Thermal Problem Causes Screen Cracking in Video iPod

We purchased a 30Gb video iPod for Christmas. Last week the screen seem to have cracked pretty much on it's own. It was fine, went in the pocket, and twenty minutes later--without any seeming cause--it came out cracked and with two large, round ink blot looking spots on the otherwise blank white screen. It was in the protector and had absolutely no exterior damage whatever. At day 100 after the purchase we were concerned about warranty. But we called the Apple Store in Tampa, made an appointment and took it in.
The Genius Bar person said it was "thermal." That is, a component inside overheated, causing the inner glass layer of the screen to crack. She had seen about a half dozen of these with the video iPod. Usually, according to her, it happens on recharging. You plug it in at night and in the morning it's cracked. But here, it happened just during normal operation. Fortunately this cause for cracking was covered and we got a new iPod on the spot. Apparently here are some signs to look for:
1. No exterior damage and you didn't drop it (that's not covered)
2. Can be dark ink blot looking spots on the screen
3. Any cracking is strickly of the inner glass layer
4. The seam along the side is not popped open (evidence of a drop)
5. It just seemed to do it on it's own and you honestly can't think of any reasonable cause.
They get a lot of people who drop their iPods or sit on them and crack the screen. That's not covered. But if the above describes yours, get in touch with Apple.

Joseph.
I wanted to know if you could help me. I am having the same problem as you with my ipod. Apple isn't acknowledging that this is a problem here in Australia. I told them about your post on here and showed them the link but said there was no way to prove this as true. If you have any way to prove this as true and that you ipod was replaced that would help me out alot.
Hope to hear from you.

  • Problems with music tracks on Video Ipod that worked fine on ipod mini

Just got a video ipod on Christmas. Have owned an ipod mini for two years.
Transferred music and playlists from Itunes Library into the new video ipod.
I'm finding that some of the audio tracks that played fine on the ipod mini are
experiencing problems on the Video ipod. The commonality among the problem tracks are that they were custom tracks I made through Final Cut Pro and exported out as AIFF's. I then used the "Convert to AAC" function in ITunes to change them to AAC before putting them on the ipod mini. Again, these all played fine on the ipod mini. These problem tracks also tend to be long....50 minutes or more...they're comedy albums transferred into Final Cut Pro from off-air VCR/DVR tapings and are one long track.
These same files, while AAC, have problems starting up on the video ipod,
freeze the display and menu controls for a few seconds, or won't play at all. Other normal tracks from CD's or the Itunes store are fine.
Any correction ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • HELP!!! Blue/Yellow Strip on screen of 30gb video iPod

I've restored my ipod, started from scratch, installed older versions of itunes,.....but nothing seems to get that blue/yellow strip away.
The weird thing is it only appears on my videos...not on the main menu, photos, even podcasts don't have that strip. The strip is always in the same area of the screen, sometimes only segments of the strip appears and if something is moving in the video, it will flicker as well. Yet the main area is the strip and the colours of the strip fluctuate according to the colour of the video at the time (but it is always either blue and/or yellow)
It started happening (the blue/yellow strip) at the beginning of October. I had updated iTunes to 7.01 and iPod one morning and I remember I dropped my iPod from a height of abt 1m onto the carpet floor. I don't remember what happened first - dropping it or updating it - but that night, the strip was there and it hasn't gone since.
The strip and segments of the strip seem to appear intermittently but most times, it's there whenever i play a video. All my videos are converted using Videora and i tried Xilisoft as well, but the strip was still there.
Like I said before, I've restored it, uninstalled and installed everything but it's still there. An even weirder thing was that I installed iTunes 6.05 thinking it would eliminate the strip. While it did reduce it (segments of the strip popped up from time to time), whenever I connected my iPod to my computer, it would automatically reboot over and over. So I uninstalled it, restored my iPod and currently I have iTunes 7.02 and iPod 1.2. The blue/yellow strip is still there but it's not automatically rebooting anymore.
I'm no good at technology and so i've uploaded a few pictures to illustrate my point

I'm sorry for such a long post but this has been bothering me for a while now and I really want to know what I should do. I'm not sure if I damaged the harddisk when i dropped it but everything apart from my videos are fine. I'm really lost about what to do , so please help.
Your help is very much appreciated!

