Themes in iDVD

I'm trying to share a slideshow to iDVD that I created in iPhoto. I want to use the theme I created in iPhoto, not one from iDVD. Possible?

Hi
Not really 100%
• You want the SlideShow theme in iPhoto
• But not the one in iDVD ? ? ?
A. In iPhoto You can make two types of SlideShows - Direct in Picture mode - or as a project.
If You make a SlideShow project and select a Theme and then Export it - it will go to Media Browser and iTunes
B. If You don't wan't any Theme in iDVD then - this is more tricky - has to be faked one way or another.
Easy is to use AutoStart box (top left one in Structure display in iDVD) - Drop SlideShow into this and add a Black photo to the Menu display
Now DVD will start to Play Your SlideShow with Theme from iPhoto and end up at a black fill (black menu). As far as I know it has to be like this.
Did I understand You right ?
Yours Bengt W

  • How to make movie in iDVD without themes.  iDVD app quitting during burning

I am trying to make movie without themes and still having problems. I have tried using the map view in themes, dragging movie into the first box on left, looping it - but am seeing a yellow error sign in the theme box. Don't know why this is. Have tried to burn movie anyway but iDVD app quits halfway thru. Today I tried just simply going to iDVD >file>onestep DVD from movie>select movie and inserting disc. This seems to be the simple solution I have been looking for to burn a movie without themes but iDVD still quit on me halfway thru burning just now. Is this a space problem? Disc problem? help...

OK F Shippey - Using this computer for anything other than email is pretty new to me. I have just recently began using imovie and idvd. I have burned one idvd and working on a second. While making the movie I was constantly having to delete old footage to make room for space. In other words I don't know much about space and usage. I know that in my new imovie project it says that i have 7.53 Gb available. I know i have a Lacie external with one DVD on it. So what do i need to know about space on a hard drive while using imovie? How do you monitor how much hard drive space you have while working on projects like this? Do I find this info in About This Mac? Sorry for so many dumb questions. Clearly I don't know what I am doing. Thanks for your reply.

  • Is there is a way to export the themes from iDVD to DVD Studio Pro?

OK...so here's what I'm trying to find out: is there is a way to export the themes from iDVD to DVD Studio Pro? Or can I build the project in DVDSTPRO and import it to iDVD to build and burn?
I've read several threads here and haven't come across my specific question. If I missed it, please copy me a link. Otherwise, I'd like to use the templates/themes in iDVD with my FCP project.
I was thinking about importing the project from FCP to iDVD. Then, I thought about the markers etc....
So, if anyone had an idea, tip or link, I'm all for it!
    Thanks!

