There is a bright light... then nothing...

Hey all. I have a lovely 27" iMac i bought in March 2010. Today, I went to wake
it up and the screen flashed, then it went blank and wouldn't come back.
It will now not reboot, after resetting the PRAM, I now always get the startup tone,
sometimes after that I get a flash of the grey screen, but then, nothing... it sounds
like the drive runs a little, but it clearly doesn't boot up.
Things I've tried:
1) reset PRAM
2) boot in recovery mode
3) boot in safe mode
4) I took all the ram out and just cleaned the dust off, inserted various combinations
hoping it was bad ram, still nothing.
The Mac is running Mountain Lion, latest version. 8gigs of Ram.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like a hardware failure, run Apple Hardware Test in extended mode at least 2-3 times in succession. If error codes appear it's a confirmed hardware failure that needs repair at your local Apple Store or AASP. If the machine is still covered by AppleCare then the repair will be covered. If no errors appear then still take it in, AHT is not the most reliable test. The techs have better tools available to them, that you don't have access to. BTW don't bother to ask what the AHT error codes mean, Apple does not publish that information.

I can't restart my Macbook Pro after putting it to sleep. I now get a blinking light, then nothing. The computer will not start up, even after doing what is recommended in the mannual. Has anyone else had this problem? Were you able to solve it? How were you able to resolve it? Thanks for any help you can send my way. mt

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately I live a 5 hour drive to my closest Apple store, so making a "Genius" appointment is not possible at this time. I have tried re-seating my memory cards, I have also tried using the original memory cards that I replaced in favor of more memory. I got the 3 beeps and 5 second pause 3 beeps indicating that the RAM doesn not pass integrity check. Am I still at the "Genius" appointment? Thanks for your help.

• When I power up my 2008 Mac Pro I get the "welcome", chime, fan goes on, a light goes on on my Apple monitor and then nothing - black screen. Whats going on?

When I power up my 2008 Mac Pro I get the "welcome chime", fan comes on, a light comes on on my Apple moniter and then nothing - black screen. What,s going on?

what you describe as the "welcome chime" is the indicator that your Mac has passed the Power-On Self test, and if a suitable source of software can be found, booting is likely.
If the screen stays dark, the most likely explanation is a graphics card failure. But it could also be caused by a backlight failure in the LCD, so be sure you try shining a bright light at the screen to be check whether the picture is there, but just not illuminated.
Graphics card failure will end the boot-up process in some cases, and not have an impact in others. Two external indications you can use when your display is not working are: The Caps Lock key, which is under the control of Mac OS X, and the Control-Eject dialog box shown below. Note that the default is Shutdown, so a Mac that shuts down in response to Control-Eject followed by Return is working fine.

• Ipod shuffle 4th generation device not shown on itunes, not charging. Seeing red light when connecting to USB charger for a few seconds, then nothing. How to fix this?

My ipod shuffle 4th generation was working fine for a few months. My son then bit the USB charger. I bought a new USB charger, but the shuffle is not charging and not showing up under the devices in itunes. It also doesn't appear in my windows under my computer. Just to note. I also have a new ipod touch. I am able to charge that fine on the same computer using the USB charger. The device (Ipod touch) does show up in windows and in itunes. The shuffle doesn't show in either place.
I have tried to use the apple support page. I went through each step. I made all of my USB drives not shut down, I had my computer on all night to try and charge the shuffle. All I see is a red light that appears on the shuffle for a few seconds when I first connect the USB charger to the computer. Then, nothing. Since this was working a bit ago, I don't think that I have a defective shuffle. The USB charger is brand new, I just picked it up yesterday from the apple store. I have the short one, and the longer cable as well.
Any help that you might be able to give to me would be much appreciated. My daughter is missing listening to her music. Thanks!

Instead of "charger," you should call it the "USB cable" to avoid confusion. When started reading your post, I was thinking, how can your son break a USB power adapter (the "charger" that plugs into a wall socket) by biting it...
Since you got the product with the two USB cables at the Apple Store, you have the right replacement (some third-party replacements are for the 2nd gen shuffle and do not work with the 4th gen shuffle). Make sure you are completely inserting the plug into the headphones jack. The fit may be tighter than expected, since the connectors are new.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3572
If you tried both of those cables, it would be unlikely that you got two faulty cables in one package. If a new USB device has been added to the computer between the time it worked with the old cable and now, there could be a problem on the USB bus (such as not enough power or a device conflict).
As a test, you should shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices (including any hub), except for standard keyboard and mouse (if used). Do this to reset the shuffle

Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect the shuffle by itself to a direct USB port on the computer.

• IMac DV green light on start button lights for a second then nothing!

Hi All,
My iMac DVSE 400 will not start up. When I unplug and replug power wire on back of iMac while in it is plugged into the wall socket..nothing happens, When I simply unplug from the wall sockect, the light in the on-off button turns green for a second or two...then nothing. Can you help me to diagnose and repair. Thanks.
iMac DV SE 400, 1 GB RAM, 128GB HD Mac OS X (10.4.3) Hope to get help!

