Thermal Throttle in Prescott, broken or BIOS?

So the heatproblem with the LGA775 is a never ending story, so Ive learned, but Ive started to think MSI is not putting a lot of money into the BIOS team.
Heres a story: So I have this sig below, and I really wanted to overclock it a bit. I overclocked the x600 fairly easly, and thats GREAT..... Yes..... Now im seeing a 6-8 fps increase in HL2 and FarCry, of course using the 4.12b from ATI.
Prescotts are supposed to have something called thermal throttling (say it fast 5 times) and its supposed to throttle DOWN the CPU when it gets to hot. Now theres a program called Throttlewatch which lets you check that out.
I wanted to see how good my Retail heatsink+fan worked under real pressure. I ran Prime95, did a defragment, PCmark04, and little tool called CPU burn-in all at the same time.
Strangly when I used only Prime95 the CPU was stuck at 45-55% useage and it didnt go any higher.
With Prime95 after 2 hours I got CPU temp: 73°C (Thermal Protection supposed to kick in at 76 i think)
And then I ran the other setup, and got these CPU temps: 78°C!!!!!  :angryfire:and still no throttling......
The temps were read from Speedfan v.4.18, and as far as I know the BIOS reading is always 2-3°C higher than speedfan(at least in my 925X), so the BIOS reading was at 80-81°C, and thats not good.
Either I have a bad CPU, or the BIOS is REALLY, REALLY off......
What do you think????

I posted a thread on this subject but i was told i was a trouble maker and the thread was closed down.
I know of SO many other 925x owners who have the exact same problem.
Consculsion MSI should fix this silly bios. It can't be the CPU
Here is the thread I mentioned :
CAN MSI COME CLEAN ?? 925x heat problem
No you come on FORUM high and mighty, not reading help or suggestions...........
INTEL supply the chipset spex............. ASK INTEL why the hell this is happening???
Bioses are programmed to Intel spex. (There are limits set for stable performance)

Just send the mainboard back and use another manufacturer.... (Qtec and Asrock would be nice)

  • Thermal Throttling is killing me

I built my first p4 system (neo2 pls 3.0e AIW 9800 2x256pc4000) and so far am very happy with it exept that the prescott thermal trottling is kicking in at around 50c and killing my performance. Im used to how the thermal trottling works in amd64 but I not sure if its any different in prescott. Heres an example of my problems...
At stock speeds and vcore my system scores around 9000 mips in sandra arithmatic if I overclock to 3.5 ghz and up the vcore to 1.45 with load temps UNDER 50c I will score around 10300 in sandra arithmatic. If I overclock to 3.75 (which is stable @ 1.55 vcore) my load temps go to around 60 and my sandra scores will fluctuate, if the room is cold and the cpu is cold I maight be able to squeeze out a 10500 sandra score but if the cpu is warm when I run the test I will only score around 7500. Im assuming this is the thermal throttling but why is it kicking it at over 50c this seems like a reasonable temp. I would understand it if did this at 70c but 50 is still low. HOW CAN I DISABLE THERMAL THROTTLING???
i GET SIMALAR RESULTS IN 3DMARKS2001 and superpi

balewolf, See my signature for some ideas on how to cool the CPU down
    But....
More important is the fact that running 1.55 vcore thru a Prescott is a sure what to end up with an expensive paperweight.
Do you really need to go that high to get a stable overclock? My 2.8 E will run stable at 3.61 using the stock Vcore ( 1.36 -1.40)
A prescott employes what is called Dynamic VID .In a nutshell Dynamic VID throttles the Vcore up or down according to the load on the cpu and heat being produced.
The danger of running 1.55 is that you are on the high limit of what this chip can take and if Dyanamic VID kicks in it could fry your chip.
MSI chose to lock down the Vcore in some of the boards because of this .
You can read about it here
    Prescott Dangerous Tweaks
You can read more about Dynamic VID here if you like
    Dynamic VID explained
Your scores might be low because the Dynamic VID is trying to keep your chip from frying itself
    Hope this helps

