These range expanders are a pain....

First of all when i bought it and set it up and used the disk to run the setup program and the setup program FAILED to detect the WRE54G when it was well in range so I called linksys and the person on the phone was very helpful. The WRE54G Worked very well I had an excellent Signal But after about 6 weeks i noticed a high fluctuation in signal strength from excellent to low and i am a gamer so i can tell when the performance drops. why does it do this i know this is not supposed to happen so can anyone tell me why? i tried to download the update files and that failed i can get a very low signal without the range expander but i get an excellent with it most times why does it fail at random times like now. i had steady performance before and it started declining recently then fluctuating.

If the signal stregth is fluctuating you should tweak the wireless channel and see shich channel gives you steady performance...
If it does not help you should try to upgrade the firmware on both the units(router and range expander)...

  • Multiple range expanders

I have a large set up with 5 access points in a warehouse.  There are a few dead spots that I am trying cover up.  Though these trouble spots are not completely dead zones, I am trying to get better coverage.  Can I use multiple range expanders (WRE54g)?  I have read posts saying that multiple range expanders is bad, but can I use them if they each access a different access point?  If this is ok, how can I tell which range expander is accessing which access point?

If you use the auto config button you must be close to the access point which you are expanding or if the access points are close together turn off the ones that you are not expanding before pressing the auto config button then after it's setup turn on all of the access points.

  • Question about piggybacking range expanders

I am curious if this would work...
Point A- Linksys Wireless G router
    Point B- Linksys Range Expander
    Point C-Linksys Range Expander
    Point D- Linksys Range Expander
Let's envsion that points A, B, C, and D are on a straight line. They are far enough away in distance that point C couldn't reach point A without point B, etc.
Can I actually piggyback range expanders on each other in order to get back to the router?
Hope that made sense.... thanks so much for your help!

Here is an example of what would if you did this:
Point A- Linksys Wireless G router
    Speed 54 mbps
    Point B- Linksys Range Expander
    speed 26 +/- mbps
    Point C-Linksys Range Expander
    speed 12 +/- mbps
    Point D- Linksys Range Expander
    speed 6 +/- mbps
Like the post prior to me, use AP through your wireless network.
How much area are you trying to cover?

  • Two Range Expanders - How to enable security?

I have a linksys router (wrt54g ver 2) and two WRE54G range expanders both version 3.  Everything is working fine but I can't enable security because I can't access the set up webpage of one of the expanders.  Any ideas?  Or maybe I can use Mac Filtering but would I use the mac address of the expanders or the wireless computers? Or any other way to make my little network secure?
I have Windows XP and broadband.
    Thanks.

