you can't.  But read this too: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2526.  Also, see if your homeowners insurance may cover it.

  • Someone stole my Macbook Pro...

The week before Christmas, my wife and mother decided to buy me a 13" MBP (MB991LL/A), from Futureshop (a subsidiary of BestBuy). Now my wife bought the MBP on the store credit card, got the card protection and the extended warranty, etc. Basically all the bells and whistles to go along with it.
Two guys followed my wife from the store, punctured the tire on our truck, and followed her. She made it to a gas station where she called me to fix the tire. While she was waiting for me the two guys who followed her from the store and punctured the tire came to the truck window and asked if she needed help and to move to the dark side of the gas station where the air pump was located and they would help her. She did not, and stated that I was coming to fix the tire. Christmas time and traffic it took me about an hour to get there and thirty minutes to fix the tire. Once I fixed the tire, we traded vehicles. My wife took the Christmas presents and the MBP with her and went to the mall. I took the truck to the tire shop to get fixed.
While my wife was at the mall the two guys broke into the van and stole the MacBook Pro, they didn't look at any other presents and gifts in the van, they just looked for the MBP, and took the MBP... So we call the cops, make a report at the mall, talk to the people that are supposed to help, and no one is helping.
WE are out two thousand dollars on the MBP, and are making payments on the card. Even though we have no MBP. We are not rich or well off people to begin with, we just can not easily replace it and go on like nothing happened... The good thing is, nothing happened to my wife, the results could have turned out worse, but they didn't... What is worse than getting something stolen from you before you can bring it home; is that they didn't just steal an Apple MacBook Pro Laptop from us, they stole my wife's Christmas spirit, and that wasn't something she got back, either... Oh ya, and did I mention no one is helping us...

What it really comes down to (and unfortunately so)... the product was stolen from you... so unless you have some type of additional coverage, you're pretty much out of luck. The fact that you are still paying it off really doesn't matter to the credit card company. They made the payment to the company you bought it from. It's not any different than had you paid for it in full and it was stolen.
I'm not sure what contacting the media, news papers, or news stations would accomplish. No one is at fault for not reimbursing you. What you're looking for someone to do is similar to having someone steal $2,000 cash from you and then going to your bank and asking them to replace it.
Don't get me wrong. I'm totally sympathetic to your situation. Unless you had some sort of coverage, you just don't have any recourse. You can certainly try to get some sympathy from the retailer or your credit card company, but neither are really obligated to do anything.
As you mentioned, just be thankful that no one was hurt. People have been killed over far less. It's frustrating for sure... but you're probably just going to get yourself more frustrated by trying to get some type of reimbursement.

  • Someone stole my MacBook Pro. I need to find out what the purchase price was and the serial number for the insurance. Any suggestions?

Someone stole my MacBook Pro and I thought maybe I could find out how to get the serial number and purchase price for the insurance carrier. I looked in the community and found finding an iPod with iTunes, but iTunes on my iPad doesn't have preferences, so now I don't know what to do. Can I call someone? Is there really any help. Next time I'm gonna buy from amazon because you can go right on to my order history and have the information right at your finger tips in a matter of minutes instead of getting the run around!

Well, if you don't have a copy of your purchase receipt, then you can find the serial number in your support profile if you registered the machine. As for a copy of your invoice, call the Apple store and ask for a copy.

  • Can anyone help with ways to find my MacBook Pro?

My apartment was robbed and they stole my MacBook Pro. Along with other things I'm out approximately $4,000 in items. Probably the only items i owned worth anything, and the landlord of the studio apartment i live in hasn't even bothered to fix my window that the person broke to come in through. I have my serial number but I don't have find my iPhone set up on the MacBook. Is there any way of tracking it down? Any suggestions would be great. I'm just guessing there's no hope.

There is no way to track it based on what you have stated.
What To Do If Your iDevice Is Lost Or Stolen
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if Wi-Fi is enabled on the device. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

  • Macbook pro for work station with external monitor?

