The verdict on the new MBP

OK, so let's hear it. What's the verdict on the new MBP from those who have it? Thumbs up or thumbs down? Some here have highlighted some issues - speed, display, heat, etc. But maybe we are only hearing from the discontented. I am contemplating buying one and would love to hear the verdict from those who have been pounding on it for a week or two. Thumbs up or down? Should I get one or no?
Thx

I had the previous version (2.33, 2GB, 120Gb HD) and I prefer it to the new 2.4 model. I sold my 2.33 as I got it all scratched up 4 days after I bought it. Sold it for $1900 and bought the new one under the student discount w/free ipod to minimize my loss (selling Ipod)
Anyway, wish I would of kept the old 2.33 as the display was brighter, sharper, and 100% even in brightness. The new 2.4 has a yellow tinge on the bottom of the display, is "softer" and the colors seem less vibrant.
Also, it seems a little SLOWER opening apps than my 2.33 did. Battery life on my 2.33 averaged 4 hours. The new 2.4 averages 3:45-4 hours. No improvement.
Video encoding speed is oh so slightly faster with the 2.4, but not really noticable. My 2.33 was 100% perfect. Perfect display, super fast performance, and even ran cool (2.4 does as well)
I guess if the display on the new 2.4 were better I would be thrilled, but its not. Also seems to have a problem with the finder as downloaded icons disappear.
Very odd.
Anyway, I may exchange this one and try to get a display without the yellow tinge, or I may just keep this for a year or so and upgrade later.
Overall, its a killer notebook, but at $2700 (after tax) a bit steep to have imperfections (like a bad display)
If I could do it all over again, I would of kept the scratched up 2.33. Oh well.

  • Intriguing about the battery in my new MBP

    Hi everyone
I got two days ago my first mac wich is a macbook pro 13" from 2010. I've red all there is to read about the use of the battery on the Internet and on the Apple website and so far I have only done complete charges with it. (I wait until the battery is to 0% and then i plug it until the battery is at 100%).
I can use my macbook for about 6 hours without using wifi (ethernet, plus some videos watching).
I have downloaded the widget istat nano to see how is my battery and apparently with 6 cyles, I have a battery health of 100% and 5802m).
First of all I wanted to know if the numbers are ok ?
Finally I wanted to know if I use the battery correctly so far ? Should I let it plug longer ? Some people are also saying that it is not good to let the battery fall under 5% before plugging it. Is it true ?
Here we go, thanks for all your answers and sorry if some questions are dumb, I just want to keep my mac as long as I can and not bother Apple directly with my questions if they are stupid.
    Thanks

Eh, batteries are fickle things, gooey chemistry and all that. Factors include time since the battery, not the battery pack was manufactured, temperature, temperature variance the battery's been exposed to and any thermal shock, drain amount and cycles, quality and purity of chemical batches used in manufacture, and for all I know phase-of-the-moon! IMHO the only thing more "voodoo science" in electronics than batteries is antenna design!
But you're right I seem to have lucked out on the battery in my new MBP 17", the one that came with my late-2008 Unibody MB lost 5% of it's health in the first few days of use and then got on the expected decline thereafter. Expectation and usually specification is 70-80% of capacity after 3 years. The annoying thing with Lithium batteries is that the clock starts ticking on their capacity as soon as they roll off the production line, no matter if they get used or not! Tip: Make sure any replacement Lithium battery you get is "fresh" and definitely not used (I'm looking at you eBay!)

  • New MBP,..Should I install Bootcamp first,..then Parallels to the Bootcamp partition?, New MBP,..Should I install Bootcamp first,..then Parallels to the Bootcamp partition?

What is the install process for Bootcamp/Parallels?
I have a new MBP being delivered today and need to install Windows for one program. What is the process to install a VM?
I heard that I should install Bootcamp first, then install Parallels to the Bootcamp partition. Any advice? Thx.

I guess I shold explain more about what I am doing.
I will be running a CRM program (Windows Based), and a Order Entrry program (Windows Based) (Memory Hog) all the time. Along with this, I will have Lotus Notes for Mac and Mac Mail open all the time.
Is there any harm, comcern, issues, hesitation,....to using Bootcamp to Parallels/Windows?
I just want to get this configuration correct the first time.
    Also,...Am I able to drag files between Mac/PC ???

  • What is the verdict for the Blacberry iBooster

    Hi all,
I have been reading about a cell phone booster for balckberry curve , can somebody tell me how effective it is? i am a road warrior and go in and out of bad signal all the time, i want something that will amplify my cell phone signal and higher bandwidth for data connectivity. Every product out their seems to have a mixed reaction..

