There was an error in joining the airport network networkname

I am trying to get my daughters iBook (high school provded) connected to my wireless WRT54G. I have cloned my MAC address. My setting at 192.168.1.1 are;
Mixed
Channel 11-2.4
SSID is Enabled
Security setings are;
WEP
Default key is 1
128 bit
Passphase - letters
Key 1 is: 26 Alphanumeric
When I click on the ibook;
airport
network name
key #
I receive a message that says: "There was an error in joining the airpor network networkname"
I am trying to figure out if it the schools settings or an operator error?

hi... first off make sure that you are entering valid network key... if you are entering valid key in...try setting up $ sign before the network key and try connecting to the network...

  • "error in joining the AirPort network"

I have two iMac's. One is from college in 2002 (OS 10.4.10) and one is the newer 2007 (OS 10.5.5). Both were using AirPort Extreme. Since then I upgraded to Time Capsule and changed the computers to join the new network. Recently, the older computer stopped finding the network. I try to manually find the network but I receive an error "There was an error in joining the AirPort network '...'".
The newer computer hasn't had any issues. I assumed the newer one was closer to the AirPort so it had better signal. I then moved the older computer into the same room next to the AirPort but still receive the same error message.
I'm hoping the AirPort card hasn't gone bad. Any suggestions or advice??! How can I tell what the issue really is?

Hmmm, mystery. Although the Time Capsule is 802.11n it is backwards compatible to all previous versions. BDAqua suggests that the Airport card may be at fault. Do you still have the old wifi router/modem that you can plug in to see if you can still pick up that signal? No need to get it online, you just want the wifi signal.
The only other thing that I can suggest (if you haven't already tried it) is that you delete the connection in System Preferences>Network, restart and re-establish the connection. In other words, make it like it is a new computer that you are setting up again, network wise, from scratch.
Luck isn't helping here, is it? Er, have fun...

p.s. I'm out of ideas here if anyone else wants to chime in

  • "there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the device"

I get this error when trying to have my Airport (for wireless printer sharing) join my current O2 Broadband wireless network:
*AirPort Utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device after restarting.*
*The settings for this Apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again.*
Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

This has been a total joke...Same problems as many here and zero response from Apple! I've had an AX for 3 years or so and it has worked fine, that is until it dropped its connection 2 days ago. I went to reset and the utility prompted me to do some updates...then magically it all went down the tubes!
*"The settings for this Apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again."*...look familiar? Well, I tried everything including the many possible fixes listed here at the discussions...and of coarse NOTHING. I decided that maybe it had just out-lived itself and bought a brand new AX yesterday...funny SAME PROBLEM. Now all the tinkering is affecting my network. I returned the new AX today, and surprise the people at the Apple Store had never heard of the issues, let alone have idea of what to do next! VERY MAD!
Any new solutions would be great! THX.

  • There was an error connecting to the ATT network

I am trying to get help figuring out why when I try to connect on a wireless ATT modem I get an error message saying, "There was an error connecting to the network ATT5216." ATT could not help solve the problem. Anybody got any answers?

It didn't work. I typed in 17.149.160.49 in the browser bar and I got the message "You are not connected to the Internet. Safari can't open the page http://www.apple.com/stratpage because your computer isn't connected to the Internet. The AirPort is connected to the wireless network though. When i go to System Preferences>Network>AirPort and try and detect DHCP settings automatically by clicking on "renew DHCP lease" nothing happens. So I set all the paramemters manually using an AirPort address of 192.168.1.164 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and router address of 192.168.1.254. This hasn't solved the problem either. Do you think upgrading to 10.5 would help? I'm not so sure it would.

  • Cant connect to my wireless router, THere was an error in joining the airpo

    Hi,
For a while now, my powerbook has not been able to connect to my wifi network. I have been using Ethernet to connect. The router is a linksys 802.11n router. It is a new router, I have mac address filtering on and my PBs mac listed in the router, I have wpa with TKIP and AES encryption on. I'm not even asked for the pass code. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Josh

nm, now i got it. I guess the pass code was way too long or something for the PB. My Wii was able to connect with the old one though.
    Thanks

  • There was an error joining the Airport network

Re: error joining the Airport Network
My wife and I bought two new Macbooks at Best Buy on December 28, 2006. On the first day, I set them both up to work with our 2WIRE wireless router, and they both worked flawlessly.
However, on January 27, 2007, my wife started her MacBook, tried to select the wireless router in the Airport drop down menu (like she always has done before with no problem), and received the following error message:
"There was an error joining the Airport network "2WIRE229"
After several unsuccessful attempts to fix this problem by restarting and reconnecting, I did some research on the internet and came across the following discussions from other people who have experienced exactly the same problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3815739