    Thank you for replying
sigh I was hoping it wouldn't be a harddisk problem but it definitely does seem like the only answer :S
An iPod repair company? Any recommendations? I'm not sure where to find one in Australia...would they fix it if I took it to the Apple shop? lol sorry...I didn't buy this iPod (my uncle got it in US) and I've never had any problems with it before...

  • Problem viewing album artwork on video ipod

My problem is that I'm unable to view album artwork on my ipod in full screen, whether it's from the itunes store or if I copy/paste an album cover pic myself. You can see the artwork fine on the left next to the song/artist/album, it's just blank when you want to see it full screen. The thing is that my ipod is Windows formatted and this has only been happening since I got a Mac and have been doing all my itunes/ipod stuff on it. I wanna know if this is normal for a Windows formatted ipod on a Mac or if there is a way to fix this (without formatting it to Macintosh) because all my other songs with artwork that I synced with Windows show up fine in full screen view. Please let me know. Thanks.

After you added the album work to your songs, did you import or re-import those songs to the IPOD?

  • Audio sync problem with screen capture/gameplay video from Bandicam, converted by Freemake.

I recently purchased the student discount for Adobe creative cloud which gave me access to Premiere Pro CC which I've been using to edit my YouTube videos.
I use a popular recording software called Bandicam to record my PC gameplay. Bandicam like many other software's allows me to record my commentary OVER the gameplay. When I play back the recorded video in windows media viewer the audio and gameplay are in complete synchronization. I then use Freemake Video Compressor to convert the recorded gameplay from an AVI file to an MP4 file. Then I import that file into the latest version of Adobe Premiere Pro. When I play back the video during editing, the audio and video appears out of sync by about five seconds.
Like I said, I don't record my gameplay and audio separately like some other people, so it can't possibly be an editing mistake. I've tried dozens of different editing software's (all free crappy ones) and everything is fine. This issue only occurs with Adobe Premiere Pro. I have installed the latest update of the program and have just recently tried re-installing it as well. Nothing seems to work for me, or for the many, many people who I have seen in random forums all over the net with this same problem. It appears to be an issue that isn't only happening to me.
Due to this issue, I'm very behind in my YouTube schedule. Apologies if this is rather long, I just want to get what I paid for.
Thanks for taking the time to read and respond

I understand that you scanner bulb is to low with your HP Officejet J4680, on Windows 8.1. I am happy to look into this for you!
Some questions for you, if you do not mind:
Are you able to place a sheet of paper on the scanner glass and make a copy of it? Or does the printer provide the same error message?
Is the printer plugged into a surge protector? Or Directly into the wall outlet? Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.
If you make a copy and lift the scanner lid, do you see the light bulb come on, and the scanner bar moving?

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.
When I go to iPod Updater and try to update the software on my iPod I get this message:

  • Lost video ipod

my friend told me there was a way to find stolen or lost i pods...
what do u do. cause i lost my video ipod and.. apparently i seriously need to find it.

all the owner has to do is be more respomsible and cautious of where they leave their ipod. how about not leaving it anywhere!. Its not applees responsibility to enforce a single thing. Just like BMW shouldnt be responsible in encorcing me as an owner to completely secure my car from a possibility of being stolen. Its the ownners liability to take care of their stuff if not well they suffer with a lost ipod.

After a week, try the steps listed here...

  • IPod Nano LCD screen cracking/scratching

i am a possible, going to be nano buyer and i was wondering if anyone who is a owner has had problems with the screen cracking and/or scratching. Also this is a question for owners with the problem and APPLE if the screen gets cracked or overally scratched withing warranty will apple replace it with a new one? also for people in singapore is there anywhere that i can get a 4GB nano, as most places have said they dont have them. thank you
      Windows XP

The screen scratching issue is really going to depend on just how badly you treat the device. I don't know how the screens are getting so badly scratched, and in normal use I can't see anything other than normal wear and tear. My 3G iPod is the same - a few scuffs and scratches, but nothing to stop it working.
If on the other hand you place the nano into your pocket without a protective case, keep change and car keys in the same pocket, then yes, it WILL get scratched. If you drop it or drag it over rough surfaces, if you take a sharp implement to it, if you use abrasive cleaners on it... and probably loads of other 'ifs', you'll get scratches on it.
They are not indestructible and the LCD screen is not harder than diamond. Take care of your Nano and you should be fine.
Taking it back with scratches through normal wear and tear, or through poor care, will not get you a replacement. You would have to show that it was an actual fault with the Nano itself, and I get the distinct feeling most are fine
As for purchasing a 4GB model, have you tried the online Apple store?

