The wake from sleep issues

My problems have been a couple of freezes, one boot from sleep, but a UPS overload almost every time I wake up the machine. APC RS1500, nothing connected but the late 2008 Mac Pro and the monitor. Never happens on a cold boot. I figure this has to be just another wake from sleep issue. Among us on this forum we have tried everything but burning incense and waving chicken feet, to no avail. Surely people at Apple are using this computer too and are aware of our problem. After all, it is a pretty obvious problem. My plan is to keep the faith but not hold my breath. Meanwhile, if any of us actually comes up with a solution, I would be very glad to hear it.

My new MacPro 8-core 2.8GHz (early 2008),
running 10.5.2 with all available updates,
every time restarts when coming back from sleep.
AppleCare Second-Level-Support knows about the problem,
as you can "read beetween the lines", when you talk to them,
but is not allowed to admit it,
because otherwise, thousands of MacPro customers
would be eligible to return their Mac to Apple ...
My advice for the time beeing:
Don't send your MacPro to sleep!
Wait for a firmware-upgrade that will solve the issue.
BUT - call AppleCare (and your dealer) OFTEN,
so that they FEEL the pressure of unsatisfied customers!!!
But also, don't waste your time (and theirs),
doing what they want you to do with your machine,
to solve the problem,
because this is only said to calm you down!!!
Wait for the firmware-upgrade!

  • Thinkpad X220 X230 wake from sleep issues??

I am looking to buy either an X220 or X230 Thinkpad laptop and have been reading the forums here for information about wake from sleep issues for these two machines. I have found a lot on the X220 - seems to be a common problem, so I am now thinking that isn't going to be my choice.
My questions for those who may have experienced this with an X230:
-is the wake from sleep a common issue with the X230 laptop?
-is this more of a SSD issue than a regular HHD?
-is this related to the amount of RAM installed?
-is this more of a Win 7 issue? If so, any version that is more susceptible?
I had an HP laptop that finally was unusable due to this issue and want to avoid that with a new laptop. I really like the features and size of the x230 - and that I can still get Win 7.
Any input on how often the X230 has this type of issue - and any solutions that have worked - would be greatly appreciated, as I really am reluctant to have history repeated with this wake from sleep issue.
    Thanks!

I've got a similar problem. For years, and through many OS & security updates, before going to bed I've been setting both Energy Saver settings to 3 minutes and then rebooting. The computer slept nicely until I hit "Return" in the morning. Lately hitting Return only wakes it up after the first night, the second reboot reacts in a couple of ways:
    1. The computer won't sleep, but the USB shuts off.
    2. The following morning the computer wakes up but the USB and the monitor doesn't.
The only way to deal with this is to hold the power button down until the machine shuts down. Clearly, something is not right. The Mac needs to be shut down after only one reboot. If it's not shut down it won't sleep.

  • Yoga 2 Pro - Wake From Sleep Issue

    Hey Guys,
Just recently purchased a Y2P (i7 256gb) less than a week ago. The issue i am currently experiencing is when i wake the laptop from sleep, usually at least 15 mins of sleep, the laptop will come up but then the system is considerably laggy/slow & then becomes completely unresponsive so much to the point that it seems as if it freezes. I am not able to move the mouse (trackpad & usb mouse) & the keyboard buttons do not work/register anymore. Pressing the power button does not put the laptop back to sleep but i can still see everything on the screen from where i left off before closing the lid & the laptop goes into sleep mode. Only way i can recover from this issue is to do a hard reset by holding the power button until the machine powers off & then to boot it back up.
Also, i have updated the BIOS & did all the windows updates from a clean install of Windows 8.1 (different from a factory reset) in order to avoid the Superfish vulnerability. All the drivers have been installed as well (confirmed by the Device Manager).
Any other people experiencing the same problem & have any potential fix for this issue? Any help on this matter would be much appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    You can try this -
Go to Control Panel >> Power Options >> Change Plan Settings (For active plan)
Click on Change Advanced Power settings
Under Sleep option, Change the Hybrid Sleep option (to the opposite of whatever is set right now for both On Battery and Plugged In)
Also, not sure if fastboot is enabled on your laptop but you can try disabling it. Google "Disable fastboot in win 8.1" and you will get the results.
Let me know if any of those helped you.