First of all you need to setup your router, and get your wireless computers working.  Then later, we can work on the range expanders.
To setup WEP security, do the following:
Turn off all your computers, except for one computer that it wired to the WRT54G.
Make sure the computer is wired to one of the numbered ports on the WRT54G, not the Internet port.  Also, make sure the wireless card in the computer is turned off.
In the computer, temporarily turn off your software firewall.
    Point your browser to 192.168.1.1
Enter your user name (if any) and password.
This will take you to the router's setup pages.
Go to the "Wireless" tab, "Basic Wireless Settings" subtab.
Change your SSID to a unique name.  Do not use "linksys".  This is the name of your wireless network, and eventually, you will need to enter it into all your network devices (computers, router, expanders, etc.).
    Set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled".
Write down the "Wireless channel" that you are using, and save the paper.
Click on the "Save Settings" button, then wait (3-60 seconds) for the screen to refresh.
Next go to the "Wireless MAC filter" subtab.
Set the "Wireless MAC filter" to "disabled" for now.  (If you want to use this feature, we will need to come back later to set it up).
If you changed anything on this page, click the "Save Setting" button, and again wait for a screen refresh.
Next go to the "Security" tab, "Wireless Security" subtab.
Set the "Security Mode" to "WEP".
Click the "Save Settings" button, and again wait for a screen refresh.  (Note: the "Save Settings" might not work until you do the rest of the stuff in this paragraph.)
Set the "Default Transmit Key" to "1".
Set the WEP encryption to "64bit 10 hex digits"
Insert your passphrase of 8 to 16 characters (no spaces), then click the "Generate" button.
Copy down "key 1"  (it should be 10 hex digits) on a piece of paper and save it.
Click on the "Save Settings" button, and again wait for a refresh.
    Exit your browser.
Power cycle your modem, router, and computer.
Login to your router again.  Now verify that all of the above settings are still present in the router.  If not, put them in again, and be sure to click on the "Save Settings" button on each page that you update.  After you have your router setup correctly, disconnect the wire between your computer and router, then power cycle your entire system again.
Now, you must setup your computer for wireless.  This setup varies from system to system.  So you may have to try a few things to get it to work.
First, in the computer, temporarily turn off your software firewall.
Next, turn on your wireless card and try to display the available networks in your area.  Look for the network with your SSID.  If you see it, the display will probably also say "encrypted" or "WEP".  Click on your network, then click on "Connect".  The computer will then ask for your password.  At this point, enter your 10 hex digit WEP "key 1", not your WEP password or passphrase.  It should then connect.  If it does connect, verify that you have a properly working wireless Internet connection.
If it does not connect, then go to your wireless settings and look for something called "Preferred Networks" or "Profiles".  In this area, you will be able to enter the info on your network (SSID, WEP, and your "key 1" ).  Also, setup your network as your default network, with automatic login.  You may need to right click on your network and set this up in "Properties" or perhaps in "settings".  Also, while you are here, delete any networks named "linksys", and also delete any other network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.
Once you get one computer working, then setup your other computers for wireless.  Get all your wireless computers working properly first, and verify that they have a properly working wireless Internet connection.
When you have this done, let me know, then we can setup the range expanders.
But you must have a properly working wireless system before you can expand the range.

  • Multiple range expanders in hardwired house

I'm trying to set up a single wifi network in a three story, huge, brick house in downtown Baltimore and can't figure out the best way to do it. I currently have the modem on the first floor and going into an older G router, from there it gives a wifi connection to the first floor and a hard wire connection to all the places we need on all floors. Unfortunately we also can't connect to the wifi on the second and third floor. We are looking for the simplest way to add wifi on the two upper floors. We tried using the wired connection upstairs and a second router but couldn't figure out how to do it. Now we realize we probably need two expanders, repeaters or similar products.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have two Range Expanders so what is the model number of those Range Expander.... Well you have a G - router but what is the model number of that G-Router...
If you have any wired computer, check the IP address that you are getting on the computer from the Router?

    Hi Gilly,
I have no proof, but I think it will not work with an adapter, only Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt.

I have several recuring alarms set up on iCal for each day of the week. In the past few weeks, an alarm will occasionaly notify me roughly 15 minutes to an hour and a half late. These daily alarms are identical and repeat every day and there seems to be no apparent pattern to why or when an alarm happens after the event is past.

I assume you meant iCal rather than iTunes? Yes, iCal the time zone is correct. The delayed alarms only happen sporadically. Since I posted this message, the problem stopped happening every day at the same time, but it still happens occasionally with no rhyme or reason as to when. It's gotten so that I can't depend on my iCal alarms anymore.

If you want to see what is in a file that is backed up by time machine then you have to restore the entire file. Having said that I have had good experience with Time Machine and individual files... if the file is there then all of it's components are almost for sure there. A way to get around this in Aperture would be to use referenced images. The images then still exist as individual files and can be backed up and restored individually. You would have to do so on a file by file basis though and your album information would still only be saved within the Aperture library.

  • "SUMIF requires that all range arguments are the same size."

I just downloaded the Mac app Numbers for the first time today and opened an microsoft excel sheet from my old PC. In every cell where I have a SUMIF function is has an error icon in it. When I click the icon is says, "SUMIF requires that all range arguements are the same size." I tried retyping the function and it did not change. What else can I do to fix this issue? Is SUMIF supported on the Numbers app? Thanks.

    Jace,
Sumif does work in Numbers, all versions. There is just some problem with the import translation of the spreadsheet.