  • SatPro A60 can hardly run at 2.8GHz since Thermal Throttling issue

Hey guys, a nightmare for A60, its CPU clock can hardly run at 2800MHz which it's supposed to, since the A60's 75? Thermal Throttling Deadline is too easy to reach.
By using utilities called RightMard CPU Clock and Mobilemeter , I found that A60's entry temprature to Thermal Throttling was 75?. When that temperature is reached, cpu clock would slow down to 1500 MHz (you cannot see this by using normal test program, because Throttling is like cheating...i.e force CPU to halt for sometime in order to prevent overheating), and when temperature go back under 70?, it will return 2800 MHz. Another deadline: the auto-shutdown temperature is 85? for A60.
Althought the temperature which Mobilemeter got is the temperature of the heat sink, not the CPU kernel, it seems that oshiba made this 75? deadline too low (Intel's default deadline is likely about 90?). Additionally, with the badly designed heating sink system, the temperature usually keeps above 70-80 ? with room temperatur 15? and only doing some basic word processing or browsing and also with the machine almost dust-free. All of these mean that the laptop can hardly run at 2.8GHz. You can never enjoy that speed in any graphic game.
The actual clock must be test use RightMark Clock, it can test whether CPU is forced to halt frequently due to Thermal Throttling. Anyone wants to do this experiment can download these two free software from:
    RMC(177Kb):
    http://cpu.rightmark.org/download/rmclock_18_bin.rar
    Mobilemeter(40Kb):
    http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Oakland/8259/release/0310/mm0310.zip
along with SuperPI, which can make the CPU temperature as high as you like by opening it serval times at the same time
    http://ftp15.enet.com.cn:88/pub/system/sysanaly/superpi-8.zip
Finally, my original idea to write such topic here is not only telling a truth, but also that I want Toshiba people could do something on this issue, either make an updated bios to allow turn Thermal Throttling off, or make the deadline for it higher than just 75? ,
like you did on satellite 1805's bios updating last time:
    Version 2.10 09-24-2002
A modification was made to allow BIOS alone to enable and disable CPU throttling during Windows 98SE operation.
Give the original CPU speed back, because that's the only reason I and some other people chose this machine.

    Hi Al
Well, I dont know if you have experience in the notebook technology but the warmness is a known issue on all notebooks. Its a fact that all parts (Cpu, graphic card, etc.) in the unit produce a lot of warmness and its very difficult to cool all this parts because there is no place. You can not compare the notebook and desktop PC!
Furthermore to protect from overheating the CPU has an internal temperature sensor. (You have to know this) If the computers internal temperature rises to a certain level, the cooling fan is turned on or the processing speed is lowered. You can select whether to control the CPU temperature by tuning on the fan first, then if necessary, lowering the CPU speed.
Or, by lowering the CPU speed first, then if necessary, turning on the fan. You can use the Cooling Method item of the Basic tab in Toshiba Power Saver.
    These are the special features:
Maximum Performance: Turn on fan first, then if necessary lowers CPU processing speed.
Performance: Uses a combination of fan and lowering the CPU processing speed.
Battery optimized: Lowers the CPU processing speed first, then if necessary turns on the fan.
Furthermore if the CPU temperature reaches an unacceptably high level with either setting, the system automatically shuts down to prevent damage.
Hope this description can explain this issue.
    Best regards

What does that mean?  Have you tried to recovery the BIOS yet by triggering the AMI BIOS Recovery Routine with a PS/2 Keyboard Command (CTRL + Home)?
What have you tried to recovery the BIOS? (besides moving around components)
Test the system in barebone configuration.  Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from your PSU and Attach a PS/2 Keyboard. Then press CTRL + Home.  See if there are any changes regarding the Bootblock/POST Checkpoint displayed.

  • T440s - keyboard is broken after BIOS update to 2.25

    Hi,
today I've updated my Lenovo T440s BIOS to 2.25 version. The update was performed using Software updates in Lenovo Solution Center and everything was successful.
After computer reboot the keyboard has been mulfunctioned:
when I hold Windows Key the following char is produced {}Y (moreover on Windows 8.1 speekers turn downs, metro apps panel from W8.1 is show and next chars are uppercase)
when I press/hold Right arrow key the following char is produced ń
This is not OS dependent issue - I tried to use Rigth arrow in BIOS menu and it doesn't work.
Do you have any suggestions what to do? Or any tips how to restore previous version of BIOS?
I'm looking forward to hearing any tips.
    qinto

Roll-back to 2.24 version fixed the problem, but the issue with current BIOS version remains.
EDIT: Unfortunately the roll-back hasn't solved the problem - working with keys mentioned above is better, but still holding Win Key and Right Arrow causes the same problems.

  • Overheating = under clocking CPU?