  • PowerMac G4 Wake From Sleep Issues

I have a PowerMac G4 Digital Audio with 2gb of ram, and a 768mhz processor. I just upgraded to 10.5 and have started to use it regularly for media streaming.  Everything works fine, except for one thing.  I put the Mac to sleep, and when I wake it up, I get the spinning beachball and after a few seconds the screen freezes.  This problem occured before I installed Leopard, but I thought that the upgrade might fix it.  I read somewhere that this might be because of Kernel Panic, but I don't know much about that either.  Please help!

Wake from sleep is usually due to USB, Firewire, or PCI card issues... what all do you have installed?
In 3 recent cases tis solved the problem though...
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6of it's things.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Delete old Log files.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions. :-)
Besides, once you really, really need it... you can't install it!

  • OS 10.10.1 update didn't solve wake from sleep issue

Since I installed Yosemite on my late 2009 iMac 27", it doesn't wake from sleep properly. I get a grey screen with my account photo and nothing else. A hard reset is then all that helps. I have disconnected all audio devices and zapped the PRAM, to no avail. Any ideas?

Something wrong's here. If you have a Retina, that means you have a flash drive - which means a boot time of maybe twelve seconds.
Since it's a new machine, I strongly suggest you visit your local Apple Store. Please post with your results!

  • Macbook 11" - wake from sleep issues - Apple can't fix!

I've had this macbook Air 11.6" since Nov. 2010. Basically since day one I've had issues with waking from sleep from time to time. ( on average, it happens about 1-2 times a month. ). Basically it can happen anytime, this morning it happened after I had used my computer for a few minutes, then I shut the lid, carried it downstairs, opened the lid and it wouldn't wake, so I had to power cycle.
I've called Apple a few times about it and had it into the store twice - once they replaced the display and the second time the lady cleared some cache ( file with contents of RAM that is written to disk when sleep is entered? ).
Does anyone have details on clearing this RAM cache? When she did that I didn't have the problem for two months!
Also does anyone know if Apple has fixed this SW bug? Does it happens with Lion? ( I'm on 10.6.8 update now )
    Regards,
    Randy Krakora

    Have you solved this?
Got the very same issue with my mbp 13".
Most of the time, it won't wake up after going to sleep. Typically when it slept longer than 15 to 30 minutes, but not always.
Brought it to apple and they told me they fixed the issue but that was not the case.
This is a very tricky issue because it is intermittent, it takes time and it is thus hard to demonstrate at the Genius Bar.
Been struggling with this for several months with the hope to find a way to reproduce the issue but without success... and apple is unsupportive.

  • Macbook Pro wake from sleep issue in Bootcamp

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro is running 10.7.2 with the latest bootcamp software.
I use Windows 7 while at work and Lion when at home.
The issue I am having is that when I am working in Windows 7 and I put the MBP to sleep by closing the lid and when I wish to start using W7 again I just reopen the lid and everything seems to be fine but what I find is that webpages seem to start hanging.
If I open a constant ping to the default gateway of my laptop (time capsule) I notice that every now and again i will drop packets.
If I do the same on another Macbook no Pings are dropped during the same period so I know its not wireless interfearance or issue with the TC itself.
If I reboot the MBP and start in W7 again all is fine so it seems its only an issue with W7 and waking from sleep.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi there.
Both my wife and I have started having this problem with our MacBooks in the last few weeks. On waking from sleep the screen is black (though in the right light you can see that it's active, just not backlit), and the Mac goes to sleep again within a minor or so. Both Macs are less than a year old.
I discovered a fix by accident: give the machine a sharp nudge once it's awake! Makes me think there might be a problem with the motion sensor, in hardware or software. May disable it if this continues.
    Hi Mike,
I'm not sure this is really a solution to "sharply nudge" or slap your laptops. If the sudden motion sensor is bad, this is something we should be able to diagnose and have Apple repair. But I'm not entirely sure we have the same issue. For starters I have a 240GB SSD drive in mine that should have no sudden motion sensor, if I'm not mistaken.
These are bright, horizontal bolts, that shoot in perpendicular lines. The irony is that I cannot record them on-screen directly, but have to do so using a hand held camera. I also used the "Apple LCD Tester" and the striping does NOT appear on any of the solid images it kicks up.
I have yet to be able to isolate the source of the disruption and (as I mentioned before) it has a brand new logic board and the problem persists.
BTW, it's not my intention to hijack this thread. I think these threads are related and the only reference I've found in all of the discussions is the one mentioned here. I can start a new thread if I've violated protocol.
    Thanks again for everyone's help.

