The Time Machine Monster that Devoured Cleveland....Help!

My Time Machine backup file grew to monster size. How big is this monster? Read on.
It all began one quiet afternoon. Hard drive failure on my iMac. No worries. I have a Time Machine backup on an external disk.
But that external disk seems a bit twitchy. So before I do anything else, I copy it's "backups.backupdb" file to the desktop of my Macbook. Now I have two copies, just in case.
Hard drive replacement goes fine. Restore via Time Machine from the external disk does too. I'm up and running.
I erase the external drive and do a fresh Time Machine backup onto it. Everything is still good. If I want the earlier backups, the ones made before my drive failure, I have a copy on my MacBook, right? This is where the mystery takes foot.
I try to save the "backups.backupdb" folder from my MacBook to a new external drive. I connect a 1TB drive and drag the "backups.backupdb" folder to it. Several hours later the "preparing to copy" window has counted millions of files to copy. I think it was about fifteen million. The system says that there is enough space in the 1TB drive to copy that folder.
What? The original "backups.backupdb" folder was created within a 250 GB partition!!!!
I go to the "backups.backupdb" folder on my laptop and "command i" it to calculate size. This takes hours and when it's though, my system says that the "backups.backupdb" folder is 12.9 Terabytes !!!!!! I wish I had thirteen T of storage on my laptop!
The "backups.backupdb" is clogging my laptop. Is there any way to copy and save it? Or do I just have to erase it to get rid of it?

To delete huge amounts of data the Terminal is your friend. It will still take a long time, but won't go through so many steps as using the Trash and it won't block your Trash while it runs in the background.
01. Launch 'Terminal', in the '/Applications/Utilities/' folder.
02. Enter ...
sudo bash
..., and then press the '<return>' key.
03. Enter an administrators' password, and then press the '<return>' key.
04. Enter ...
rm -rf
... (make sure to press the 'space bar' after the 'f' in 'rm -rf', as in 'rm -rf ').
05. Drag the backups.backupdb folder onto the 'Terminal' window.
06. Click once on the 'Terminal' window.
07. Press the '<return>' key.
08. Wait
Next time you want to manually copy a Time Machine backup, open the backups.backupdb folder, then the folder named after your computer and copy just the folder named after the date and time of the latest backup (if you look inside you will see folders named after all backed up volumes).
Time Machine uses hard links to achieve incremental backups. Let me explain. Any file on your computer has a physical location on the hard drive and a hard link which points at this location. It's as if you are only visible if your friend stands next to you and points at you and as soon as he stops pointing at you, the world cannot interact with you anymore. You are still there, physically, but as far as anyone else is concerned, you are gone. This is how files are deleted: by removing the hard link. The file is still there and until the system decides to write some other file onto that location on the hard drive special recovery software can detect those files without hard links and offer to recreate them, making the files accessible again.
A file can have more than one hard link pointing at its physical location. It looks to the system that there are multiple copies of the same file, each taking up x amount of space. But in reality there is only one physical copy on the hard drive. You can delete any of the hard links (which just look like an ordinary file) and the file remains intact, until you delete the last one.
Hark links take up virtually no space. So each time Time Machine makes a backup it simply creates a hard link to files that have not changed since the last backup. If you are backing up external drives as well and you are running Time Machine while those drive are not connected it will even create hard links to files on those drives from the last available backup.
Hopefully all this makes some sense.
In the end, there is nothing special about the way Time Machine backups are stored on disk. The Finder just sees it as separate copies of the same files, one copy for each backup. That is why, when you "command i" it take so long and you get 12.9 terabytes: it adds up every hard link (as I said the hard link itself takes up no space, but it points at a physical location and reports back the physical size of the file it points at) as a separate file.

  • 10.5.6 - spotlight wants to index the Time Machine backup

    Since I upgraded to 10.5.6, spotlight keeps trying to index the Time Machine backup. It won't let me add it to the privacy list - I get an "unknown error". Any ideas how to stop it doing that?
    It seems that while spotlight's trying to index, Time Machine won't go any further than "preparing backup".

    Spotlight does often seem to interfere with large TM backups.
    Apparently it has to do with Spotlight busily indexing things that TM has just put on the drive, but maybe hasn't completely released or finished with. Exact cause unknown.
    But it won't hurt to exclude your TM drive/partition from spotlight -- you'll find several threads in the Time Machine forum where this has helped greatly. After it's done, remove the exclusion if you want. Note that the TM disk may not get indexed until your next restart.
    Also, download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Then you'll get a bit more info on what it's doing.
    If you see a message about a "deep traversal," when nothing seems to be happening, just be patient. This means TM must examine ever file and folder on your system to figure out what needs to be backed-up, so it will be a very lengthy process.

