The Woeful NF980-G65.

Greetings all, This is my first post after being refered here by a friend who asked This community for help a while back. A little about myself, i'd like to say i am a computer enthusiast this is my first gaming machine built for myself after building many for others and i love it to bits despite its little problems, and as said i am also an avid gamer, mostly fond of blizzard entertainments Starcraft and world of warcraft.
I am using the following
NF980-G65
4GB 2x2GB Kingston Generic ddr1333
Amd Phenom II X2 550(3.1ghz Stock have gone to 4.2 stable, but for the purpose of testing it shall remain at stock)
Nvidia Gainward, GTX 460 2GB GLH Edition(Oced factory and by myself, i have 2 of them in sli at 860 core, For the purpose of testing these will remain at stock)
TP-Link Wireless N lite Mini pcie 150MBps Adaptor(Top slot the small one)
Various Drives, every Sata port and ide slot is filled mostly western digital above 500GB and a sata DVD Rw drive.
Corsair TX 650Watt PSU
Dual monitor setup Both are Acer G225HQ's Running at 1920x1080(Probabily irrelevant, but i thought i'd include every spec)
Raidmax Raptor Case.
Windows 7 x64 home premium.
Fan setup 2 Intake, one at the bottom , one custom made sitting below the dvd drive just to drag extra air in. 1 Exhaust, and PSU Exhaust 2 Side exhaust over the Cards to expell excess heat that they flush back into the system
Bios Version 1.2
I guess, i should go through the problems
Before overclocking, it used to 'cleanboot' as in you turn it on and it goes and starts up like normal, After overclocking and even after reseting everything back to factory default even in the bios, it Turns on for 5 seconds then cuts out, then boots up normaly (Only on a cold boot, standard resets after running are fine)
According to PCwizard 2010 from www.cpuid.com and Hwmonitor from techpowerup the Mainboard temperature varies between 86 and 98 degree's when idle and under load, it simply switches at random the rest is below 50 even after a long gaming binge(Except for the GTx 460's ofcourse but they aren't really the problem i don't think)
I have had alot of drama with win7, and i would like to go back to Windows vista the manufactorer and the disc has windows vista drivers, i'd like to return to 32 bit aswell on that but each time i go to reinstall it detects the drives(Fresh isntall too) and gives a "windows could not determine if this computer contains a valid system volume" Error, if anyone could help with that i would be ever so greatful.
And lastly, i would like to know if it is possible to put one of the new 1100T phenom II x6 cpu's in it says it supports the 1090T on the msi site, with Bios version 1.4, just wondering if it would take the 1100T
Thank you for reading, i Eagerly await your reply.

By "resetting" you mean that your unplugged your PSU from A/C power, then >>Cleared CMOS<< and loaded "Optimized Defaults" in BIOS Setup after restarting the system?

See if directing a strong fan at the chipset heatsink will cause a drop in mainboard temperature.

  • Using 1800*-2133(oc) ddr3 for the MSI NF980-G65

I have been trying to figure out what the fastest STABLE ram for this Mobo is. The MSi tests only go up to 1600 MHz. I've been looking at the brand/series of modules that have been tested at 1600 and are available with higher speeds. Does anyone have any experience using 1800-2133MHz on this board? If so, what kind and how's it running? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  • The causesof NF980-G65 MCP'S temp

    Hello
I bought this board for about 9 months also. I bought that after some months research and only for HYBRID SLI .But i found after that NVIDIA  and MICROSOFT dont support that in the future. So i made to sold my cards( 9800 silent and 9800 with fan) and waiting for a new way.The 460 GTX satisfied me and at the end i closed my pc door!It is very stable up to now and i am doing everything that i want with ease ( I believed that searching the internet more and more works!)
I posted some topics at the summer . The heat of NF200 that use this board was a problem with the heat of 2 9800 GTX here in IRAN. But now at the beginning of winter every thing is ok. But always as a mech. engineer that likes heat transfers problems it always is in mind and i try to be ready for next summer!
There is some theory about the heat of 980 chipset. ( Remind that it is a powerful chipset and you can use 3 sli with 16x-16x-8x that you cant get it with this price in an Intel platform neither in an AMD one.also you can use PHYSX with the onboard graphic if you have a[/img][/img][/img] separate vga ).
    1- bad sensor report
    2-bad thermal adhesive for heatsink.
    3-bad heatsink
4- software of the chipset( bios, driver)
    5-hardware of chipset
    I tried these ways:
1- I separated heatsinks and used some extra adhesives but no change.
2-I used a small fan(3 cm dia.) on chipset. I stick that to chipset with a liquid glue  and plug to one of mobo. SYSFAN plugs. It worked and droped about 10 degrees in summer. But now i dont use that and unplugged that for the noise( little fans are always noisy)
3-I downclocked of onboard vga and it worked .
After all and with a look at my 460 gtx it seems that some changes must be used:
1- 460 gtx is downclocked to 55 in ideal automaticly but in 980 it always is constant about 375.
2-980 uses an old process for production and it makes more heat.
3-a bigger heatsink or special one must be used by msi ( It may cause this mobo be a special one!)or  give an option for using fan( like some evga mobos although according reviews they are noisy)
4- place of chipset must be far from vga slots .It is very important when you use SLI platform becauce when vga covers this small heatsinks and radiates their heat to that it caused a raising in temp.
But after all i suggest that with using  460 gtx( because short lenght and less heat of that) for a perfect platform.( Up to know. I may change my opinion!)
    Happy new year every one!

