The SUID warnings with the various disk utilities - and locking up often

Hello-
I have read here in the forums that the various SUID warnings from running the Disk Utilities such as the standard Disk Utility, DiskWarrior and so on, can be ignored to a certain extent.
However, the two listed warnings below are not listed:
Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/pppd" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/vpnd" has been modified and will not be repaired.
My Macbook still locks up almost daily, and if not daily, two to three times a day. I know I can always Archive and re-install, but after backing up primarily my user files to an external drive, I am worried I will lose/data to what may be a small issue.
I know for some of the experience users in this forum, I may seem over cautious. However, I did convert to Apple back in 2004 with the brand new dual 1.8 G5, and several years later that computer just died. This is my new laptop that I am trying to provide the best maintenance, Mac-wise, as to not lost my inventory and stock photos for my work.
I do love my Macs, but I am still new to what I can or can not do to 'fix' things if needed after years of working on PCs.
Thank you for your patience and understanding with my questions and concerns.
George

HI,
See Kappy's post here. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10020001
No need to archive and install.
My Macbook still locks up almost daily
Try booting from your install disc and run Disk Utility in case the startup disk needs repairing.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
This is my new laptop that I am trying to provide the best maintenance, Mac-wise, as to not lost my inventory and stock photos for my work.
From your Finder Help Menu type in; Alternatives for backing up your computer

    Reset on my computer to install the program instantly,
    Is there any way?
    Thank you.

    If I follow you correctly, you either have or will be replacing the hard drive in your iMac. You don't have the original OS X disks nor an operating system disk.  Do you have a bootable backup? Here are some steps/options:
    1) If you have a bootable backup, install the hard drive, boot from the external hard drive, then use SuperDuper or CCC to copy the external hard drive to your new internal hard drive.
    2) You have your old hard drive, and it's not dead. Put it into an external case and see above.
    3) You don't have either a bootable backup or a working old hard drive.  You can try calling Apple Support to see if they still have the original OS X disks for your system. If they do, they'll charge a nominal price for them.
    4) You checked and Apple no longer has disks for your system. You can go to the used market to buy Leopard 10.5 disks. If you do, be sure and get retail black-faced disks, but don't get the black-faced disk which is an upgrade disk .... if you don't have 10.4 on your system, it won't work. Careful of gray-faced OS X disks as they are locked to the original system type they ship with. So a gray faced OS X 10.5 disk for a MacBook won't work on your iMac.
    5) Another related option is to buy 10.6 Snow Leopard, if your system meets requirements. This is still sold by Apple, and in the US is available online for $29.99 from the Apple store. Snow Leopard requirements are:
    Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
    6) Or you could consider Lion, via the USB stick that is sold in Apple stores. Lion requirements are:
    Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory (4GB recommended)
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
    Hopefully I haven't totally misunderstood your question, and answered something you weren't asking!

    Itunes wont download because I dont have 10.6.8 or greater. But I just installed the snowlion disk thing and my macbook is a 10.6.8 version so how do I get itunes to download?

    Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
    It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
    Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
    If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...

    Other countries...

    After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

    Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
    Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
    Restart your Mac after freeing up disk space then check Stoage again.
    Another way to view avialable space:
    Control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop then click Get Info.
    In the Get Info panel you'll see:  Available & Capacity
    Again, make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

  • HT4623 Is anyone else having issues with scaling down photos to fit the screen for home and lock screens with ios7??

    Is anyone else having issues with scaling down photos to fit the screen for home and lock screens with ios7??  Installed ios7 this morning. Tried to use one of my photos from camera roll as background for lock screen and I can't scale the photo to fit the screen.  Never had a problem before and now when I pinch the photo to get it to the right size of the screen, it won't stay that way. The photo is enlarged way beyond the screen size so it doesn't look right. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Hello, cliffiapp4.
    Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
    Here are the steps that I would recommend going through when experiencing this issue.
    Resolution
    If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
    If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
    If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
    If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
    iOS: Not responding

    Applications on my iMac OS 7.1 keeps shutting down immediately when I try to open.
    Help! I tried repair disk in disk utilities and nothing works..

    Perhaps you could try this to resolve your issue: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
    Try booting up to Safe Boot and see if you still have this issue in "safe mode." This will help you determine if the issue is caused by 3rd part sofware, or some other type of OS corruption.

  • Why are the Apple mods deleting and locking threads?

