The "y" key is broken on my keyboard - admin password has that letter

I've tried copying and pasting the password into the admin password box but it won't allow me to do that. I am asking this on my netbook. My admin password has the letter Y in it and I can't type it in to allow the app store to do the upgrade to mavericks. I worked around the same problem with my apple ID by logging in via windows netbook and changing it.
I don't know anyone near me with a mac desktop machine... I cannot afford a new keyboard right now and it is just the Y key and the number 6 key that stopped working when water splashed on it.
Is there no way to reset the admin password? Why won't it allow me to copy and paste it? I can find the letter Y in something else and copy it but it won't allow me to paste it in that way.
Ideas? I mean... if no one knows any backdoor way of resetting the **** thing I can try posting to local groups to borrow or rent a keyboard but it seems pretty stupid. It's a common thing to end up with one key that doesn't work or the cap gets broken... and on laptops it's common to get stuff stuck under keys or to try cleaning underneath and end up with the little mechanism broken. Surely there ought to be a way to reset the admin password in this sort of case... I mean, what if you just can't remember it anyway? Is there no way to change it?
I don't even really want mavericks but it won't stop nagging me and I'm sick of it. I also can't update other software because of same issue.
any help appreciated.

OS X Mountain Lion: Reset a login password
Scroll down to Resetting the original administrator account password. Try the procedure under reset your user password with your Apple ID.
If that does not work for whatever reason you can also use the following technique:
Restart your Mac while holding down the ⌘ and R keys at the same time until you see the OS X Recovery screen.
From the menu bar at the top, select Utilities > Terminal.
In the Terminal window type resetpassword and press Enter. A window will open behind Terminal that looks like this
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD" in the above screenshot), choose your user account from the dropdown selection, enter a new password, complete the password hint field, and click Save.
You may then see a confirmation dialog explaining how this change affects Keychain Access and what to do about it. Remember it or write it down, then click OK.
Quit Reset Password
Quit Terminal
Quit OS X Utilities and restart your Mac.
To fix your Keychain problems, go to your Utilities folder and open Keychain Access. Follow the steps here: Mac OS X: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password.
It will be a challenge to do anything with your Mac given an inoperative input device. Brand new USB keyboards are available for less than $10, and are often simply thrown away in the trash along with virus-ridden PCs. Any USB keyboard will work.

    Hi Moe,
Sounds mostly likje a bad KB, do you have another to test with?
    Or...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Hello gokulaan, '''try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

No you don’t need to uninstall iPhoto but are you trying to edit a photo from the iPhoto Library?
If so export a copy from iPhoto to the desktop and then open that copy in the Elements editor.

  • Why does Time Machine fail to restore and keep the original file after I have provided my Admin password?

I'm attempting to recover a group of lost files from Time Machine. The files are backups from a mobile app within User/LibraryMobile Documents/.
I'm able to find the lost files, but Time Machine failed to restore them after I select 'Keep Both' and then enter my Admin Password. The screen returns to the desktop and the finder window for the file I'm trying to recover, but nothing else happens.
    I hope someone can help.

  • HT1695 Hi. I recently purchased the Ipad with Wifi + 3G but cannot get the Wifi to work. Do I need a password for that?

Hi all. I recently purchased the Wifi + 3G Ipad version and am trying to connect the Wifi but I'm not sure if I need a password for that or not.
I am a bit of a beginner so anything technical goes over my head so would really appreciate any help.
    Thanks :)

it depend on your wifi network
I hope you do use a password otherwise you have an unsecure wifi network which could be abused by other people

  • How can I get the special keys on my external Cherry keyboard to work?

    Hi,
so I'd like to get my external Cherry Evolution Stream XT keyboard fully supported. How would I go on about that?
I know there [is a guide on that issue](https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ex … ys_in_Xorg), but how do I know which keycode/number the volume and other media keys on my external keyboard have?
So I found out the keycodes to the "hotkeys" with xev, just as described on the wiki page:
    keycode 122 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
    keycode 121 = XF86AudioMute
    keycode 123 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume
    keycode 173 = XF86AudioPrev
    keycode 172 = XF86AudioPlay
    keycode 171 = XF86AudioNext
    keycode 77 = Num_Lock
Do I have to put them into  ~/.Xmodmap and it'll be fine? I don't think it could work that way since these keycodes are probably only true for the Cherry keyboard, but not hte Thinkpad's own keyboard.

