The way iTunes ranks podcasts causes stagnant content

Hi there,
I'm a podcaster who has been working on a weekly show since September and I'm confused about how iTunes ranks them. Everything I have read so far has indicated that the majority of the ranking is based purely on number of new subscribers.
There are two things that are very frustrating about this.
Firstly, people will most likely herd and click on the top podcasts to begin with, so it becomes a self-fulfulling prophecy to an extent. The "old guard" of podcasters who started years ago sat upon their thrones in the early days of podcasting and are still there, utterly unmoveable.
I could even live with the above if it wasn't for my second point, and that is that podcasts are not penalised for not being active or current. So for the category I am trying to get more exposure in, while I am languising 27 lines down, one of the podcasts at the very top of the page has not had an update since July 2008, one since November 2009, one since August 2010, one since August 2009, one since March 2011, and so on.
I'm not doing a "this isn't fair" rant, it's more "surely this isn't sensible". I would have thought that Apple would WANT new, innovative, current, ACTIVE podcasts to be getting the attention. The only reason these dead (and in some cases, not very good anyway) podcasts are doing better than us is because they're already at the top (see first point). In the five months I've been doing this, the top 20 podcasts for my sector have not changed once. Surely that kind of stagnation is not good for either new podcasters or people who like podcasts, and like them to reflect the decade they're listening in?
If I'm misunderstanding something, is there anyone who can explain for me? Or I suppose preferably, is there anyone from Apple who might be able to help with making the ranking system a little less punishing for the little (regular, active, passionate) shows like ours?
Many thanks
Jonny

Yeah I've heard that too, but then we have two genuine user reviews (we don't know these people, honest!) who have given 5 stars each, and many of the shows above ours either have one or zero reviews.
I didn't realise the Apple Support Communities had nothing to do with Apple. From everything I've read, it seems like they are completely unwilling to enter discussions on the subject, which is frustrating and a little weird to be honest.

  • How do I change the way itunes stores my music?

When I look at my music library in the finder my itunes music is stored totally different than the way I have it in my itunes source list. This is creating annoyances for using front row for me. I want front row to organize my music exacty as I have it in my itunes source list. I think this all shoud have something to do with the default way that itunes stores music. Anyone know how to change this?

    Franz,
Perhaps I'm not understanding your question, but Front Row should be displaying your music much as it is in iTunes.
You really shouldn't even have to concern yourself with the file structure that iTunes uses in it's library.

  • Can we make CDs with merged tracks the way iTunes plays our libraries?

I really love the way the beginning of the next song begins playing in the last seconds of the previous track played. However, I can't get the CDs I burn to do that, even when I select 0 seconds for the space between tracks. Can it be done or is this a PLAY ONLY feature of iTunes?

is this a PLAY ONLY feature of iTunes?
    Yes.

  • Can you change the way iTunes counts plays?

Ok, so iTunes counts plays by every time you listen to an entire song. In other words, you have to listen to the entire track for it to count as one play. However, the iPod counts plays by how many times you listen to a track regardless of whether you finish it or listen to the first ten seconds. Is there a way I can make iTunes count plays the way my iPod does?

Are you manually managing your music and using lastfm scrobbling?
You can get scrobbling to "count" a song before the end, but with itunes, the last second has to be played before the counter increments, like ed2345 posted. And scrobbling with manually managing has a known bug.
Anyway...I just clicked back and forth and played a few seconds of 2 songs about 5 times each, and their play counts are still zero in itunes. What you're seeing isn't normal.

  • Difference between the way iTunes U looks on iPad and iPod

My college has an iTunes U site that looks great on a iPod/iTouch. All of the topics are categorized, providing users with easy navigation. So the user interface on the iPod/iTouch of iTunes u is much as if they were using iTunes U on a computer.
Yet, the user interface of our iTunes U on the iPad is quite different. The navigation is awful and somewhat scattered.
Does anyone have an idea why this is occurring?

Awful and scattered seem to me to be subjective observations. I've never used iTunes U, but as I am looking at the site on my iMac and compare it to the way it looks on the iPad, I see some similarities and some differences. I'm sure that the fact that there is not as much viewable area on the iPad had something to do with the way It is laid out for viewing.
Observations just viewing on my iPad ...
Using Case Western Reserve v Penn State, I notice that. Case's site is set up with categories, notable and see all. Penn State's site just shows collections. Case's site appears to me to be more specific and maybe a little easier to find what you want because of the more detailed set up. Do the individual universities have input in how the iPad iTunes U is set up???

  • HT5295 Does anyone else have an issue with the way iTunes fails to properly sync a podcast downloaded to an iPhone or iPad when connected to iTunes later?

When I download a podcast directly to my iPhone or iPad and listen to it I expect it to reflect that status when I come home. Instead the podcast downloads again in iTunes and then wonderful joy it changes the status to unplayed and I wind up having to figure out what I've listened to and what I haven't (I listen to a lot of 'em).

I'm not having issues.  What have you done to troubleshoot?

  • When I open iTunes store I only have the options 'iTunes U', 'Podcasts' and 'App Store'. I don't see 'Music', 'Books' etc. How do I get these?

    As in the heading.

Unfortunately you don't. Not all content types are available in all countries (due to licensing and in some cases a country's laws etc), and in the UAE there are only Apps, Podcasts, iTunes U and free books (a full list of what is available where is shown on this page) - so unfortunately you cannot purchase music, films, tv shows or paid for books from Apple. Are there other media purchase download sites in the UAE that you could use ?