    Hello
if you mean graphic card i mean GEFORCE GTX 460 ( 768 MB OR 1 GB VERSION) .
    I use EVGA one.
we can reach to a 480 gtx performance ( most powerful graphic card) with SLIing of two card .
I checked the core clock with EVGA software ( EVGA PRECISION) it is exactly like MSI AFTER BURNER.

  • New MSI NF980-G65 AM3

This is my first mobo swap i have ever made. I am wondering what i should do besides the obvious unplugging everything and plugging it into the new mobo. As i am a novice in this area. My specs are below, i am getting a new amd x4 and the MSI Nf980-g65 am3. I would like to know if there are any problems i should expect or anything i should do to prepare for this swap or any general information or handy knowledge just to know. Thanks for you all your help. I just wish for my first mobo swap to go smoothly.

If yor not reinstalling your OS, first download all of the latest drivers for your new system (graphics, motherboard, sound, etc). Find and download DriverCleanerPro or Driver Sweeper. Then uninstall all of the chipset, graphics, LAN, sound and motherboard drivers, noting what they are (nvidia, creative, ATI, Turtle Beach etc etc). After uninstalling the drivers, reboot into safe mode (hit F8 after the BIOS screen goes away) and run your driver cleaning program. Que up all of the drivers you uninstalled and remove all entries then shut the system down, swap the hardware, boot it up and install the new drivers for your new stuff.

  • MSI NF980-G65 Memory amount installed. "Poll"

I'd like to start a poll here to find out how much Ram & what Brand & sticker # you used, example "F3-12800CL9-2GBRL' or whatever. I do have the QVL sheet, but not all Ram is on it & I'm just curious. Did you install 4 or 8GB or more on this Mobo?  If you contribute your info here in this poll, It just may help other people who have this Mobo make a choice on what you think is the best ram for this Mobo for an Intel or AMD CPU.
Please don't tell me Gskill Ripjaws series Ram is not compatable with AMD CPU's. I have Gskill Ripjaw ram @ 1600Mhz installed & I'm using a Phenom X4 965 CPU,on the MSI NF980-G65 Mobo. The Gskill series Ram is not all specified for nothing but Intel CPU's. The Package for my Gskill Ram clearly states, "For use with AMD CPU's." So lets have poll here.
At first I installed 4GB of Gskill ripjaw Ram. only 2 sticks/ 2GB each. "F3-12800CL9D-2GBRL" They run Great @ 1600Mhz with a Bios ajustment. From what I've read on other Tech forums it's better to use only 2 memory slots then all 4 slots. Less stress on the CPU. Then I installed 8GB of Ram 2 sticks/ 4GB each. NICE!  Tell me & those who find this poll what you used if you wish. Thank you
Edit: Edited name of topic to the correct full name of MB. It is not 980-G65, it is NF980-G65.

Nothing I see asks about what runs better or performance results. This thread is over 8 months old. So let's cut to the chase & just advise everyone to stick with RAM tested on the mainboard in question with whatever brand & number of GB, & in compliance with the platform's native supported specifications. If wanting to use RAM that is rated above supported platform specifications & expect it to work trouble free without any tweaking, it doesn't always work out so well. Post in the OC Section of the forum if trying to run 'anything' above native supported spec.
The thread IMO, was ill conceived from the start. Why perpetuate it any longer? Most people disregard the actual facts & buy whatever is the flashiest & had the best advertising & marketing scheme.
Do people still really think a pretty heat spreader is saving their RAM from total destruction? Too funny!

