If your computer came with DVDs:
1. Insert the OS X DVD and press C key when your Mac starts.
2. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility and erase the drive.
3. Install OS X again. Then, open  > Software Update and install the most recent version. Finally, open App Store > Purchases and download OS X Mountain Lion
The OP is on 10.8, there are no discs, but there should be a recovery partition.

It never used to do that before until now.  How can I get it to just start up to the regular Macintosh HD again without clicking on the HD at startup?

  • Startup Pop up with macintosh HD and Recovery 10.9

on the odd occasion for absolutely no reason when I start my macbook pro running the latest mavericks OS version, the first screen that comes up when starting up from power off shows two options to choose either "Macintosh HD" or "Recovery 10.9" with "select network" below them, I dont understand why it keeps coming up every once in a while or what it even does although I'll usually select macintosh hd and everything will be ok but I'd just like to know whats up if anyone had any comments. Thanks in Advance

    Hi tandh318,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below may be able to help you with this.  Once you choose the Macintosh HD as your startup volume, the pop up option should not re-appear.

  • Why does Startup Manager only show Recovery HD and not my other drives like Macintosh HD and my USB drive?

I'm not really sure what happened to my Mac but when I start it, it only shows Recovery HD and nothing else.  I tried re-installing Mountain Lion through my Apple ID but it states that I have not purchased it and will not let me proceed.  I have bought a usb drive that has Mountain Lion, since I cannot purchase it in the apple store, on it to install it from there but I cannot boot into my USB because it only shows "Recovery HD" in Startup Manager.  I would really appreciate some input from you all, thank you for your time in advance.

Either your drive is failing or has been corrupted. Please try the following. You cannot do the following unless you have purchased Lion or later. From your post that's not clear. Without knowing your exact model I cannot tell you what to do.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If your computer is a 2010 or earlier model, then you should be able to do the following:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • At startup: choose Macintosh HD or Recovery HD, choose network

I turned on my computer this morning and got a grey screen with two icons: Macintosh HD and Recovery HD. There was a drop-down box underneath asking me to choose my network. When I selected my network, another screen appeared with the network name and a field for the network password. I set up this network 10 months ago and do not remember the password.
Thankfully, one of my neighbours has an unsecured network, so I chose that one and my computer booted up as usual.
I wanted to know if this was a one-time crazy occurance so I shut down and started my computer again. The same thing happened again. And no, I did not remember to check my network password in Keychain.
I again chose the unsecured network and the computer booted up as usual.
Can anyone suggest why this is happening? I shut down the way I usually do last night and this has never happened before. The only things different today are:
    1. My remote fell down last night and stopped working so I turned on the TV manually this morning; and
    2. My trackpad fell out of my hand and there's a diagonal crack through the centre so I'm using a !#&?#!& mouse (I'm waiting patiently for the 3rd bout of misfortune to befall me)
I can't, however, imagine either of these things affecting the booting up of my mini.
Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My PRAM reset did not go as stated.
I depressed Cmd Option P R, kept pressing those keys, turned on the computer. Then got a screen with 4 options:
    1. Restore from a Time Machine backup
    2. Restore from installation DVD?
    3. Get help online
    4. I don't remember
I shut down and tried again, and got the same screen with 4 options again. I tried the PRAM reset a third time and the computer booted as usual.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Vista DVD and Recovery CD's

My father (aged in his 70's) has just purchased a Lenovo 3000 series desktop.  It seems a good machine but it was supplied with no Vista DVD.  I tried to create a Recovery disc for him, but when you follow the customer care help it tells you to go to a particular menu screen and select the Create Rescue & Recovery Disc option, however this menu option is not there and there is nothing that sounds like it will do this task in any of the sub-menu's.  So, the first questions is how do we create a recovery disc for the computer?
Secondly, I'm concerned about the absence of a Vista DVD.  What if, for example, his hard drive dies after the computer is out of warranty and he has to buy a new one?  How does he install his licensed copy of Vista on the replacement hard drive if he doesn't have the DVD?  I don't understand how you can purchase a license and not receive a copy of the software that goes with it.

