Themes for iWeb

The Apple App store has a colelection of iWeb Themes under the name "Themes for iWeb". They look nice but there are no customer reviews. Has someone here tried them? Thanks for any feedback!

I agree with Jeff wholeheartedly. If you start with either the White, Black, Modern Frame or Formal theme you can create a customized site to your choosing.  The other themes use graphic files for some of the page designs which can't be removed or resized to fit your design requirements.
There was another user who was having problems with those themes from the App Store.  Something happened and he couldn't find his previous sites. I can't find the exact topic but if I do I'll post a link to it here.

  • Developing themes for iWeb 08

    hello,
I kind of gave up XHTML/CSS/PHP/JavaScript and Wordpress to get back to the bases with iWeb.
i'd be willing to help develop free/paid themes for iWeb 08 and I understand, from what I read that the process is different from iWeb 06 themes.
I digged into the core files but when showing the package content of a particular themes ( say "blog.webtemplate") I cannot find where the graphics are located.
    Anyone has an idea?
Also is there a place that gathers iWeb 08 theme developers?
    thanks

Have you checked this site out:

  • Anyone else buy  "Themes for iWeb" in App Store?

Ok, I sent in my review a second time and this time it seems to have been published. I just cannot get the application to work, but the developer has emailed me and repeated the instructions. I followed them and it still doesn't work in Lion.
If anyone else bought this app from the Mac App Store, please post here, especially if you succeeded in getting it to work.
I have bought themes before off the web, and the download was easy. Just click on the installer pkg and it gets set up in iweb and the themes appear.
But the installation system for "Themes for iweb" is different.
I like a couple of them, so I hope I can get it to work. If I were really expert I could just relax and figure the developers need to fix things, but my level of understanding is such I still have to understand I possibly screwed  up the process. Hope I can get it to work one way or the other.

Which is pretty much a reasonable assumption. And you do not neccessarily need a password for an in app purchase.

Yes, considering all of the traffic they get, it may take them a while. Have you tried using this: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/

What con? Even if it is an error on Apple's system, there's no indication of dishonesty (and I refer back to the first item).

  • Caution:buying themes for iWeb in MAS can be a problem

A few weeks ago I bought Themes for iWeb, and it just didn't work. I asked for help from the developers, but then the changes totally destroyed iWeb and my site.
I now notice another themes for iweb on the Mac App Store and all the reviews say it not only doesn't work, it does the same thing for iweb in Lion. Read all the reviews and the warning from Apple to get a feel for problems that can arise.
I don't blame developers, other than for the fact they should have tested it out. I suspect that last update from Apple for iWeb made it functional in Lion, but without its code, no themes will be working.
Now, I love iWeb, but seeing the handwriting and all, am moving to another website creator. Considering how much trouble I had with the destruction of my site, I want to warn off people from buying any themes package that doesn't clearly say it has been tested in Lion.

I just reinstalled iweb and the updates. Actually, it may be a blessing as it will force me to redo the site and check every link. In the last year a few just don't work anymore.
I find that I can copy and paste pretty well from the site still on the web, and use the old video from YouTube.
Some stuff is gone, but all in all, it was an interesting lesson.
I got cocky because I knew the trick of making sure I duplicated and saved the domainsites file.
I know I had at least one sitesfile that was original and perfect, but didn't work.
    Oh well.
I really do like iweb. Now I think I will not be the first to download software again.
In fairness, while the software didn't work, I did play around in the application support, iweb, themes section a lot more than I should have.

  • Photo album theme in iWeb that are the same as the old MobileMe wanted!?!

I really liked MobileMe and made many Albums with specially design firstside photos. That means they are square with four sides equally long. I put down quite a lot of work and now I would like to get hold on a simple, goodlooking theme for photoalbums with an index with square photoholders. That all I want.
Anybody seen anything like this? Could someone do it or tell how to do it??
    Many Thanx Anyhow!

Yes, but that´s the very problem - I have downloaded and I have 98 different themes of allready made photo albums for iWeb, and all of them got - as You say - a rectangle frame for the indexpage. That will crop the albums first picture in a very irritating way - specially since I remade all of them to fit in a square (like the MobileMe album had). They worked as a frontpage of the album, with text and sometimes with a suitable frame in the picture. In iWeb, they will all be cropped to a middle section of the square.
But in the iWeb´s albums next page - usually a kind of a lightboard, showing all pictures in that album - the square format are kept, likewise in following pages, showing a blowup of each photo.
I think now the only way to get the index to look nice with my square photos, will be for me to add marginals on each side on all the first´s to fill up a rectangle frame. But it´s impossible to do it unvisible. It will be noticed.

