Thin Purple line on screen MBP 15"

Recently a thin purple line appeared the right side of my 15" macbook pro screen. The Line goes from the top of the screen all the way to the bottom......I purchased my Macbook pro about a year ago brand new. Has anyone else heard of this problem? I tired to take a screen grab and it doesn't appear in the screen grab picture

hi, all
your graphical probleme have got a good case in France, difficult for me to translate it, but It was solved, and Apple have changed the faulty material
in another way, but there is a few lucks that it came from it, according to your symptoms:
check if your graphic card is a ATI radeon X 1600
if yes, check the others discussions about it here, and also, use smcfancontrol to speed up your fans until the temperature goes under 65 ° C .
look if you have the same lines... run extensive graphicals programs, check temperature, prevent it to go above 65 /69 °
wait a bit
now, reset smcfancontrols to default, but don't leave it, to be abble to watch the temperature and do the same activity
if your line come again, you have quite an answer..

  • Thin Horizontal Line Across Screen

I've had them before and they disappeared spontaneosly. The latest one seems to want to hang around. Any idea how to get rid of it?

This is a followup to my post earlier today. A web search on "Thin Horizontal Line Across Screen" turned up this article:
    http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/post24947-5.html
Sure enough, my horizontal line came back. I decided to follow the advice in the linked article. I didn't even have to twist the monitor. I barely tapped the screen as I was reaching up to twist the panel, and the line disappeared. This suggests to me that the problem is a loose internal connection between the driver circuitry and the panel.

  • When I click on thin purple line in the timeline nothing happens.

In Final Cut Pro 7 when I try to click on the thin purple line in the zoom scrubber control in the timeline nothing happens.  I thought it was supposed to return me to where I had last been.
Any hekp or suggestions would be most helpful.  Thanks

That issue is listed as a known problem with the Google Toolbar, so I assume that Google needs to fix this in an update.

  • Toshiba Satellite U400 - Purple lines on screen

Hi, I have had my laptop for about 2 years now and recently I have noticed that when the screen is dark coloured (like a black background or dark background) purple fuzzy horizontal lines appear on the very top of the screen. Like the top 2 millimeters of the screen.
I also noticed that when i put pressure on the area around the touch pad the whole screen starts to glitch out and go spastic. Like purple lines everywhere. Especially around the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
If I set the background to white the lines disappear however and the affects of putting pressure on the area around the touch pad are far less noticeable (if at all, I have to test this more)
Also when I plug in an external monitor (VGA) there are no problems on the external screen.
So my question is, has anyone experienced something similar and also would this be a software or hardware problem? And what steps should I take now?
    Thanks

Sounds like a hardware problem. If the screen garbles when the base is pushed, then the graphics chip is probably faulty. An ASP can quote you a new Mainboard.

  • Picture Included. Mid 2012 13 inch Macbook Pro green/purple lines on screen. Freezes. Sometimes 3 beeps.

Alright I have a Mid 2012 13 inch Macbook Pro purchased in June 2012. For about the last month, I have this issue where as I am using it random colored lines will show up on the screen (lines usually green, purple, but occasionally the issue occurs while booting and lines are black on white background). As soon as the lines appear, everything freezes. Sometimes the computer automatically reboots. Other times, it will just turn off and start beeping 3 times in a row. AT first, I thought this may be a video card error because it happened a lot when I was watching videos. However, it also happens randomly when I am just using safari/chrome with no other programs runnings. The most annoying part of this issue is that it is completely random. Computer won't act up for maybe 2 days straight during all activities (videos, surfing the web, etc). Then I will have a day where the problem is consistent.
Also, although I think this is just a correlation, all problems started after upgrading to Yosemite.
    Picture below:
Does anyone else with a Macbook Pro (especially 2012) have this issue? These two discussions seem to be describing this very situation:
Screen froze, purple lines, three beeps. Help!
Macbook Pro screen glitches, 3 beeps, NOT THE RAM

thanks alex. I'm going to the genius bar later this week for them to get a look at the issue.
in the meantime, do you have any idea why the problem occurs when I apply a little pressure to the bottom of the computer (under the command screen). here is a video of the situation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88C34bHZAd8&feature=youtu.be
also, i found this thread describing my exact situation: Field of vertical lines all over Macbook Pro screen? (+ freezes, beeps)
do you have any idea of a solution from reading that?

