlins, some of my own making. But this one is different.
Suddenly, when choosing a filter that requires time to load the thumb preview, I found it very slow, but even more to the point, I lost control of the curser. It became very small, not even an arrow and jumped around the screen, if it moved at all. The preview load was taking forever, so I tried to dump it. No dice. I had to use kill Process, if I could even get there.
So  gremlins are now extending to the video card, right? Maybe too much ram to PS. Nope.
Anyway, after a lot of mucking around with this or that, it occurred to me that the Hard Drive light didn't work while all this is going on. Not writing to Scratch? Let's look. Yep, scratch has data. So I opened it and found two files, one the PS file and the other some strange temp file with a long string of numbers. Properties said -0- data.
After some deliberation, I decided to exit PS and delete the strange file. I reopened PS and voila! All is well! Smooth fast preview thumbs, cursor runs, I could exit the filter no problems.
So, I guess the moral here is if strange things are happening, check scratch! Even an empty one seems anathema to PS.
Hmmm, maybe it was of my own making. Who or what put it there?
    Curious people want to know.

Thank you for the detailed "how to".  Much appreciated!

    Generate a shortcut using Ctrl-Alt-Shift+B
Note:  Doing so produced the message "Alt+Shift+Ctrl+B is already in use and will be removed from Image > Adjustments > Black & White if accepted."  I chose [Accept and Go To Conflict], and left the Black & White feature with no shortcut.
I initially generated a 16000 x 11000 pixel file, RGB Color, 8 bit, containing White.
Running the filter via the 4 key shortcut popped up a Progress dialog that ran for a minute or so.  All the while cursor motion was completely smooth.  Task Manager showed about 70% processor utilization across the 8 cores.
The cursor would change to an arrow while over the dialog, then to the spinning wheel when off it.
Once the operation completed, the dialog disappeared and the cursor returned to whatever tool I had selected (zoom, move, etc.) and was smooth and normal.
I tried it several times, with 8 bits/channel and 16 bis/channel images, even with images much larger than 500 MB.  With larger images in 16 bits/channel mode I did see some slight jumpiness in the cursor motion while the Progress bar was up, but only very slight.
It appears that the thread in Photoshop that reloads the cursor is a bit delayed in running by the app being busy processing the long operation on the large image.  Cursor motion was normal and smooth in all other apps and music I was playing through Media Player was not interrupted.  Task Manager again showed about 70% processor utilization across the 8 cores.
And there were no problems whatsoever after the operation had completed.
I'm thinking you may have a glitch in your nVidia display driver having something to do with reloading cursors from within your app.
Regarding the button changing captions from Cancel to Reset, I did not ever see that in the testing above...  However, it's a known feature that many Photoshop dialogs with a [Cancel] button will change it to [Reset] instead if the Alt key is held down.  If Photoshop is switched away from via the Alt-Tab key combination, then it will stick that way until Photoshop is again made active. An easy way to demonstrate this is to go into Edit - Preferences - any subcategory, then press Alt.  Activate another running application via Alt-Tab and move it out of the way (so you can still see the Photoshop dialog) and you'll see it stay that way until you re-activate Photoshop.
I'm not sure in what way this is related to the glitch you're seeing, if at all, but it does represent another case where I see [Cancel] change to [Reset].

P.S., It occurs to me to ask:  Have you changed your Cache Tile Size in Edit - Preferences - Performance?

  • The strange case of the downloaded track...

    Hi there.
Strange stuff coming up. I've bought some tracks from iTunes, but for just three of them I got some problems. After I've put'em down into my iPod, they start playing, but after a few seconds they suddenly stuck and music skips to the next track. The weird is that on my iTunes they perfectly play and I did a CD from them, too...
I think the problem is in the tracks themselves and not on my iPod (I love it and I'd have the same c**p for the other 500 tracks, I suppose...). Even the online support couldn't help me...
    Things I've already done:
    1) RESET and REBOOT
    2) Downloaded new firmware 1.2
    3) Re-organized my iTunes library
By the way, I try to put in my iPod the same track in another audio format and of course it works.
Does anyone of you meet the same problems?
How can I convert AAC audio format protected (as I've bought from iTunes) in other different ones?
    Help me, please!
Thanks for your kindness and forgive my lenght of writing...

One way to do it, which also strips away any sort of restrictions and protections on the tracks, is to simply burn them to an Audio CD (not an MP3 or data CD) then re-import them. You can now do anything you want with the re-imported versions.

