The way iPhoto makes choices for slide shows?

So far I have been having very good luck with iPhoto and slide shows using the "scrapbook" layout. It is doing about 99% of what I want. Here are my current 2 issues:
1. As I see it, iPhoto is determining, based on the photo, what kind of presentation to use for each picture (whether it is vertical, horizontal, the 5 pane with the oval in the center, etc.). My question is whether there is a way to control that for a particular slide? Can I force a picture to be horizontal? Can I force which picture is where in the 5 pane slide? Sometimes that oval overlaps an important piece of the underlying photo.
2. My second issue is that I have a woman sitting in a chair with a baby laying on her lap. iPhoto insists on making a slide of the woman, but crops out the baby on her lap. How can I force more of the picture being shown?

It’s not the size, it’s the Aspect Ratio - whether it’s landscape or Portrait layout.
My question is whether there is a way to control that for a particular slide? Can I force a picture to be horizontal?
Only by cropping the pic into landscape
Can I force which picture is where in the 5 pane slide?
Make sure it’s the fifth pic in the sequence

Software choice for slide show

I recently tried PSE 8.0 for creating a slideshow for the first time as an experiment. In the past I have used Roxio and many other freeware programs. My slideshows are generally 30-60 mins long with 200+ slides and small clips of movies. I also like to add music as background. Here are somethings I found out:
-PSE was much faster (than Roxio) to add, delete or reorder photos to the project as we go along.
-Major drawback (compared to Roxio) was with audio ( unless someone tells me how to do it differently). There is not much control available. There is only one track available for audio. So if you want to blend two or three audio clips, or precisely start and finish any audio clip corresponding to a specific slide, or add volume envelope to increase or decrease at different times of the show, you cannot do it.You can do all these in Roxio.
I just wonder if anyone has much experience of these kinds of issues with Photoshop or any other slideshow SW. I appreciate if you could share your thoughts.

I would recommend the 30 day free download of Photoshop Elements 9 with Premier Elements 9 then buy the bundle from Amazon and simply input the product codes.
The two programs integrate and you have far more output options from the slideshow editor in PSE via PRE including avi, mpeg, h.264, iPhone and direct upload to You Tube.
The sound mixer will also give you greater versatility with multiple sound tracks plus narration.

Pdf for slide shows

When I create a slideshow in Photoshop Elements .pdf is my preferred file format to save the show.
One of the nice features of .pdf for slide shows is the 'fade out /fade in' transition between slides, which has been functioning on my laptop, even if slide changing was set to manual.
I recently downloaded Acrobat Reader for iPAD. Although slide changing was no problem the 'fade out /fade in' effect was gone. Is there any way I could get it back?

My Photos app works the same on iOS 5 as it did on iOS 4 i.e. I can have a different track for each album. When I select a track for a photo album I then start the slideshow so that it shows the first couple of photos with the track playing - I'm not sure it's necessary to start the slideshow but I always do and it remembers that track for that album.

I just remembered I have a couple of screen snaps online to explain how
it's done:
1. place your base image and name it in the inspector
2. from the smart objects palette grab the head action item, the one
with a question mark in its upper, green half - the 2nd one from the
left. Drop that into the pages head section.
3. in the inspector set the action to run OnLoad and select the base
image that you named in the first step and set the other parameters.
This was done in the days of GL6, but not much had changed in GL CS.
Anyway you might also refer to GL's online help. It describes how to set
up all the actions that ship with GL.

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Then try deleting the library again.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

You don't.
Slideshows are exported as movies and these are very large files. Email is not an appropriate medium for very large files as they can cause immense issues for the receiver.
Better to share some other way.

Using downloaded songs for slide show background music

Maybe I am naive, but I just joined iTunes and downloaded some music to use as background for slide shows of family pics. I am using Microsoft Plus! to put the slide shows together. The iTunes songs downloaded in MPEG-4 and the Plus! code will only recognize MP3. I am also concerned that the copyright protection will make the songs not useable for the slide show compilations. Any ideas? Thanks!

In iTUnes you can burn the song to CD then reimport it as a MP3. Goto edit>preferences>advanced tab>Import sub tab, and set it from "AAC" to "MP3" then hit OK
Now burn the songs to CD in itunes. Put the CD back in and hit the "Import" button in the top right corner of itunes

Video adapter only works for slide shows.

We received the Apple video adapter today. It appears that it only works for slide shows? It might also work for Keynote, but we don't use that much and haven't installed on the iPad. For our purposes, we'd like to be able to display from other programs- Numbers, Pages, and a PDF reader. This seems counterintuitive to business use if the adaptor isn't fully functional. We are hoping that a software upgrade will make the adaptor functional.

The iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter can play content to a VGA display when using the following apps:
Videos
Photos—Slideshow playback only
YouTube
Keynote
Safari—Video content on webpages

Exporting for slide show

When exporting an album from iPhotos to create a slide show, it tells me that it is "unable to create........." whatever file name I give it on the desktop.
What is the problem here?

I'd first export a self-contained movie (File->Export->QuickTime Movie) and see if that plays OK in QuickTime Player. If it does, then convert it to H.264 for uploading to youtube.
If it doesn't play OK in QuickTime, post the Sequence settings you're using in FCE for that project.

In iTunes go File -> Library -> Organise Library -> Reorganise Library.
Then quit and restart iPhoto.
Pity Apple didn't either warn us or set up a bug fix!

First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.

What are the 3-bit field choices for Hw_Arm_Sel in PCI-6601

I am programming our own driver to operate the PCI-6601. For our application we need hardware arm option. I know it is possible to use 2 counters for that, but NI-TIO should support also hw_arm. Although it is not explained in the registry document at all, after some tedious check in the DDK examples I found that this bits are located in the Gi counting mode register. I know the position of the HW_enable as well as the position of the 3 bits for pin sellect options. What I do not know is What are the 3-bit field choices for Hw_Arm_Sel . I contacted NI support but got no support. How can NI sell boards and when a customer who is not using LAbview or Measurement Studio or DDK, but is implementing his own driver is then so arrogantly turned down from NI? Also, how can NI publish just part of the registers the board support, and when a customer contacs and asks for some registers get not at all support? I can not foretell the missing registers, and it is pretty unprofessional to document just partly the registers of 660x devices. And on request you got nothing.
I hope someone from the community know about this Hw_Arm_Sel 3 pin options. Otherwise, there is just an option of error and trial. Or simply throw the board in the garbage.

I have some more information for you :-)
I haven't been able to speak to the developer who is the most familiar with TIO programming since he's out of the office, but I have come across his notes from when he was writing support for the DAQmx driver.
As I described earlier, the HW_Arm_Sel bits don't select a connector I/O pin, but an internal trigger signal. There are seven internal trigger lines, and the HW_Arm_Sel bits map directly to the internal trigger signal: 0b000 - 0b111 map to 0d0 - 0d7. In order to route an I/O pin to an internal trigger, you must also write to a few more registers.
From what I've read, there are two more register families that need to be programmed: TG_x_LevelEdgeReg and TG_x_CombinationReg, where x is the internal trigger number. In your case, you only need one pin from the I/O connector to be your arm start trigger, so TG_0_LevelEdgeReg and TB_0_CombinationReg will suffice for your application.
TB_0_LevelEdgeReg :: Offset 0x660
TG_0_LevelEdgeReg is only 8 bits wide, and maps as follows:
7..6: EdgeMode
5..0: LESel
LESel selects the I/O connector pin to use as the source for the internal trigger signal. 0d0 - 0d39 will select the I/O pin of the same number. NB: behavior for TG_x_LevelEdgeReg is more limited for triggers 1-7, and only a small subset of the I/O pins can be selected for those trigger signals. Trigger 0 can use any I/O pin. Setting these bits to 0d63 forces the trigger source low, and can be used as a way to 'unroute' it when you're finished with your program.
EdgeMode determines whether the TIO will detect an edge of the incoming signal, or just pass the signal level straight through. When detecting edges, it will latch the signal and generate a single TIMEBASE3 pulse instead. 0b00 sets level mode; 0b01 sets rising edge; 0b10 sets falling edge; 0b11 sets either edge.
TG_0_CombinationReg :: Offset 0x6A0
TG_0_CombinationReg is 32 bits wide, and has three fields of interest:
19..16: CombFunction
5..4: CombTypeB
1..0: CombTypeA
CombTypeA controls which trigger subsystem to use as the source for the trigger signal. Since you're coming from an I/O pin and using the edge/level subsystem, you must set these bits to 0b01.
CombTypeB is similar to CombTypeA, and although you won't be using trigger B, set it to 0b01 to be safe.
CombFunction performs a simple logic function on A and B. Since you're only using a single I/O connector, you only need the A output, so set these bits to 0b1100.
All of the other bits should be set to 0b0.
Unfortunately, I'm unable to test these statements since my test machine is currently being used for another research project. Please let me know what happens if you decide to test.
