There is more to Grid View than you think

As is typical of new software versions, cool features are rarely fully discussed in press releases. Macworld has just posted and article about some [neat Grid View sorting|http://www.macworld.com/article/135566/2008/09/gridviewoptions.html] features that allow you to control how content is displayed in each grid view.
For instance in the Albums Grid View I selected to sort by the artist and then the year in ascending order then grouped the albums. Now when I switch to the Albums section of the Grid View I see album covers grouped by the artist and ordered within the group by release date.
Experiment and enjoy.

Thanks for the tip.

  • Strange Farm Noises? On my Mac? It's more likely than you think.

Okay, I'm going to need some help on this one. At spontaneous intervals, my Mac will produce random farm/animal noises, everything from a rooster that just sounded off now at exactly 4:00 PM, but doesn't happen at the same time every day, and sometimes not at all, all the way up to a wolf that howls at random times during the night, assuming the computer is on. I haven't heard any other animal noises so far, but I get the feeling these two random occurances are not the beginning. I have no extra software turned on to cause anything like this, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Who knows, maybe this is the first successful attempt at a virus for Mac OS X; just a program that runs in a hidden state and acts in a really annoying fashion.
    Help!

    David:
No virus, but it sounds like it might be haunted. You need to take it to an exorcist.
To get a more accurate reading it might be helpful to note exactly what happens at what intervals. In that way you can notice if there is any pattern, as I suspect there is. My first guess it that you have Announce the Time enabled in Apple Menu > System Preferences > Date and Time > Clock. However, unless custom voices were installed on your system, I don't see roosters or wolves there. Apart from that, I cannot think of any feasible technical explanation at the moment.
    Good luck.

  • I've heard there have been problems with the IPAD 2 and verizon 3 G have these been corrected? I'm about to buy an IPAD and there are more verizon versions available than AT

I'm about to purchase and IPAD 2 and the net seems full of comments about problems with the IPAD2 3 G and verizon service? Is this still an issue and if so
how bad? AT&T version is very hard to find, should I get the Verizon or wait?

You need to remember that these forums are like an emergency room.  All the gazillions of well people don't visit the ER.  Only sick people.
Same thing for this forum.  Some people had problems activating their iPad 2 with Verizon.  Most didn't and certainly wouldn't post here.
I would not use this as a consideration in which iPad to buy.  Rather I would consider whether I might be traveling outside the US with the iPad 2.  If you are, then you most certainly need the AT&T (GSM) version if you want to be able to access data without using WiFi.  The Verizon iPad has no SIM card, and the technology it uses is pretty much limited to the USA.

  • Applet OBJECT tag to install 1.6.0.22 - harder than you think!

    Hi there,
Using the OBJECT tag, I've placed an applet on a webpage. I need the user to download the JRE if it's not installed, so I added this attribute to my OBJECT tag and it seems to work.
    codebase="http://java.sun.com/update/1.6.0/jinstall-6-windows-i586.cab"
Unfortunately, right now this causes jre 1.6.0.18 to be installed, which consistently crashes once the install has completed, requiring the user to close the browser and return before viewing the applet (known issue I believe "http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do;jsessionid=5288ea4b825d095f0bf29977ada?bug_id=6925315").
I therefore want the more recent 1.6.0.22 version to be installed instead which won't crash, but I cannot figure out what to change the codebase attribute to accomplish this. It always seems to install 1.6.0.18! I've also tried the following without success:
    codebase="http://java.sun.com/update/1.6.0/jinstall-6-windows-i586.cab#Version=1,6,0,0"
    codebase="http://java.sun.com/update/1.6.0/jinstall-6-windows-i586.cab#Version=1,6,0,99"
    codebase="http://java.sun.com/update/1.6.0/jinstall-6-windows-i586.cab#Version=1,6,0,22"
Any tips would be immensly helpful!