  • Changing the base station from Air Port Express to the Time Machine

    Some years ago I bought an Air Port Express. I set it up to connect iTunes to my home stereo but it never worked very well and after a few months I gave up and put it in a draw.
    Last year I bought a Time Machine and succesfully set it up. I also established a wireless network which connects to my PC and Blackberry.
    Recently, I've been encouraged to try to set up the Air Port Express again. I had assumed that the Time Machine had been established as my base station and that I would now use the Airport Express as a wireless extender and try again to use it to connect to my home stereo.
    However, in setting it up it become clear that my Air Port Express has the status of a base station with its own wireless network (which I don't want to use).
    I can't figure out how to change the Time Machine so that IT is the base station and the Air Port Express is a secondary point connecting to wireless network created through the Time Machine.

    Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, this older "g" device is really going to drag down the performance of your Time Capsule.
    You'll need to use a WDS type configuration, which is an older "g" technology. The setup for this type of configuration is complex and difficult for most users. If you get the configuration right, there are still unfortunately going to be two big negatives with this type of setup.
    1) Since WDS is an older "g" technology, everything on your faster "n" Time Capsule will drop down to "g" level speeds. That's a huge loss.
    2) When you add the Express to the network, the bandwidth will drop by 50%
    Bottom line...you would wind up with an older "g" wireless network throughout that would be operating at one half of it's capability.
    If your budget allows, a new AirPort Express 802.11"n" would provide far better performance and would be much easier to configure for your network.

  • I'm suddenly getting the kernel panic message and constant restarts when connected to the time machine wireless network. if is switch to the BT network, all fine. no help found so far as to what's wrong or how to correct, anyone have any thoughts...

    Recently upgraded to mountain lion in order to buy the new tall tower for time machine backups. had to get technical support to help with set up as it wouldn't play ball with two computers. all working fine up until last week when the iMac started getting backup error messages. then system restarts independently when using time machine on the time machine wireless network. only stops restarting when I switch the wireless network back to he bt one, which is a pain obviously as can't back up to time machine then.  it has to be a problem with airport utility or something wireless but all says all up to date with software etc. all still works fine backing up from laptop on the wireless network, just the iMac is not happy. any help or thoughts very much appreciated.

    "what could I do *instead* of ..." rather than the one I actually asked, but seriously ...
    Shutting down might be an answer, although it would clear out my tmp directory - which I might not want to have to sort through looking for things I want to save every time I go to work, and also, now that nvram doesn't seem to work for disabling the boot chime, it can get a bit embarassing booting up in a busy meeting if I have forgotten to mute before I shut down. There are all sorts of other issues, such as editing documents, loading web pages and so on that I would have to set up again.
    Your suggestion of letting Apple know is a good one - thank you for the link.

  • I cannot see my photos in iphoto library - I tried to restore with Time Machine and that doubled the number of photos (copies) but I still cannot see the images - the events are there but no thumbnails although the number of pics per event is correct...

    Can someone help me see my pictures again in iphoto? 3 weeks ago while uploading a video from iphoto to Facebook, my events thumbnails all disappeared and were replaced by black squares - the event names and number of pics in each remain but when I click on the event, I only get squares where the pics should be - when I click those squares, I get  a square with a triangle  and an exclamation mark in middle.
    Apple had emailed me about defective disks in iMacs so I took mine to the Apple Store and they replaced my HD then reinstalled from my backup via Time Machine - I still cannot see my pics! I tried to reinstall from an earlier Time Machine date - that copied everything and now my HD has double the amount of data but I still cannot see my pictures!
    I would be thankful for any guidance on how to retrieve my pictures...

  • I have an external Time Machine drive that I want to reformat. I can't remember the password. How can I do this. Disk Utility won't let me. Thanks.

    I have an iMac that had drive problems last winter. Took the iMac to the Apple Store and they reinstalled everything and now it works again. Only thing is that my external Time Machine drive is screwed up now. Its 1.5 TB.
    I had the Time Machine drive partioned into two parts. One partion was for an emergency bootup using carbon copy cloner. That partion I can open and mounts on my desktop. The other partion was Time Machine. It once upon a time opened and mounted without a password.
    It requests a password to unlock even though I never had it password protected before the iMac drive problems. And so now it won't mount the drive.
    I can go to Disk Utilities and I can see Time Machine with both partions. The Carbon Copy partion is mounted. The Time Machine partion is not mounted. For this reason I can't select it and erase it.
    What the heck am I supposed ot do now to erase it and start over. Any help would be appreciated. I really don't want to go and buy another drive.