    I would like an answer as to why the mods are deleting and locking threads that have to do with the error that pervasive in the iPod 1.1 upgrade. It seems that Apple will not acknowledge it but some of us are trying to find an answer and Apple locks the thread and deletes another one. As paying customers, Apple should realize that it is us who keeps the lights on in Cupertino. I think a bit more respect to the paying customer is in order here.

    Just post your questions and replies in a calm and concise way Don and follow the guidelines within the Terms of Use;-):

    Contrary to any belief you may have I can assure you that there are no attempts of covering up any alleged bugs in software or anything else in these fora.
    Here's a reframe to your original question - The fact that the thread was locked means that the Hosts have seen the thread. It is reasonable therefore to conclude that they would have allerted the relevant people of the issue and referred them to that thread.

  • HT203176 i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities and said I need to repair disk from a cd. did that, I got volume repaired from the external disk. when I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair

    i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities (from hard drive), turned out I needed to repair disk from a installation disk. Did that, I got the volume (Hard drive) repaired from the installation disk disk. To this point, great!
    When I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair. I went thru two rounds of this.....
    Can anyone help? thanks

    Sorry guys, I don't see how to reply to you so I use reply to "me" basically.
    So the error I get is "volume header needs minor repair" and then you need to perform repair from the installation disk message.
    I did repair not verify from the disk twice. Every time ending in the "the volume had ha been successfully repaired". Then I reboot from the internal disk. Run disk utilities from it, do verify and get the same error message I got before repair. I hope this can shed some light fr you guys. Sorry I didn't include details in the original

  • Minecraft Won't Launch Because of a Java or Root Certificate Error I Started Having When I Put The Install Disk in And Downloaded Mac OSX Snow Leopard

    I need help. I recently tried opening Minecraft after re-installing Mac OSX Snow Leopard with the Mac OSX Install DvD and now every time I try to open the internet these stupid certificate errors come up and Minecraft says it can't launch because of a broken/missing root certificate

    Hello Shelby,
    Thank you so much for the details regarding the issue you are experiencing with the Snow Leopard installation.  I recommend following these steps if you are having trouble installing Snow Leopard:
    The installation wasn’t successful
    If you were unable to install Mac OS X, try the following:
    Disconnect any external devices you don’t need during installation.
    Remove any cards from manufacturers other than Apple.
    Try installing Mac OS X again.
    If you were unable to install Mac OS X again, choose Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the disk on which you want to install, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk. After repairing any problems, quit Disk Utility and then click Continue to try installing again.
    If you’re still unable to install Mac OS X, try erasing the disk before installing Mac OS X. Before you erase your disk, try copying your files to an external disk. When you’re ready to erase and reinstall Mac OS X, follow the instructions in the “Restoring your computer to factory settings” section of this document.
    I found this on page 7 of the Snow Leopard Installation Instructions:
    Snow Leopard Installation Instructions

    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Can The ASM Disk Header and Disk Group Be Renamed?

    I have a requirement to mount multiple SAN clones (EMC Symclone) of a production ASM instance on the same development server. RMAN is too slow to be an option, unless I find a white paper explaining any way to make RMAN perform a clone faster than the SAN.
    The default response is normally, "Do your clone to dedicated hardware." However, that answer is not an option for obvious financial reasons, especially since I am working with a RAC environment with ~10 development and test environments.
    The only way to do this (that I can think of) is to rename the disk header and probably the disk group prior to making it available to the ASM instance.
    I have heard that Oracle has come up with an undocumented solution for one or more businesses. I believe it has something to do with the kfed library located in $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib.
    Has anyone out there managed to do this? If so, can you share your solution or point me in the right direction?
    I know I am not the only one out there looking for a solution to this issue...
    Thanks in advance.

