The volume for "IMG_2333.JPG" cannot be found.
I imported a lot of photos from different CDs (all from different digital cameras) into iPhoto 09. When I try to place them into the softcover book template, I get recurring error messages that say 'The volume for “IMG_2333.JPG” (or whatever the image is called) cannot be found. Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and wait for it to appear on the desktop, then try again.' is there a solution rather than constantly reinserting the CDs?

That's the problem. When it is UN-checked, the iPhoto simply stores the location where the photo came from and accesses it from there. In your specific case, it wants to access them directly off the CDs.
Delete them from your library, turn that check box ON, then reimport those CDs to your library.

I'm a bit of a novice with macs but a new problem has occurred while importing photos from my Nikon D70s to iphoto. With the majority of images, it comes up with the caution "The volume for DSC_0001.jpg cannot be found" or whichever DSC image. If I press 'cancel' it imports the photo and I can view and edit it. If I press 'OK' or 'find photo' nothing useful seems to happen.
I have tried updating iphoto but I again get an alert saying "An eligible iPhoto application was not found in the location /Applications."
Any help with both these problems would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.This sometimes occurs if you’re importing a file into iPhoto and there’s already a file there with the same name. Digital cameras can produce many, many files with the same name over their lifetime, so it’s not uncommon to have several files called IMG_00543.JPG, for instance. Now you want to import one also called this.
What happens is that iPhoto compares the two files to check for duplicates. However, if iPhoto cannot find the file already in the database for comparison, then you get this message. It suggests that your database is damaged because iPhoto has lost track of this (or these) similarly named files.
A simple test is to rename the file you are importing - just add a character - IMG_00543a.JPG for instance. If this then imports with no issue then you might consider rebuilding your library:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. -
Error message "The Volume for "IMG_5727.JPG Cannot be found.

I have been recieving the error:
"The Volume for "IMG_5727.JPG Cannot be found.
Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and
wait for it to appear on the desktop, then try again."
It has been happening for months but I am editing/moving
wedding pictures(900 plus) right now and it is impossible to work around this. They are new images that were just down loaded from the card reader.
I can see the pictures right in the library

Depending on what you mean by that, it could be creating the problem you're having.
Are you physically "moving" your pictures within the finder, or do you just mean dragging and dropping within iPhoto?
Usually, the way iPhoto works is you upload them into iPhoto from a card or some sort of volume.
A new file is created in the iPhoto library.
That file never leaves the library as it is now the actual link to iPhoto.
However, if you physically move that file from the library, you will break the link and have lots of problems.
You can't move files from the iPhoto library.
However, if you're not physically moving photos from the library (manually, via the finder), and if you are uploading into iPhoto, and iPhoto shows you a thumbnail and when you click on it, it gives you that message, then there might be something wrong with the volume iPhoto thinks it's uploading pictures to from your card/source volume.
I would reestablish a new volume to save to and see if it's still having the same problems. Make sure you backup the original library though. -
iPhoto frustrating error..The volume for "Df23.JPG" cannot be found. It prompts for all photos with this issue rather than offering an option to ignore. I can find the images in spotlight but not in Find Photo. Does anyone have a solution?
Unless you have the source files that were on the TC or Windows machine you will have to start over with a new library as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2. Open the library package like this.

3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4. Drag the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects. Your original library will remain intact for further attempts at fixes is so desired.

Error Message::: The volume for "CIMG0010.JPG" cannot be found.
When I import to iphoto, I get this message:
The volume for “CIMG0010.JPG” cannot be found.
Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and wait for it to appear on the desktop, then try again.
I have to press Cancel each time to resume importing.
Anyone have same problem?

Ms. MiniMacI too had this problem but found a very simple solution*. No rebuild needed.
For anyone else who runs into this problem here is what happened to me, and what I did about it (for reference):
I checked to make sure all software was updated, I tried different memory cards, I tried reformatting cards and used a card reader and tried straight from my camera (Canon 40D). I was downloading over 250 photos and after sitting there hitting 'Cancel' on each photo TWICE my photos finally loaded... or so I thought. When I went to open them, only the thumbnails were there! Argh!
Thankfully I didn't delete the memory card, and this time I tried downloading to a new folder on the Desktop and then importing to iPhoto. I got the same error. I tried locating each photo with the 'Find Photo' button and this opened the correct folder and after I scrolled down it had even highlighted the correct file. Unfortunately this did not work.
I tried a photo at the beginning, middle and end of the shoot to see if the memory card was somehow corrupt. Same problem with each. Eventually I did load my photos but again, only after I hit cancel for each one of the 250 photos. Interesting that after I hit 'cancel' it would download the photo.
The 'duplicate image' window came up for the 3 images I had randomly selected earlier, so I didn't think it could have been a naming problem. After all, I have been using the same camera for a while with sequential numbering enabled.
After reading Terence's reply (thank you) I was even more flustered that I would have to rebuild a database that I thought I was careful creating and backing up. Backing up... That was it!
I have over 40 gigs of photos on a USB drive from before I owned my Mac. I choose to use iPhoto to catalog the files but did not want to load them all on to my laptop and clog up useful memory.
It occurred to me that as Terence had suggested iPhoto may be trying to double check the new images against old ones, but the old ones can't be found. Even though the files were on completely different drives.
After simply plugging in my USB drive the photos downloaded to my MacBook immediately. Just to be clear, the photos were not using the same names as old ones nor were they being written to the USB drive; but iPhoto needed to have that USB drive plugged in to download photos to the laptop hard drive.
This is an easy fix, and avoids database rebuilding, but I am worried about when I go traveling etc. and need to download photos without my USB drive handy... -