  • EMac wake from sleep issues.

    Hello all,
I'm having issues with an eMac and sleep. It is an ATI graphics 1GHz machine running OS 10.5.6.
When I put the computer to sleep and wake it after a small amount of time (about less than 5mins) everything is fine.
If the machine has slept for a longer period of time and I wake it the screen comes on however just shows a large blue square in the middle. I can hear the fans and the hard disk spin up but nothing else happens. Holding down the power key for a restart is the only way to get it up and running again, keyboard commands, e.g. sleep, don't work.
Only connections are a USB Apple keyboard and mighty mouse and an ethernet cable to a router.
The same thing happens with all cables disconnected.
Runs fine otherwise. Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

I put the original hard drive back in and it has solved the problem.
I noticed that the drive sits very close to the heat sync system, the replacement drive may produce more heat than the original?
As for my quest for more storage, I installed the 120gb drive in place of the combo drive and all works fine.
For info: The original drive is IBM Deskstar 7200 60GB IBM-IC35L060AVV207-0
The other is Wester Digital 7200 120GB WDC- WD1200JB-00DUA5

  • U430 BIOS Update Procedure (fixes wake from sleep issue on Windows 8.1)

Hopefully this will make the BIOS update process a bit easier.  The following steps address two common questions (Failed BIOS Update and the Windows message about improperly configured Secure Boot).  NOTE: After a successful BIOS update you will want to check additional items in the BIOS not directly covered in the steps below (e.g. Intel Virtualization.... the update disabled this for me.)
    U430 BIOS Update Procedure:
    1. Download the BIOS update from Lenovo (it will be in .exe format... the program will install new BIOS).
    2. Shut down computer.
    3. Use the "Novo" button (tiny button on left side near Power button).
    4. Enter BIOS setup.
    5. Under "Security" select "Secure Boot" and choose "DISABLED" (this allows the BIOS update program to work properly).
    6. Under "Exit" select "Exit Saving Changes".
    7. Computer will reboot. Log in to Windows (it will have a message stating "Secure Boot not configured properly" this is expected).
    8. Run the Lenovo BIOS program (this will reboot the computer and you should see an update status screen). Once finished, the computer will reboot. Log in to Windows (the "Secure Boot" message will still be there) and then turn the computer OFF (I've found that turning off the computer from the log-in screen doesn't completely shut down the computer. If that's the case then hold the Power button until it does shut down).
    9. Use the "Novo" button and enter BIOS setup.
    10. Under "Security" make sure "Secure Boot" is ENABLED.
    11. Also under "Security" select "Restore Factory Keys" and hit Enter. Select "YES" (this step along with our previous step will make Windows happy).
    12. Under "Exit" select "Exit Saving Changes" (computer reboots and all should be fine!)

    Hi,
Generally speaking, this problem should be caused by hardware driver problem. Such as Graphic driver, NIC driver, etc. Please check computer driver edition, make sure  they are compatibility with Windows 8.1.
Actually, I made a search on Acer official site, the model of your computer doesn't have all hardware driver provided for Windows 8.1. Such as Graphic driver. You can refer to the link below for more details.
    http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers
In my opinion, it would be better to contact ACER, to check whether this serial computer had the same problem with yours.

