The ubiquitous "MacBook/Adobe" issue

'Ello,
I just got a shiny new MacBok yesterday and, like may other people I've seen, am having problems installing anything Adobesque on it. I've tried PS Elements 2.0, Illustrator 10, and Macromedia Studio MX, all of which load fine. As soon as I click "Install ___", however, nothing happens. After 3+ hours of googling, I have sort of a vague understanding that this is a common issue and one that Apple and/or Adobe (depending on whose blog I read) are working tirelessly into the night to fix it.
My question is, since it seems that nothing can be done, what other graphics program can I use? I'm not terribly attached to PS or Illustrator, but I do need some sort of PS-ish program on my computer. Any recommendations?

Has anyone had any issues using Adobe CS or Pro Tools on the LATEST MacBook

I am about to purchase a new MacBook Pro and would like to know if there has been any issues with the latest MacBook Pro with programs such as Pro Tools, Adobe Creative Suite, or any programs that have anything to do with rendering. Please let me know what's up.

No problems with CS5, the only suggestion is that if you're going to do a lot of rendering get the i7 CPU, max out the RAM (not necessarily from Apple, OWC have very good quality and prices) and get the 7200rpm hard drive.

Unfortunately, I've found that many of the users here are PC users. While they are helpful, it's rare to get anything beyond guesses for Adobe Premiere CC performance on Macs.
I've noticed that the list of "supported" GPU's is not updated all that much by Adobe. It took a while after last year's macs were released for that list to be updated with those GPUs. But the 750M has 2GB VRAM and pretty much any GPU with 1GB of VRAM or more can take advantage of the Mercury Playback Engine on Premiere CC (http://blogs.adobe.com/premierepro/2013/06/adobe-premiere-pro-cc-and-gpu-support.html) With CS6, if your card isn't on the "list" you could add it using that hack that people talk about but you don't have to worry about that with CC as the above link explains.
While the regular 15" Macbook with the integrated graphics card is probably good enough to edit w/ Premiere CC, I don't think you'll be able to take advantage of any GPU acceleration because of the lack of a dedicated GPU with 1GB of VRAM. I am running Premiere CC on an iMac with an AMD GPU that isn't on the list, but does have 1GB of VRAM so I can take advantage of gpu accleration (however, while it's smoother than "software only", it definitely has it's REALLY annoying issues). I'm sure it'd be better with a newer NVIDIA card (from what I've read anyway) but like you, it's hard to get feedback from many people on these forums who use macs.
Hope this helps. I for one would go with the 750M. It's more $$$, but I'm guessing it'll be worth it. Just a guess though. I wish someone with that laptop (or even a 2013 iMac with similar GPU) would chime in with their thoughts.

I have Adobe X1 ver 11.0.7 installed on my iMac, when I download a .pdf and try to print it the printer preview is blank, only way is to take screen shots, is this me or an Adobe issue?

On my iMac OS-X 10.9.3 I am able to view a downloaded .pdf in my browser , if however I want to print out the .pdf via the File tab and Print in Safari, the message comes up that Adobe either does not support this format, or it s corrupted as an attachment to an email. I have tried saving it to my desktop by exporting it as a .pdf, or saving it to the desktop. In both cases when I try to open it, I get the same message.
Found that the only way I can save the data is to take a screen shot to my desktop and then I can print it out, but cripes what a pain!
Any suggestions would be welcome, is this me or an Adobe issue?

If you are printing to physical printer from Safari : Use Reader print button from Reader toolbar
If you want to save a PDF from Safari to your local : Use Reader Save button from the Reader toolbar.
PS: if you have PDF in read mode the hover the mouse at the bottom of the page and the floating Reader toolbar will appear.

Actually your suggestions are the ones that i have tried. i have seen that you have tried to help others with this issue and the only one that i could find that said they found the problem said that it was an ilife update issue and it fixed it and i have no available updates. i know it has to do with something in photo stream because it happens when i create a new library and it is loading the photos but i get the message before i reach the maximum 1000 photos. so i've tried updating, new library(first backing up photos and then deleting them from iPhoto), reinstalling OSX many times, running disc utilities. I called Apple the first day i had this issue and i was the first person to call them for support with the retina display and i actually had it escalated to a senior advisor and we thought we fixed the problem but we did not. i am pretty fluent in dealing with troubleshooting these type of issues and this is the first time i'm reaching out to the community. i figured now that the retina has been out some time now that there would be an obvious answer to this issue. thanks for the quick reply.