  • Playing a playlist with multiple albums in Grid View in iTunes 8

    Hi All,
Here is a situation I came across, that was quite unexpected compared to the behaviour in iTunes 7.
Suppose I have a playlist with multiple artists/albums. I have this playlist in Grid View. I choose this playlist from the left side navigation tree and press the play button. This playlist is set to shuffle by songs. I expect it to play a song and jump to the next song. iTunes 8 would just keep playing the same songs in the first album listed in the Grid View and would not jump to any other.
    http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/4726/itunes20080910191124oh2.jpg
In this screenshot above, it will keep the songs in "The Very Best Of". If I press Ctrl+L (show now playing) then it would show only the songs in this album. This quite explains why it doesn't play other songs.
To explain a bit more on what's happening:
If I go to List View the song now playing does not have the Now Playing icon:
    http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1113/itunes20080910191500vf3.jpg
Notice it is playing "Opa Opa" but in the List View, it doesn't show it.
This is because in Grid View if you play a song from the playlist, it has its own "virtual playlist"
    http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/5269/itunes20080910191525wl1.png
Notice the now playing icon there.
    Why is this the case?
I hope you guys understood what I was trying to explain.

turingtest2: I had already done exactly what you described in the *"Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist"* section of your article. But what I hadn't done was the advice you gave as the last sentence in this section...*"In addition if you change the Compilation status of tracks they may be temporarily treated as tracks from an Unknown Album, again things should resolve themselves if you close and reopen iTunes".* As soon as I closed and restarted iTunes, the Unknown Album with five tracks disappeared and the tracks were again displayed with the correct album.
Your article is a great read, even for people who understand iTunes...there is a lot of helpful advice there to have bookmarked just in case any of the other problems you address are ever encountered. Thanks for taking the time to compile it and share it iTunes users.

  • Grid View artist names are entirely lower case

    Hi,
in my grid view the artist names have changed to entirely lowercase, i.e "adele", yet on all the tracks Artist & Volume Artist shows as "Adele" any idea why this suddenly changed? and more importantly how I can change it back?
I've tried resetting the Artists and Volume Artist tags but this hasn't helped.
    Thanks
    Mark.

  • Grid View: Meant to be squared

I just noticed this while looking into other’s issues with Grid View. Apparently, if you have album covers that are not square they will not be rendered as well in Grid View when sorted by artist; I would guess the issue would also occur if you browse by composer.
All of my cover art are scans from my CDs. The standard size of my cover art is 300x300 pixels for covers from standard jewel boxes and 300x264 for Digipak or slim jewel case releases that have more rectangular covers. Apparently, the images shown in the browse by artist (and composer) Grid views are in fixed “buttons” so any image that is not a square looks as if it is sitting (letterbox-style) atop a black button. Rendering in the browse by album mode is not affected in this way; the image just has a thin bevel and subtle shadow rendering applied, as opposed to the image being superimposed upon a graphic object.

    wow.
well i just found the solution to my problem. Well i found the cause, not a solution really. All this problem seems related to the fact that i had my albums sorted by Ratings. If i sort them back by artist, it's all good!!
This is really frustrating, come on, this isn't suppose to pass Q.A. tests.
Even more, if i sort them in descending order instead of ascending, it works, but i got my favorite albums on the bottom.. i guess it's a work around.
Now also.. why did they put ratings but no options to filter by ratings? and where are Smart Playlists? Go Itunes, be more Iphoto! :P

  • ITunes Grid View

I have recently updated to iTunes 8 (normal update through OS X) and am using the Grid view layout.
I have noticed that when it is in grid view and you hover over album art and press the "Play Album" button that it starts from where you finished from last time (e.g. half way through a song/album) and not the beginning of the whole album.
I have looked through preferences but have not found a way to turn this off, is there one and I have just missed it?

I haven't tried it but there is an Options tab in in Get Info window. One of the options is "Remember Position" for an album or "Remember Playback Position" for a single cut. Perhaps this is set and you can uncheck it?

  • More songs on computer than ipod

I just synched my ipod classic with itunes, and although the new songs came over, there are more on my computer than on my ipod. Everything I have done so far is from my personal CD library, all legal. I have 5077 songs on the ipod but 5108 in itunes on the computer.
How can I determine what is missing on the ipod?

    Hey there,
Have you made sure all the songs are checked in iTunes? To make sure they are, press Ctrl and then click on one of the boxes next to the songs. This might and probably remove them all, so just repeat the process to have them all checked.
After that, resync your iPod to iTunes. While it it syncing make sure to check if any errors coming up about certain songs not being able to copy over. If there are more than one, it will provide the entire list. Just click the plus mark in the bottom corner of the dialog box that came up. Hope this helps. Let me know.