Hi Community,
I have a number of photos in my library that appear in the photos and events, but if I try to edit it, copy it, move it, or link my other desktop to my laptop iphoto where these photos live, I get a message that says the volume cannot be found.
Then if I click edit, I get another message that reads
Image Cannot be Edited
The original is offline.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
I no longer have the original files to re import.

LeeYou get that message when the library is a "referenced" library and the source file is not where it was when it was originally imported into the library. Check the iPhoto Advanced preference pane to see if you're running a managed or referenced library.
What version of iPhoto and system are you running?

This first started when I hooked up my card reader to my mac. I'd get the above image when I tried to import files off of it. My options are"
- Cancel - Find Photo… - OK -
OK = Nothing. It flashes and stays.
Find Photo = Navigating to the image, (all the others are grayed out except the one it says it can't find)
Cancel = This actually loads the image, but then the next image has the same issue. Forcing a quit seems to be the only way out.

I don't know where they have gone, or where to search, other than Finder, which does not list them. They are not that important to me but Ido not know which photos the warnings are about, if I did I could go into the event and delete them.
This happens
1. when you run a Referenced Library - where the files are not copied to the iPhoto Library on import - that means you chose to do the File Management.
2. The files are stoed on another disk (or volume)
3. iPhoto can't find that disk (or volume)
So, the solution is to plug in the disk so that iPhoto can access it.
If you don't have the disk, or the photos concerned, then you have a corrupted Library.
How to proceed from there depends on the actual version of iPhoto you use.
BTW you do know exactly what photos are missing - the message tells you. But I think you'll find that iPhoto needs the file in order to delete it.

do you have a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or a referenced library (you have choosen to uncheck that option and manage tthe original photos yourself - strongly not recommended)

this is driving me nuts..I don't know how to get it off...I can't use iphoto and I have to do a forced quit of the whole computer just to get it off the scrren. I don't even know what it means.
It means that when you imported this photo you didn't allow iPhoto to copy the image to its Library, but chose to store it somewhere else. Now iPhoto is looking for it. Where is the disk you chose to store it on?

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management. -

this keeps showing up on my Iphoto when I try to look at pictures and now it won't go away!! Help!!

I copied some photos off a friend's memory stick directly into one of my iphoto folders.
Now when i try to move or change the photos, the I get this message (in the topic).
When i oped the thumbnail, i can see the enlarged photo, but after 3 seconds or so I again get the message and the photo disapears to the large black and white exclamation mark !.

The "!" indicates that iPhoto has lost the connection between the thumbnail and the full resolution photo - what you are seeing is a low resolution copy of the imported photo - not the photo

Ver.9.5 The volume for file name cannot be found

My work Mac Book pro was recently upgraded to Mavericks from 10.6.8, with iPhoto 11 (ver. 9.5) also an included upgrade. One album of photos is no longer accesible - clicking on each thumbnail provokes the following window "The volume for <file name> cannot be found. The "Try again" option doesn't work, and the alternative, which is to use the finder to locate the file is useless, as the files are buried in a library spare bundle. When I copy the file name, and search on the volume with the library via finder, it pulls up tiny thumbnail size files.
I have a primary iphoto library on a dedicated USB external drive, which I back up not everytime I update the library (200 gbs spare bundle over USB2!), but regularly. I fear these recently imported files, have not been backed up before up erasing cards, and upgrading system OS, have gone.
Is there any way of getting into the library via finder, or elsewhere in iphoto to refind the original master files which are in there somewhere? These files opened perfectly in iphoto before the recent upgrade.Thanks for the fast response. I've followed your directions and can't find the file in there, in Masters, Originals, or Modified folders. I found files in Thumbnails folder though. Some of the files from the same event are fine, so its not consistent. I'm also noticing that another file in the event has a totally blurred preview (Its a 24mbs Jpg from a Nikon D800) - not sure if this is at all connected.
The positive news is that my NeoFinder database of drives indicates I should have the 'missing' files on another computer in the office, but I'm still scratching my head on this. -
I am locked up in slideshows in IPhoto, a message comes up "the volume for "some picture" cannot be found, Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and wait for it to appear on the destop, then try again." you can hit find photo, cancel (which it will not let you) or OK which does nothing, I want to delete this slideshow, or at the very least get out of slideshows, how can I do that?