  • Photo compression for iweb

A question that i can't find the answer to...
I subscribe to a training library called lynda.com which has fantastic training on iweb.
The one area they don't cover is this.
If i want to create a photo page from within iphoto and just put it on iweb, i have photos that I have not manually compressed size-wise for web compatibility. If I then just either make a slide show for iweb, or just use the media browser in iweb and drag them into placeholders will the end user find the speed of the site slow as i haven't compressed photos for web use, or does either iphoto or iweb do that for me?
In other words, do i need to take photos into Photoshop, crop and save for web first, and then put them in iphoto, or is that just not necessary?
    David Tobin

60 pics is way too many for one page. 15 or less should be your goal.
This site will tell you how long your page will take to load in the different internet connections. If it says over 15 seconds in 56k you have overloaded your page and should break it up.

what will be the new alternatives for iWeb publishing,  Idisk & photo gallery ?

Thanks for the reply that there will be 3rd party support.
One of the main reasons why I went from PC to Mac was because of all these cool features.
Am dissapointed to see them leave.  ( Iweb, Photogallery, Idisk... )

  • What is the best replacement for iWeb?

I have been using iWeb for a very long time. I need to move on to something that is being updated. What is the best replacement for iWeb? I see Wordpress needs special software to work on a Mac.
    Thanks!
    Pat

I have used HostExcellence in the past and they support all the CMS's including WordPress, so you should have no problems there.
The top CMS's that most have heard about and use are Drupal, Joomla and WordPress.
There is probably no best one, but you need to look at them all and use the one that best fits your needs.
I have used all of them in the past, but most recently Joomla and Drupal.  Drupal has a reputation for being quite hard and Drupal 6 was, but with the advent of Drupal 7, things got a lot easier.  There are a lot more themes that you can use and if you want increased functionality in Drupal, then you can download Modules and install them.  You can have a membership site if you want it and this is easy to do - people can sign up for an account and you can restrict their access to certain parts of the site and then limit what they can do.  You can allow people to complete forms on the site itself and the results to be sent to you.  There is a Blog module that you can enable and that comes in Drupal Core with no need to download an extra module.
Joomla is good also and you can have a Blog with it too and there are lots of themes to choose from, but sometimes you have to pay for extras with Joomla - you can download Extensions and Plugins, but they may not always be free.
WordPress was always just thought of as a blogging platform, but it has evolved in to much more than that and you can now create stunning looking websites with blogs - there are a good range of free templates to choose from and if you want your blog on the front page of your site you can have this, or you can change it to another part of your site if you want a static front page.  To extend functionality you can download plugins from inside WordPress itself, most of which are free.  This might be the easiest one for you to use if you just want a website with a built in blog that is relatively easy.
Check out the others though at Drupal.org, Joomla.org and then WordPress.org.

  • Creating forms for Iweb sites

MY question is about creating forms for iweb sites.
    How do you do it?
I think I read somewere that you can't do this with iweb,
so I downloaded a free trial of rapidweaver, which will give me 3 pages for
the free trial, but it says you need php.
Which I don't know if I have php on my computer, my mac5 os x,
and I am not sure what php is.
If any one could explain how I can create forms on my iweb site
in a easy to understand point form.
    That would be great!

Well I am certainly willing to try, if you could
    explain how to do this
    Thanks for your reply.
    blueform,
If you found my first post to you helpful, please mark it as such. That way people will have an easier time searching for/with a similar question about this topic.
Okay, I can't go into all the dynamics of the process as each ISP may vary enough to make my description unusable. In other words, what works with my ISP may not work with yours. You'll need to check out your ISPes position and requirements as far as this goes.
The first and most important thing to check out is does your ISP allow you to use CGI scripting such as PERL or PHP. Many small locally based ISPes allow this feature. Some large ISPes in Canada such as Bell's Sympatico give you Web space but do not allow scripting.
Next, unless you are an accomplished programmer you need to find (ideally) a free script that allows you to e-mail a form. I generally recommend something from Matt's Script Archive The scripts are are simple, come with instructions and work fairly well. There is also PHP Junkyard. I use one of their scripts for a message board I have.
Be forewarned, there is a learning curve. Also, if your ISP permits these scripts, you will need an FTP client application to upload them once you have made any necessary modifications.
As an afterthought, you might Google around and see if anyone provides a service that might suit your needs. Usually in those cases all you need to do is enter some HTML code into your iWeb page. This is not a drag-n-drop process and requires some "under the hood" work. One last point. Most of the scripts that I've dealt with will require an e-mail address to send the completed forms. If all is done according to instructions, Spammers will never see the address (you set the permissions for the file that contains your e-mail address so that only the owner can read that particular file; the owner being you). Does this give you an idea of what is involved?