    Importing iDVD Projects and Themes
DVD Studio Pro 4 can import projects from iDVD 3 and iDVD 4. You can import an iDVD theme by using the theme in a project within iDVD and importing the project into DVD Studio Pro. When creating the project within iDVD, you do not need to use the final assets or make a complete project.
Note: DVD Studio Pro will not import projects from iDVD 1, iDVD 2, and iDVD 5. In general, iDVD needs to be installed on the same system as DVD Studio Pro. An exception is if you import an iDVD 4 archive project.
To import an iDVD project or archived project into DVD Studio Pro:
1 Do one of the following:
    • Choose File > Open.
    • Press Command-O.
2 Locate and select the iDVD project or iDVD 4 archive project in the Open dialog, then click Open.
DVD Studio Pro imports the iDVD project.
    About the iDVD Project Import
When DVD Studio Pro imports an iDVD 3 or iDVD 4 project or iDVD 4 archive project, it has standard locations it looks for to find the assets and themes used in the project. This is especially important if the project uses custom themes.
The standard locations that DVD Studio Pro uses are (in this order):
    • iDVD project bundle: This is the file created when you save the project.
    • [user]/Library/iDVD/Favorites: This folder is located in your home folder.
    • [root]/Library/iDVD/Favorites: This folder is located at the root of your disk.
    • /Network/Library/iDVD/Favorites: This folder is on a network system specifically
configured by your system administrator for this purpose. (This is not the same as having a server networked into your computer.)
    • iDVD application bundle: This is the iDVD application file that contains the default theme elements.
Note: When you create an archive project in iDVD 4, you can choose to include the themes and encoded files. For the best portability, you should include both options. This results in a larger archive file, but ensures you can take the file to any DVD Studio Pro system and import it without missing assets. If you do not choose to include the themes and encoded files in the archive file, those assets must be available in one of the standard locations.
If your project will have automatically-created chapter index (scene selection) menus based on markers embedded in the video, it can be easier to create these within iDVD prior to importing the project into DVD Studio Pro. This ensures the chapter index menus use the selected theme’s background and include arrow buttons to navigate between the menus.
Important: To ensure all iDVD menu elements import correctly into DVD Studio Pro, you must navigate to each chapter index menu within iDVD before saving the project. This is also true for any menus you add to your iDVD project by clicking the Folder button.
    Issues With Importing iDVD Projects
There are some issues to be aware of when you import iDVD projects:
    • If you import an iDVD project with DVD-ROM content, DVD Studio Pro does not update the settings in the Disc Inspector’s General tab to reflect the DVD-ROM content. You must manually select the DVD-ROM layout and choose the folder to include.
    • When you create a slideshow in iDVD, you can add arrow buttons to each still to provide viewers with an additional method of jumping to the previous and next stills. These arrow buttons are not imported when you import an iDVD project into DVD Studio Pro. The viewer must use the Previous and Next buttons on the DVD player’s remote control to jump between stills.
    • The button highlights used in iDVD may look different when imported into DVD Studio Pro. In most cases, the text in the buttons is set to be included in the highlight. Additionally, buttons that use an underline in iDVD will not have an underline when imported into DVD Studio Pro.
    • When you import an iDVD project, you may find that the button that is highlighted by default on some menus changes. During the project import, DVD Studio Pro numbers the buttons on each menu and highlights button 1 by default. You can assign any button on a menu to be the default button in the Menu tab in the Menu Inspector.
    • If you import an iDVD project that contains a drop zone configured as a slideshow and has multiple slides assigned to it, DVD Studio Pro only shows the slideshow’s first slide in the drop zone.

I have been having trouble importing Themes into Final Cut Express and I am going to assume that I am missing something in order to do this. Can anyone give me assistance on how to do this or if it is even possible?

You can't import themes from iDVD or iMovie. You make be able to build a video with a theme in iMovie and export to to use in iMovie.

I would guess the answer is no, but you should ask in the iDVD discussion area.

  • Watercolor theme on idvd/order of slideshows

Working on 'watercolor' theme for idvd, have 4 slideshows on chapter page and want to
have them loop in a certain order but can't find info for moving them...any suggestions?

    Hi she356
Welcome to apple discussions. Technically there is no "Play All" check box within iDvd like there is within Toast for example. But here's a few ways to meet your stated objective. First make your slideshows w/in iDvd as shown below ...
Now go to Map View and drag the slideshow that you wish to start with and to loop to the first box and select the Loop function in iDvd. For example:
That one slideshow will start to play as soon as the dvd is inserted into the dvd player and it will continue to loop until you hit "Menu" and that's how you'd access the Menu for second slideshow / movie.
Now let's say you have multiple slide shows and you want them all to play one after the other and w/o returning to the main menu and also to loop. That's where QT Pro, iMovie or FCP comes in. Once you string them together as one QT file /movie then you simply drag and drop the whole thing to the very first box while in Map View and also select the loop function.
or you can make a duplicate full length movie of all slideshows as ONE movie and designate it as the third slideshow and while in Map View drag it to the first / top box; remembering to also select the loop function.
Hope this works for you but if not feel free to search this forum for other approaches that involve 3rd party apps that might provide you with even better results since they often specialize in slideshow presentations. The following iDvd discussion may shed some light on exactly which apps are available to do this. FotoMagico comes to mind (and is often recommended on this forum) and so does Toast for continuous play options. Btw, Toast now includes FotoMagico within their software.