I shoot weddings and need to run cs2 plus other programs and storage for photos.
I read in Macworld where they recc. the Macbook pro instead of a power mac as a work station using a 24" dell. They said the power mac is overkill.
Do you think I would be happy using it in this way?
I would save a bundle in buying another computer.
I do have an older PC now tower that I use..
I also would have to run windows since there are programs that i run on xp that they don't make for the mac.
Maybe I should just stay with a PC for the workstation?

if you meant compared to a powermac (ie, a G5), then the macbook pro is actually on par or faster than those machines. but if you meant the current mac desktop, the mac pro, then indeed that is a significantly more powerful machine.
be warned though.. adobe cs2 is currently not native for any intel mac, MBP or otherwise. so it's going to run much slower than what you'd expect, and much slower than what the machine is really capable of, due to emulation. this will be resolved with cs3, which should be out before the end of the month.
as for your windows apps that don't exist for the mac. before you jump in with the intention of definitely running windows on the MBP, you should take a look around and see if there are any mac programs that can do what you need to do with those apps, even if they aren't exactly the same. this may not be an option for you, but if it is, it's a nicer way to work than to be forced to use up all the extra disk space and system resources and effort, to have a windows install running as well. that said, if you can use these apps through parallels, it can be a pretty seamless way of accessing those apps when you need to.. but you'll chew into your drive space still.
but in principle, what you want to do is definitely achievable. you won't get the most bleedingly fast system that a mac pro desktop would give you.. but as I said, the current MBPs are right up there with the power of the G5 macs, in many cases faster, so it's definitely desktop class performance even if not in the same league as the mac pro. photoshop will annoy you if you try to run the non native version though.. so make sure you get the intel version (ie cs3) as soon as it comes out. all in all, together with a nice large 2nd monitor (and prob a good external drive too) it'll make for a great working setup.
I'd also get a wireless keyboard and mouse, and a stand to put the MBP on, so it sits at monitor height and you can just work as if it were a desktop machine. that's what I do, and it's great.

  • I need to upgrade my Mac, is there anyway I can swap my 4 month old Macbook Pro for a iMac or something with a bit more kick? (for video editing)

I would ideally like to upgrade to a new model iMac, as they and my Macbook Pro 15inch, only 4 months old go for about the same price.
Is there any way I can do this through Apple or would I have to go about it in another way. I would like to minimise spending and ideally would not like to buy a completely new computer. What I'm asking, really, is if I can trade the two?

No you cannot trade in. Sell you MBP on eBay for the best value. The best 'bang for your buck' currently offered directly from Apple is their certified refurbished machines:

  • Should I get a £999 13 Inch Macbook Air with 128 GB SSD or a £1249 13 Inch Retina Macbook Pro with 128GB SSD

I am a twelve year old boy ready to get my first Mac computer. I already have an iPad 3 and I really like it. Now I'm going to start saving up for a Mac and I am down to two choices, as listed above. I'm going to be using it for web browsing, games, drawing, word documents, presentations, movies, video calling, messages, Windows 8 and I will be using quite a few apps from the Mac App Store.
Also could you tell me how long Apple support the MacBook Air with the latest version of OS X and how long they support the MacBook Pro with the latest OS.
I also want to know if it is worth paying £200 to upgrade a 128GB SSD to a 256GB one.

If past history serves, Apple will support the 2013 models for 5-7 years with new OS upgrades but there's no guarantee. However that doesn't mean the computer will be worthless. I have a 10-11 year old Mac serving as a guest computer running an OS two versions old. It still does everything our guests would want to do while they are visiting.
The 128GB drive is the smallest I'd recommend and for a teen (who is likely to collect media and lots of software) I'd call the 256GB a very good idea - especially ince you indicate you want to run Win8 too.
The retina MacBook has a gorgeous display and has a faster processor but all those extra pixels push the GPU to the max. Until faster GPUs come along I'm avoiding the retina computers.