How do I install Adobe Shockwave Player on the new Macbook Air 2013

I have just purchased the new Macbook Air 2013 I was trying to install the Adobe Shockwave Flashplayer. Now it dowloads but the problem is that when I go try to play the game it still says I am missing a plug-in. I have been trying to switch it to open Safari using Rosetta I read that if i changed it to that it would work but the option isnt even there for my computer. Please help is it even possible to download

Any issues connecting the new MacBook to LCD projector with VGA adapter?

I do presentations on the road using my old MacBook with whatever LCD I find when I get there. I run Keynote with lots of video clips in my presentations. I carry a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter. Most often it works fine.
I was hoping to update to the new MacBook, but I'm concerned about the display issues on the discussion board.
Has anyone had any experience connecting the new MacBook using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter?

I received my MB (aluminium) 2.0 in early November, but only this week (2nd week December) have had a need to use it for a presentation via the Mini DisplayPort --> VGA adapter.
I thought I could use it just as I did my previous (white 1.83 MacBook) laptop, but this one is a bit quirkier. Plugging in the adapter cable results in a system freeze. Unplugging the cable will restore mouse control (unfreezing the computer) in most instances, but not all.
Turns out that in order to use an external VGA connection, I need to have the adapter plugged in and restart the machine. If the external display is not present from boot, then it freezes.
This is unlike my previous MacBook, in which I could plug-unplug willy-nilly. The screen would flash blue a couple of times and all would be fine, with the external extended display detected and functioning. This was one of those nice "Mac" things that my Windows-using colleagues were somewhat jealous of, as they constantly have trouble getting their laptops to recognize the LCD projector.
Sadly, it looks like I'm now living in their world...

When will Adobe issue an update to Camera Raw for CS6 and Lightroom 5 to include the Olympus E-M 5 MARK II camera, does anyone know?

What I wonder is when folks will start researching their favorite software BEFORE buying a new camera model?

We know the our software, we know the new camera will be 'ahead' of updates. its the time between that we all seem to just accept. We should not.
We can go round in circles pointing fingers as to who is to 'blame', thats not the point. The point is, no matter how far you go back, since the advent of digital this has been a problem. Posting on all web sites as far back as I remember contain "when will there be RAW support for xyz?". There are even some on this site back in 2006 asking the same question.
The interdependent link between camera makers & software vendors is not working properly. They need each other yet don't support each other. Do you think Adobe thought up DNG just as a exercise? From memory it was an attempt to standardize, with an open code, a raw format that was universal. I blame Canikon for not wholeheartedly supporting it. Then the Oly, Panny alliance come along with MFT, an ideal opportunity, but proprietary issues prevail as if they got some sort of advantage from it. They don't IMO.
Sorry for the rant, got carried away! Its just so frustrating.

Should I upgrade to the newest MacBook or keep my 2008 that has a few issues?

I have a 2008 version of the 13" MacBook Pro. It's recently been giving me issues as in slow browsing and quick battery drain. It also freezes frequently. Is it worth buying a refurbished 2012 version? Should I go with MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air? Mainly use for surfing, music and streaming.

Yes, refurbs are just like new and carry the same warranty as new. It will also have an optical drive and upgradable RAM and HD.
The Air is a bit thinner and lighter but has none of the features listed above.
I'd go for the 2012 MBP refurb.

Is there a fix for the whining MacBook issue?

So, has there been a good and final solution from Apple to the whining MacBook problem? I just received my brothers MacBook as he upgraded to the MBP. It is still under Apple Care so if there is a good solution I would like to send it in to get fixed.
I had never heard of this issue but as soon as I started using it when I got it I heard the whine and couldn't stand it. I did a little research online and most posts I've seen about it are fairly old. I did download QuietMBP which works, though it uses about 8% of the CPU capability which I'm sure drags down my battery life. It does work though, with it running the MB is quiet as my old Ibook was so at least I can happily use it. It just seems like a backwards sort of fix though.