  • MSI NF980-G65 CPU heatsink selection

Hey guys, I'm ordering my new cpu tomorrow, Phenom II x4 965 BE, the new 125w revision. My motherboard is the MSI NF980-G65.
I need to figure out which of the top end heatsinks will fit without interfering with my ram.
    G.Skill Trident.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231282&cm_re=gskill_trident-_-20-231-282-_-Product
Dual channel mode with 2 sticks utilizes the first two slots I think.
The ram measures 2 1/8" tall to the top of the heat spreader.
So far the cooler i'm most interested in is the Scythe Mugen 2 but the thing looks huge, from what I can tell folk with AMD boards have had success by mounting the fan so it's raised a bit, thus clearing the ram. I dont know if this would affect the cooling being that the fan's offset ?
I dont know how high the base of the fan sits by default, judging from the pictures it's not very high, so i'm guessing i'd have to offset it by at least 1".
I'd like to orient it to blow out through the back of the case as opposed to vertically into the psu.
The other option would be the Corsair H50, I have a modded side panel and I could mount the rad/fan to one of the 120mm holes. This option eliminates all the fitment issues, having said that i'm still not convinced the H50 is all it's cracked up to be, seems there are many mixed reviews.
I am open to other suggestions if you guys have any. With the right cooler, a couple of gin and tonic's and a lot of luck i'll be able to hit 4ghz, at least that's my goal
The case is a Cooler Master Praetorian with great air flow due to a couple of side, top and floor panel mods.
This is a brand new build and i'm hoping to have it all ready to go by the weekend so i'd like to get set on the right cooler by tomorrow, i'd hate to have to return it and delay the building !

I have the same board and am using a 945 95w version. I have the Thermalright 128-SE. It's a bit lower then others and just fits in my 4u rack case. I have a 120mm AC PWM fan on it which blows down. Right now i have min fan speed set down a notch or two and Hwmonitor is reporting fan at 75% and cpu cores at ~25c at idle. It keeps the cores at 40-45c under stress test. And yet even at full speed you can't hear the fan over drives and other sounds. A little bigger fan would easly hand a hotter cpu.  Just be sure to order the am2/3 brackets.
Also the upper part of the heat sink is offset a bit to the side with the small pipes. hang that over the ram and it will help keep them cool, though my G.Skill 1600 ripjaws don't seem to need any help staying cool

  • Core Unlocking on NF980-G65

I'm thinking about upgrading my motherboard from an ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe to the MSI NF980-G65 with a Phenom II 550BE but I can't find any decent reviews anywhere about this motherboard to date.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone has tried to unlock the cores of x2 or x3 core Phenom II's using NVCC with this board and how it went as I would like to unlock the 550BE with this board.

I'm trying to find the first propper thorough and independant review of this motherboard where the writer physicaly has a NF980-G65 board so it can be benchmarked and compared against Asus's board with 980a chipset and current AMD chipset boards. I want to read the reviewers opinions.
The difference between mainboards using the same chipset is non-existent.  When some boards are faster than others it's usually because the manufacturer has tweaked stock memory sub-timings within their BIOS.
MSI's and ASUS' boards are also manufactured by the same company [Foxconn].  So expect the build and component quality to be the same.  The only real difference would be features, BIOS configuration and board layout.

  • New NF980-G65 with an AMD X6 1090T and the BIOS Update Utility Crashes?

Last week I received my new NF980-G65 board and with it an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T (Thuban 3.2GHz Socket AM3).  After installing the board and starting it up for the first time I noticed that it reports BIOS version 1.1 and CPU unknown.  Next I downloaded the BIOS update to version 1.3 from msi, made a boot USB stick and powered up again.  System will not boot from USB.  I tried now over 20 different sticks from 256MB to 64GB and none of them worked!
Went back to my old system and ripped its floppy drive out to install it in the new computer.  Had to go to RadioShack since I have not touched a floppy in over 10 years, but they had some on clearance.  Made me a boot disk, put the new BIOS and install utility on it, booted the system with the floppy, started the BIOS update utility and watched it crash.  When I start it by itself it gives me three screens of options and commands, but as soon as I try to use one of the commands or update the BIOS it keeps crashing.
What do I have to do to get the BIOS on the NF980-G65 updated so it will run with my AMD X6 1090T processor?
Thank you in advance for ANY help...

What thing are you talking about?  You are experiencing the a certain symptom for which you do not know the cause.  For some strange reason and without any in-depth tests you seem to assume that the board must be the problem (ignoring all other components (for example your factory overclocked memory modules).

What support have you tried to get that actually has to do anything with money?  Please note that this is not MSI Technical Support but a User-to-User forum, run by users (just like you) that do not get paid for donating their private time to try to help others.  Whatever your level of frustration is in regards to the money spent for your components, please do not use it to insult anyone here in this forum.

  • Does the NF980-G65 support RAID arrays over 2TB?

Looking to build a new machine fro Windows 7 (and switch to 64bit at the same time), and the NF980-G65 seems to be the closest board to my needs, just a quick question, does the onboard raid controller support raid arrays over 2TB in size? I had a look at the manual and it has a section on migrating an array to a size over 2TB which would suggest it does, but I would like some confirmation as to whether it does or not.

I've run into this problem with some raid cards when building servers for work, as they were unable to address raid arrays over 2TB and would not allow the creation of the array, I am wondering if the raid controller has the right level of LBA to create a 2TB+ array. I am aware of the need to use a GPT partition to have a partition of over 2TB.
