Thermalright XP-120 and neo2 platinum

Has anyone tried to use this heatsink with a "platinum" series motherboard?
I have a neo2-pfs platinum.
I emailed thermalright about the fit of the heatsink and got this response:
"XP-120 will fit your motherboard if you can tilt 4 capacitors away from CPU socket to clear the heatpipes loops.  the underside of XP-120 fin will clear up to 38mm tall chipset cooler."
Does anyone know if this height is tall enough to clear the stock passive northbridge heatsink on a platinum series?
I guess I could always get a shorter cooler for the northbridge.

the way the caps are laid out, the tilting is VERY minor, so I don't believe this will be much of a problem.
I don't think it will be able to clear my northbridge heatsink though.  May have to replace it with a shorter passive cooler. (which will be ok because it will get plenty of air from the fan on top of the xp-120)
here's a link to this cooler.  anyone thought about it for a platinum series board?

  • Corsair XMS and Neo2 Platinum

Ok, here the situation. I have recently put together a new system.  My RAM (Corsair XMS PC3200C2 DDR400) is being read as DDR333.
Do anyone know how I can fix this?
    Here's the specs:
    MSI K8N2 Platinum
    Athlon64 3500+ (S939)
    Corsair XMS CMX1024-3200C2 (2x512)
    BFG 6800GT OC

update your bios to ver 1.2 or above - worked for me
Otherwise u could also try the following
Set memory speed to 200Mhz in Cell Menu (In the BIOS)
Try using slots 1 & 2 for memory
Try setting the default voltage a bit higher.
I think the best thing to do is boot from ONE memory stick - Update BIOS - then stick the second memory stick back in.
hope this helps - if u still have trouble try running memtest on each individual stick

  • CoreCenter with an AMD 3000+ s939 and Neo2 Platinum with 1.4 (original) bios

hi everyone, ı think ı need some help. I install Windows Xp with SP1 and ı downladed and installed the nforce drivers (5.10 version) from NVidia's site not MSI's. C'n'Q function is enabled in the bios, I install AMD's latest XP driver and set"minimum power consumption" from power options. And finally ı install CoreCenter. My question and problem is; Cooling function i think works (as ı see from CoreCenter and windows) temps go up and down but Quiet (fan speed) function [I mean CPU (~3183 rpm) an NB (~5113 rpm) fan speeds always go up of their full limits] only works when I enable the C'n'Q option in CoreCenter; the program is not adjust fan speeds automatically for lower noice, I have to enable C'n'Q option in CoreCenter every time ı restart my system. What's wrong? MSI's nforce drivers and C'n'Q ı think works before I format the system. Please Help
    thanx for replies

When you are using CnQ the system will automatically reduce fan speed (at least it should) when it is in the reduced operating mode. Your core clock goes down and your effective speed (MHz) also goes down when you are surfing or doing non-demanding tasks. If you start playing games  or doing anything cpu intensive the system should revert to it's highest setting which includes the fans on high speed. If you are getting abnormal behavior with Core Center you can refer to the many posts on that subject. Core Center has many bugs and Known Problems. Most people including myself chose to use other software for this purpose. If it works for you, go for it.

  • Zalman CNPS9500 + Corsair XMS3500LLPRO and Neo2 Platinum Help Needed!

I have just received the memory in my sig and need to install it in Dimms 1&2 closest to the cpu because dimm 4 is going bad I think? My old ram XMS 3200LL 2x512 has been running  Dual Channel in slots 3&4,  recently my PC has been getting random BSOD and taking a long time to get past the black w/ windows boot screen. If I put memory in slots 1&2 the problems go away.
Anyway, this new memory is the Pro and it is too tall for slots 1&2 so I need to know if the new Zalman (http://www.frozencpu.com/cpu-zal-19.html) will block the ram slots ? The Zalman I use now prevents me from using my new ram. Or, should I try to modify the fins to allow the needed clearance?