I have the same problem and am trying to find a solution. I have an intel iMac Alum 20" 2.0ghz, 2gigs Ram, Radeon 2400XT, 250 Gig HD. The noise started after about three days of ownership. I have this for almost two weeks now. I cant find any solutions and have talked to Apple over the phone they suggested taking it to an Apple store and let them take a look at it, but I live an hour away from the nearest store, so this is a pain. But yes, the whining is annoying and loud at times. It whines for like 1-2 seconds going from a low pitch to a high pitch in those 2 seconds. It then stops and comes back maybe 20 seconds later. So thats been happening for about a weeek now.
Then all of a sudden early this morning (4AM), while the computer was in sleep mode, I was awakened by that same high pitched sound, but it wouldnt stop, I had to get up and turn the computer off. I would definatley love to get some answers and have this fixed. I've read many posts now with people having similar experiences.
So now this ShhMBP thingy, I wonder if this will work with an iMac. Just want this fixed. Thanks

Try uninstalling using http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html then reinstall.

Fixing the macbook heat issue

Hi,
There is a fairly simple solution, to at least reduce the risk of damaging your macbook by letting it run at high temps. I bought my 2.0GHz macbook over the weekend, it was idling around 70 - 75 C. Thats a little high in my book.
I put the macbook on the vantec lap2cool laptop cooler that I have for my AMD64 HP laptop. Within about 30 minutes of running, the macbook was running between 42 C (idle) and 60 C (being taxed). Now the vantec is pretty cool, but its a little bulky for the little macbook.
I picked up a targus cooler for about $24 at the local walmart, its keeping it idle around 48 C, and under normal conditions (text mate, iTunes, Firefox, Thunderbird) its running around 54 C. The targus cooler is pretty quiet, slim, but a little cheap. They sell some high-powered solutions on newegg.com with better CFM and higher RPMs.
Now I'm sure a lot of typical mac users are going to have a fit about using a laptop cooler that makes the macbook a little bulker, but its way better than the damage your going to do to the macbook by running it hot on a daily basis!!

Intel processors (at least recent ones) are well known for having heat related issues. AMD processors offer better price/performance with reduced energy consumption and output. My HP zv5000z which is AMD64 based, has two large fans on the base, and kicks off a fair amount of heat exhaust. That however is heat thats NOT in my system. If I use it for games, then I'd be crazy not to have it hooked up to the Vantec Lap2Cool.
Apple in my opinion are taking a bit of a gamble. They've had to trade-off heat issues, performance with keeping the system quiet. To me, kicking the fans in on the macbook is a last ditch attempt to keep the system from keeling over, hence the loud noise (high RPM fans). What Apple is likely gambling over is that most users will run the machines in a "cool place" and the average user won't tax the system. Your business, designer, etc types aren't going to be playing games on it. They are gambling that the system will hold up to the level of heat abuse until the warranty runs out, or you purchase AppleCare. Either way, I assume they don't lose money.
In terms of melting, I seriously doubt you'll see physical melting of the system. What you are more likely to see is heat related damage to electric components (either the processors themselves) or surrounding components, resulting in system failure (or odd issues like display problems, random crashes etc). Lets just say its in the best interest of the health of your system to keep it cool.
The fact that Apple has corrected this on the MacBook Pros with firmware / hardware changes, would suggest there is some teething issues with the move over to Intel, and perhaps a shift in the type of customers buying the macbook.
With the market being so competitive, do you really think Apple is going to say -- "Hey these Macbooks look nice, but they overheat, you need to get Apple Care because they'll fail sooner than expected, and you should buy a laptop cooler to extend the life of the product". This adds what $300.00 to the price of the laptop, thats already slightly higher than lightweight options from vendors such as Dell, HP etc. When you go to the Apple Store and the person working there insists that you should buy Apple Care because the system is going to fail sooner rather than later, that tells you something right there.
Now if a laptop cooler keeps the system running between 43 C and 60 C instead of 60 C and 90 C, then aside from your own comfort with the thing on your lap, keeping the system cool is a good idea. Unless you like to return things to the Apple store?

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and the GPU is causing issues with Yosemite. There are a number of issues I have run across:
If I have four tabs open on Safari then I start to get a flickering on the screen from the GPU refreshing
When I leave the computer alone for more than 20 mins the screen saver should start -- what happens is that the screen goes to black. When I move the cursor I do not get the login screen. I have to reboot
FireFox Web browser will not run
I get issues with the computer running very slowly
I have already turned off the transparency option in settings. Any ideas??

Do you have more than one OS on the Mac?
You may want to look at something like http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/. This has a Free Trial window, but it is a commercial application. If there are any heat/sensor issues, this may help.
A SMC Reset or PRAM/NVRAM reset may also help.
