The "WIndows 8.1 explorer slows down gradually" thread.

The (now locked) previous thread was:

I don't know why it is locked anyway, as EMKOEMKO was one of the "founders" of that thread months ago.
So... to summarize:
Explorer.exe has some sort of problem in windows 8.1, the system UI gradually becomes more and more unresponsive/jerky. Most notably DWM related funtions. As soon as you relaunch explorer.exe the problem dissappears and gradually comes back after a few hours.

Hi,
Compare the two process monitor logs, the log with the problem shows that the explorer.exe access the shellex more frequently and last a longer time than the log without problem, explorer issue can usually caused by imcompatible shell extensions, we can
use ShellExView to check if it is the culprit, run ShellExView, in the pane sort the entries with manufacturers. Disable all non-Microsoft *.dll files, and check the result. If the issue does not occur, one of the files can be the culprit. We could narrow
down it one by one.
You can find more information about ShellExView in the link below

  • When downloading CS 5.5 from the direct link it eventually slows down and stops.  How am I supposed to download the file?

I am trying to download CS 5.5 on to my new laptop since my old one died.  I am using the direct link found Download CS5.5 products.  It starts off fine but it slows down and eventually stops.  How am I supposed to download the entire file?  I am using Chrome on Windows 8.1 if it makes any difference.

Adding to What Anand has mentioned, please make sure that any online active Defence system should be turned off ( For eg, Kaspersky, Norton or AVG ). Also, if you are behind a corporate network, please try a different network and check again.

  • In FF 17.0.7 I'm getting an inermittant "jerking" problem where the window intermittantly move up and down. My Norton File Insight says this is a Firefox probl

This started happening around Version 17. Running Windows 7. When the screen "jerks" the window moves up 1 line over the title bar and then goes back down. It seems to get worse when more tabs are open, and longer the program is running. It also doesn't accept text when th jerk ocurs ( I just quit correcting errors and see what happens.I don't see any abnormal activity coincident with the jerks on TaskManager or ResourceManager.
These can happen several times a minute--I've had perhaps 20-30 while typing this sentence. They don't happen just when typing, however.

  • Trying to download Firefox and as soon as the "run" box appears Explorer shuts down.

Using Explorer, I'm trying to download Firefox. As soon as the run dialog box opens, Explorer shuts down. What do I need to do to download Firefox.

Does that happen with anything you try to download in IE, not just when downloading Firefox?

  • While working in multi camera editing in FCP X, having only 2 angles, after cutting for 30 minutes, the editing starts slowing down gradually until it becomes unbearably slow. Can someone tell me what is wrong?

This is the second time I am using the multicamera editing mode. The first time I used it with 2 angles of HD 720p and it worked perfectly. This time I am working with standard definition vodeo and is giving me this problem.

This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance.
Make sure you're using the latest version - FCP X 10.0.3 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.3.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on the Hard Drive that your System and your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
Create Optimised media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
If you are short of drive space, use ProRes 422 Proxy (FCP X Preferences > Playback) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot.
Move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD (make sure it's formatted OS Extended - with journaled on or off) and run from there.
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • I looked on my C:\ for plugin-container.exe and deleted the file as it kept slowing down my computor, however now when I load firefox it crashes, how can I re-install this plugin to disable it properly?

My computor had been overly slow which was not normal when looking at processes running in task manager I found plugin-container.exe to be using alot of memory. I looked online and found that this was an update of firefox which was not essential, I then looked on my C:\ drive for the application and deleted it hoping this would solve the problem as I could not find it when looking at my firefox plugins. However now when I open firefox it quickly crashes, how can I reinstall this? Do I need to reinstall firefox completely or is there a more simple solution? I have done the firefox plugin check and it can find no problems.

Probably the easiest way is to download Firefox again from http://www.mozilla.com and re-install it.
If you want to disable plugin-container, see the section on "Disabling crash protection" at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins

  • Infinity slowing down gradually

So I've had BT Infinity 2 since the start of the year and I was originally estimated 66 Mbps (due to the condition of my line which has since been replaced as well as being put on a new pair at the cabinet) but on connection I actually got 72 Mbps.
Now, several months on I'm having issues with my speed. It's still high but I found that I was soon put on a 66 Mbps profile as per my original estimate. Now I seem to be on a 58 Mbps profile.
I have a perfectly clean line (I should hope so after all the issues I had when I first signed up!) and I'm using the master socket in my bedroom as verified by all 3 engineers that came out (the extension in the living room has never been wired up and is definitely NOT the master socket).
I'm using the Home Hub 5 but I also get the same speeds using the HG612.
Details from the HH5 are: (I've just reset the HH5 prior to these details to see if it would speed things uo but no luck)
    3. Firmware version:
Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.173.1.6 (Type A) Last updated 02/05/14
    4. Board version:
    BT Hub 5A
    5. VDSL uptime:
    0 days, 00:09:32
    6. Data rate:
    20000 / 54000
    7. Maximum data rate:
    26445 / 77109
    8. Noise margin:
    14.9 / 7.9
    9. Line attenuation:
    0.0 / 14.4
    10. Signal attenuation:
    0.0 / 14.4
And from the BT further diagnostics page:
If anyone has any ideas on what the hell is going on I would appreciate it!
The upload speed is ok (I get around 17-18 Mbps on speed tests and in actual uploads), it's just the download being way off what the HH5 says my line is capable of.