    You do not need a new license. The license file will be found in /Library/Preferences/ and is named, com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist. Be sure it gets transferred and you will be fine. I see no reason why the file would not be in your Time Machine backup nor any reason why it would be restored.

  • Lost In The Time Machine - Help!

    Hello,
    I sincerely apologize, in advance, if I am repeating old history here and for all the questions.
    Time Machine has got me confused… I’ve read the FAQ’s/Threads but still not sure about how to proceed. I’m a ex Microsoft Windows guy and Mac newbie. And I am completely in love with this MacBook. I’m never going back to Microsoft land.
    The Setup is - External 1TB LaCie HD with two partitions to backup a MacBook Pro and a Macbook (250 GB HD’s each).  Both MacBook’s are on home wireless network using the Airport Extreme (not Time Capsule).  
    Time Machine is optimized to do hourly backup's (which I personally think is crazy...).  The documentation I read strongly suggests not to change the backup time since the Time Machine SW is optimized to work that way.  However, there is reference to a "Time Machine Editor" software (assume third party SW?) to modify the time settings of these backups.  But, it seems the literature does not recommend using it or better yet, use it at your own risk type of thing. I don't do enough "stuff" to merit hourly backups.  I think daily would be optimum.  
    My initial thinking was, if I have to do hourly backups then it seems that the external HD would have to be directly connected to my MacBook Pro. Which means the other MacBook is not being backed up. However, that was my most likely flawed initial thinking.
    So, some questions (tried to limit it to five):
    1. I first need to do an initial full backup on both MacBook’s. So, assume I would direct connect the ext. HB to each machine to accomplish that?
    2. Then, I am assuming, the only way to properly set this up is to connect the ext. HD to the Airport Extreme? That way the hourly backups can be done for both machines over the wireless network. Personally, I would prefer to directly connect the drive to each machine, at the end of the day, and do a daily backup. But, I guess that would not be the best way to proceed and probably a bit painful to do.
    3.  The Airport Extreme has one USB port which is being using for sharing a printer. So, again I am assuming I would need a USB hub to connect the printer and the ext. HD?
    4.   If backup's have to be done hourly, how does that work when the computer is in Sleep mode? How does it work if I am working on something when it tries to backup?  For instance, I read that iPhoto needs to be closed when doing backups.  And I use iPhoto a lot. Do, I have to stop everything, every hour, for it to do its incremental hourly backup?
    5. Is the “Time Machine Editor” SW a safe way to change the time of backups?
    I really don’t get the hourly backup thing. I know these HD’s are mechanical hardware and can fail. But I’ve got to believe they are more reliable than needing to be backed-up every hour.
    I would greatly appreciate any help in getting this setup correctly. Thanks, in advance, for the help!

    Ok, so I think I'm getting it straight now but just a couple more questions to completely cement this in my head.

    c. The second MacBook, which my 87 yr. old Mom uses (LOL), is most definitely not needed to be backed up hourly. She just uses the internet (Facebook, online bridge) and iPhoto once in awhile. So, I can backup her's once a day after I am done using mine and it is shut down.
    Does, that sound like a good plan?
    Please let me know if a., b., and c. are ok to do and any comments to the other questions I had.

    Now let's see if we can help you resolve your problem.
    Where was it purchased from?
    Was it downloaded or was a disc purchased?
    What is your operating system?
    Is it version Photoshop Elements 13?
    Did you use a redemption code to get a serial number?
    Did you sign in/activate?
    Did you create an Adobe account?

  • How come that the time machine backup takes 5 days to sync 200 GB over the ethernet?

    I'm really not happy with the backup speed of the time machine. it has been 1 day and half that it is syncing and for now just 36GB are done of 210GB.
    The remaining time estimation is ridiculous around 5 more days?
    How come this is possible?? I cannot move my mac pro anywhere else it needs to be plug-in 24/7 to the Ethernet and power, of course hoping that everything goes already during these 5 days to backup.
    I've tried different things, I've check my disk for issues also for permission issues none existed.
    I've tried to restart the backup from scratch, even some times it start fast it slows down to a very low transfer rate, and now the current rate of transfer is around 1KB or lower :S
    The soul purpose of the time capsule is to do backups but at this speed rate it's useless, and from what I saw it happens to other people.
    I must have being doing something very wrong, can anyone help me or give me suggestions?

    The latest update to Lion.. 10.7.5 added slowness of TM as a new feature.. (There are no bugs just features).
    Until Apple sort out their beta testing I would recommend a different backup software. CCC, SuperDuper, Chronosync.
    The issue from reading the various posts is affecting everyone.. including people using external drives.

    I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
    You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.

    I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
    You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.  
    The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

    A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
    Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
    Machine is not backing up my files
    on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
    is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

    If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
    You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
    Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
    TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
    You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.
