Thin ODBC driver

Hello All,
If a java application wants to talk to Oracle we can use the thin driver for oracle classes12.zip. The best thing about this is that it does not mandate the installation of the Oracle client on the machine from which this is used. just the classes12.zip is sufficient.
Is there something like this for the ODBC database connectivity as well ? a thin ODBC, OLEDB driver ?
Or for OleDb and ODBC type of connections the oracle client installation (500 MB) is neccassary for the client.
thanks a lot for your help. Please do reply.
regards,
Abhishek.

Justin,
Do you represent Oracle or are you an interested third party?I'm just an interested third party. I have worked for Oracle before (in the ODBC group).
Regarding the 40 MB, I set up two "Client Custom Install Response File Templates." The first does a minimal installation. The second is called from the first and was an attempt to add the 8.1.7.4 ODBC driver. As a fortunate side-effect, the second one un-installs a bunch of unnecessary components that the first one installs - things like NET8 and the superfluous JRE.OK. I got the wrong idea from your initial post-- I've dealt with people before that wanted to either roll their own install or to delete "extra" bits from a standard install by hand. These generally caused lots of headaches and didn't work too well. It sounds like you're going through the OUI, so you ought to be pretty safe.
I'm a bit confused by the "fortunate side-effect" comment, however. I cannot understand why installing an updated driver would have a side-effect of deleting anything. Additionally, I strongly doubt that you're actually removing the Net8 client. Net8 is the wire protocol that all the Oracle client API's use to communicate with the database. If you don't have the Net8 client installed, I can pretty much guarantee that nothing will work.
I could make a lot of editorial comments but I think you understand the issues.I haven't dealt with the OUI in 9i, so I'm not sure whether you could set up similiar templates there to reduce the 300 MB footprint. That certainly does seem to be a bit large for a minimum install.

  • How to install ODBC driver minimally

Oracle9i provides ODBC driver download page. the dirver is small, only 2M after installation. However, it does not work unless Oracle Net Client is installed correctly.
The question I want to ask is, what components should I install for the Net Client? or is there any straightforward installation program for ODBC driver?
I just want to make the installed ODBC driver and its dependencies use minimal Hard Disk space.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Unfortunately, that's as small as it gets if you want to have a supported configuration.
If you're really stuck, you may want to investigate third-party ODBC drivers. DataDirect has a "thin" ODBC driver they'd be happy to sell you.

    Absolutely,
Your URL will be different, and will be along the
    lines of:
    for ORACLE...
String url = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@127.0.0.1:1521:sid";['thin' refers to a specific driver that allows you to
not have an oracle instance running on the client
machine... port 1521 is teh default, check for
changes... and 'sid' is your instance name]
    for mySQL...
String url = "jdbc:mysql://127.0.0.1:3306/sid";[you can guess]
There will be a driver either incuded with your DBMS
(you don't say which you have) but u need to either
place it in your classpath (it will be either a zip or
a jar), or unpack it and place it in your
application's codebase (if you plan to jar the whole
app up and deploy it that way), either way you need to
refer to the driver class using the following method
    in the constructor:
    for ORACLE...
    Class.forName ("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");for mySQL...
Class.forName ("org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver");You do not need to instantiate this driver, you are
just telling the context where it is...
then all you need to do is...
    Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(url,
    "user", "password");
    Statement s =
    con.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE,
    ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE);and you are away!
Totally platform independent and no messing around
    with ODBC toss
    good luckHI,
these drivers will be loaded automatically when we install the respective softwares ? or we have to install them explicitly??

    Hello sir..
    thanks for ur reply...
for oracle 10g -----> we use XE as datasourse

now i am using oracle 8i...Not so from the code you posted. Didn't I see "jdbc:odbc:..." in your first post?
    so what should i
    write...in the datasourse name...that means.......
    Connection
    con=DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@loc
alhost:1521:????????","scott","tiger");Do you really use the default username and password?
What should i write in place of ?????????..The name of the database you wish to connect to, of course.
Do you have your tnsnames.ora set up properly? Did you install this database?
None of this has ANYTHING to do with the error you posted, of course. Fix that first and then worry about the thin driver. At least it appears that the code you posted managed to connect to the database.