I don't use water myself...I like beer better
i've tried that, but i always found the reservoir empty after a good party night  . must be leaking somewhere
now, i think that the best option for a heatsink and fan would be the xp-90 coupled with a panaflo or papst fan. there's nothing that beats that combination at that price. for water cooling, there are many options out there, and everything depends on the budget. you can get kits ranging from 80$ to 300$ or more. so it might help if you can give us an idea on the budget you have for spending.
btw, the amd stock cooler is quite good, i was really amazed with what it can do (check my sig). compared to the intel stock hsf this one is in a different league.

thanks for your help, but it´s still doing it, the cables are all well conected, right now don´t know what I´m gone do, may be try with rma
I'm sorry, I wasn't clear.  Your mobo manual will have at least two different LED connections.  Only one is correct for your case. To make matters worse, it's possible that your mobo LED pins and your case LED connectors aren't color coated.  The mobo I have (Neo 4 Plat) was like that.  My Power LED switch on my case was different that what the book showed.  If you have it plugged into the green area on the mobo then try the black area for the Power LED.  Now if that doesn't work then it's something else. Remember after you plug it into the black area, remember to reset your CMOS as before.
If that doesn't work, did your board come with a D-bracket?  The little bracket with LED lights on it used to diagnostic utility.

The hype was these boards would be available at the begining of December, and that, after some minor delays/setbacks.  I've been playing with parts ment for the NV4 based systems since the begining of December.   MSI used to send me test boards direct from Taiwan to debug and stress--hell, I couldn't even get them to answer emails let alone send a test board.

  • Neo2 Platinum and AMD X2 ??

I am currently running an Athlon64 3500 in my Neo2 Platinum with
    BIOS v1.4.
I want to upgrade my CPU to an Athlon 64 X2 3800 Dual-Core
Will i have to upgrade my BIOS ?
I`m running Windows XP Home. Can i easily flash the
    BIOS using Live Update ?
I`ve done BIOS flashes before in the past with a floppy drive.
But now, i no longer have a floppy in my system.
I guess i could borrow one from someone if i really had too !!
I just downloaded and installed Live Update from the MSI web site.
How reliable is it to flash the BIOS with it ??

    Noooo! Stop!
Live Update is the absolute best way to guarantee a BAD BIOS flash!
Download & install your BIOS file manually via floppy and flashing utiliy - it's the most reliable way
That being said... You will have to upgrade your BIOS and reinstall XP to make sure it uses both cores effectively. Sounds like a pain, but it's worth it.

  • MSI K8NGM-V and Thermalright XP-120

Does anyone know if thers are compatility issues between the MSI K8NGM-V mainboard and Thermalright XP-120 CPU cooler?
If issues exist, are these issues resolved with the Thermalright XP-90 or SI-120?
    Thanks in advance.
    /DeCay

MSI K8NGM-V is not a Via board so please do not continue the topic there. I will move it...
Second; If you have one Dimm that is DDR400 and another that is DDR333 then both Dimms will run at the slowest common speed which in this case is DDR333. You really should not max RAM anyways.
Just a point of info... The MB is not a problem for memory timings anyways. The memory controller is not on the MB in a K8 based system. It is inside of the CPU and you have to conform to the CPU's RAM controller for what you may or may not use for RAM. There are many levels of memory controllers built into the various K8 CPU's so you should get familiar with what your CPU that you have will and won't do for RAM. That will help answer some of your questions.

