There is no sound on my IMac-also no start up chime sound

Suddenly, the sound is gone on my IMac. I don't get a start up chime sound, either.  I recently installed software updates and don't know if this has anything to do with it. (OS X  version 10.6.8).  I will install Snow Leopard soon but want to resolve this first.
Anyone have any suggestions?  I'vd done the obvious- checked to make sure the mute wasn't on, loooked at sound settings, etc.
Recently the fan was kicking on high.  I don't know if this is a sign of an impending crash.

Is there something plugged into the iMac's audio output port? If so unplug it, restart the iMac and then plug it back in.
If not, reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Wait fifteen seconds.
4. Attach the computer's power cord.
5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
and reset the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
Then re-check for sound output.

    Hey Sheryl et al,
In the 1st gen and ALS G5 iMacs the first thing to check out is the capacitors on the logic board. If those look good and I mean absolutely pristine, then open up the power supply and check the ones in there.
Note: The diagnostic LEDs I consider to be a general indicator and not infallible.
The iSights are much more difficult to work on since opening them is much more problematic. The ones with the ATI X600 GPU chip have a high failure record due to that chip.
Also the iSight's power supply is another failure point.
As Richard notes a new power supply will run just over $100.
However a logic board swap will run $350 - $400 depending on model at DT&T services in CA.
Also Apple could/should theoretically do what's referred to as a "depot repair" on these machines for a flat $350. It would depend (as always) on the Apple Tech/service person you're dealing with.
A final note, I repair and donate these to deserving not for profits.
Harry Porterfield did a piece on me a few years ago.

  • 17" 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo iMac not making start up chime

Hey. I couldn't find an appropriate thread for this in the software issues board (since it seemed more like a software problem), so I came here. Anyway, my iMac no longer makes the startup chime. This isn't really a problem, but I do miss the startup chime. Thanks.

It might be that the initial system volume level is low or off.. that has happened to my Mac once or twice... lets hope it is.

Startup chimes (or lack thereof) in conjunction with other symptoms may be a precursor to some issues. Just so you can look over it.

    Hello Mogulman46,
So what that means is when you have Do Not Disturb turned on, you may have an alert depending on the setting and how you are using your iPhone. So if it is set to Always, then that means that no matter what, your iPhone will not be notified. If it set to Only while the iPhone is locked, then that means that you will not get notification when your iPhone is locked but you will get notifications if your iPhone is being used. Also keep in mind the settings All Calls From can be set to certain contacts like Favorites, Everyone or no one. If you are using Do Not Disturb and you do not need it, then turn it off.
Use Do Not Disturb on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • There is no sound when mirroring to my AppleTV from my iMac.

I have a brand new AppleTV that purchased less than a week ago and fully updated the software along with a late 2013 iMac running Yosemite (installed a couple of days ago).  Whenever I mirror from the iMac to the AppleTv there is no sound.
I don’t have any problems mirroring from either my iPad or iPhone the problem is only happening with my iMac.

    Hey thorin01,
Thanks for the question. Let’s check to see if your sound output is set to your AirPlay device:

  • As there is no sound only picture when connecting my ipad, do I need to also use the audio cable from Apple TV to an older Philips TV?

I have just bought a black Apple TV and it works fine when connecting my iPad to a modern TV.  However on an older Philips TV, there is no sound coming through.  Do I need to use an audio cable from the optical digital audio port in addition to the HDMI cable?  The TV's HDMI does not appear to support sound.

Thanks.  However no luck with this TV so far.  I've purchased a converter to give a digital audio signal from the optical digital audio output port.  The TV has an input audio digital port, but I've had no success in getting sound so far.
Is there any setting in the Apple TV menu that may affect the signal.  I've tried the setting for 16 bit signal, without any success.
Perhaps this Philips TV may just not be compatible with the new black Apple TV.  I have talked at some length with Philips support desk, but they've offered nothing new.

im currently useing my Mac mini as a portable computer, I take it to the university and use the iMacs there as a monitor but before I can do that I have to log in to my Mac mini first which means doing it blind

    How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.
    How do I exit TDM?
To leave TDM, press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac that is in TDM. You can also exit TDM if you shutdown or sleep either computer or detach the cable.
Can I use a third-party keyboard or older Apple keyboard to enable TDM?
Some older Apple keyboards and keyboards not made by Apple may not allow Command-F2 to toggle display modes. You should use an aluminum wired or wireless Apple keyboard to toggle TDM on and

    Hey there,
I know this post is very old but maybe it can help someone else at some stage.
This is my very first post on Mac Support so I hope it helps in some way
So I had a similar issue with my panasonic LCD HD TV.
I have an early 2007 MBP with a DVI output, not a HDMI. I use a DVI to HDMI cable to connect the two devices.
I understand that the DVI output from the MBP does not include audio, just video.. Is that also the case with HDMI I'm not 100%. To carry the audio I used the 3.5mm headphone jack to the older 'analog' red white yellow connections. I think it was red yellow or red white.. anyway, easy find what the video colour is.
I understand that you might not have used the 3.5mm jack, however, what I did to fix it might still help you.
Firstly, check your HDMI cable as I hear that some don't carry audio...
After that, check your TV settings on HDMI 1 and be sure it is set to 'digital input'.
I had to change my audio input to analog as I used the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Until I did that I had zero audio... Maybe your TV is on analog audio input by default.
"15" Macbook Pro, 2.33Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram, 750GB HDD" < (unsure why people add this info but here it is anyway).. I have a Macintosh product, I swear !

  • There's no sound on my MacBook

I have the original white body macbook. There's no sound when my laptop starts up and no sound period. There's also a red light in the headphone jack. When I try and adjust the volume, there is a "not allowed" symbol. Help please?

If you have headphones, plug and unplug them quickly. If it doesn't work, reset the PRAM > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Finally, open System Preferences > Sound > Output, and choose Internal Speakers

  • Has anyone else noticed since the last update to mountain lion, if you pit it to sleep, when it wakes there is no sound. you have to reboot to get sound?

I have found, in the past few days, since the latest update to Mountain Lion, if the Mac is put to sleep, there is no sound available when it wakes. I have to re-start to get sound back. Is this general??

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.