    This is absolutely possible. Can be done via kfed. I never found the answer searching the net and had to figure it out. Here it is in hopes that it helps someone else. DISCLAIMER.... If you screw up your disks don't blame me. If you have any questions about this you can email me: [email protected]
    The procedure is basically this:
    - compile kfed
    - dump the disk header with kfed
    - Modify the dump file
    - write the dump back to the disk header.
    ** Changing ANYTHING other than the diskgroup name will render your disks useless.
    Here is a script to do the work for you:
    for file in `ls /dev/vx/rdsk/as1_pccdw/asmdata*`
    do
    echo "Processing DATA disk $file ..."
    search=ASCDW_DATA
    replace=AS1CDW_DATA
    newlength=`echo $replace | wc -m`
    let newlength=$newlength-1
    shortname=`echo $file | cut -f 6 -d /`
    kfed op=read dev=$file | sed -e '24,24s/ '$search' / '$replace' /' -e '24,24s/length=.*/length='$newlength'/' > /tmp/$shortname.kfed
    kfed op=write dev=$file text=/tmp/$shortname.kfed CHKSUM=YES
    done
    for file in `ls /dev/vx/rdsk/as1_pccdw/asmredo*`
    do
    echo "Processing REDO disk $file ..."
    search=ASCDW_REDO
    replace=AS1CDW_REDO
    newlength=`echo $replace | wc -m`
    let newlength=$newlength-1
    shortname=`echo $file | cut -f 6 -d /`
    kfed op=read dev=$file | sed -e '24,24s/ '$search' / '$replace' /' -e '24,24s/length=.*/length='$newlength'/' > /tmp/$shortname.kfed
    kfed op=write dev=$file text=/tmp/$shortname.kfed CHKSUM=YES
    done

  • My itunes will not burn CD's...everytime I attempt to burn a CD it gets to the finishing disk point and says it is unable to burn the disk

    Each time i attempt to burn a CD, it quits right before it is finished and flashes an "error" message. if i try to play the CD it show up with how many song are on the disk, but no music plays.

    Try a different disc manufacture. I have good luck with Maxell.
    And make sure the disc is free of smudges and finner prints so the optical disk can write data to it.

  • Both time machine drive and startup disk can't be repaired by disk utilities and needs to be formatted!!??

    ok so i accidentally remove the USB while my laptop was backing up to the time machine partition on my external HDD. I plug it in again, and no time machine partition. just the other part (fat 32 partition). so i open disk utilities.. the partition is there but grayed out. so I repair it.. and it says it cant repair it i need to back it up and format it. ok great.. i tried to do that and it said it can't access the disk.. super.
    any way.. i don't know  why i decided to check my other drives and see how they're doing.. and it turns out.. my startup disk has problems.. and you guessed it.. it can not be repaired:D so i restart in recovery mode.. did it again.. and?  it can't be repaired.. i need to backup the drive and format it... (like the same problem with the time machine partition) just great! so i restart the laptop.. it safe boots.. I dnno why.. and everything is like it was.. I mean I don't see a problem with my drive.. i can do everything but that "cant repair" thing is scaring me.. what should I do? just leave it? or brace myself for a possible HDD death? I DON'T EVEN HAVE A BACKUP)
    help me i feel vulnerable

    As you have indicated, you don’t want to touch the partitions on your existing external drive because it has live files in the FAT32 partition for which there are no copies anywhere else.  That leaves you with two sets of data that are currently not backed up: your FAT32 partition and your system drive.  I suggest you need at least one more external HD for backups.
    A “backup” drive should never have live files on it because should that drive fail all the live files on it would be lost.  So you need a second external HD anyway for a proper backup scheme.
    I would partition a new disk as you have the current one and then copy all the FAT32 files form the old disk to the new one.  Then you can try repartitioning the old drive.  I would then setup a backup scheme to periodically clone the new FAT32 drive onto the old FAT32 one, using the new disk for your live FAT32 files and dedicating the old disk to backups.  You could also continue using the old disk for Time Machine backups.
    You can use Mac cloning software such as Carbon Copy Cloner to maintain the cloned backup copy of your FAT32 data.

  • SMART: DiskWarrior disagrees with Apple's Disk Utility and TechTool Pro

    DiskWarrior 4 is giving me SMART status warnings for my internal drive, specifically that the temperature is too hot, and may indicate an impending failure. This typically happens when my drive is rather busy, like doing a long backup.
    However, both Apple's Disk Utility and TechTool Pro 5 say the drive is fine; Disk Utility says the "S.M.A.R.T. status: verified" and TTP does it's check of the SMART status, with result "Passed."
    Who do I believe?
    Thanks.

    That is hot, it sounds like you have a cooling problem!
    Most drive manufactures only recommend an operating temperature of 140 F (60 C), here are the Spec's for the 320 GB WD Caviar Blue that I installed in my Early Core Duo just a few months ago as an example: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=299
    What does iStat Pro say your fan speed(s) are?
    You need to check or have your fan unit checked out to be sure the fans clean and working properly?