  • MBP - Occasional Wake from Sleep Issues

    Hey everyone:
I've got a late-2011 MBP running OS X 10.10.3.  Occasionally when I close the lid, it will go into a "deep" sleep mode.  In a normal sleep situation, the front light will flash every few seconds when it's sleeping and when I open the lid, it'll pop back up either to the desktop or the password prompt depending on how long it's been down.
When it's in the deeper sleep (which has been going only for the last few days), I'll open the lid, the screen will stay completely black, and the front light will STOP flashing, like it's totally dead.
Press the trackpad buttons and/or keyboard.  No respose.
Press the power button for a second and the sounds of activity will start.  The screen will come up with a blurry version of the desktop background, a password prompt, and an orange checkmark next to my user name.  Enter password, some progress happens, and it'll then go to a gray screen and a "normal" password prompt.
Enter password there, then a progress bar starts across the bottom of the screen, and it will eventually go to the desktop and function normally.  This whole process takes about 3 minutes from the point that I press the power button.
As an experiment, I decided to close the lid and put it to sleep over and over to try to replicate the problem.  It took four tries.
What's happening?  I've done some research and read a few articles, but I haven't yet found anything that helps.
    Thanks!

Alright, so I found another chat thread that seemed to point out that some people had some wake-up issues after replacing their RAM with new memory from Crucial.  On my MacBook, I replaced my factory memory (2X 2GB, Samsung) with some non-branded memory from a private sale, about 14 months ago.
Since some folks seemed to think this was RAM related, I decided to do some swapping.  Here's what I found, and again, the problem was when the lid was closed on battery power, it would either go into a deep sleep or hibernation or full reboot to get it to wake up.
2 Factory Sticks - No problem
Replacement stick #1, Factory stick #2 - No problem
Replacement stick #2 alone - problem....
So there it is.  The machine operated perfectly normally with both replacement sticks in it.  They registered and were shown as 16GB total memory in the system screens.  However, this sleep problem was still present.
So now, I've tossed "Replacement Stick #2" and have installed "Replacement Stick #1" and "Factory Stick #1", which totals 10GB and all seems to be well.
    Thanks for reading......

  • Wake from sleep issues

In the past month our G5 Mac has been unable to wake after long periods of sleep. In many cases, the Mac starts to stir (you can hear the drive begin), but the computer freezes and must be cold-booted. Further, the fan will run at a very high speed, then slow...also requiring a cold-boot.
Is this a common issue? Does anyone have any recommendations on what to do or what issue we may be facing (hardware, etc)?

    epbarnett-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boads.
The first step would be to unplug all peripherals except keyboard, monitor and mouse. Plug the keyboard and mouse directly into the Mac if they are wired-use no hubs.
If the problem goes away, add devices back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If you still have the problem, we will have to dig deeper.

  • Anyonr else experience wake from sleep issues with early 2009 mini?

I have my early 09 mini attached to a 22" Samsung monitor vis the mini dvi-dvi adapter. This morning i went to wake the monitor and it responded right away normally but then went black. I tried to wake it again i got a screen that was just noise. Like the photoshop noise filter. It required me to hit the power button on the monitor and then it cleared up.

I would like to share that I also have experienced display problems with my Mini. My problem was that when my mini would put my monitor into power save mode, the screen would display a noisy picture when returning out of power save. Sometimes it would clear up on its own quickly while other times the problem would persist until I put the mini fully into sleep mode and then wake it up again. I have since taken my monitor and mini to the Apple store where the Genius Bar examined the problem and gave me a new Mini. The new one is still sealed and sitting in my office. I'm skeptical that it will perform any better. I know for a fact that my monitor is in good working order because it is currently running on another PC and has never shown signs of being faulty. For the record, the LCD I own is a 25.5 inch Asus monitor connected to the mini using the mini-dvi to dvi adapter. At the apple store they tried the mini-display port to dvi adapter and the same problem occurred. I'm really hoping that the display issues can be fixed with a software update. I've read on a number of forums that mini owners have complained about the noisy picture when coming out of power save mode. It's clearly a common problem and I would have to assume that Apple is aware of it by now.