MagicSkyFairy wrote:Goto Settiings->Keyboard and you can add/delete/edit special keyboard commands.  For examples I have CTRL-ALT-T, which runs the "xfce4-terminal" command, which simply just opens up a new terminal window.
But what's the command I have to enter? I have been googling the commands, but I can't figure out what kind of "action" I have to assign to that XF86...LowerVolume key.
    SOLVED it myself
I coincidently discovered that I had to install asla-utils for the command to work, so I assigned
    amixer set Master 10%+
and other versions and it works. Will have to find some matches for toggling, I guess I'll find them eventually.

  • I want to print from my ipad wth the least amount of issues. I have downloaded some apps that let me print but only out of e mail. What printers do you recommend that print from most apps?

I would like to be able to print from my Ipad 2 with the least amount of effort. I have downloaded a few apps that I thought would be good but they
just let you print from the app and you have to e mail it to yourself to print. I need someone to recommend a printer that I can print seemlessly from most applications and the Ipad will find it.

You need an AirPrint compatible printer, then you don't need any app to print/
Scroll down to the bottom of this page:

Canon and Epson have also announced AirPrint compatible printers:

  • My keyboard has switched the command on the H key to ˙

    Please help!!!

That 'dot' you're getting from the 'h' key is the character that results when you touch the Alt/Option key and the 'h' key together*.
This is an example of the Keyboard character viewer when Alt/Option is pressed.
    http://mac.softpedia.com/progScreenshots/keyboardViewer-Screenshot-90976.html
(The characters in the screen capture displayed above are country-and-language-specific, and may not match your keyboard character map exactly.)
Perhaps the Alt/Option key is stuck?
Another possibility is that your battery has swelled, causing the keyboard/trackpad to generate stray movements and characters. If your MacBook has a user-removeable battery and it seems swollen, you can power the system off, remove the battery, and power back on using the Magsafe power adapter only,  to see if 'normal' keyboard behavior returns.

  • How can I use Automator to toggle the Function Keys?

I am trying to create a Automated process to toggle the Function Keys on my keyboard. This is because I use several programs, including After Effects, which use the F1-12 keys, but when I am not using that program I commonly use the Apple-defined shortcuts on the keyboard. I have a full-sized keyboard, hence no Fn key. So that's out right away – I've read several comments on this topic where people suggested that this is the ONLY option. I refuse to beleive that.
Automator contains a "Watch Me Do" feature, which I have tried to use to record this process. Problem is, it never clicks the right object. If I record clicking the dock, the magnification (I suspect) throws off the virtual-controlled mouse and picks the wrong object. If I record the Apple Menu route, it gets it about 1/2 the time.
I think what I'm really looking for is a console command I can feed into the Terminal which toggles the keys. It seems to be that this HAS to be an option, even if it is more than one line of commands. I believe if I can feed this process into Automator, it would work.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance, Mac Geniuses!

iKey lets you define function keys per application. You seem to want to turn on & off the defined apple keys.  Not sure if these keyboard re-mappers will do the trick.
Here is my other most favored application. Of course, I haven't checked these out in newer OS's. I'm a Tiger man myself.
iKey is a front end program that simulates typing and mouse movements. I use iKey to remap the Function keys.
"iKey is an automation utility, a program that creates shortcuts to accomplish repetitive tasks. In essence, an iKey shortcut is a little program in its own right, but you don't need to know the first thing about programming to create an iKey shortcut. All you have to do is put together three necessary parts of a shortcut: One or more commands that give the shortcut its functionality, a context in which it runs, and a launcher that defines how the shortcut is activated."
    http://www.scriptsoftware.com/ikey/
iKey  has a little more function then the previous free version called youpi key. For many years, I used youpi key before switching to iKey.  It works fairly well for me in MAC OS 10.4 although not officially supported.  The youpi key download is hard to find & no longer here.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11485&vid=75326
( Send me a message for a copy of youpi  key. )
    *Examples:*
I have the common programs that I use assigned to function keys. I have F4 assigned to Firefox. When I want to start FireFox, I press F4. When I want to switch to firefox, I press F4! Starting & switching to an application in Mac OS are the same thing in Mac OS.
Here is an example of to assign volumn control to a function key.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10361085#10361085
Here is my script for listing my application folder. I have it assigned to function-key 6.
    tell application "Finder"
open folder "Applications" of startup disk
       select Finder window 1
       set bounds of Finder window 1 to {-3, 44, 691, 545}
       --set position of Finder window 1 to {33, 44}
       set position of Finder window 1 to {60, 45}
       activate
    end tell
The second portion of this script was generated in the script editor record mode. After I recorded the script and did some editing, I copy the script to ikey/youpi key.