I would suggest a PRAM reset. Immediately after pressing the power button, hold down the following keys; commandoption+PR. Let it chime three time, then release the keys.
Hope it helps,
Rick

Hello Korawees,
I was researching the issue you are describing and had a recommendation. The device is very simple, so the software troubleshooting for it is pretty limitted so I think you shoud restore the iPod shuffle and re sync the content. That way, if it is a software issue, this will fix it. Here is the article named Restoring iPod shuffle to factory settings found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1481.
Before Starting
It is important to understand the difference between "update" and "restore." Update does not affect your settings or songs, it simply installs updated software that controls iPod shuffle. Restore erases the disk and restores iPod shuffle to its original factory condition with updated software. If you only need to update iPod shuffle, this should be done on the computer where music is normally synced. Updating on another computer will result in all songs being removed from iPod shuffle.
Warning: Because Restore erases all songs and files on iPod shuffle, make sure to back up any files you've saved on iPod shuffle. Your songs, podcasts, and audiobooks can be synced back to your iPod shuffle if the items are part of your iTunes library.
How to restore iPod shuffle
Ensure that you have an active Internet connection as new versions of iTunes and iPod Software may need to be downloaded to your computer.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if you do not already have it installed.
Open iTunes, and then connect iPod shuffle to your computer.
After a few moments, iPod shuffle will appear in the Devices section on the left side of the Tunes window.
Select iPod shuffle under Devices and you will see information about it appear in the main iTunes window under the Summary tab/button for iPod shuffle (3rd and 4th generation) or the Settings tab/button for iPod shuffle (1st or 2nd generation).
The Version section tells you whether iPod shuffle is up to date or needs a newer version of the software.
Click the Restore button. You will be presented with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download the latest iPod Software. The 4-possible restore options are:
Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available.
Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software currently on your computer.
Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores after downloading the latest iPod Software on your computer.
If you are using a Mac, a message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress indicator will appear on the computer screen indicating that the restore process has started. Do not disconnect iPod shuffle during the restore process.
After the restore process is complete, the iPod shuffle's status light will flash orange continuously. The iPod Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences as you did when you connected your iPod shuffle for the first time.
When you come to step 7, I recommend Restore Option 4.
Take care,
Sterling

• I have an iphone 4 and and it suddenly turns off i stilled had 70 percent to so i went home plugged it into the charger and let it sit there for about 30 mins still nothing then i put tried putting it in dfu mode but nothing please help

i have an iphone 4 and and it suddenly turns off i stilled had 70 percent to so i went home plugged it into the charger and let it sit there for about 30 mins still nothing then i put tried putting it in dfu mode but nothing please help

Connect iPhone to Wall Charger and Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone begins to start, this can take about 20 seconds of holding both buttons. If nothing, this means your iPhone has a hardware fault, most likely and hopefully battery.

• New iOS 7 not readable in bright light, why is there no contrast?

The new iOS 7 is terrible. The background screen is white and in certain apps, plus the phone dial pad and in Notes there is no color separation or contrast to read in bright light.

I just fixed this on my phone. If there is a moon symbol showing in the top right hand corner that means you have the "Do Not Disturb" setting on its a new feature with ios7. If you go to your settings you can find it right under the Control Center tab. Just click on it and flip the manual switch off. Hope this helps!:)

• Display looks like there are spotlights shining down from the top. Screen is light then dark then light, etc.

My display screen looks like it has spotlights at the top that are shining down. The screen is light then dark, then light then dark, etc. How do I fix this? Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!

hello, I have this problem too but the spotlights come from the bottom. This started about 2 weeks ago. I took my Macbook Pro (early 2008) to Apple just a couple days ago and they said that my hardware is working just fine. Im not under warranty anymore so I didnt opt to buy a new display. They showed me a quick fix to the problem, press CONTROL + SHIFT + the EJECT button on top right and the screen goes to sleep, press any key to wake up screen and the spotlights are gone. Of course this is not a long term fix but its something. Here is a link to this problem from Apple, http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1258 , they've had this problem since 2008. Hope this helps.

• After my latest update my music wont load on ipad i just get a blank grey screen and no music titles yet when i check usage it says music is there, ive tried unsync it then redoing and still nothing

after my latest update my music wont load on ipad i just get a blank grey screen and no music titles yet when i check usage it says music is there, ive tried unsync it then redoing and still nothing

Rebooting will not make you lose any content. Rebooting is when you hold the home button and the sleep button down at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
You can these suggestions. One might work for you.
Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.

• I updated Firefox and now it will not open at all. The hourglass shows that it's working but then nothing. I went to add/remove and removed mozilla and reinstalled it and still the same thing. It worked fine before I updated.

I updated Firefox and now it will not open at all. The hourglass shows that it's working but then nothing. I went to add/remove and removed mozilla and reinstalled it and still the same thing. It worked fine before I updated. Now I can't even remove the program at all. Why is this happening?

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