  • Seeking simplest replacement for iWeb family website

OK, with MobileMe about to bite the dust I am seeking the simplest, free (or lowest cost) replacement for iWeb that offers the following:
    1. Ability to create web pages for major family events (wedding, births, etc.).
    2. Ability to use our purchased domain name to name the site.
    3. Ability to link to our genealogy site and other web info.
    4. Tight integration with iPhones - to import new photos and pages.
Basically, our website is an online scrapbook. I don't really want a blog to tell the world about all our recent activities; I just want a place that mainly offers photo albums and maybe some written content. I'm not interested in Facebook because I want to be able to have the site separate from Facebook.
    Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I can't see why anybody would want to pay this (or any) amount for a simple transfer. In any case, nearly all the files in a MobileMe account should be first downloaded to your Mac since most of us used it for more than just website hosting.
Unless you have a very basic site, you will have folders of assets outside of the main website folder. These need to be uploaded to the root folder on the new server and the URLs to them need to be changed in iWeb. Anybody who doesn't take the time to learn basic FTP and the server file structure is going to have even more problems with this part of the operation!
The actual files produced by iWeb don't need to be moved anyway since its just a question of publishing to the new hosting account using one of the methods shown here...

The first two companies mentioned on this page will move the files for free for new customers...

I have added photos to a portfolio website I'm building and a lot of them look VERY grainy when you click on them. They are nice clean large files and can print bat high res way over 16" x 20" so whats happened to them in iWeb?

When you are dealing with websites, image file size is a trade off between quality and download speed. There's not a lot of point to having high quality images if they take too long to download in the browser.
Nowadays we also have to consider the device that the end user is viewing the images on. An image that is optimized for viewing on a large screen is total overkill and unsuitable for those using mobile devices.
Really we should be supplying different versions of media files for different devices using @media rules in the stylesheet but this is rather outside of the scope of iWeb. If you use the built in image optimizer and the iWeb Photo template with slideshow, the application will optimize the images according to the way in which you set this function in preferences and the slideshow size will be automatically reduced for those viewing it on smaller screens.
If you want to give your viewers the opportunity to view large, high quality images, you can supply them as a download.

  • Drop Down Menus for iWeb: Will They EVER Come?

I've got several websites that I need to update, and frankly probably rebuild from scratch.
I am considering moving them to iWeb. However, the ONLY reason I have not switched over yet is the unavailability of easy WYSIWYG drop down menus for iWeb. It's safe to say that if there was a seamlessly integrated way to create these, I would have started publishing at least four different sites with iWeb...YEARS ago.
So, now, faced with the choice again, the drop down menus question is before me again.
Please understand: I know and understand the various ways they can be manually created. That's now what I'm asking.
What I'm asking is for people's opinion: What's the likelihood that Apple will ever add this functionality to iWeb itself?
If so, any likelihood of this happening soon?
Because if they don't, I then have to make a choice to go through the long and arduous task of manually creating the menus for several sites (and making sure their perfect before we "go live" with the new versions...) And I'll have to weigh whether or not I want to bother with that.
Obviously, I am intentionally asking for your conjectures, unless some of you would like to dish on stuff you know.
    Thanks in advance.

iWeb is discontinued, so the likelihood that it gets the menus you want is rather slim.
And yes, there is a seamless way to add them.

  • New Templates for iWeb?

    Hello~
Does anyone know if there are additional templates to use for iWeb? If so, where can I find them and add them to my current library of templates that came with iWeb?

There are several 3rd party templates. Just do a Google search for "iWeb templates" and you'll get numerous hits for the sites.

  • Is there any Blogger themes like iWeb's blog theme?

I Like iWeb's blog theme, but actually iweb is not easy to use.
Is there any way to export iweb blog theme for blogger(blogspot.com) using?
Or, is there already a theme for blogger which is like iweb blog style?
    thanks a lot.

Is there any way to export iweb blog theme for blogger(blogspot.com) using?
There is no export option of a iWeb theme.
When you publish iWeb pages, the objects (html, images and styles) that make the theme are in the published folder.
You have to edit a blogspot theme to display these objects.

  • SEO for iWeb 09 - Please Help me

I download iWeb SEO Tool today, but when I click on "Open Site", the sites that I've created with iWeb 09 do not show up. Only the ones that i Created with iWeb 08!! This is driving me nuts. Where are the files for the iweb 09 websites and how do I open them with iweb seo tool????

The data is added to the HTML files using iWeb SEO Tool and can be uploaded from the application.
You can publish your site with the iWeb FTP if you really want to! Then add your data in SEO tool and it will upload the change html files to replace the ones uploaded from iWeb.
I don't use the iWeb FTP as I need to optimize my files for faster download and so that my sites will work in Internet Explorer. To do this I need to publish to a local folder anyway.
As I am converting all my media to flash and have to upload folders of media and assets, I also use an FTP application.
Apart from the inefficient code, the other problems with iWeb built sites downloading slowly, or not at all, are the use of the photos, albums, blog and podcast templates.
Using QuickTime for media limits the number of people who can actually see or here it as many more computers have Adobe Flash installed than QT.