  • Reboot problem with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and 250 GB SATA HDD

I'm having a "reboot" problem with my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. After turning my system on it will run without any problems, until I reboot. After a reboot it will always hang after the initial windows-bootscreen. The HDD-light will remain on. If, instead of going into Windows XP SP2, I try to enter the BIOS after a reboot (DEL) the system will also hang (blank screen with blinking cursor).
It started doing this after I installed the Maxtor 250 GB SATA disk. Before, I didn't have problems rebooting. If I disconnect the Maxtor drive I can reboot and enter BIOS and Windows each and every time. Reconnecting the Maxtor 250 GB SATA drive will return the reboot problem. I always have to use the power swith to get a working system again. It's not enough to do a hard reset (this has the same effect as rebooting).
Here are the details of my system:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (BIOS 1.B)
    Athlon 64 3200+ (Winchester, 2 Ghz, 512 KB cache, stepping DH-D0)
    2 x Kingston KVR400X64C25/512, 512 MB, DDR, PC3200 (2,5-3-3-8 T1)
Asus Radeon AX800 Pro (256 MB)
    PSU Antec Sonata 380W
HDD Maxtor 80Gb ATA (6Y080P0, Pri Master)
    HDD Seagate 250Gb SATA (ST3200822AS)
HDD Maxtor 250Gb SATA (6V250F0 - jumpered in SATA150 mode, the mobo wouldn't work with the drive in SATA300-mode)
Aopen COM5232/AAH Pro CD-Writer ATA (Sec Master)
BenQ DW1640 DVD-Writer ATA (Sec Slave)
P.S. The NVidia IDE-drivers are NOT installed. System is not overclocked.

Thank you for all the replies. Upgrading to the latest Nvidia IDE-drivers did not fix my problem. Moving to other SATA-ports did not help either. Upgrading the mobo's BIOS is not really an option (I'm using one version before the most recent and there isn't anything in the fixlist of the latest BIOS).
Now I've contacted Maxtor for (hopefully) a new firmware.

  • ATI 9000 and K8N Neo2 Platinum

Hello, I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard, 1gig (2x 512mb) Dual PC4000 Crucial Ballistix memory, AMD 64bit 3000+ Winchester and a ATI Radeon 9000 pro 128mb.  I am waiting on my X800 XT PE 256 arriving, but in the mean time i am having some trouble running Counter-Strike on this set up, my old system with same graphics card could run CS with 100fps no problem, but now it drops to around 30fps in a heavy gun fight, I have dropped all open gl and D3D setting to performance, messed around with the bios setting's but nothing help's, also I have tried many different ATI driver versions but nothing help, if anyone has had the same problems or can offer any possible causes solutions I would be very gratefull. Oh I have a OCZ 520W PSU

    Leon28,
The Radeon should perform at least as well as it did on your old comp. Are you using the same version of the Catalyst Drivers you used in your old comp?
You can get the latest  ATi Drivers to see if it makes a difference.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum AND SATA2

i have  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard with 3500+ cpu and WD 160 hard sata disk.
I 'd like to ask if my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard support sata2 hard disk drives, in order to know which HD  to connect as a second HD drive, SATA or SATA 2 ??

It'll see SATA2 as regular SATA. You won't loose any speed either. There are no hard drives that actually benefit from SATA2 spec speeds. Well, maybe in isolated near theoretical benchmark cases one current model might be faster in SATA2 mode.
We just haven't got the technology yet.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and Venice E6

    Hi!
I have just bought an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard and an AMD Athlon64 3000+ processor with Venice E6 core (ADA3000DAA4BW).
Will this mobo boot with that processor? Or do i have to use a Winchester to flash the BIOS first? Personal experiences would be helpful!
    Andres.

Your new board probably came with the 1.9 bios. The new 7025v1B.zip bios (1B only a couple days old) I think is for some of the new X2 AMD Processors. The MSI link to Products/Mainboards/Neo2/Processor Compatibility is now setup to use the 7025v1B.zip bios. As I recall the previous Processor Compatibility Chart for 1.9 bios was OK for all the Venice cores (E6 or not). I think it is only some of the latest E6 bigger models are affected by the latest 1B bios. Maybe someone has the older 1.9 bios Processor Compatibility Chart.
You shouldn't need to use a Winchester, some X2 processors would be recognized as earlier X1 models until the newer bios was installed. I think you should be OK with the 1.9 bios. I have the San Diego 4000+ and my board, one month old, came with the 1.9 bios installed.