  • The other day I dropped my iPod touch and the screen cracked and my warranty is up how do i get it fixed. Do I order an screen and have Apple repair it of do I have to

The other day I dropped my ipod touch and the screen cracked and my warranty is up how do I get it fixed. Do I buy a screen and bring it to Apple to repair od do I have to repair it. Please help me

Apple does not repair iPods, but will replace the entire iPod for a flat fee; see the Repair Pricing section here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/faq/
There are independent iPod repair services that may be able to replace the screen for less. Do a web search for "ipod repair". Some places also will sell parts and instructions for doing the repair yourself, but the connectors and parts are delicate and it's easy to cause further damage, so attempt this only if you are confident in your skills.
    Regards.

  • Plugging in Video iPod crashes WinXP (Blue screen)

I got my fiancee a Video iPod for Christmas. Unfortunately, WinXP crashes the moment the iPod is plugged in, giving a BSOD for usbport.sys. I've done a full reinstall of XP (needed to anyway), and all drivers/patches are completely up-to-date (yes, even checked the manufacturer's websites directly.) The really strange part is that the iPod connects correctly to my laptop. The issue goes beyod annoying though, since the computer with the problems is the PC we use as a media center i.e. it has the full audio/video library... any ideas?
    Thanks!

    hi Frostine!
Anyway, when they connect the ipod the computer completely crashes to the blue screen of death and does the physical memory dump. There is an error message, something along the lines of a driver issue.
we can sometimes narrow this down a bit by checking on the numerical and text codes showing up with the blue screen. (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm checking on:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
can you get that information for us from their PC?
(if the screen is specifying the file that Windows is crashing on, that would be helpful to know too.)

  • "White Screen" error after most recent update 60 gig video iPod

I just received the most recent iPod updater software. I installed the updater and ran same. After the update process my 60 gig video iPOD cannot be recognized by my MAC G5. It has a "White Screen" and WILL NOT turn off! When I attempt a reset it simply gives me a 2 or 3 tone beep (I've never heard the tone before). The screen goes dark and it reboots to a white screen. I've re-installed updater and iTunes. I've switched USB ports. I've shut down the computer as well as rebooted same. I've allowed the iPOD to fully discharge (which happened quickly since the screen will not blank). When the unit is plugged into the USB port it charges and the white screen reappears. The updater now refuses to see the iPod so I cannot reset to factory defaults. Any ideas?

Apple's whole tech support schtick is barely one step ahead of Dell's! The charge premium prices for their product and I like Apple a lot, but their demand that you be either an Apple Care customer or .MAC user to get even rudimentary support *****!

Ok, for all the others out who experience this problem....I spent about an hour on the phone with Apple. You have to go to their SECOND level of support to get an answer. But there is a fix.
If you have a white screen and the unit beep 3 times after a reboot here's what you need to do to fix the problem. Warning all you data will be lost. It will have to be downloaded via iTunes again!
Disconnect the iPod from the computer. Hold the Select and Menu button down for about 7 seconds to until you get a beep. Then hold down the Select and PLAY button for 10 seconds. This will put the unit in hard disk mode. Wait awhile until the Apple screen goes away and if you get a progress bar wait until it is gone.
At this point it will take some finagling, but you basically hook the iPod back up to the computer and do a RESTORE. The iPod should be recognized by iPod updater. Your data MAY still be in place, but if you do not do a restore to factory defaults with the updater you will get the white-screen-three-beeps-problem again.
Once you reboot into the language screen you can reconnect the iPOD and download your data from iTunes.
I complained this info SHOULD be posted online. They guy was very nice and agreed but said that engineering was still collecting data. He thought it was a dumb idea not to post online or allow the first level support guys to fix the problem.
Hey Apple...if you read this how about collecting data on your goddamned time and at your expense. You're the SOBs that collected $399 for the product! Ever seen the Comcast or AOL video on YOUTUBE? You guys could be next!

A broken screen is an accident but it is not abuse.  However, if the owner attempts a repair him/herself, that's abuse.  Although unrelated to the damage, if the device has been jailbroken, that's also abuse.