I read Cnet's review and a review from everythingicafe.com. I think it's worth giving a try. I heard that it really does what it's supposed to do - increase your signal inside your car especially when you pass through 'dead spots'. From all of the reviews that I've read, there's only one pertinent negative thing about iBooster - when turned into speakerphone it gets muffled and sometimes the person from the other line won't be able to hear the caller clearly. But I think that it's not a big of a deal since it can do what I need it to do - avoid dropped calls when I'm on the road! Anyway, I am thinking of pre-ordering one. Will let you know about it!

  • New MBP on the way, can I swap in a Macbook 320G drive?

I've finally made the move to upgrade my old white MB to a MBP (15"). About 4 months ago I upgraded the drive in the MB to a 320G Western Digital. All my software is up to date on that box. Is there any reason I can't swap out the drive in my new MBP for this one and be fine?
    Thanks

Yup. Same issue, except with a 15" Unibody MBP HD to a 17" Unibody MBP... I'd upgraded to a WD Scorpio Black 320 GB 7200 RPM drive on the non-CTO 15 MBP, just having gotten all the settings perfect in CS3 and CS4, yada yada... the Apple Tech I spoke with about the exact same question responded: "A cloned volume or hard drive swap from the 15 inch MacBook Pro will be slower on the 17 than using MA... definitely use Migration Assistant. No question."
So, I did, despite a few Permissions issues... went from the nice 'n speedy 2.53 GHz, 6 GB RAM 15.4" Unibody MBP (I own 2 2.53 GHz 15s and now 2 2.93 GHz 17s also, one gloss and one matte, all 4 for my consulting biz), the non-clone, just simple Migration Assistant enabled transfer resulted in a nice productivity and speed boost with the first (glossy) 17" MBP, the 2.93 GHz uptick and 8 vs. 6 GB of RAM helped speed things up past the 15" more than the numbers might suggest, especially in p-shop, Aperture, FCP, Shake, and Nikon NX2...I'd stick with the long way home on this procedure, but I'm with ya on all the reasons to go with a CCC/Super Duper HD clone or simple transplant! :^/

  • Logic 7.2 and the new MBP or Dual/Quad MacPros

    Hello,
I'm at a cross roads at the moment and I'm just wondering if you guys would be able to help me out?
My G5 is kinda noisey, hot, annoyingly overloaded (especially with NI Massive..lol) and its time for a change. I'm toying with the idea of a new MBP or if/when Apple announce new MacPro's next week a MacPro/2.66.
I'm just after some opinions on Logic and MBP's, if its a stable and useable platform to work on? I like the look of the new 2.4ghz MBP's and the possibility of integrating Ableton Live with my DJ setups. But Logic is my "wow" (no offence) and I'm undecided if moving from the G5 1.8DP to the MBP would be a big improvement. I imagine the laptop would be a lot more quieter than the MacPro.
I was thinking of going for the 2.4 15" with the faster 7200.2 HD (i dont mind the 4-6 week wait) and buying a Motu Ultralite and a firewire caddy/hd for a 320gb Seagate.
Then with the MacPro, its going to be really more powerful but then there's no portability.
    Hope you guys can help,
    Cheers.

  • Can't get iCloud to work properly from new MBP.

I recently bought a new MBP and gave my old one to my wife. I deleted the calendar and contact info from my old MBP since she didn't need it. Only I didn't realize that it would also delete all the information from my new MBP that I had initialized from a Time Machine back-up.
But now, I can't get thinks back to normal. I had recently upgraded my old MBP to Mavericks, so I posted my questions there on the assumption that the problem was with Mavericks. I now think the problem is with iCloud, so I'm posting here as well.
Here's my tale of woe ...
First, I tried restoring my back-ups, but the restored info would literally disappear with 2-3 seconds of being reloaded. I sat there and watched my contacts appear, then disappear. Three times. The Mavericks folks made some suggestions about deleting files from the Application Support Folder. No help. Same results. Watched my contacts load and then disappear 3 more times.
So I decided to start more-or-less from scratch. I deleted my iCloud account from both my MBP and my iPad. I then reloaded my calendar and my contacts from the back-ups on my MBP. Everything fine so far. All calendar items are there. All contacts are there.
I re-added the iCloud account on my MBP. Still okay. Contacts and calendar info still there. However, System Preferences would not allow me to check the box next to "calendar." It said "setting up" then stopped and unchecked the Calendar box. I am also unable to enable the iCloud account within Calendar preferences.
I re-added my account on my iPad. No calendar info, but that didn't surprise me because the calendar wouldn't connect from my Mac.
But the Contacts on the iPad included ONLY those contacts that I had added from the previous recipients window after my last back-up. None of the contacts that had come from my previous back-up were there even though they were on my MBP. So I tried unchecking the box in System Preferences. All of my contacts disappeared from my MBP. None disappeared from my iPad.
So at this point, my iPad becomes a games machine. I can't get my contacts to it. I can't my calendar to it. Email is no good without my contacts.