    P16_Carrier Select List
P16_Weight Text Field(always submits page when enter pressed)
I want the people to be able to key in the information and after the weight hit enter and it submits the page. Then it allows you to key in your next loads then when you get to weight hit enter again and so on. I do not want to have to use the create button because that takes longer to key the information in when you have to take your hands off of the keyboard and click create. The problem I keep getting is a branching error and the always submit page when enter pressed don't seem to work. I have version 1.6. Please help

I believe that APEX submits a page when the enter key is press by default. However, I noticed that when you have a hidden field present in the form you get the branching error message. .
If you change your hidden fields to regular text fields, this will take care of the problem. Of course, this may not be the best on your form, showing your ID on a regular text field.
I am not sure if APEX developers intended to have it like this or if this is a bug.
    I hope this helps.

  • The 7 key doesn't work after lion install

The 7 key on my MacBook pro keyboard doesn't work following lion installation. (I'm using my iPad right now obviously!)
When I press 7, basically random stuff will come out. A set of 3 to 5 random numbers or some "command" that whatever program I am in doesn't recognize.
I tried rebooting. I have no idea where to even begin, help!

And of course this morning all keys are back to working again! But last night it was 7, J, U gibberish.
At first glance it does seem like something that might be a hardware problem, but I am deeply suspicious of coincidences like this. I'm kind of like house md that way I guess.  Especially when at least two of us experienced this.
I think I will also wait for the next software update and see if that helps.  At least I have my iPad to use when the keys are on the fritz.
    Good luck!

  • Eject key not working - Tried another keyboard

Suddenly my eject key is not working. I have tried holding it for several seconds. The eject logo shows up on my desktop. Itunes can open the drive, toast can open the drive, eject menu can open the drive. A second aluminum keyboard will also not open the drive.
Since the drive can be opened by software, I need to know what system file to open and what code to look at so I can fix this thing I have read lots of temporary fixes in the forums here (use iTunes or the menu extras eject script) but I want a real solution. It used to work and I want to know why it stopped.
Is there a way to examine keyboard mapping or something??
    Thanks

Apple authorized service provider has replaced the logic board due to various weird problems including sudden loss of startup chime, freeze on waking from sleep and memory issues.
During the repair event (it was an event let me assure you!) the service people noticed the Superdrive was plugged into the number 2 position on the ribbon and since there was nothing in the number one spot, the eject key didn't work. I had tried holding the option key while pressing eject (for drive position 2) but that didn't work either so not sure if switching to connector #1 or new logic board solved this problem, but the DVD tray now opens and closes using the Media Eject Key!!!

  • Remapping the ctrl key

    hi,
i am using LogMeIn Free for Mac to be able to remotely connect to my Mac from the outside world (typically from a PC). as i am starting to dabble in xcode, i have come across a problem: this utility doesnt seem to map the Control key. in the preferences of the app, you can choose to remap the Alt and Cmd keys to a Windows alternative, but nothing for Ctrl.
in xcode, i need to Control-click objects in order to link them. so the question is if its possible to add an additional keyboard shortcut on the Mac, to something the LogMeIn client will be able to handle?
alternatively, is it possible to programmatically create these "bindings"? all text that i am following so far uses the far simpler Ctrl-click method.
    regards

Thanks for your reply Peter. I restored defaults, and restarted twice, but still nothing. Both keys work on an external keyboard, so I think that it's a mechanical fault. I'll send it back next week when this job has finished- let's hope that it's not part fo a faulty batch.
