The wonders of screen sharing!

I finally got it working after I realised that you have to deselect Firewall 'block all access'. Two Macs can share each other's screens - bizarre - see for yourself:

Hi,
I know. Its brilliant. Played with it with my Nephew yesterday. Swapping files. Superb.

  • What's the difference between Screen Sharing and Remote Management?

As the title asks. What is the difference between the two?
Because heres the thing. I set Screen Sharing on in Sharing. Then a few days later I will go back to the Sharing preferences and instead of Screen Sharing being checked. Remote Management is now checked, not Screen Sharing. What's the deal? Is that normal?
I was wondering if it was because I log into my iMac sometimes using my iPhone with that Mocha VNC program. Its the only program I use to remotely control my computer. Is that it?
Any help I can get is appreciated! Thanks!

Remote Management provides support for the additional functionality of Apple Remote Desktop as compared to a standard VNC setup. The options are otherwise identical.

  • Can I hide the cursor when screen sharing?

I'd like to hide the cursor on the screen share device. Is that possible?

You want to hide your cursor when sharing your screen?
You could always hide the cursor in a corner of your monitor and then use keyboard commands to navigate your application, or, if you have second screen, leave your mouse cursor on the non-shared screen.
There is no method of omitting your cursor from your screen share, as that is part of sharing your screen. There is the option to show the 'application' cursor, instead of the Connect Presenter cursor.

  • Using the CTRL key in Screen Sharing

I am using native OS X screen sharing to share my Mac OS X Lion iMac screen on my Mac OS X Snow Leopard MacBook Pro.  I am using it to run Xcode since I can't run the latest version of Xcode on my Snow Leopard machine (2006 MacBook Pro).  It works great with one exception - I can't seem to find out how to do a CTRL-drag operation.  In Xcode, you use CTRL-drag to link objects to their controller.  It works fine if I perform the operation on the iMac that is sharing its screen.  But it doesn't do anything on the MacBook Pro screen sharing session.  Is there a way to get the CTRL-drag to work in the screen sharing session?

I have the same issue with Interface Builder. It's weird because CTRL-click works.

  • I cannot connect to the server – screen sharing, Server Preferences,...

    hello
I have a problem with xserver. Everything seems to be working ok, however, one day system started to break down.
I cannot connect to the server through *screen sharing* neither through internet, nor through local net. Even after restart login wont shows up.
I cannot also connet to the *Server Preferences* (Unable to authenticate to the Open Directory master.)
Sometimes I cannot also connect to the *Server Admin* (but after restart it works, however, Server Preferences are unavailable).
    SSH works ok.
Nor repair permission, neither verify disk, or update for OS X server 10.6.4 worked.

  • Screen sharing - resizing the window?

Okay, I'm having a "special child" moment.
I'm using screen sharing not with iChat but to work on files and user groups on an XServe running Leopard Server. The problem: The window for Screen Sharing is too small. I'd like to resize it by dragging the lower right-hand corner. However, whenever I go to do so, I can't actually grab the corner because my mouse goes into the shared screen where the corner does not exist to drag. If I move my cursor farther out, I just end up clicking past the window and landing on my desktop or an underlying application.
    Am I missing something here?

    Hi,
You are using the Finder's go Menu > Go to Server with a VNC:// type connection that invokes the Screen Sharing App ?
    Go to the View Menu
    Turning Off Scaling may help.
    Also Showing Toolbar may help.
I found best results in grabbing the bottom right corner with Scaling Off.
I also Looked at the Preferences and there is an option for Viewing Screen that are larger than yours.

  • Lion and others Mac 10.6, I cannot see Screen Sharing on the network

    Hello all,
Since I've install Lion on the Mac Mini I cannot acces (and see) on the network in Screen Sharing. I can access all other Mac on 10.5.8 and 10.6.x easily. In the prefs all is exactly like before I upgrade this OS...
Is someone can give me an issue.
Thank and have a great day!
    Paul Dionne

I'm not sure what you are and are not seeing from which computers on the network.
Note that whatever your prefererences were before has no bearing on fixing your problem.
Which computers can you see, and from which computers.
What type of file sharing do you have enabled on the 10.5.8 and 10.6.x computers, AFP or SMB?

  • Locking the remote screen in screen sharing?

    Hi,
10.5 had the option in screen sharing to "lock" the remote screen when you were accessing it via Screen Sharing... I still have it in my notes (love me some EverNote) and it went something like this...
    defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing \
'NSToolbar Configuration ControlToolbar' -dict-add 'TB Item Identifiers' \
    '(Scale,Control,Share,Curtain,Capture,FullScreen,GetClipboard,SendClipboard,Quality)'
Specifically the "Curtain" option... I've tried doing the same thing on 10.6, but no dice, and have resorted to changing the brightness to zero in System Preferences   So my question is...
Is there any way to lock the remote screen when I am accessing my home mac via Screen Sharing?
    Thanks!
    Jay

The lock switch is the only way to prevent rotation, sorry.