I am having the same problem. I have an access point in my living room and a homework desk in my bedroom. My desk is maybe thirty feet from the access point through one wall. The desk does sit in front of a window. When I try to use my PowerBook at my homework desk I can, intermittently, pick up three access points: mine and two others. The two others are on the same channel as each other, but that should not be interfering with my access point and certainly shouldn't be causing it to disappear from the list all together.
Hoping that my signal just wasn't reaching well enough (the antenna on the AP was not very prominent) I bought a 6dBi antenna for it. My PowerBook has always worked in the living room and certainly works there now. I do get a much stronger signal in my bedroom but I still can't use the laptop on my homework desk.
What doesn't make any sense in all of this is that the wall in my room with the window is the same wall in the living room where there is a large sliding glass door. So, if the interfering signal is coming from outside it should be affecting the living room as well. I am at my wits end on this one.

  • There was an error joining the airport network "2WIRE532"

I just got my mac back from getting fixed for harddrive problems and now I'm trying to connect to the internet. Before I'd have some problems with losing connectivity but I always could connect. Now as I'm trying to connect to my wireless access point under the list of airport networks, it literally, right after I type in the WEP password, gives me the error message There was an error joining the airport network "2WIRE532". It looks like it doesn't even try to connect as fast as it does it. I need to know what's happening, I really want this mac mini networked to my network on my windows xp os computer.

I'm having the same problem. The only thing that was different was that we installed a new update from Apple for Quicktime.... then the next day it kept asking for a password (it didn't before) and then when it was entered, it gave me the same error message just a different network name.

  • There was an error joining the Airport network with WEP or WPA

I use a wireless adsl modem router (Philips). I can only connect via wireless to this router without encryption.
As soon as I use WEP or WPA encryption, I get the error message "There was an error joining the Airport network".
    Thank you for any suggestion.

Do not overlook the possibility that the router itself may be incompatible or may require a firmware update to work properly. You should configure the router to use WPA2, preferably, as this is the most compatible form of encryption with Airports.

  • There was an error joining the Airport network "NameOfTheNetwork"

    Hi there
I am French in London for an internship. I took a flat to share with an other girl. My father advised me to take a Mac for my specific utilisation (internet, music, movies...) and Macs are so cool exept for internet in my case. It doesn't work at all. The network of my landlord is hidden. So, I go in "other", I type manually the network name and the WEP password... Always the same message : There was an error joining the Airport network "NameOfTheNetwork". I tried several times with always the unlucky result.
My landlord said that there wasn't this kind of problem with her other flatmates before me...
I am pratically sure that the problem doesn't comme from my Mac because I reached to join an unprotected other network which appear sometimes (but the signal is not enought strong).
Is there an incompatibility between my Mac and the setup Network? And what do I have to to do to fix it?
I visited a lot of forums but :
1-I didn't find any topics on my specific problem
2-There explanations (when the topic is closed to my issue) are not clear and seem not to correspond to my issue.
Is there someone who can help me please? I really need internet!!!!!
    Emma

This confirms it is a WEP issue.
You will need to find the HEX key.
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

I checked for the IP address, and I'm not pulling one
    up.
That's the problem. Even with no base stations available you should eventually within a few minutes get a self-assigned IP of 169.x.x.x!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106659
Maybe you could manually configure an IP but that doesn't answer what's wrong. How about a simple test - create a new Location in Network System Preferences and see if that helps. If it doesn't then maybe a re-install of Airport or System software would help. If the Airport shows up as an available network port then the card is probably OK.

Why can't I connect to WiFi when asked for a password
Judging from what you wrote, because there is something wrong with the settings or the password or passphrase. Make sure all devices use the same type of encryption, and make sure you enter the correct password. WRT to this, read

How do I get rid of the error message "There was an error connecting to the server “Office AirPort Extreme” ?  This message shows up 3 times when I boot my iMac.

  • There was an error connecting to the network, try again!

