Thermocouple Noise and Calibration SCB-68

I'm measuring two Thermocouples on an SCB-68. Measuring voltage directly and converting or using MAX I get very steady but inaccurate measurments (they read about 8degC below known values).
If I short a channel and read it, I find that there is an offset in the micro volt range. Measuring this and subtracting it from the TC readings I find that my average readings are now pretty accurate but very noisy (+/- 1degC).
I also notice that if I increase the sampling rate the offset changes (which results in a change in the TC readings).
Is there a better way to eliminate the offset or do I have to tolerate the noise?

Hello Jeramy,
Because thermocouples produce such small signals (mV range), it is best to apply some sort of signal conditioning before measuring the signal. Gain should be applied to amplify the signal and make better use of the range of the ADC. Hardware filtering helps remove noise from the signal. Please see the following tutorial for more information on thermocouples:
http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/webmain/806355D26B7378B1862567EE0003A842
National Instruments offers a variety of signal conditioning products. Please see the following Knowledge Base for information on these products as well as the pros and cons of each:
http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/F0196F5B6CD8F60286256D4B00728B78?OpenDocument
To correct the offset, I would run a self-calibration on the DAQ device. You could also reduce the noise in your measurements by oversampling and averaging the signal. That way you don't have to buy new hardware.
Let me know if this does not help.

Sean C.

  • USB 6009 thermocouple noise

    I'm using NI-DAQmx 7.5, Labview 7.0, and a USB-6009.
I'm trying to get a more accurate reading from my j-type thermocouple.  It is now distorted with noise and jumps rapidly +/- 20 degrees around room temp without any heat being applied.  When heat is applied, it climbs as it should but with the same variation.  I haven't moved to the labview side of it yet, I'm still trying to get a usable reading in MAX.  I have it wired as a differential input with a floating signal source.  I've installed 10k ohm resistors for bias current return as instructed.  Installing the resistors helped but still leaves me with the readings shown in the attached pic.  I've also tried grounding my USB 6009 with no results.  Please help. john

    Hi John,
What you are running into is a problem with the actual voltage resolution of your USB-6009.  This device has 14-bits of resolution over a minimum range of +/- 1V.  That means that the voltage resolution is (1 - (-1))V / (2^14) = 2V / (16384) = 122uV.  While this is an excellent resolution for such a low cost USB device, you will still notice problems when trying to make a thermocouple measurement.  The reason for that is that Thermocouples make a very small output voltage (see image below).
Common thermocouple types have the following response:
K type: 41 microVolts per degree Celsius
J type: 56 microVolts per degree Celsius
T type: 52 microVolts per degree Celsius
There are a few options for ways to get around this limitation.
Good: You could read the signal in as a voltage and then manually convert that voltage into a temperature.  This would be the least accurate method, but it should allow you to average out your signal and then use the Convert Thermocouple Reading.vi to show the voltage as a temperature.
Better: If you want to keep using the USB-6009 to measure thermocouple, what you really need to do is first amplify your signal before you connect it with your device.  This should increase your resolution of the thermocouple allowing you to get more accurate temperature specs.  This will require some more complex programming to properly scale your measurements, but it will give you more accurate readings for relatively little cost.
Best: Opt for getting a USB device that is designed for taking temperature measurements such as the USB-9211A.  This device would give you a voltage resolution of 160mV/2^24 = 9.54 nV!  That's over 12500x the resolution of the USB-6009 that you currently have.
Hopefully the above information helps you better understand what is going on and why.  If you have any other questions feel free to post them here.

  • HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw makes horrible noise and will not move past initializing

Makes horrible noise and will not move past initializing.