The iCloud Calendar  and Time Machine don't play nice together. If you accidentally delete your calendars,  they are deleted on iCloud: you restore the cached versions from TM, and iCloud promptly brings them up to date by deleting them again.
However it is possible to restore from Time Machine (or another backup system if it's included your calendars) by following the following steps:
Turn off your internet connection. Make sure that it really is completely off.
Restore from Time Machine or your backup. This should restore your calendars to list under your iCloud username.
Now carry out this process with each calendar:
Select a calendar listed under your iCloud login name.
From the File menu choose Export...>Export. An .ics file will be saved at your designated destination.
Create a new calendar with the same name as the one you've just exported from, choosing 'On My Mac'.
From the File menu choose Import... Select the .ics file and choose to import it into the calendar you just created (make sure you don't import it into the iCloud version).
Now your calendars are listed under 'On My Mac' as well as under your iCloud login name.
Reconnect to the internet. Your iCloud calendars will disappear as before. Now carry out the following process with each of the 'On My Mac' calendars:
Select your 'On My Mac' calendar. From the File menu choose 'Export...' then 'Export...'; from the sub-menu. This will create an .ics file at the location chosen in the Export dialog.
From the File menu choose 'New Calendar' then your iCloud login name in the sub menu.
A new calendar called 'Untitled' will appear in your sidebar under your iCloud login name. Change its name to that of the calendar you exported.
From the File menu choose 'Import...' then 'Import...' from the sub-menu. A navigation pane will open: navigate to and choose your exported .ics file.
iCal will ask you where to import this to. Click the drop-down menu and select the iCloud version of your calendar (make sure not to choose the 'On My Mac' version). Import.
Your calendar contents will appear in the iCloud version of the calendar but this may take some time. You need to leave iCal running until the rotating icon at the top of the sidebar disappears.
You can now delete the 'On My Mac' version of the calendar (control-click it in the sidebar list and choose 'Delete').
You should back up your calendars periodically by exporting the .ics files as in step 1 above and keeping them safely.

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro, I am trying to run MW3 but it will not work without crashing a few minuets into the game. The general specs on my computer are a dual processor 2.53 ghz. 4 gb ram and a NVIDIA geforce 9400 (9600 is the alternate card).
    Things to note:
I have been unable to update firmware on this computer for about a year now. Im not sure why.
I am running a bootleg copy of Windows XP on this computer, I would not like to spend $149 to get Windows 7 if possible.
any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Why don't you take your 'old' MBP into your local Apple Store and have them check out everything that's wrong with it - and I mean everything? Then, when you get an estimate about how much it would cost to get the machine completely repaired, ask about the Apple flat-rate repair pricing?
It's worth a shot - and with what you may save, you can put in the bank for a new MBP.

  • New MBP-closed lid?

I've closed the lid on my new MBP and when I open it up I don't have to login. On my work MBP I have to login. I am wanting the same set up on this new pro. What am I missing in the set up?
    TIA,
    Ginger

In System Preferences/Accounts, at the bottom left side of the window is an icon of a house and it says Login Options next to the icon. Click on it and on the right hand panel at the top of the window will be a pop-up selection for "Automatic login". Set that to "Off". Click on it and the panel on the right will have a radio button selection for "Display login window as:" and select "List of users" or "Name and password" as you like.

  • Buying a new MBP - hard drive repacement questions...

Does replacing the HD in a new MBP void the warranty? I've searched the forums but it seems there's no firm answer. Basically if I buy a new 13" I want to upgrade the HD (I Think) to the 500GB 7200 Drive (probably Seagate momentus), but I'm concerned about heat and noise issues. is there a huge performance boost between the offered 500 GB 5400 Drive? I am planing on buying the $1400 version so I get the 4GB RAM and the faster processor to start with. Is that worth the price? What about battery life - I'm concerned now that it's not replaceable that a 7200 drive would waste that battery too quickly.