  • ACD 30" has wake from sleep issues

I have an apple cinema display connected to my mac mini by the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI. Intermittently it will not come back. It comes up with line filled color bars and sometimes scrambled. Sometimes it will come back looking perfect. If I unplug the minidisplay port plug and replug, it will come back perfect. I have tried to isolate it in some way. I have used two different machines first my MBP and then the mini, a different dual Dvi adapter and a different cinema display and intermittently I still get the issue. I think it has something to do with the mix of the screensaver, sleep display time and the computer sleep time. Some mix is jinxing it. Any ideas? I appreciate your help and input.

here is one the screens I get: http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVGCNB0
Sometimes the images move or the lines wiggle, sometimes it is just immobile. I think it has something to do with the mix of screensaver (using the iphoto screensaver choice) and the display sleep and/or computer energy saver sleep.

  • "Connection Lost" on boot + Wake from sleep black screen and racing fans

When my iMac boots, I receive a "Connection Lost" symbol indicating the Bluetooth Mouse, yet Bluetooth is not turned on. How do I get rid of this? I have been having the "wake from sleep" issue for the last few weeks (black screen, racing fans) and wonder if this is somehow related.
I have reset pram, nvram, trashed the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file, unplugged the computer, repaired permissions, etc. to no avail. I have to power down with the power button and reboot every time it goes to sleep. This is getting very annoying. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I used to have a similar problem when I used a Kensington Turbo Mouse Pro (not wireless). The computer would wake from sleep in the wee hours on its own and in the morning it would be so hot I could fry and egg on it. The Mouse was obviously so sensitive that any slight vibration would trigger a signal to the computer and wake it up.
Also I got the connection lost message on startup even though Bluetooth was not turned on. I figured that for some reason the Turbo Mouse was not discovered in the startup process. When this happens the System gives a warning that since no mouse was connected, I would have no way to control the computer and it advised me to turn on a Bluetooth mouse. It would then search for one for a minute or two. I just unplugged the Kensington Mouse and plugged it back in and I would usually get a message informing me that a mouse had been detected and the startup process would continue.
As soon as I substituted a Mighty Mouse for the Kensington Mouse, everything has been just fine since. I also uninstalled the Kensington Mouseworks software and started using USB Overdrive which gives far more options and a far better Mouse feel than the Apple Mouse settings.

  • MAC AIR Crashes on wake from sleep

    Dear All,
I have a user's Mac Air exhibiting the ubiquitous 'wake from sleep' issue that seems to have reared its head at every OS since 10.2, increasingly occurring with or without various apps running at time of sleep.
Upon tapping space bar after a night's sleep, we get a login screen with sometimes the desktop background, sometimes black, but always with the login panel available but tantalisingly NO blinking cursor or ability to enter password into the box for logging in.
Solution even after 20-40 mins (user is a patient person :-) is to press and hold the power button.
Syslog examination upon reboot shows nothing at all for the corresponding time period, just the info pertaining to the hard reboot.
...This last fact makes me think it is below the OS level and to do with the SSD power management / SMC / firmware relevant to both the above - if I am correct, after a couple of hours sleeping, as the laptop considers it is now in deep sleep, the contents of RAM get written to the SSD.
So, upon wake up calls from peripherals or built in mouse/trackpad, IF it cannot load the data written to the (still sleeping??) SSD back into RAM, then of course logging in will present a problem ?
I'd love to finally get to understand this completely, especially as it has occurred with all recent versions of the MAC OS, and on pretty much all hardware (acc to google).
Like many of us over the years, with previous OS versions' wake-from-sleep issues I have just taken the varying anecdotal advice (run /sbin/fsck/ -f/y, or fix permissions, or reset PRAM / SMC / trash windowserver prefs / apply combo update etc etc etc, turn around three times and kiss a back issue of Mac User magazine) and moved on...
.... this time, with yet another OS version, this annoyingly prevalent bug undermines my enthusiasm for continuing with Apple (I rely heavily on various remote access apps and having a non-local machine not wake up for me could be be a huge issue).
Anyone delved deep into this one and come back with an answer ?
Currently I am toying with using terminal to remove the hibernation aspect of sleep ..
    Show settings:
      pmset -g
    Change:
      sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0
    or, change aspects of it.
I am distressed though that the famously user friendly (and my personal favourite) OS has me resorting to its equivalent of the command line just to get a user's laptop to reliably wake from sleep - it's 2014 and this should have been sorted soooo many moons ago.
    Thanks for reading,
    Andy