    Hi @HealthITLadyRed,
I read your post and see that the printer is making noise and is stuck initializing. I would really like to be able to help you resolve this issue.
I have provided some steps to try to see if we can resolve this issue.
Check and remove any packaging material inside the printer and toner.
Disconnect the USB/Network/FAX and power the printer on Standalone.
Do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
If the issue persists, perform a power drain by disconnecting the power cord from the back of the printer and keeping the power button pressed for 30 seconds and in case of a power switch keep the switch in ON position for 30 seconds before reconnecting the power chord.
Update the printer's firmware by a USB connection. Software and Drivers.
Select Option 2 and wait for the page to load and then select the link for firmware. This resolved the previous posters issue.
I can send a private message with another step to try.
In the forum beside your handle name just click on the envelope to view it.
How is the printer connected? (USB/Ethernet/Wireless)
What happened prior to this issue? (paper jam, changed toner) Any feedback would be appreciated.
    Is this a new printer?
If you appreciate my efforts, please click the Thumbs up button below.
If there is anything else I can help you with, just let me know. Thank You.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

  • Did not listen to 'do not disconnect' and now there's a noise and a sad ipo

It all started when I was in a hurry and ejected my ipod from itunes. As usual, it was removed from the Source list but my ipod still said 'do not disconnect.' I unplugged it and left. Hours later I was at my friends house and plugged it into her laptop to get some of her songs. It wasn't recognized in her Source list and it started to make weird, loud, grinding noises. I reset it and the sad ipod face guy came up. I went to the support page and it said to fully charge it before anything else. So, all last night I charged it and it continued to make that horrible noise all night. I went back to the 5 R's and tried all of them. I finally went to restore it but it's showing that icon that means that it isn't charged enough for the computer to recognize it. Similarily, the ipod updater keeps asking me to plug in an ipod, even though it's plugged in. Now, every couple of minutes, as my ipod is plugged in to my comp via USB, the apple icon shows up, it makes that noise and then the sad guy pops up. What should I do? (I apologize for the length but there's just so much going on with this.)

Strange noises are a telltale sign of hardware failure. If you want to be totally sure that your iPod is a baddie, reset your iPod, and when the apple logo is showing, press and hold the rewind and clicker buttons for several seconds. When you do this, the iPod should "chirp" and the apple will reverse. Now it's in diagnostic mode. After doing this, try to run the automatic tests. (note that when in this mode, the trackpad doesn't work, you have to use the rewind and fast forward buttons to go back and forth). Have iPod plugged in when doing this. If you end up with a sad iPod icon, then it needs to be sent in...

  • HT1363 ipod making clicking noise and won't work

Ipod making clicking noise and won't work. Display see apple store. We live in a rural area so one is not close!

OK, I have the 30G w/video and it does that too. I've had it a year with no problems. My husband went on the treadmill with it a couple days ago and after a few songs it froze. I did the whole regime of toggling and pressing menu/select button, I put in on my Bose speaker/charger and it switched to very low battery warning. When I took it off to move to computer it said to connect to computer and use restore (in a few languages). I connected and it recognized it and I did restore and after a few minutes screen came up saying it could NOT restore. Then ipod was unrecognized and then ipod screen gave me the very sad little ipod picture with the support web site. At that point it began making the clicking nose - morris code does describe it but I was invisioning a little nano sprite in there with a chisel!!So, same as you, I go there and it's like a maze trying to find help!! Of course my warranty was up exactly 6 weeks ago!! I tried linking through all the stuff like finding a service provider in my area, contact the "knowledge base" etc., and I can't get anyone! Now what are we gonna do?

I want to upgrade my 2007 Mac desktop to 10.5 Leopard. I am currently running on 10.4.11. When I put the leopard disk into the drive all it does is make a weird noise and then spits the disk right back out. It doesn't do this with any other discs, only this software. Is it still possible to update this computer?

    Yes. Try Amazon.
Before you do upgrade to Snow Leopard, make sure your Mac meets the requirements.
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard - Technical Specifications
Make sure the disc you tried using doesn't have any fingerprints or smudges on it. The optical drive can't read the disk otherwise.
If your Mac won't read the disc, might be a good idea to rule out any problems with the startup disk BEFORE trying to upgrade the system.

  • When I plug in my iPhone it makes the noise and charges, but wont bring it up in iTunes. It brings up my iPhone in a file under my computer

When i plug in my Iphone it makes the noise and charges, but wont bring it up in itunes. Instead it brings up my iphone in a file under my documents... Any help..??

Syncing shouldn't trouch you photos unless you have photos in a Photo Library album.  These would be photos that were synced to your phone from your computer.  If you do have any, you'll need to use an app like PhotoSync to transfer them to your computer prior to syncing.
If you prefer to backup your camera roll photos prior to syncing, open iTunes and go to Preferences>Devices and check "Prevent...from syncing automatically".  Then connect your phone to your computer and import them as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.
Then, to minimize data loss, follow the steps in this user tip: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141.  To follow the steps, first open iTunes and go to View>Show Sidebar.  Also, Transfer Purchases is now located in File>Devices.