Go with 500 GB, the Seagate is fine. The 7200 rpm vs. 5400 rpm will give a modest performance boost, and there is really minimal additional heat, noise and power consumption with a faster spinning drive (it might mean 10 minutes shorter run time of the 5-7 hours from a full battery charge).
Be sure to order the drive without the G-force protection. The MBP has it's own internal accelerometer, and the two may conflict, so get the drive that lacks that feature.
Instructions for DIY HDD swap are on p. 37 of the manual:

  • Keyboard and Trackpad Aren't Recognized in new MBP

I purchased a brand new MBP 15" 2.4 GHZ 2 GB RAM yesterday. I charged it and then turned it on. The computer does not recognize the trackpad or the keyboard. I've also looked at any patches/updates that are on the Apple support site, but when I went to install the only two that seemed relevant (12/07 & 2/08), the MBP message came up that I don't need these updates. I've also re-installed the factory settings and original software and tried to install patches again. Since the store is closed today for Easter Sunday, I thought I would see if there was a recommended fix from the group. Otherwise, as Graham thoughtfully suggested, I will take the machine back to the store tomorrow.
Apologies for not posting this question as a new thread earlier, I am new to this. Thank you Graham for the advice.

I brought the MBP back to the Apple store this morning. Within 20 minutes, I had a new one. They said it was most likely a hardware issue with the wiring. I'm happily typing this on the keyboard of my new MBP. Thank you to those that gave insightful advice over the weekend.

  • Well I've already screwed things up on my new MBP

Might be the first of many questions. I have a brand new MBP running 10.6.6 and an old MBP running 10.5.8. I ran the Migration Assistant today. Obviously I haven't a clue what I am doing. (Should leave things like this to experts.) I had some success and I had some failures. So failure # 1 is my Address Book. How the heck do I get my contacts from the old machine over to the new machine? I've tried moving from the entire "address book folder" from old home folder/library/application support to the same place on new MBP. Also moved old Address Book Preferences to new computer; I feel like I followed all of the directions I read -- but I've mucked something up. Now address book on new computer looks to have 20 MB in it -- but when I open it -- no contacts seen. And in target mode, I cannot open the old address book with new MBP. I get a message that says: "You cant use this version of the Address Book with this version of Mac OS X. You have Address Book 4.1.2." I screwed something up but no idea what -- and not sure how to fix it. Should I have trashed new MBP Address Book files BEFORE i started trying to move things? Any ideas on how to remedy my self-inflicted woes? Thanks. I betcha I'm going to have the exact same questions about iCal too. At least my iTunes all moved properly.

Your best bet is to start over.
Erase the new Mac's internal HD, reinstall OSX from the disc that came with it, then use +Setup Assistant+ when it starts up again. That will transfer everything from your old Mac, and set it up exactly the same (unless you choose to omit things).
See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum). Start with the green box there.
(And, just for future reference, paragraphs are your friend -- they make things much more readable)

  • MBP C2D 3.06 vs new MBP i7

Greetings, I'm interested in hearing of any comparisons between the '09 MBP with the 3.06 processor and the new MBP i7. I have the former with the 7200 rpm hard drive and 4gb of ram. I'm pretty happy with my laptop, but always have the bug for more speed etc. I do light video editing with FCE, but I'm doing a lot more photography work in Aperture with Nik Software plugins. Would the i7 do much for me? Or, might I be better off adding 4gb of ram bringing mine to 8gb? Thoughts and opinions please... Thanks.

...so summing up then (after following the benchmark link), the i7 and i5 new MBP processors both show significant realworld speed improvements, but if all you are after is speed you will get almost double the speed with an iMac using an i7 processor than you will with a MacBook Pro! (Did I read that right?)
    thanks

  • New MBP for gaming. Thoughts.

    I need advice
So after i spent half of the morning moaning how new mbp 15 is either expensive with decent GPU or not so expensive but still expensive with awful GPU and how it wont let me play Metro 2033 and other modern games i suddenly realized that...
... there is no Metro 2033 and there are no other modern games on mac as well pretty much. And since ported games are unstable and installing windows is not an option for me. It hit me: i should probably just use my old mac for work (it handles photoshop just fine) and buy another gaming laptop for $1000-$1500 (note: new macbooks are starting at $2500 in my country for 15 inches).
Having 2 laptops seems like a better and cheaper idea then buying new $2200 ($3000 in here) and putting windows on it. I will only need to buy one extra $1200-$1500 gaming notebook which will also be faster then new mbp with something like GTX485m.
Are you fellow gamers enjoying dual-booting or you left mac for good already? I wasnt so concerned till now since i only played Wow and SCII, but i feel like i want to experience other games. What do i do, heh.

Macs are poor game machines.  If that is a high priority of yours, you will be much better served with a PC.
    Ciao.