I did think that DLM might be doing something here but I just find it strange that it has always said around the 77000 Kbps mark on the maximum my line can handle and when the engineer first came his machine said my line is capable of approx. 100 Mbps.
Wouldn't the "Maximum data rate" on the HH5 be acuurate based on the current noise margin?
My noise margin has been around 7.5-7.8 ever since I got the new line and had a new pair on the cabinet and I've been sat at 66 Mbps since the line went live in March. If there's a fault on my line I would be surprised as BT changed the equipment at the exchange and tried me on 3 pairs at the cabinet due to issues in the past.
The engineer was here all day doing tests all along my line and by the end of the day he had me on a faultless line.
I know about the crosstalk issues but I'm not so sure that would be the problem as there aren't many people on fibre at my cabinet as most people down the street have Virgin Fibre (I couldn't get it due to Virgin not installing it when my block of flats was built 11 years ago).
And just one last thing, I find it odd that I'm connected at 54000 (last week I was at 60000). That seems like an artificial limit to me unless DLM actually forces to the nearest 10k?

  • Does the app store/flight control slow down your computer?

I want to download flight control on my computer. will it slow it down or hurt my macbook pro in any way?

No, It only takes resources when you're running it.  It doesn't take much resource even then.

  • A lot of tabs loads and tells me there was a problem loading the page. How can I stop all the tabs loading because ist slows down Firefox.

When I open Firefox, a lot of tabs try to open at the same time. They all say Problem loading the page. It happened after I tried to download a owners manual for Harley Davidson motor cycles. How can I stop all but one tab from opening.

This can be a problem with the file [http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] and sessionstore.bak in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder]
Delete [http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] and sessionstore.bak in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder]
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.

  • Hello,  I am have problems with coruption of the photos in a slide show after burning the DVD in iDVD.  This coruption does not always appear when you preview the project.  I have slowed down the burn rate to 1X and kept the quality to professional.

I am having a great deal of problems with Data coruption in slide shows after I have burned a DVD in iDVD.  I have changed burn rate from best to 1X with no difference in the coruption.  I have the quality set to professional with no improvement.  The size of the project is near 3.95, so it should fit on a single layer burn.  Should I use either iMovie to create the slide show or "Photo to Movie"?  Also, can anyone comment on how I preserve the highest quality picture resolution with a slide show?  If I do use iMovie or Photo to Movie,  the file size should exceed the 4.2 size so, will I have to buy new DVD's which are capable to handle the double layer burn and upto 8 GB?  What DVD's are recommended?  Any preferred brand?  Are there problems with burning with double layer?  I read on this blog of numerous problems.

DVDs are LOW resolution by today's standards - only about 0.3 megapixels - so there is no way they your images on a TV set will look "High Definition".  See Preparing images for iDVD slideshows at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6675.html for recommendations on image sizes to use.  Using larger images won't give you better  quality, andf in some cases, will lower you image quality because  the Quicktime resizing that occurs isn't the best.

  • Ever since I upgraded to OS X Lion the start up process has slowed down substantially. Any suggestion to speed it up again?

Ever since upgrading to OS X Lion my startup time has become annoyingly longer. Any suggestion to speed things up again? Thanks for your help in advance.

Launch the Console utility and look for gaps between the timestamps of messages during startup that might explain the problem.

  • Can the Picture Frame change rate slow down?

Twenty seconds is *way* too fast but appears to be the slowest it goes. Ideally something like twenty *minutes* is what I'm after.

Yes, I saw that slideshow feature in Photos so was disappointed to find that the Picture Frame feature is simply the very same thing! While I would agree with Apple that 20 sec is probably ok for a slideshow, where the user is concentrating on the screen and actively *watching* it, a picture frame is entirely different, it's just glanced at occassionally. A picture frame that flashes up a different shot every 20 secs is very distracting.
I suppose there is the solution of using lots of duplicates of each shot in an album to extend the time each is on screen, but even a 10 minute duration would need 30 copies of every image!
Thanks again, I'm back to the App store now [even that is not straightforward - trying to find a photo app that is not all about adding tacky effects shouldn't be so hard. ]

  • The monitor is slowing down  the machine, 23inch

The monitor seems to be slowing down the machine. This is the reason we upgraded from a dual G4. When we work on 16 bit images it goes very very slow, but not if I change to a CRT monitor. What do we need to upgrade? Add another 2 gigs of ram for a total of 4 or get a 512mb video card.
    Thanks

I can tell you now, it's not your display that causing the problem. I have a Mac mini driving a 24" display (1920 x 1200 resolution) that has the Intel integrated GMA950 graphics processor with 64MB system memory which is the lowest of the low and it drives it just fine.
Most likely you have a RAM problem as in you don't have enough of it. If you are using Adobe Photoshop CS2 I would suggest a minimum of 2GB RAM with an aim for 4GB RAM.

  • Why is Windows Dev Center soo slow in the UK?

Whenever I try to log in to dev.windows.com Windows 8 dashboard to upload apps or check my statistics etc. It is sooooo slow. Every other app website is super fast like Google Console or IOS. But the windows console is very slow. When/if I finally manage
to log on. I dread pressing the details button to see the stats because I could be on the page for a few minutes with the little spinning "waiting" icons going round and round. About 50% of the time the stats never load at all and the waiting icons
    just go round and round....
Is it just the UK that is slow to log on to the Windows 8 Dashboard or is it everyone around the world? Or is it just me? Am I assigned to a particularly slow Windows Dashboard server?
Surely I'm not the only one? It must be putting people off submitting apps to the app store.
This is not my internet connection as I can stream HD movies fine. It's just this one website!

  • The Internet connection with WRT54GC V2 is slowing down about time.

I upgraded the router to the newest firmware (1.01.0), but the connection with time still slowing down. I turn the router off and then on, and the connection is fast already. After 1 or 2 days the connection slowing down again. What can I do?

Connect your computer straight to your modem and check if you face the same problem...If you don't face any problems through the modem, hard reset your router...
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...If you still face the same problem get your router replaced...