  • How can I configure NI PCI 6221 and DAQ SCB-68 for pressure sensors?

    Hello
    everybody,
I am using the measuring board (NI PCI 6221) and DAQ
    SCB-68 for the data acquisition.
With the DAQ-Assistant I created AI for the voltage of
pressure sensors. In a big indicator panel from this DAQ-Assistant I see the
voltage for both sensors in the correct size. But if I set sensors in the
blockdiagramm to control the signals for sensor one I get a wrong voltage size
    and for sensor 2 nothing.
How can I configure this data acquisition equipment to
    get the correct signals?
Thanks a lot for your help.

I do not know the type of sensor you are using. But pressure transducers may have a very low output voltage(in the mVolt range). They also need an excitation voltage. Here is an introduction. http://focus.ti.com.cn/cn/lit/an/sloa034/sloa034.pdfThen working with pressure sensors I always use 3 stages in the circuit.
1 Instrumentation Amplifier as a preamp
    2 filterstage
3 Final amp and output buffer
(you may combine stage 2 and 3)
Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted
(Sorry no Labview "brag list" so far)

  • 10.4.10 vers 1.1 | Loud noise and Hum on speakers thru' USB Audio Interface

After doing this update all of a sudden my Mbox2 produces loud noise and Hum on my attached speaker when hooking up the power adapter to my MbookPro or adding a second display... I can virtually hear when the computer is computing thru' the speakers... This noise thing adds up the more equipment I hook up...
Does anyone know what this could be....???

This can happen if the software is "allowing"
more power to be accessed by the USB ports..
This isn't quite accurate. USB devices can ask for power, up to 2.5 watts (500 ma @ 5 volts), from a USB port. Software can query the device for its power requirements & shut down the power to it (& warn you it is doing so) if it exceeds that limit. However, the hardware in Macs themselves (& essentially all other computers) also have a number of power limiting circuits, independent of the OS software, that make it just about impossible for the software to "allow" more power than this to be drawn from the port. (If they didn't, they would not meet most of the world's safety codes.)
Moreover, if your USB speakers (or any other USB device) requires more than 2.5 watts, it would never have been bus powered under any version of the OS, assuming it meets USB standards (IOW, displays an official USB logo & is not itself defective).
If the technician is telling you something different, it might be a good idea to find a more qualified one, or at least get a second opinion.

That could be a clear sign of a damaged hard disk.  Can you try and force the iPod into Disk Mode and then connect it to iTunes so you can attempt a restore or even a low level reformat of the iPod's HD/file system.

  • Re: NB200 - Making noise and screen goes blank

    Hi
My notebook is making pitched noise and the screen becomes blank. Please help with this issue.
    Thanks

When that happens, does Windows still run in the background? Can you still see a faint image on the screen?
If yes, then the screen may be faulty (I don't think there is an FL Inverter since its an LED Backlit screen).
If no, then it may be the motherboard.

  • Clicking noise and freezing during updating

Hello everyone, if anyone could help with the following problem i'd be more than grateful. my ipod recently wouldnt connect to windows and started making a clicking noise. to try an resolve this i have reset and restored. I thought this would solve the problem. However, when ipod is updating it seems to freeze, stop updating and clicking noise starts. the following message appears
the specified I/O operation on E: was not completed before the time out period expired.
the only way i can disconnect is to shut the computer down. My playlists appear but with no songs.
this is my 2nd ipod (clicking noise also happened so ipod was replaced in warranty) which is now out of warranty. I think my hard drive might be giving up? These discussions are my last hope! Do I buy a new ipod (possibly for the same thing to happen)? or is it worth getting it serviced? Does anyone out there have any ideas?

Even i have a Ipod with a click wheel and is behaving similarly.
Once i connect it to the PC (using USB) it shows the "Do Not Disconnect" sign forever and even iTunes does not recognize it, the hard disk is making some clicking noise and after some time windows returns timeout error "The specified I/O operation on E: was not completed before the time out period expired" !!
I think we are in the same boat, What do we do ???
    Thanks
