The update "Java for OS X 2013-005" can't be installed

This only partially downloaded (99%) and will not finish updating due to the error:
"The file "JavaForOSX.pkg" couldn't be found on the server "swcdn.apple.com"."
How do I fix this?
Today Java did an automatic update and yet this error persists in my Software Update.
Please help!
Thanks.

  • HT1222 The update "Java for OS X 2012-006" can't be installed

Hello - When updating software I get the following message:  The update "Java for OS X 2012-006" can't be installed.  You don't have permission.  I am using the admin user on this computer.  Any ideas?  I have problems in the past and had to clear cache - could this have caused some permission issues?
    Thank you!

  • Possible Java for OS X 2013-005 malware on my MBP?

Hello all, so I was looking for some android file transfer software for my MBP (running maverick OS) the other day and I got a pop up asking me to install java. One of the apps had said it was cloud based, so i figured the java went with it. It prompted me to install Java for OS X 2013-005. I did so.
Afterwards I had heard that Java is not good to have on macs due to vulnerabilities. So i looked into uninstalling it.
I found a way using terminal with sudo rm -fr /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin and also a way where I search for JavaAppletPlugin.plugin and delete that.
I tried to do both and did not find java....this worried me. I also saw that the latest version of Java is Java for OS X 2014....So I was wondering why it asked me to install an older version....
Did I somehow install malware on my mac? And if so, how do I check and get rid of it?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
    [Process completed]
The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • HT1222 Weird security update Java for OS X 2013-003

Why is the security update Java for OS X 2013-003 causing my 15" rMBP to start displaying a flashing window asking me if I want to allow the application "java" to accept incoming network connections?
    OS X 10.8.3

It appears that these errors are arising because:
Oracle Java has been installed on your system,
there is some add-on code that is running, and that is using Oracle Java components,
the add-on code is attempting to initiate network connections,
and the Oracle Java connections are failing.
Basically, there is Oracle Java code running here somewhere — code which is not part of OS X, as OS X 10.7 and later do not include Oracle Java by default — and this (unknown) code is using Oracle Java and the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), and the code is encountering some new "defensive' measures.  Or is encountering an Oracle Java bug, which would be an Oracle issue with their Oracle Java product.
Y'all have to figure out what code is running here (and that is dependent on Oracle Java and the JVM), and if the code is expected and necessary here, to then work with the vendor to resolve the behavior here and/or upgrade to the provider's current version of the software.
Based on the DDService64d reference, there appears to be Drobo software here, and some Drobo software apparently requires Java and the JVM.  Here is some information from Drobo.  (There's a recommendation there to disable Gatekeeper, and — while that likely does resolve the issues referenced — I'd prefer to avoid disabling Gatekeeper in general.)
Again, figure out what's installed and using Java here.  Remove it, upgrade it, or check with the vendor.
Oracle Java does have a recent history of various serious security issues, and it's common practice to disable the Oracle Java web-start plug-in, or to entirely avoid installing Oracle Java on OS X on 10.7 and later.  If you're not using and don't need Oracle Java, then don't install it.   If you've previously installed Oracle Java and don't need it (as is the case on OS X 10.7 and later), reportedly Oracle has a tool which can remove Oracle Java.
note: Oracle Java is completely different from JavaScript.

Hello. After this update(Java for OS X 2013-003) stop working Ps3 media server. How to fix it?

I fix it. I restored the contents of /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines with the contents found in my latest TimeMachine backup from before the update, PMS works like  again. Something in the latest Java update does break the PS3 mediaserver.

  • Java for OS X 2013-005 Update Damaged 10.8.5

This specific update wrecked a lot of fundamental functionality on my Mac Mini with OS X 10.8.5 volume. I have use the repair partition to reinstall 10.8.5 with NO improvement of the problem. The volume has been repaired by both Disk Utility and DiskWarrior with NO improvement of the problem. The Finder prefs have been removed with NO improvement of the problem. Sleepimage and swapfiles have been removed with NO improvement of the problem. Zapping the PRAM made no improvement in the problem.
    Here are some symptoms:
    - Finder can't boot any application.
    - No Dock.
    - No desktop picture, just gray.
    - No virtual desktop spaces.
    - No Mac anything in the Menu Bar. No system preference functions in the Menu Bar. Only separate applications show up in the Menu Bar.
If I log into my account and hold down the Shift key to stop login items from loading, I get just the cursor and the gray background. I get nothing else. The Finder doesn't even boot.
ALL of the above was caused only by the Java update. I had restarted this volume just after installing the Java update. There have been no other problems before the update. The system had already been repaired before the update. I cannot find any other factors involved.
I'll be attempting other tricks to see what can repair the damage, such as trying to get at the account's cache files and dumping them. For the moment, it's important to document that this damage can be the result of the update.
If folks would like to suggest further repair tricks to try, please be certain you have read through what I have already attempted in order to avoid redundancy. Thanks.

Thanks for a good idea macjack! It didn't solve the problem, but I gave you credit for helping, like you need more points! You're a great asset around here.
Your suggestion got me thinking about going after something deeper in the System folder and root Library folder. The problem wasn't any of the account's Login Items. I had already checked that out by using 'Safe Mode' for just the account. Using 'Safe Mode' for the root account, however, was another matter! THAT proved to solve the problem! IOW: When I booted the root account into 'Safe Mode', (via holding the Shift key during boot) the problem was gone.
Therefore, I got to work removing various bits and pieces in the root account and rebooting. Eventually I dug out whatever has been causing the problem and am now fine!
Narrowing down the source of the problem is going to take some time as I have to gradually add back what I removed until the problem arises again. I don't want to go through the gory details as I test. But I will, for the moment, state that none of the System/Library/Extensions foreign KEXT files was to blame. They contributed nothing to the problem. What I have pulled at this point includes all of the following that are not Apple's own:
    - All PreferencePanes (in /Library and ~/Library just to make sure)
    - All Startup Items (in /Library)
    - All LaunchDaemons (in /Library)
    - All LaunchAgents (in /Library and ~/Library just to make sure)
    - All Fonts (in /Library and ~/Library)
    - All QuickTime components (in /Library/QuickTime)
Something among the above, foreign and not Apple's, caused the problem. It's going to be interesting to work through them all and discover what. I am going to guess that whatever it is has something to do with Java and the changes made by this Java update. But we'll see.
For now, I have other work to perform. But I should have the antagonist identified this evening and will post the results here.

  • HT202822 I need Java for OS X 2013-005 - where do I get it?

A key website for me has updated its Java requirements as of today. For some reason Java is not in evidence on my iMac, although it seemed to be doing its job until today. The catch is that I'm on Snow Leopard, which I realize Apple no longer supports. I'd still like to try installing the final Java Snow Leopard update (I know, it's a long shot) but it's not available through Software Update and I can't find it on the Apple site.
Suggestions welcome — but preferably not a lecture that I should be on Yosemite.

Yes, you're likely correct. The version of Java for Snow Leopard is too old to function correctly with that site.
When you have Yosemite installed, pick up Java 8 from Oracle (Apple stopped altering Oracle's Java to work with OS X after version 6). The latest version, unbelievably, installs adware if you aren't paying attention. Or at least it did. I downloaded it again just now, and the adware option is gone. I don't know if that means it now installs the adware without giving you a check box (as it did before) to opt out, or if Oracle was deluged with angry emails and phone calls asking just what in the he** they thought they were doing.
