Thesaurus dictionary of English

Does anybody know some?(Online or offline)
I don't like usual dictionaries, I wanna know mean not translate.
If somebody knows something like please share(:
Sorry my English.

When a single word search term is entered into the US version of Google, at the top of the results page it says something like
Results 1 - 10 of about 228,000,000 for dictionary [definition]. (0.11 seconds)
Clicking on "definition" will take me to a dictionary definition.
Arch web sites primarily use US English. Two American flavored dictionaries are dictionary.com at http://dictionary.reference.com/ and Merriam-Webster, http://www.merriam-webster.com/ My browser's javascript blocker and ad blocker are very busy at the Merriam-Webster site.
For a more British-flavoured dictionary, try http://dictionary.cambridge.org/.
There is also WordWeb, http://wordweb.info/free/, a very good free application for MS Windows, but I don't know if it will run using Wine.

  • Multilingual Dictionary for English Books in iBooks 3.0?

In iBooks 3.0, can I look up the Chinese definition (translation) of English words using the built-in dictionary? It doesn't seem so, but I had assumed I would be able to when I first heard of the new features included with the iBooks update. If not, I'm hoping that this feature will be available at some point in the near future.

    Thanks, I missed that somehow!
Odd they would say it is "new", since the dictionaries were provided Sept. 19 with iOS 6 and are also available in iBooks 2.

  • Thesaurus / Dictionary

    Dear All,
I have a program that do the following
    1. User enters key word(s)
    2. The program surfs the website (s) to bring documents that are more relevant.
3.Another program will extract all the important words from those documents. Calculate the term frequency and also the document frequency.
I need to do the following
From those extracted words I need to create a thesaurus table in the following form
    Index : Term
    0 : Computer
    0 : Computers
    1 : Data
    2 : Database
    2 : Databases
Note: Similar Terms should have same index.
Can I use the term frequency/ document frequency to come up with the index value??
    Looking for your smart ideas!!!
    Cheers,
    --Vj

You will probabley want to use the java.util.Hashtable
class to store your "important words". If this is a client application (It does not reside on the server that the html files are on) you will need to open up a socket on port 80 of the server to request the webpages from the server. Then strip out all HTML tags and store the A HREF tags in a vector. You can then go through the document a look for "important" words. Then go to each of the sites in your vector of links.

  • How can I change the dictionary from english to german when in Pages

How do I change the spelling - proof reading from english to german when writing in Pages

If you want Pages to be all in German the text as well as the Menus etc, drag Deutsch to the top of the list in:
Menu > System Preferences > Language & Text.
If you only want some text to be Spell Checked in German select the text:
    Inspector > Text > More > Language > Deutsch
Language is like bold, color or the font, it is part of the text style.

  • Converting a German dictionary to English: USA dictionary

A German-based office sent me an InDesign file (CS3) and the Spell check is showing words as misspelled even through they are not. It is using a German dictionary, German: 1996 Reform, and that is what is creating the conflict.
How do I convert the German dictionary or get rid of that dictionary and make it use my preference of the Enlish: USA dictionary which I've defined in my InDesign Preferences. It appears that even though I tell it to use the US dictionary, it won't let go of the German dictionary.
Was is going on? Haben si ein answer? Danke!

The dictionary preference has nothing to do withthe language assigned to the text. That's a character-level attribute. The preference item allows you to pick which dictionary vendor to use in those cases where more than one dictionary is installed.
To change th language you must selet all the text, then choose the correct language from the language drop-down in the Character Panel or Control Panel. You might want to leave any German words set to German...

  • Chinese English dictionary.app

    Hi guys,
Is there a way for me to have the builtin Chinese dictionary display definitions in English in addition to Chinese? It doesn't really make sense from language leaning perspective that an unfamiliar word is defined using the same language with other unfamiliar words, I wish apple allows us to choose the builtin dictionaries. Is there a way to edit the dictionary.app so that the Chinese dictionary carries English definitions as well?

You can ask Apple to add new features via

  • Is there a way for the basic ENGLISH spell check dictionary to auto update? Its really annoying to have to update the spellcheck dictionary everytime FF updates

Every time FF updates, it forces me to download and install the spell check dictionary for English. It makes me just choose to use another browser since more often than not its opening facebook and I like spell check when I use fb. Is there any solution?