  • Informix ODBC driver error while creating a view in Designer

I nedd to ceate a view in a universe (Business Objects XI R2) that is connected to an Informix database. I use the 3.34 ODBC Informix driver.
When I write the select statement (select column from table) and check the syntax I have the following error:
"Exception: DBD, [Informix][Informix ODBC Driver][Informix]A syntax error has occurred.State: 42000"
Is there anybody who has solved this problem??
Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me hints on how to solve problem.
    Fabrizio

    Hi Fabrizio,
The error state 42000 indicates that there is a syntax error or access violation. If you are using an Informix native client connection then add the following parameter <Parameter Name>"Force SQLExecute">Always</Parameter> in the informix.sbo file. Restart Designer and then try to create a derived table with a simple select statement.
If you are using an ODBC connection, then add the above mentioned parameter in the Generic section of odbc.sbo file.

  • After Upgrade OBI 10g to 11g:Odbc driver returned an error - SQLExecDirectW

    Hi all,
for an OBI upgrade from 10g to 11g I used a RPD and Webcatalog based on a remote machine other than my local machine. Firstable I am making the tests on a Linux Virtual machine, which uses the Sample Lite version from Oracle.
    I made the following steps:
    1. I upgraded the RPD and Webcatalog. It worked without any errors.
    2. I set the static variable BI_EE_HOME via Administration Tool to the path in the Linux machine.
--> Here I am not sure if the set path is correct. It begins with: \bi\ ...\instances\...\coreapplication_obis1 (... : I can't mention here the whole path name).
--> When the OBI Server is installed in Windows, the mentioned static variable points to something like 'C:\<install folder>\...\coreapplication_obis1'
--> Question: is the begin of my set path correct?. I set that pointing to the Linux OBI Server, because the OBI Server is installed on Linux.
    Problem:
After login as the user in RPD: Administrator/<Password for my upgraded RPD> I can see the links in the Catalog and the Dashboards links. But I can not see any values, any Reports when going through the links.
For example when trying to see a Dashboard with date 12.02.2011it happens:
Odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW).
    Status: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] general error.
[nQSError: 43113] Message returned from OBIS.
    [nQSError: 43119] Query Failed:

    SQL Issued: SELECT "Dimension_-_My Dimension"."MyDimension" saw_0 FROM "Accounting (ACC)" WHERE "Dimension_-_My Dimension"."MyDimension" LIKE 'J%' ORDER BY saw_0
I think its not retrieving the data from the remote database, because I don't have the data of the remote database in my local. I think the OBI Server still is pointing to the local virtual machine Oracle database.
Can anybody tell me what happens here and how can I solve this problem?.
    I would appreciate any help....

    Hi gerardnico,
I've tried many things and did as in your articles, but I don't have success with that.
These are the things I did:
    1. I searched for the file tnsnames.ora in my Linux virtual machine. I could find it in many paths:
    /.../Oracle_BI1/network/admin/samples/tnsnames.ora
    /.../oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/hs/admin/tnsnames.ora.sample
    /.../oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
    /.../oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin/samples/tnsnames.ora
    /.../oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin/temp/tnsnames.ora
    /.../usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin
in the last path I found the listener.ora as well.
    2. I took the tnsnames.ora from the last path, because the ORACLE_HOME points to /.../usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server
    3. I edited the tnsnames.ora this way:
    # tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File:
    XE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = host_of_the_remote_machine)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = database_name_of_the_remote_machine)
    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC_FOR_XE))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = database_SID_of_the_remote_machine)
    (PRESENTATION = RO)
    4. I made a backup of the tnsnames.ora in path /.../Oracle_BI1/network/admin/samples/tnsnames.ora
and copied the tnsnames.ora from /.../usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin to the Oracle_BI1 path
    5. I set the TNS_ADMIN to /.../usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin
    6. I restarted the BI Server
No success in what I did. The error is still there.
    7. I've tried also: sqlplus database_user_remote_machine/database_password_remote_machine@database_SID_remote_machine
    I didn't get the connection:
    SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Thu Jun 16 04:36:10 2011

Did you add a System DSN or a User DSN? If you added a User DSN from your own login, the asp.net application will not be able to use it unless its application Pool in IIS is configured to run under the same credentials that you used for creating
the DSN. It's better if you add a System DSN.
Also, be careful to ensure that you are using a 64 bit DSN, unless you configure the application to run in 32 bits. If the 64 bit application attempts to use the 32 bit driver you get the same error message "Data source name not found and no default
driver specified". See this KB article:

  • Re: 32 Bit ODBC Driver for Oracle 11g 11.2.0.1.0

    Hi,
Were you able to resolve the problem with these troubleshooting measures ?
Please let me know since i am facing similar issues like yours.
I am using a Windows 7 64 bit and from QTP installed on this machine ,  i am trying to connect to Oracle database.
Now initially i installed a 64 bit ODBC for Oracle . But when i did that and ran the Script below :
    Set objDatabase = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
    Set rs=createobject("adodb.recordset")
    objDatabase.open "DRIVER={Oracle in OraClient11g_home1} ; DATA SOURCE=Oracle; SERVER= xyz ; DATABASE=abc1; UID=abc ; PASSWORD= abc123;"
rs.Open "select * from tablename", objDatabase
    'result1 = objDatabase.Execute("select * from tablename")
    'msgbox result1
    Do while not rs.eof
    print rs.fields("columnname")
    rs.movenext
    Loop
    print rs.fields("columnname")
    it gives me an error
“[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] The specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application”
So i am assuming that i need to install the 32 bit ODBC drivers for Oracle as well in addition to the already installed 64 bit drivers ..
    Any thoughts on this ?

64 bit apps need 64 bit Oracle client software.
32 bit apps need 32 bit Oracle client software.
You should be able to tell the bit-ness of the app by checking the Process tab in task manager to see if it has *32 next to it.
You can install both 32 bit and 64 bit Oracle client software on the same box, but you need to do it into different homes, and different oracle_base should also be used.
There isnt an Oracle client install bundle that installs both, you'll need to do each separately.
    Hope it helps,
    Greg

    A few things to note:
    1) Crystal Report 2013 doe snot install any SDK. Thus the assumption is that you are using CR from teh following link:
SAP BusinessObjects - SAP Crystal Reports, Version For Eclipse Download
    2) Since you are using a 64 bit connection (Oracle Client 11g 62 bit ODBC driver) you will have to make sure you are using 64 bit JVM. Otherwise, follow Dell's advice and use a 32 bit ODBC datasource.
    3) On one test you are using Oracle Client 10g 32 bit ODBC driver and the other you are using Oracle Client 11g 64 bit ODBC driver. You might want to see if you can run your app using Client 11g 32 bit ODBC driver.

  • Odbc driver error while OBIEE instal on LINUX tries to access Datawarehouse

    Hi All,
I have installed OBI Apps on a LINUX machine. The ETL too ran successfully. As we can't install BI tool on LINUX I modified the OracleBIAnalyticsApps.rpd file on a Windows machine and copied it back to the LINUX machine. After modifying the NSQConfig.ini file I could see all the OBI Apps answers and Dashboards ie OBI Apps was installed on LINUX.But whwnever I try to access some data from OLAP i get the following error:
Odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW).
    Error Details
    Error Codes: OPR4ONWY:U9IM8TAC:OI2DL65P
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 16023] The ODBC function has returned an error. The database may not be available, or the network may be down. (HY000)
SQL Issued: SELECT Time."Year" FROM "Human Resources - Workforce Profile" ORDER BY 1
Probably this is because all the DSN specified in the rpd file were present on the Windows machine.I don't know how to modify these values for LINUX.Please help.Nothing is mentioned in the install docc as far as LINUX installation is concerned.
    regards,
    Soumya.

I think when your BI Server is running on linux, you would use native drivers to connect to your data warehouse database and not ODBC. If your data warehouse is on a oracle db server, change the call interfact in the RPD connection pool to OCI and give the tnsname for the db server connection in the connection pool.

  • Odbc driver error while connecting with Oracle BI in Linux

I have Oracle BI Server, Presentation Service and Oracle 11g Client installed in RHEL 5. Oracle BI client is installed in Windows so that I can use Admin tool.
I have created a repository in Windows for sh schema(by creating ODBC). After that I transferred this repository to the ..server/repository in the linux server.
I have installed Oracle ODBC Driver from EASYSOFT and added one odbc data source for sh schema in the ../setup/odbc.ini.
My ODBC setting is as follows.
    [ODBC Data Sources]
    sh=Oracle in OraDb11g_home1
    [sh]
    Driver=/usr/local/easysoft/oracle/libesoracle.so
    Database=//ipaddress_of_ORACLE_SERVER:port/database_service_name
    UID=sh
    PWD=sh
When I am trying to query through Oracle Answers I am getting the following error.
Odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW).
(HY000)
SQL Issued: SELECT Customers."Cust First Name" saw_0 FROM SH ORDER BY saw_0
I have enabled tracing, but I am not getting any clue from trace output.
    Can anybody please help.
If it is because of wrong driver, can anybody suggest a proper ODBC Driver for Oracle and how to configure it. If the driver is OK and configuration is wrong, can anybody tell me how to create system dsn in linux?
    Thanking you in advance.

don't use ODBC for Oracle, use OCI
search on the forum, there's plenty of information about it.