    I bought a new Computer (Mac Mini) with Snow Leopard installed; On joining the network(WEP128Bit) airport extremebasestation and airportexpress with WDS-mode) suddenly the basestation didnt offer WEP 128bit any more. I cant remember precisely but i think ist got something to do with the firmwareupdate of the AEBS or that i gave up WDS and changed to „extend a wireles network“ , well it only offered „WEP transitory“ which did not work properly for some reason;
So i changed to WPA/WPA2 option and extending my network with the airport express.
This worked fine; two computers with leopard, the new one with Snow leopard and a windows Laptop as well as two Mobilephones could easily join the network.
BUT: My old Imac G4 with Tiger (10.4.11) could not join so easy.. (I changed the settings to WPA of course) The symptom was that on the right upper corner of the screen a message appeared saying: „there was an error connecting to the network, try again!“ and when i hit the „try again“ button up to 20 times then sometimes it suddenly succeeded to join.
I was just about to look after the wirelesscard but tried before one thing: I changed my network channel on the AEBS from „automatic“ to Channel 11.
From this time on i worked like a charm. I dont know why only the Imac G4 needed channel 11, but this solved my problem.

Here is the list of DHCP Clients:

I am not sure what 192.168.1.193 is ??? The 16 port Asante switch??
Anyone know if there is a way to (easily) add "Client ID" names in XP? I went though my Macs and added names to help ID them in the router, but can't see where to add names in XP?

(posting that does not compromise my security??)
I think I need to figure out how to get the HP 4050 to renew its IP address? Then the router should assign an address to it.....I would like it to use the same address it has now so I don't have to recofigure addresses on the computers to print to it......hummm

Just tried turning off the HP 4050 and unplugging it from the wall. Then plugging it (power) back in and turning it on, trying to get it to renew its IP address with the AirPort Extreme router.....nothing. Still does not show up in my list of DHCP Clients.
Tried Restarting the router.....now I see no clients at all in my list of DHCP Client list..... grrrrrr
Can anyone tell me why AirPort Extreme is not seeing the HP 4050 as a DHCP client?

  • Error joining the AirPort Network - revisited

I just got my iBook back from the shop and am trying to reestablish the link with my Airport Express. I've reset the unit, gone through numerous hoops.
The AirPort Express currently has a green light, and my router shows it's connected. Yet, when I try to connect, or try to reconfigure, I get the message "There was an error joining the AirPort network "Apple Network xxxxxx""
I have no idea what firmware is on the unit, nor do I have the means to update the firmware if needed (as I cannot get a connection to it).
Yes, I have a good internet connection. I'm posting this on an older iBook ... which is not AirPort ready.
    Thanks in advance!
Note ... This topic came up in June (2006) ... and is archived, yet unanswered.

    Ciao all.
I'll tack onto this thread rather than starting a new one. It sounds like similar-ish territory.
We've had Airport Express for about three weeks after our Airport Extreme gave up the ghost after 14 months. We have a DSL modem connected to Airport Express, and three computers - eMac, iBook G4 and Powerbook G4 - connected wirelessly. Or we did, until tonight.
On the eMac, I lost my wireless connection. The Airport symbol was still black, and full strength, but my time connected stats disappeared. At the same time, my wife had the same thing happen on her Powerbook. Then the Airport symbol grayed out. As did the Powerbook. I fired up the iBook and the same thing was happening.
Briefly, for a couple of seconds, the Airport symbol would return to black, with, on a couple of occasions, the time connected stats reappearing. We would be connected again. Then the symbol would gray out again.
And the network name would have disappeared from the Airport menu.
If I turned off Airport and turned it on again, the symbol would be greyed out, but the network name would be there. Only, when I tried to connect, I would get the dreaded An Error Occurred Joining The Selected Wireless Network.
And I couldn't access the Airport Express via either Set Up or Admin.
I rest the Airport Express back to factory settings. The Airport symbol remained greyed out, but the Apple default wireless network was visible in the Airport menu. But I would still get the dreaded An Error Occurred, etc message.
Through Airport Set up, I was able to detect the Airport Express' default name and even the network name, but still wasn't able to connect to it.
Trying again, I was told that no new Airport networks could be found.
I've had basically the same results trying all three computers.
In terms of lights, the Express will sit there with a solid green light through all these shenanigans.
The internet connection is solid. Plugging the modem straight into the computer puts me online.
Do we have - as I fear - a lemon of an Airport Express after three weeks?
Hopefully someone can ... help us ...
    TIA

    am i along with this?
    airport utility 5.4.2 can`t get a new update 7.4.2

    Ok. Got it fixed.
    For a real fix:
Try trashing the ~/Library/Application Support/Apple/AirPort folder. This should solve the problem this time and next time.
If you are reluctant to do that, log into your 'test' account. (You do have a test account, don't you?)
    Do the update from there.
Apparently we have something corrupted in our support directories for the AirPort device.
I first fixed my problem by doing the alternate log in method and found that all 3 of my devices were needing a firmware update but only the Capsule was reporting an update within my own account.