    Hi
    I have a new g505s with a a8-4500m CPU which is 1.9ghz (up to 2.8ghz) and 8gb ram,
7640g graphics. Right now i can see that current speed is about 2400 mhz per core in Overdrive, but if I start playing a game, this will drop to about 1850mhz right away and seems to stay there. It is as if the turbo core gets disabled. Is that normal?
AIDA64 Extreme is reporting 54-68 degrees for each core.
HWMonitor reporting that the "package" is 100-110 degrees.
    Could it be thermal throttling?
I have updated BIOS and drivers for 7640g

  • Portege R500 - CPU never goes beyond 50% (throttle)

My Portege R500 has a C2D U7700 processor, which is always operating at half it's maximum speed. And when I say always, I mean that CPU load makes no difference, battery/AC-power makes no difference, and power plan also makes no difference.
Note that I am not talking about P-states! The processor goes to 1,33GHz when I expect it to. I'm also NOT talking about the thermal throttle, because the cpu is not overheating at all. I'm talking about the *normal power saving throttle*.
    How do I know this?
Well, I turned out that this CPU is actually slower than a Atom N270. That couldn't be true, so I went to investigate. I downloaded [RMclock|http://cpu.rightmark.org/download.shtml] and noticed that the throttle never goes higher than 50%. RMclock can also forcibly disable the throttle, and then YES my laptop is literally twice as fast (which can be seen in any CPU benchmark). But after 10 seconds or so, the throttle is back and the laptop is back to half it's maximum speed.
Alright, here's what I've tried so far:
    1) In HWSetup, set Dynamic CPU Frequency Mode to "Always High". No change.
    2) In Vista, enable "High performance" power plan and max out the "CPU power management" option in advnaced options. No change.
    3) In RMclock, set the profile to *only* use the throttle state of 100%. No change.
    4) In RMclock, disable the C1E instruction. No change.
So. How do I get the throttle to operate and 100% when I need it to? Otherwise I could have bought an Atom-based netbook just as well :(
    Please help :)

    Hi!
I agree with Ivan25. It would be interesting to know if you use the factory settings. I mean a preinstalled Windows version with all drivers and tools from Toshiba. This is recommended to make sure that all works perfect on the notebook.
Have you checked the CPU throttle only with RMclock or with task manager too?
Try to load the default settings in BIOS and check it again.

  • Change Vcore on Prescott MSI 865PE 6728 Neo2 is possible !!!

    hello
a vcore change on the MSI 6728 Neo-2 IS possible, you just have to use the bios version 1.9 !!! but you dont have the advance of the bugs fixed in actual version.
it looks like MSI only "HIDE" the vcore settings. the tool "AMIBCP75" dosent work on the new AMI bios. does anyone have a new AMIBCP for 8 series bios ???
i hope that msi change this very very soon, cause without a vcore change for prescott this board is NO hardcore overclocking board ! very bad thing !
looks like epox also stops vcore change on prescott in new bios
(sorrys for bad english :-) )

psycho303, You might want to read this before you change your V Core
    http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTg5
    Quote
I discussed the Vcore change question with the board designer over last weekend. Base on my understanding, the reason we didn't offer that when Prescott is populated was because a new Intel VID design on Prescott: "Dynamic VID" (VID becomes variable on different stages). According to the board designer, if M/B (BIOS) overwrite the Vcore, Dynamic VID will become invalid which might damage the CPU (Prescott Core) when power stage changed.
It is my understanding that bios version 1.9 does not support this VID and you could end up with a "dead" chip.
After updating my bios I can watch the Vcore throttle up and down as the load on the CPU changes . At an idle it is around 1.36 and under a load it can go as high as 1.48. If you bump up the starting point of the Vcore it could throttle up higher than the chip can handle
I am able to get 3.59 out of my chip on the stock vcore and can go much higher but I am using "Air" and have to watch the heat.

  • Satellite M30-951 graphic card or video BIOS does not work properly

On the BIOS and boot pages strange characters occur (screenshot www.audioberlin.com/M30-951_SCREEN.jpg).
XP boots up but the elements displayed freeze and the display becomes black for a second. The system becomes slow and does not react any longer.
Maybe these symptoms started after having tried to watch a movie which was not encoded correctly but I am not sure.
I already tried different video drivers (Nvidia FX GO5200), changed the BIOS from 1.7 to 1.6 and back again and reinstalled XP Pro. I also substituted the RAM. Nothing changes :(
Could a broken video bios be the problem? And how could this problem be solved?