  • How can I compare two collections at the same time? (View two grid views)

I have two collections containing some of the same images. (My Nikon D70 did not put an end-of-file on some images. I recovered them into a different collection.) Now I want to display both collections side-by-side in grid view. I will select those images in the "recovered" collection that correspond to the bad images in the "main" collection, add the ratings etc, and move just these to another collection.
It is extremely frustrating to have to bounce back and forth between collections, remembering each image one by one and selecting it in the "recovered" collection. (The image names are not preserved in the "recovered" collection -- I have to go by what the image looks like.)
LightRoom allows me to compare photos in the compare view. I want to compare collections in two grid views.

    CaptureTheLight,
you have ran into a situation when you have to compare two sets of images and now you're wondering how come Lightroom doesn't have such "obviously necessary" functionality? But you have to admit it, this is not such a common situation in a photographer's workflow recovers broken files and tries to compare them against themselves. I think it's a pretty specific feature you need. Still, Lightroom has enough powerful tools for editing and sorting images.
    For example...
You could just put them all - "main" and "recovered" - into a single collection or into the Quick Collection. Label the entire "recovered" collection with, say, red and sort by capture time. Now you'll have everything side by side, ordered chronologically. The "recovered" images will stay next to the "main" images since their capture time will be the same, and they will also stand out since they have the red label.
Make the thumbnails bigger and set up the grid view so it tints the thumbnail cell are tinted with the label color. Now, you can go quickly through them visually checking labeled vs unlabeled.

  • Are Intel based Macs more prone to Viruses than PPC based Macs?

I do not now, nor have I ever run A-V software. Nor have I ever had an issue with any kind of viruses, malware, spyware etc. However, I read an article in our local newspaper recently that even Macs, particularly Intel based Macs, are vulnerable to viruses. So, as a newcomer to the world of Intel Macs, the question suddenly takes on new significance and urgency. I do plan to run Windows on my MBP (as soon as I get the computer and set it up), and will likely use an emulator like VirtualBox. I have run VPC on my Pismo for years, and viruses have never been an issue, albeit I used Windows only for short periods at a time. So, is this a legitimate concern? What specific measures do I need to take, if it is, indeed, a concern?

As TD states, your Windows installation running as a virtual machine is as vulnerable as any Windows PC. If you won't be accessing email, and limit your web browsing, you'll be somewhat safer - but, I'd definitely recommend running AV software even so. There is quite a bit of malware/spyware that will install itself upon visiting some websites, and it can be easier than you think to run into one of those sites (for example, accidentally leaving out a 'p' when typing apple.com into a browser address bar redirects you to another site - 2sale.com; that one seems innocuous, but that's not always the case).
Note that VMware comes with a free 12-month subscription to McAfee VirusScan® Plus, so for the time being there's no need to purchase additional AV software, just make sure you keep McAfee running and up to date.
On the up side, if your virtual machine does become infected, the problems will remain confined to the virtual machine. Should you need to, you can roll back to a previous snapshot, or, if you set it up as a virtual disk virtual machine (i.e. VWware is not accessing a Boot Camp partition, but rather the virtual machine is stored as a file in the Mac OS), then the virtual machine is backed up along with your other files as part of your routine backup strategy.

  • HT4436 Can there be more than on iCloud account on a computer?  I have an iCloud account with my iPhone and would like to view my photo stream on my husbands mac.  I do not have a mac but an older PC

Can there be more than one icloud account on a computer?  I have an icloud account with my iphone but would like to view my photo stream on my husbands mac.  I do not have a mac but an older PC. thanks

    Welcome to the Apple community.
The simple answer is yes you can. On a single user computer, the user can have secondary iCloud accounts, which they can add through the system preferences > mail, contacts and calendars. The only drawback here is that only the primary iCloud account can use photo stream. This can be worked around by having a second user account on the Mac. Each user account could then have a different primary iCloud account, one for you and one for him, your account could then receive your photo stream pictures.
Are you also aware that you can have iCloud on your PC and download your photos stream pictures to it.

    Illaas,
I tried the manual method.  I was able to set the music/video to manual and then restarted the entire system.  After restart, I re-attached the ipod touch to the computer.  The sync automatically ran for everything that wasn't set to manual and it completed without a problem.  I then reset the music/video to automatically sync and restarted the entire coputer/ipod set again.  This time when I re-attached the ipod, EVERYTHING synced and there were no problems reported.  I've never had to do this before, but I will keep it in mind if something like this happens again.  Thank you for pointing me to the manual sync.