  • The Strange Case of the Disappearing Site

It's one thing after another all of a sudden. I've just opened iWeb on my desktop and found that the entire site is no longer there. This happened once before, a few months ago, and (following excellent advice on this discussion board) I clicked Spotlight and entered ‘.site’ in the little window. Top Hit was ‘Domain’, which I clicked. My iWeb site was immediately repopulated.
However, following the same procedure this time produces no result whatsoever.
    Anybody...?

After I posted my question I restarted the computer and tried the Spotlight/.site/Domain route several more times to no avail. Then I did something different on the computer and tried the route again without much hope of success - and this time it worked. No rhyme or reason that I can see.
But thanks for your suggestion, Tom. I'll remember to try that if it happens again.

  • The strange case of the disappeared mails...

I've two mail accounts set on my ipad and I'm having some funny problems...
    both accounts are POP3
first, it sometimes happens that mails downloaded AND deleted from my inbox (but still on the server) are downloaded a second and even a third time, without any chance of avoiding it. please note that both accounts are set on "remove from server if deleted from inbox" on my ipad advanced mail settings panel...
second, and more annoying, yesterday evening every mail in one of the two inboxes have been removed from the device: it wasn't simply moved in the trashbox but those mails just vanished without even saying goodbye... and of course I didn't touch anything neither on the ipad nor on the macbook that downloads the mail from the same server: everything was just like before, and something similar never happened. of course, the mails have been downloaded first on the ipad and after on the macbook, and the mails disappeared were both recent and old, the whole inbox with its 200 mails...
called Apple support and they suggested me to change the setting from POP3 to IMAP, but my provider doesn't let me for free and I prefer to download mails on the device and not leave them on the server...
    anybody has a solution/suggestion?
    thank you,
    david

         .Net API 3.3.1.2
I have C++ GUI client with grid. It shows in the grid all updates from Coherence.
I have also the 'server' application, which inserts objects into Coherence (1 - 2 per second).
I use 'near-scheme' with front set to local-scheme and back set to remote-cache-scheme.
I have 3 GUI clients connected to the Coherence and i have the strange behaviour of the clients. The insert comes to one of them three times instead of one. I've checked in the debugger and it's true. The insert really comes three times. But when i've restarted the client all became to work fine.
It's bad that i can't repeat this situation, it happens from time to time.
Does anybody get the same situation?
I've masked it by the checking key and version of object, but it's really strangely.
         Thanks.

I think it's depended on the situation described in thread CacheEventFilter: Where does the filter part apply?

Your VI has 5 case structures, which one are you talking about?
There is no while loop, please explain what you mean. Where do you want to place one?
I don't know what a "case loop" is. Can you explain?
Again, you have 5 buttons. Which one do you press?
One big problem is that your Visa resource is not wired across some of the cases, thus losing it for the remainder of the code.

The 5 and the 5S have essentially the same physical configurations in termns of size, so yes, in most instances a case designed for the 5 should work on the 5s.

  • The curious case of the missing airplay icon

    Hello everyone,
last night I noticed that the airplay icon was missing on my iPad. I didn't show up in videos, music or youtube.
When I turned on my iMac I saw that the icon was also missing in iTunes. The only thing I did yesterday was to connect my iPad to my iMac to sync iTunes.
I didn't do anything else really. That's why I figured it might be a good idea to update iTunes. Everything else is pretty much up to date and works fine. Also checked my router and wifi settings and couldn't detect anything out of the ordinary. Basically did everything people advised on the web. Resetting AppleTV didn't help either.
So right now I cannot mirror anything via AppleTV because the airplay symbol is missing on my iOS device as well as on my Mac. You probably know how much that s****. Does anyone have the same issues with airplay? Can anyone help me? I would really appreciate it!
    Take care!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    Restart your router.
    Restart your mobile device.

  • The mysterious case of the missing Bootcamp partition space

I've searched and searched, but have come up with nothing, so I hoped that one of you brilliant people could help me:
I created a 122gb partition on my Macbook Pro using Bootcamp.
After all was said and done, Windows installed and so on, Windows told me I had only 113gb on the partition.
However, once back in OSX, Disk Utility told me that the partition was indeed 122gb as I had originally planned it.
So, does anyone have any idea where those 9gb magically disappeared to? Did I do something wrong, and is there a way to fix this?
Bootcamp is working just fine, and so is OSX (aside from the Bootcamp drive icon not showing up on the desktop anymore for some strange reason, nor the Bootcamp partition showing up as a selectable start up drive), so I'm at a loss.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you are on iOS 8.2 then update to iOS 8.3.
If that doesn't solve the problem try the standard troubleshooting steps in this order:
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds). No data will be lost.
Restore: Connect your device to iTunes on your computer, backup, and then select Restore to Factory.
See here for more details on restore: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201252