    Hi buddy,
no, its not a broken videobios. Your graphicscard is defective and thats a 100% fact. My girlfriend had an M30-244 and the same error occurred with her machine.
At this time she had warranty on her machine, and they replaced the Mainboard of the machine.
After the replacement everything was fine again. So if you have still warranty on your Rig then give it to repair; otherwise you can give the machine to ebay. :)
Sorry dude, but thats a not very nice fact, which I can tell you.

  • CPU Throttling New GT70 2PC GTX 870

Hello friends. I noticed something odd on my new laptop. I have encountered a few of the issues that others have mentioned with regards to wireless and believe I have mostly resolved that but have since started to notice performance issues that corresponds with events in the windows logs stating that the CPU is getting throttled. This occurs both during non intensive use at sometimes random times other times while it is in heavy use.
I assume its due to overheating which would be rather unfortunate since this is a brand new machine.
According to MSI Live update the bios version is E1763IMS.50T
    The mainboard is MS-1763
I have not updated anything but the drivers.
I am considering updating the EC and BIOS but wanted to confirm there actually are updated versions prior to heading down that path. I am not sure if there may be voltage or other performance updates etc that would help in a newer version of the bios. The naming convention is a bit confusing and when I use the MSI Live update tool is claims there is not a new version of bios available.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

After some testing I have noticed a pattern that directly coincides with the events logged in event viewer that aligns with what seems to be throttling of the CPU and GPU as reported using coretemp and GPUZ.
I have saved one such incident in a PDF which I can post. I tried looking for ways to insert an attachment to the forums and was not able to.
The event log error is "The speed of processor 0 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced state for 28 seconds since the last report."
I have correlated the time of these events with the temps for processor core 2 hitting 71 and reducing core speed (below 2300) and power for all cores (19). I have also been able to correlate with the GPU reducing clock speed from 966 to 270,and gpu memory from 1248 to 162 with temps at around 70.
So it seems that while the temps are really not that bad there is still some kind of throttling taking place within the BIOS that is causing lags while running applications. This pattern above is recurring 2-3 minutes apart.
If I can figure out how to post a file I can post the PDF I created.
    Thanks for any additional feedback.

  • Re: Tecra A10 - where are the release notes for updated BIOS?

    Hi,
I have a problem with my Tecra A 10, it occassionally shuts itself down.
I've updated from BIOS 1.4 to BIOS 3.0 to see if this fixes it.
I can't find any release notes to see what has changed between BIOS revisions, can someone point me to them?
    Thanks
    Dominic

    Hi as***,
Thanks for that, exactly what I was looking for.
I won't know if it's fixed it or not until I run the laptop for a few days as it only happens every now and again.
I can already see faster boot times after the bios update though, which is one of the things listed in the bios change history so it was worth updating it.
The laptop is only a few months old, I checked the heat sink before I updated the bios as I read this shutdown problem can be caused by overheating due to a clogged heat sink but mine is clean already.
It also has a problem with the USB ports, sometimes when I plug in a USB device it blue screens, again not consistently, just every now and again. I'm hoping the bios update might help with that as well but still going to look at any other firmware that might help as well.
    Thanks
    Dominic

    Hello,
I recently replaced the motherboard in my daughters Hp ZE5700 and now  windows XP will not complete installation and Im assuming it because the BIOS serial number, UUID and other information is missing. The replacment motherboard was the same model as the old one PN # 355478-001
I  can still use the old motherboard since the reason for replacment was just a bad power jack. My question is, is there some way I can copy/save the information from the broken motherboard bios and then restore this info to the new motherboard after I reinstall it?
I do know I can send this in for repair but Im sure the cost would be more than this old laptop is worth. The power jack has been replaced 2 times and is very badly burned this time and dont think its repairable.

    I have this motherboard 845PE Max (MS-6580 Ver.:2.0).
And i have some question about BIOS v4.0. Here is written: Update Description: Support CPU with HT function. Does it mean that this MB now support Prescott CPU? I know that in Cpu support is written that no, but it is with old BIOS version (A6580IMS.380). I think that CPU with another core (Northwood) doesnt support hyper-threading... I think that HT is supported only by Prescotts.

I believe bios HT support for your board, means HT support for 3,06/533mhz Northwood.
It´s the only Northwood/533mhz with HT ( why this support is coming so late I don´t know )
Your board has no support for Prescott 533/800mhz or CeleronD Cpu´s.
Probably it´s not enough with just a bios update, since it´s more too it regarding motherboard construction/powermanagement.
You need a new board if you want a 800mhz cpu or a prescott 533/800mhz cpu.