  • Editing Themes in iDVD '08

Is there a way I can create my own themes for iDVD '08?
I have used a few of the premade themes and I would like to explore modifying them for some of the work I do.
This would be changes such as altering color/location of preview rotations/etc. Thanks for any clues ahead of time.

Sounds like work for Apple's DVDSP and Motion (for Graphics animation) or some of these may help:

Keep in mind you can modify many of these iDVD themes to your own liking as well (but there are more limitations within iDVD as opposed to DVDSP).

  • OLD THEMES in iDVD

Can anyone from Apple please help me. I am trying to install OLD THEMES in iDVD. I have downloaded the old themes and I am getting an error message. Then I tried Install from DVD and this did not work either.
Can you please help me to load the Old Themes into iDVD this is my first time on an imac

What is the answer to this question? The post indicated it has been answered, but I can't see a reply.

  • How to get Old Themes into iDVD 7.1.2?

I'm running iDVD 7.1.2 on an iMac running Mavericks 10.9.1.  When I open an iDVD project I have access to theme for iDVD 7 and iDVD 6.  When try to select an Old Theme a window opens inviting me to install additional themes by choosing Download Now.
However, when I choose OK to download now the App Store opens to the Update screen and tells me there are no updates available.  What gives?  How are the old themes to be installed?

Did you have all of the themes previously on the iMac?  Look in the Home/LIbrary/Applicatiion Support/iWeb folder or in the HD/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to see if all the themes are there.
Did your Mac or a previous Mac come with install disks and was iDVD preinstalled on it?  If so and you still have the disks you can use those disks  to do a custom install of iDVD's themes,  If you have trouble getting the disks to work you can always use  Pacifist to extract and install just the themes.
Otherwise you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Creating themes for idvd 6

Can some tell me how to create a custom theme for idvd. what I mean is, I want to create my own Menu screen without the use of the themes that are provided, kind of make my own. does anyone know if its possible and how you can do it? I have found themes you can buy on line so I know there has to be away to do it. Thanks in advance.

so is there any other programs out there that does the same thing as idvd but on a more advance level?
Yes. It's called Apple's Final Cut Sudio 2 / DVDSP .... might be easier to make your own custom themes within DVDSP, although there is a larger learning curve involved with this particular app (it also helps to have a working knowledge of Motion(included in Final Cut Studio 2) for creating motion graphics menus as well as Adobe PS). Or you can simply select from the many themes templates provided as a starting point w/in DVDSP.
You can do many of the same things within iDVD (to some extent) however button and text objects (and their associated links) are not as stable nor predictable as they are in apple's pro apps / DVDSP.... which IMO is one of the main reasons for having a DVD entry menu/s in the first place.

  • Music-themes of iDVD free to use?

May I use the music-themes of iDVD for a public institution? It would used for a non-commercial short-film. What kind of copyrights are the sounds?

    Yes you may.
“You may use the Apple and third party audio content (“Audio Content”) contained in or otherwise included with the Apple software, on a royalty-free basis, to create your own original soundtracks for your video and audio projects. You may broadcast and/or distribute your own soundtracks that were created using the Audio Content, however, individual samples, sound sets, or audio content may not be commercially or otherwise distributed on a standalone basis, nor may they be repackaged in whole or in part as audio samples, sound files, sound effects or music beds.”

  • Using themes from iDVD in DVD Studio Pro

I have both Final Cut Pro Studio and I have iLife '08. I really like some of the new themes in iDVD '08. Is there a way I can use these themes, or are some of them available for DVD Studio Pro? Does the newest version of Final Cut Studio Pro enable this? It would be a good reason for me to buy the upgrade.

You cannot open up iLife '08 iDVD projects any version of DVD SP. DVD SP does have some themes and you can try to get assets from iDVD projects to work with such as this to some degree

There are many reasons I can give you to get the new Studio (not sure which one you have) but I really enjoy the new one. Opening iDVD is not one of the reasons though
