There is a question mark at the top of my folder

I have put an image onto the grey bit at the top of a folder and it is now a question mark. How do I get rid of this??

We're talking about the shortcuts you can add to the top of a Finder window, which occasionally get unlinked and turn into question marks. What are you talking about?

  • Why is there a question mark in the top right corner of finder window?

just noticed this today, what does it mean?

when i click on it it says " the item can not be found" what item?
    thanks for your help.

This just happened to me. Help.
There was a mounted disk image on the desktop. I used to command-drag these to the drive so that it would copy as a whole folder. I just did that in Mountain Lion. But a folder was nowhere to be found. I forgot about it and just ejected the disk image.
Now I see there is a question mark at the right of every Finder window. I can't seem to remove it.
EDIT: I googled for the answer and found it. It can be removed by first right-clicking to "Customize Toolbar". Then drag it off and poof..

  • Question marks across the top of new finder windows

    Hello,
When I open a new finder window everything looks and works fine but I'm seeing 3 large question marks in the top gray area of the new finder window.
When I click it I get a message that says "The Item Can't Be Found".
    What is this all about?
    Thanks

you can put a link to any item in the toolbar. just drag it there from finder. you can get rid of such a link by command+dragging it off the toolbar. that's all there is to it.

  • I updated to Yosemite and now I can't open my YNAB finance app. There is a question mark in the Dock where the App should be and when I hover over the question mark it does say YNAB but I can't open it.

I updated to Yosemite and now I can't open my YNAB finance app. There is a question mark in the Dock where the App should be and when I hover over the question mark it does say YNAB but I can't open it. When I double click on the question mark nothing happens. Has the link to YNAB been broken with the update? Has this happened to anyone else?

    Check the Application folder.
If it is not there, contact YNAB Finance for a OS X Yosemite compatible version of the application.
    Best.

  • Why do all of my windows (Finder, etc) have 3 stationary question marks at the top?

My folders have 3 stationery question marks running across the top of the page.  This is something new to me; does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

If you mean in the Finder's toolbar they are for toolbar items you had that are no longer on your drive or have been moved from their original locations. Hold down the COMMAND key and drag the item out of the toolbar.

  • I installed utorrent on my mac mini and when i restart there is a question mark on the dock

I have tried to install utorrent on my mac mini running mountain lion and each time it installs and runs fine until i restart the computer and it is no longer installed and a question mark is in its place on the dock. I am new to mac and do not know what I have to do to make sure the app remains installed after a restart.
As a bit of extra info, there is a folder on the desktop when I install the app at first and after restart that folder is no longer there as well. I am assuming this is relevent but being new to mac I am not sure what settings adjust this. Thanks for any assistance.

I figured out the problem but cannot erase this post so no more help is needed. I was pinning the open window of uTorrent as opposed to the app itself to the dock. Once I pinned the app it remained there after a restart.

  • I think I trashed my chess game that came installed on my computer. The Icon is on the dashboard but when I clicked on it there was a question mark within the icon and the game did not appear. How do I get it back without paying for it?

I think I accidently trashed my chess app. that came installed on my computer, how do I get it back, it isn't in my apps but on my dock and when I clicked on it a question mark showed up in the chess icon. Really dumb I know. But I am a novice at computers.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • There is a question mark through the iphoto app. what happened? how do i get my app to work again?

is there anyway to get my iphoto app goin without buying a new one? I didn't delete anything that would make his problem.

Is the iPhoto application in your applications folder? Launch it and right click on the iPhoto icon in teh dock and select keep in dock
If it is not then you (or someone) has deleted it - look in the trash - if it is there return it to the applications folder - if not reinstall from the disks that came with your computer -
reinstall iPhoto - go to your receipts folder ("Your hard drive" ==> library ==> receipts) and remove any iPhoto receipts and reinstall from the restore disks that came with your computer - do a custom install of bundled software only

  • Grey Question mark appeared at top left of all windowws

There has suddenly appeared a large grey question mark at the top left of all windows, for example, the main HD window and all the folder windows.
The finder text font is also different to how it was before.
I thought upgrading to Leopard might have fixed it but it is still there.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks everyone.

    Buckminster, welcome to Apple Discussions.
I note that you are using Leopard on a Powerbook G4. This forum is for G4 desktops. You are more likely to get an answer if you post in the Leopard 10.5 forum @ http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=235

  • Question mark over the Mail icon

What can I do if there is a question mark over the mail icon in dock... I can't open the Mail now. Thanks!

you can reinstall Mail using the leopard install DVD. insert the DVD and open it in finder. among other things you should see a folder called "optional installs". Open it and double-click on Optional Installs.mpkg. Follow the instructions. at the appropriate page you'll have to check the box for "Mail" on the list of software you want to install.
This will install Mail 3.0. To update it to the latest version of mail reinstall
    [10.5.3 combo update|http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1053comboupdate.html].

  • Question Mark flashing on top of folder

    sure hope someone reads this.
Every once in awhile i get a question mark flashing on top of a folder icon. not every time, just occassionaly. but tonight is different.
I restarted about 4 times before I could get it to come up so i could post on these forums.
I partitioned my HD into 2 parts and updated to Maverick. every since then i have problems starting up. Ive run permissions, disk first aid, etc and all seems to check out fine.
Ive gone to system preferences and selected the correct startup disk several times.
It is an early 2008 tower model. it has ran like a well oiled machine ever since i bought it...... even it goes out today. i can say ive definitely gotten my moneys worth from this machine.
also, the original ram went out after i updated and i replaced it. im running 6 GB memory. it seems to check out ok.
I have all my data on several external HDs. i only have applications loaded on the main computer.
sure hope someone can help me. i love this machine. its been my life saver.

Have you seen this support article and proceeded through all mentioned troubleshoots?
A flashing question mark or globe appears when you start ...
You may need to erase your normal startup disk and reinstall OS X

  • Question mark in the upper left corner of finder

    Hey,
I have just installed a bigger harddisk and more ram in my MacBook Pro (from last year).
Now there is a question mark in the upper left corner of finder. If I click on it, there is a message : the object doesn't exist, well my message is in danish, but I think this is a close translation. So what is happening?
    Regards Stig

Control-click it and choose to remove it, or command-click it and drag it out of the title bar.

    Hi, taro99.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would recommend downloading Keynote again via your past purchases.  Here are the steps that will walk you through downloading it again from the Mac App Store.

This is probably one of the files that is required by the template you are using.
These files are inside the iWeb app. Control click the iWeb app icon and select "Show package contents".
You need to dig down through the folders and files to find what you want...
    Contents/Resources/da.lproj/Templates/
If the file is missing you would need to re install the iWeb app...