  • What is absolute max ram for a macbook pro 2,16 core 2 duo processor?

Hello guys, thanks for reading this post.
i read so many people saying that my 2007 mbp only going to max at 3GB if i put 2x 2Gb ram
i look up on apple store memory, my processor doesnt show as choices
i then look up on OWC website, and they show my macbook pro 2,16 core 2 duo is in fact a "model identifier" macbookpro2,2
which made me viable to get full 4GB.
just to be sure, my macbook pro serial number is
    W87****W0G
and this macbook pro now has 2x 1GB ram pc2-5300
i saw people selling pc2-5300 on cglist, but they look so long and different from the shorter and taller one on apple and owc website.
so i am a bit confused, isnt this pc2-5300 not the same thing for all pc/mac? the one on cglist was made from hp, so i didnt contact the seller.
well, i am running mac osx lion now
will be plugging lacie expresscard usb 3
and will be using aperture 3 (which req lion to use so i cant downgrade os)
and i had few issues of screen occasionally flickering, does that mean i need more Ram??
sorry, i go a bit off topic here.
thanks for all you who keep reading and hopefully have a bit to say back to me.
    cheers
    Vito

    update:
after the information i posted above
i checked again my memory use in the activity monitor
and its true, only 3Gb is being used even the about this computer info says 4Gb.
thus, i returned the one 2Gb card and use one 1Gb from old one.
it made exactly same effect, nothing different.
i thought i just made this post so anybody have same issue later would know

  • Upgrade apple Macbook pro with retina

Hi, i alredy know that the ram and the flash storage are soldered to the board in the new macbook pro with retina display but i just wondering if i go to an apple store could they send my macbook pro to apple and upgrade the ram and the flash storage and then send me back??? I alredy bought it an it cost me a lot but now i have the money to upgrade the ram and flash storage can i do it that way??

I'd rather suggest: Call Apple or take an appointment and walk into he store. They can't just turn you back. Apple can give you an upgrade even though the RAM in soldered in. They do it for the iPad all the time, tap hey simply take your unit and give you anothe and you pay e difference. They use stock that is different from the retail packages nd may run out from time to time but I don't believe you are stock with it. At the worst, you may pays bit more than the initial upgrade cost and be sure to backup before you go.

  • Macbook Pro 13- Back to school offer 2011?

I have been holding out on purchasing the Macbook Pro 13 2011 model for while now due to
    New OS
    Back to school offer?
Wondering if anyone would know if Apple are doing the back to school offer this year as sure last years was around May but nothing has been mentoned so far?
Also by holding out I would be getting the new OS on the laptops already- any ideas when this is released as really want a Macbook Pro already first MAC purchase for me exciting times

I would want to wait 6 months after any new OS to be 'field tested.' Tried and true and mature with the bugs worked out makes 10.6.7+ look good investment rather than bleeding edge.
With Apple you can't install an older build version of the OS than what it ships with so if there are any issues which there always are with an OS.
No one knows future product dates and terms (and couldn't say anyway).
If you want to talk to MacBook Pro owners they are on
    MacBook Pro
Spec-wise the 2011 MBP looks very good.

  • Migration - swapping files & settings between TWO macbook pros?????

    hi everyone,
i am going to trade laptops with my wife (13" vs 15"). they are both macbook pros running 10.6.4.
i want to use migration assistant, but everything i've read about it seems like it's meant to install your existing files onto a new (i.e. blank) mac. i haven't seen anything about taking the files from A and putting them onto B, and vice versa. any tips? should i just do this manually using an external HD and forget about migration assistant?

The Migration Assistant can be restricted to transferring single user accounts. Do it with one machine and then reverse the process with the other machine. Ensure that both transferred accounts can log into their new machines and that everything works the same. Once that's finished, delete the original accounts.