  • Screen Sharing works for alien hosts but not for LAN hosts

    Hello!
I am having a really strange problem in a customer network. The network is a local private network with one MacOS Server 10.6.8 and around 12 iMacs running MacOS 10.6.8. The server is running headless in cellar so the user maintain the backup via screen sharing from an iMac to the server.
Since a few weeks they can not login to the server via screen sharing from any local host BUT I can login from my MBP (alien) via ARD or Screen Sharing without any problem. Even hosts connected to the network via VPN can connect to the server via screen sharing.
    In short:
Every local host gets a message that login is not possible and my MBP and VPN-hosts get connected without any problems with the same credentials.
At the local clients I get this message in system.log:
    Oct 28 09:33:41 verwaltung1 LKDCHelper[228]: Starting (uid=501)
    Oct 28 09:33:48 verwaltung1 com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[166] (com.apple.Kerberos.renew.plist): Throttling respawn: Will start in 530 seconds
Oct 28 09:34:17 verwaltung1 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Ma cOS/AppleVNCServer[195]: CGSKeyTranslateInitialize: KLGetCurrentKeyboardLayout or KLGetKeyboardLayoutProperty is not available, fall back to USA keymap
and at the server I get:
    Oct 28 09:33:48 solserv AppleVNCServer[11503]: no such user: adminloc@LKDC:SHA1.DE03ABCC86F74D11AD139E44388D6B94155B4D9E: 2
When I connect from VPN or my MBP I get no messages in system.log.
I tried to kickstart ARD at the server but it does not change anything, I bound the clients to OpenDir of the server with no effect also.
I do not have any idea what is happening here. Every help is welcome,
    Christop

    Hello MrHoffmann!
changeip says "The names match. There is nothing to change."
To give more infos, the server and all the clients are connected to the same network switch, all belong to 192.168.183/24 and when I use my MBP, it is connected via WLAN and gets an IP-address from this server with an IP from this range. my MBP is in the same broadcast domain.
VPN clients connect via PPTP to the gateway (192.168.183.1) and get IP addresses assigned from 192.168.183.48-52.
There is no routing between the clients and the server.
There is no other problem - every client reaches the server for file serivces (AFP/SMB), smtp, imap, DHCP and DNS.
BTW. screen sharing from the clients worked without a problem when I first setup the network about 1 year ago, but since a few weeks no client that belongs to this network can use screen sharing except for my MBP when I am at customer site.
    History:
The new SLS is a replacement for an old Windows 2000 Server. Both servers ran in parallel for some time but within different IP-networks (all Macs at 192.168.183/24 - all Windows at 192.168.2/24) the gateway routed between both networks. But now it is time to switch off every windows computer because every service now runs at the SLS. AFAIK the windows 2000 Server is the last Windows machine in the network. We switched off DHCP at the windows server and switched on DHCP at the SLS a few weeks ago. Hm .... maybe there is something wrong? But the clients have fixed ip-addresses.
Still wondering what is going on here, bye,
    Christoph

  • What has Remote desktop over Screen sharing?

I´m was wondering to get Remote Desktop but after Leopard I´m not sure. What has Remote Desktop over Leopards screen sharing ability? I cant see that I would need the other stuff...

If all you're interested in is sharing screens, then unless you need to be able to see multiple screens at once, I doubt that ARD would give you anything over the built-in screen sharing in Leopard.

  • Screen Sharing between Lion and SL?

I was about to purchase the new Mini Server but saw that it has Lion pre-installed. So I assume it won't run under Snow Leopard, which would have been my preference. As my other machines are all running SL and having no plans to change this soon, I am wondering of screen sharing would work between my MacPro (OS 10.6.8) and the Mini (OS 10.7).
Does anybody have experience with such a setup?
    Thanks.

I will try it and see later but it will be this evening, (about 10 hours from now). FYI, mine are both all but standard Macs on a standard network. The Pro is wired the mini wireless. I have nothing like Remote Desktop installed.
If I don't reply, send me a message later. I may have forgotten.

  • Can you use screen sharing outside of your local network?

I've been poking around with the "screen sharing" in osx Lion. I have a few questions about it.
Firstly, is the built-in screen sharing only accessible through the finder?
Also, is it only available on local networks? I've gotten it to work on two computers on the same network. But, can I use in the built-in screen sharing to look at my work iMac while I'm at home on my Macbook? Or would I need a full VPN client to do this? (Although isn't there built-in VPN compatibility in Lion?)
    Thanks!

  • Screen sharing and dual displays

Hi, i added a second display on an iMac and often screen share using my MacBook but since adding the second screen i've had issues screen sharing. It will briefly show both the iMac's displays on my MacBook but then cut out with "connection lost", then find the connection again, then lose it etc etc. Sometimes i can select just the first display and it'll be fine but usually the connection keeps dropping and firing up so quickly that i can't get it to just show the one screen.
I unplugged the second display and everything worked fine as it always has done. Is this a known issue to be resolved in 10.5.3? If not is there a way i can change the default in screen sharing so that it'll just show me the first display? I don't need to see the second display particularly so that doesn't bother me.
    Thanks, Simon

It may or may not be a common problem, since I screen share a 2-screen Mac Pro from a MacBook Pro and have not seen this problem. I always get both screens.

  • Screen sharing and login

I've got a mini running Leopard and a MBP running Snow Leopard. I'm trying to use screen sharing in finder to connect to the mini from the MBP. There seems to be something preventing screen sharing whenever a user is logged in to the mini, even if the login occurs in screen sharing.
Here are some examples of the behavior:
If I'm logged in as "macuser1" on the mini, I can connect to the mini as "macuser1" or "macuser2" and see folders, etc in Finder, but, when I click the share screen button, I get a connection failed message.
If I go to the mini and logout, then go to the MBP and connect to the mini as "macuser1" I can see folders just fine. When I click share screen it connects just fine and I see the login screen on the mini. If I enter a username and password it logs in just fine (I can see it logged in on the mini), but screen sharing from the MBP says "reconnecting" and can't connect anymore.
Something about being logged in on the mini prevents me from sharing its screen.
I tried creating a new user account without success. I could log into the new account, but as I was logging it, I got the "reconnecting" screen on the MBP (but could see that the login worked on the mini).
I've got all the right users in the screen sharing part of sharing settings.
    Any ideas?

have you tried the obvious - restarting the computers involved and the router?