There is no LenovoCare menu but there is a LenovoCare Tools option in the Welcome Centre.  Under that menu there is no option for "Create Recovery Media".  Under LenovoCare Tools there is a Data Protection and Recovery option, and under that there is a Rescue and Recovery option.  However even within the Rescue and Recovery option I can't find any option to create recovery media.  It has 3 sub-menus:  "Back up your system", "Restore your system", and "Manage settings".  None of these has any sub option to create recovery media.
I have all the screenshots but I cannot figure out how to display them here.
My other concern is that the PC was supplied without a Windows Vista disk.  I cannot see how to create a Windows Vista CD/DVD from the system, so my dad has a licensed copy of loaded but no actual copy of the installation disk.  How do we do this?  If the hard drive fails after the warranty period, how would my dad install Vista on his new HDD?

  • Rescue and Recovery: Backup does not finish.

I very recently updated my Rescue and Recovery, now it runs version 4.21.12.0. When I do a backup, it does it just fine, but: After a message that the backup was done successfully, a message comes with a rotating hourglass, saying: "Finalizing backup, please wait..." This message stays forever and only goes away when I kill "Rescue and Recovery" with Windows' Task Manager. This did not happen with the previous version of Rescue and Recovery.
    a)  Does killing the Rescue and Recovery program at this point affect the actual backup files in a negative way? Or are they just fine, this being just a "cosmetic" problem"?
    b) Is this my problem somehow, or a programming bug of Rescue and Recovery that should disappear with the next release?
    Thank you for your help,
    Wolfgang

    hi there,
I have the same question as well. Just like you, I went to the task Manager, it states 'rescue and recovery running', then I did a right click, and go to its proces, I found out that the corresponding file "MsgBox.exe" have 00 value under CPU; and constant 6,496k under physical mem usage for hours, so I assumed that it will bea message box bug and shouldn't affect the backup dat. But again, I am not 100% sure. Guess i might wait for the answer as well.

  • Why did I get a screen asking me to choose Macintosh HD or Recovery HD?

When I turned my Macbook Pro on, there was a grey screen asking me to choose between Macintosh HD or Recovery HD. Above both options was a picture of a harddrive. I chose recovery incase it had lost any of my files, however it took me to a set up page, asking me to choose a language. At this point I turned it off using the keyboard button. When I turned it on again it came up with the usual login screen. I haven't lost anything, does anyone know why this happened? The last time I used it was a few days ago just to watch online TV. I have never downloaded anything except Apps.
    Thanks.

Go to the start up disk preference pane and make sure your mac's hdd is selected as the start up drive.

  • How to restore backed up files after I used Rescue and Recovery

    Hi there lenovo community,
so I'm struggling to find a solution on how to open these files right here:
    Link to image
First of all, the program I used to back up my hard drive was the Rescue and Recovery that my lenovo desktop came with. I used an external hard drive (WD My Passport, specifically) to back up my old hard drive. The problem that I'm facing right now is how I can open these files, they seem to be not working with any of the option programs the "open with" thingy offers me. If anyone knows  an easy solution for this please please respond to me immediately.. I would really really appreciate it.  I have important documents there.
    Thanks,
    Enrico

  • Failed to update ThinkVantage Rescure and Recovery due to a missing file "spmtr.exe"

Today I tried to update my ThinkVantage System, but the laptop was accidently restarted when ThinkVantage Rescure and Recovery was being updated. After the laptop was restarted, I ran the update program again and the ThinkVantage Rescure and Recovery couldn't be updated when the progress went to 91%. The following error was displayed on the screen:
"Windows cannot find 'C:\Users\hooklee\AppData\Local\Temp\{7E4C16BB-8F76-4940-8505-98E93C00B...\spmtr.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."
I restarted my laptop and re-executed the update program several times, but the same problem alwasy occured. Probably due to the failure of ThinkVantage Rescure and Recovery, now my ThinkVantage Productivity Center cannot run, either.
I looked into the directory "C:\Users\hooklee\AppData\Local\Temp" and noticed that there was no such a sub-directory at all. I searched the Internet on google with the keyword "spmtr.exe", but only two Chinese pages about the same problem (without solution) were found.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem or provide some clues about a possible solution? Thanks in advance for your help.