What Firefox locale do you use?
Is that the en-US version or another locale like the French locale?
You shouldn't lose installed dictionaries and other installed extensions when you update Firefox unless you would reset Firefox or a new profile got created for other reasons like problem with the profiles.ini file.
Are there otherwise problems with updating that you notice?
Note that in case you do not need all four French dictionaries then you can remove others and only keep the ones you need.
You can find the dictionary files in the dictionaries folder of the extension in the extensions folder in the Firefox profile folder or possibly in the Firefox program folder if you use a French Firefox locale (don't know if that locale includes a dictionary).
    *[email protected]
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

  • Wanted: Name of a lightweight English dictionary package

Does anyone know of a lightweight dictionary for English words? I want something that does not require network access, and ideally has a command line interface. That way I can highlight some words in an application such as my web browser, and hit a desktop shortcut key bound to "xterm -e <dictionary_app> `xclip -o`" and immediately see the word's definition.

The plan9port package includes a program called dict, along with information about where to obtain dictionaries which are properly formatted for it.

I have paid the full price for this through BlackBerry App World but I cannot use the app. What should I do?
Looking forward to a helpful response.

    Hello Neal,
A very long, very entertaining and very interesting debate already took place at least once in these forums (fora),
    about this question,
and more specifically because one has to take an American accent in Speech Recognition.
I think the issue here is one for Enhancements Requests, really. No imperialism, no insulting intelligences...
Apple is an American brand, that's how, in my opinion, everything comes from a US English basis.
Like Terminal and programmers default keyboard layout (US), etc.
Then some GUI options and programs may be implemented, and we can already enjoy plenty of them, although there's not enough of course.
    Your example, Dictionary:
Of course it would be nice to be able to choose between different online services (also in other languages, like in French between Le Robert and Le Larousse, and perhaps a third one from Québec), as even within the only British English, there must be several equally interesting options...
    Same for accents (Speech):
It would be such an achievement, to be able to speak other languages,
but also to be able to speak, say, French, in a User Account that's set in English,
    and of course,
to be able to choose between several different accents too, within each language!
    Dreaming, dreaming...
Seriously, your enhancement idea would be so welcome!
Please send it to: Mac OS X Feedback
    Until then,
    enjoy your US Mac!
    Axl

  • How can I make the thesaurus work for spanish words?

I have been using pages for about 4 months now, and usually I use it in english. I am currently writing a document in spanish but I can't manage to make the thesaurus, dictionary and wikipedia work for spanish words. I really need this to find synonyms.
Any idea what do I need to do? I don't want to change the whole pages into spanish, nor I want the spanish spell check (I know how to do that), I only need the thesaurus.

    Dear me, doesn't Español work?

  • British dictionary?

One of the 250 new features was supposedly a British dictionary for the Dictionary app, which would mean that the Dictionary app is no longer pointless for those of us on the other side of the pond, but it doesn't seem to be included, do I have to download this new dictionary from somewhere?
From the Mac OS X Lion feature list:
    British dictionary and thesaurus
Lion includes the Oxford Dictionary of English and the Oxford Thesaurus of English.

Don't worry, I found them in the dictionary preferences

I have found this annoying too. I'd rather all my documents use the Australian English dictionary, but Pages templates default to "English". That is, American English.
The only solution is to create your own templates ensuring that all the text in them uses your preferred dictionary.
I've sent Apple feedback requesting the default dictionary be a user preference. I'd recommend you do as well - the more people that request the change the more likely it will happen.

  • How can I change or add more dictionaries to Apples built-in dictionary?

    Hi,
I have recently up-dated to Mavericks and I just realized that my dictionary has changed from English to Spanish. I am in Spain but previous to updating tho OS i had and used the dictionary in English. Unfortunately I don't seem to have this as an option no more. Is there any way I can get that back?
Thank you guys in advance for any possible help you may give me.

    Hey el_loco,
I found the following info from another discussion:
Did you go to Dictionary.app/Preferences and check the box for the English dictionary and uncheck the box for the Spanish one?
    via: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4176243
So I'd suggest going to the Dictionary app, its Preferences, and see if you can change the option there.
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
    Have a good one,
