  • Hi. Having trouble getting the superdrive on my daughters circa 2009 mac mini to eject discs.  Even the 'hold down mouse button on restart' trick isn't working now and there's a disc stuck in the drive. Anyone out there with a fix? Here's hoping :-)

It doesn't seem to matter whether it's a DVD or a CD it just won't eject :-(

Is there a very small pin hole, just inside the drive opening on the right? If true, you can very gently press the tip of a paperclip into this hole (with the machine on) to eject the disk.
With the mini off. Turn it upside down and thunk the bottom with your hand a couple of times. This may dislodge that stuck drive sufficiently to allow normal eject.
It may be possible to (again gently) pry up on an edge of that stuck disc with an old, unused credit card.
If you made it this far, better make an appointment with an Apple store to have the drive removed, disassembled, and reinstalled. If you go this route, might as well upgrade the memory too if it needs it.

  • My iMac keeps getting stuck on the pinwheel what should I do?

My iMac keeps getting stuck on the pinwheel and is running really slow. What should I do?

We need your model of iMac and the version of the Mac OS you have to provide useful help. There are four families of iMacs from 1998 to present, and what fixes one may not fix another.
Pleae do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu; you get something like this:
Tell us what it says for "Processor" and the version of the Mac OS ("!0.5.8" in the above example). Without that, we're running blind.
    Thanks

  • New 4s "could not activiate"  "There was a problem connecting to the server" What should I do.

Just received the new iPhone 4S. Going through setup but cannot get activated. One paragraph of error message says"Activatio still pending". The next one says There was a problem conecting to the server. Please try again later."
So what should I do? Wait and it will automatically activate (=pending?) or try again to set up.

You wait. THere isn't really anything you can do to speed up the process. Once it activates, they will notify you. It could take 2 hours ---- it could take 24 hours....we go through this every year when the new model comes out and the Apple and ATT servers can't handle the number of activations....
    Pack patience and wait.

  • I have a CD stuck in the drive.  Is there are quick fix or do I need to take it into an Apple store.  I have a MacBook Pro 15"

I have a disc stuck in the drive.  Is there a fix I can perform or do I need to bring my MacPro to the Apple store?
    Phil

    Here are some standard remedies.
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
Open Disk Utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

  • I have a dvd stuck in the drive and as I can not boot is there a way of removing the dvd ?

    Hi
I have a dvd stuck in the drive and as I can not boot is there a way of removing the dvd ?

Boot with the option key down.  You will see a window showing all the bootable systems.  Select the OSX boot and hit return.  Once you are booted into OSX, use the Startup Disk system preferences to change your default boot volume.

  • CD stuck in the drive, how to remove it?

I have a CD stuck in the drive, most likely by the up-lifting of the label. How can I eject this CD?

You failed to mention what kind of Mac you have...  there are two different kinds of DVD drives.
with a Mac Pro, the dvd drive has a tray, so you just manually open the drive door (a damp fingertip helps) and firmly push a straightened paper clip into the small hole below the tray on the right side. This forces the opening gears to turn, unseating the tray. Hook the edge of the tray and gently slide it out.
The laptop "slot loading" drives are more difficult.

  • Is there a way to securely erase the drive during a fresh install

I'm selling my iMac G5 and Powerbook G4 so I can afford a brand new Intel iMac (the 2.8GHz one). I have Leopard running on both these machines at the moment, but on the iMac G5, I want to restore it to factory settings using the original Tiger install discs (I've lost the ones for the laptop).
I would like to ensure that these computers don't have any personal data on them before they leave... is there a way to completely scrub the drives before performing a reinstall? My only other option at present is to reinstall, then use Disk Utility to securely erase all free space... but I can't remember if that option was available in Tiger.
Perhaps there's some even better way I can prepare these machines for a new user that I haven't thought of?

Ok, I found the best way to ensure that all your personal data is gone before you sell your Mac is as follows:
    1. Perform a reinstall of OS X (selecting erase and install)
    2. When install has completed, create a quick test account so you can log in
    3. Run Disk Utility and erase all free space to the required level (I chose 7 times overwrite)
    4. Perform a reinstall of OS X (selecting erase and install) and power the machine off afterwards (when you get the first setup screen.
My reasoning is that after the first fresh install, you only have OS X's files on the filesystem. Any personal data that hasn't been overwritten is in the free disk space. Disk Utility then clears that up and the second fresh install allows you to get the machine to the state you normally get a brand new Mac in (i.e. prompts you for initial setup information).

  • Opening my iMac - CD stuck in the drive

Hey, I'm in serious need of help, if anyone has a second. My sister stuck a CD in the drive of our intel iMac while she had honey on her hands, and it's stuck in the drive now. Would you believe she's 16? Haha.
But seriously, we need to crack the iMac open and manually remove the disc and clean the drive, and if anyone knows how this is done, advice would be very well appreciated. Thanks!
    Chris

Hi Chris and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
I second the motion to take the iMac in for service. It's not just the CD that could be the issue here, but the optical drive too.

  • A disc is stuck in the drive, how do I troubleshoot?

a disc is stuck in the drive, how do I troubleshoot?

    Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.

If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
