The volume you have selected may not be extended

Question

I just added a new hard disk to our Windows 2003 R2 server with SP2. When I try to extend it, I receive "The volume you have selected may not be extended". kb841650 has been installed. What could be the problem?

what is your aim ?
You can only extend volumes on the same disk.
Example: You have a disk of 100 GB, and you create a volume of only 50GB. You can extend this disk up to the remaining 50 GB in the same disk. You cannot extend a volume to use another disk.
In your case, your two volumes (Partitions) are using the full disk space, so you cannot extend.
If you want to aggregate two disks, you have to use a striping tool like to have RAID0 for example. But only when you are dealing with new disks.
I guess you are using virtualization. So you are attaching VHDs (Hyper-V) or VMDK (VMWare).
To extend a VHD, backup first  your machine (Make a copy of the VM VHD or VMDK)
Use a tool to extend this VHD (or VMDK)
Then when you start your VM, you will be able to extend, becasue you extended the entire disk, and you will find available space where to extend