  • How iTunes Ranks Podcasts When Searching by Keywords

Hi all. I have a podcast called OperaNow! I have been doing since 2007. We have 125 reviews, almost 200 episodes and have been producing fairly regularly for that time. A few breaks here and there, but have stayed up-to-date.
My question is how iTunes determines what is listed when you do a keyword search. If you search for "opera", and then filter down by "podcasts" on the right it has a listing if 10 or so opera related podcasts. You can then press "see all" to see w longer list. My show is buried so deep it's amazing. We used to be higher up but have dropped down over the years.
Is this listing also determined by recent subscribers/activity? Some of the shows in the top 15 haven't producded new material in a few years, yet there they are. I'm just a bit confused as to how this is determined?
    Any ideas?
    -A frustrated podcaster

The methods the Store uses for ranking searches and choosing featured podcasts are shrouded in mystery. they may well be related to the number of subscribers, the frequency of updates, the perceived interest of the podcast itself, or any other factors. We don't know, and they aren't telling.
There isn't anything you can do about this except to make your podcast as interesting as possible, which I'm sure you are already doing. You are, though in competition with thousands of other podcasts.

  • How do I change the way music displays podcasts on my ipad 2?

On my iPod nano, iPhone, iMac the podcasts are listed with the most recent ones at the top.  On my new iPad 2 the oldest ones are listed at the top.  How do I change the display settings to show the most recent ones first?
    2) If I go to check my email when I'm listening to something, when I go back to the music app it shows the top of the list again, instead of showing where I was.  Frustrating!!
    3) Usually the menu at the bottom of the music app can be customized (for example I want "podcasts" to be one of the choices instead of "songs").  Is there any way to change this?
    Thank you very much!

Goto slideshow>music your library of songs will come up choose wat song u wish to play then start slideshow.

  • Configuring the way iTunes transfers music to the PC

iTunes is creating too many folders in my PC. How can I setup iTunes to save the songs by GENRE ONLY regardless of the album, the artist or the song title?
    Please help!
    Thanks ☺

You cannot change the file structure that iTunes creates.
You can import with something else that does what you want then update the folder by having iTunes import it again. Be sure to uncheck "organize" in preferences or you will truly not be enjoying things

  • The way iTunes organise files

Is there any control on how iTunes organize the library? I've got over 700 movies. iTunes made so much files on my drive. If I make 10 short videos with my cell phone and import them to my library, iTunes put every single video into a subfile.
I selected the videos and put them on an album through "get info", but they still remain on different files...

Yes, I have the "keep ..." performance checked and it works for MP3s but not for videos. For example if I make 9 short videos with my cell phone called 12345670 to 9 and import them, iTunes put them into 9 subfolders called 12345670 to 9. Now I change the tags of this videos through "get info", but they remain in their folders. So I have more than 700 subfolders under "movies".
**The problem is iTunes DOES NOT revise video files when you change the tags**

  • Itunes has changed the way it stores files over the years and now i am having trouble figuring out which files are where so I can back them up

    Hi
I have backed up itunes by copying my itunes file to an external hard drive. I try to keep my large media files (like TV shows) in a separate folder so that I can keep my hard drive on my macbook from filling up.  Problem is, apple has changed the way Itunes is organized and backs up over the years.  Now I am having a hard time keeping straight what is where.  When I go to support, it has different instructions for the various versions of itunes. I  am using version 10 now but it seems like I can't see all my files within the itunes music or media folder.  I want to get everything in one place so that I can easily back up, regardless of which version of itunes I am running at the time.
I have selected to let itunes organize my files.  It keeps all the files I have purchased in one place apparently, but items I have imported don't seem to always be there.
How can I best sort this out?

I have, but if I don't have that particular external hard drive connected when my time machine backup hard drive is connected, then I don't think it is all backed up together.  It is getting too complicated to get out all this equipment every time I want to buy some music.

  • I need help in the way my Itunes Library shows on my Windows PC

I am a novice. I liked the way Itunes sorted my Library which was by Artist, album, and the had the tracks in order. However, I did something and now I cannot get it to restore that way. I can get any one (like album) but then I canot get tracks in order ie it will do all the 1's and then all the two's etc... I just want it to be simple

  • I have the following error The file "iTunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes

Can anyone help me with this problem.  I tried updating the latest itunes and it caused an error MSVCR80.dll missing.  I then tried fixing it after reading other people had the same problem and a solution was given about uninstaling itunes and the order in which to do that.  I did that but now get the error "the  files "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created with a newer version of itunes.  I see a solution has been given about this but I cannot find what is suggested to enable me to follow instructions.  Can anyone please go through step by step (letting  me know where I can find what is needed) to enable me to be able tio log into itues again.  Thanks

    Hi pussygalore,
If you are having issues with iTunes after an attempted update, you may find the following article helpful:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
You may want to make sure that in the last step (reinstalling iTunes) that you are installing the latest/newest available version, and not attempting a reinstall from an older file.

  • Once tunes are matched, how can I organize them the way I want?

On my itunes library on my home computer, I list my artists the way record stores sell them-by last names.  Itunes match lists them differently.  For example, "McCartney, Paul" (the way I list him in my library-last name first) is listed as "Paul McCartney" after the itunes match.  So essentially, itunes match creates two different listings for that artist but only on my phone and if he ever did a duet, that would be a whole other problem/listing.  My itunes on my computer lists the artists the way I want to organize them, but I have to accept the way itunes files on my iphone.  Seems match will give me the song file but not allow me to organize it as I'd like.  This might seem trivial to many people, but I have over 20,000 songs and right now it's one big ugly mess on my phone, but the library on my home computer is fine. Can something be done to remedy this?  At this point, I'd entertain another program if it promised to do a better job of organizing things the way I'd like them.

why can't you use the keyboard the way it is printed?