  • Thin vertical lines on screen

    Hi,
I have a 3 year old G4 laptop. I now have 4 thin vertical lines appearing on my screen. The number of lines has slowly expanded in the last 4 months. I took my laptop to the genius bar and they told me that this is simply light pixels burning out and they could fix it but it would cost over $300.
Do all Mac computers have this problem after 3 years or so? Is there an alternate solution to the problem?
    Mike
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Michael,
Three years ... it varies. Besides BDAqua's suggestion, you might try looking for an Apple reseller, here's the link for that: Apple Retail and Resellers

  • Thin white line in screen

    Hey everyone,
I've scouted this forum to find people with a similar problem who may be able to help me out.
Im the (still proud) owner of a Lumia 820. I've had it for about 6 weeks. I'm pretty statisfied with it were it not that sometimes the screen freezes and I have to give the phone a 'hard reset' by removing the battery. This happened about 4 times. The first 3 times there was no problem, phone rebooted; problem solved.
The last time I did this the phone did reboot but with a thin verticle white (it seems to change colour with the background) line through the screen.
There is no damage to the screen (at least not the top layer), also the touch function seems to work fine. It seems that the problem is 'deeper' in the screen layers. Like I said, I didn't drop it or anything so I have no idea how it got there. Could I get rid of this by updating firmware/software? Or is the screen really broken and if so do you think I could get it fixed?
thank you so much for your help.
I've only had the phone for 6 weeks and even though its not a big problem (I COULD live with it), the phone is only 6 weeks old ...

  • Thin black line across screen

My 5th generation Ipod classic has, in the last year, developed a think black line across the center of the screen that is always there. Is this a "dead pixel" area that has developed? Is there any way to repair this that isn't costly?

This is a fairly common problem and I believe the only solution is to replace the screen or simply live with it. My daughter's old ipod does the same thing. You will notice that the lines only show up when the backlight it on, right?

  • Thin purple vertical line appears on my Mac Pro screen

A few days ago I started getting a thin purple line running vertically on my Mac Pro Screen. It comes and goes.

It is probably a hardware fault. Make and appointment with your Apple Store to have it checked.

  • Purple Line on my iMac Screen

Hi, i got a serious problem and i need help.
Sometimes when i'm using my mac, it appears a very thin purple line! And in a randomly space of time it disapears. My first thought was like "OMG! Calm down... maybe that's broken pixels." So i used a widget called PIXEL FIX to fix the pixels, but nothing happened. When i put to sleep the line disapears for like 2 seconds.
When i was writing this thread there was no line, and then the line appeared again.
    I hope you understanded.

Actually, TechTool (and similar products) is not a good way to test RAM properly. If an error is reported it likely does have an error yes, but if no error is reported it doesn't necessarily mean anything. RAM has been the cause of stranger issues and I have seen RAM causing this very issue many times. Other strong candidates are the main logic board, video card, LVDS cable, a loose LVDS cable or the LCD panel itself.
Basic steps like resetting PRAM can help all manner of issues and is nearly always a good place to start. While it may not fix the issue, it may well fix the issue which leads to the issue you are actually noticing. I'm not saying it isn't an LCD panel issue, it may well be, but it might not be; leave that to a qualified technician to determine scientifically.
I am sorry you and many others have had bad experiences in this area, but it's never as wide-spread as it appears to be. No one is taking advantage by not providing a free fix for a machine that is out of warranty, or for not repairing an issue not covered by warranty. Similarly, if the issue is not re-create-able in the repair centre you can't expect a technician to fix it.
Finally I would like to say that calling people an idiot for purchasing an "Apple LCD" is just ludicrous. Not only is it completely irrational, but Apple don't even manufacture the LCD panels they use.

I bought Lion from App Store recently and installed it successfully on my MBP. After few days when I left my machine running Lion from morning till evening I see a thin green line on the left side of the screen. I tried searching the web and tried few options like restarting the machine, resetting NVRAM and doing Apple hardware test (By pressing D while the machine boots). The Apple hardware test did not detect any problem. The green line still exists.
Please suggest me how to get rid of green line.

    Hi Brent,
I took it to apple service center. They did some checks and found out that the display has gone bad and they replced it with new one.
Did you try connecting other display (may be Apple Display or Dell monitor) using an adapter?  In my case the Apple service center people tried doing it and the display was appearing just fine without any green line. So the fault was in my MBP display.

  • Thin vertical colored line down screen of 21 inch mac version 10.6.8

I have a thin line down screen, green at top and bottom and purple through middle.

    Hello,
    common enough problem.
Take a screen shot & view that in Preview, move the Preview window around, if you see 2 green lines it a Video card/VRAM problem, if the line does not move moving the pic around then it's the LCD or the internal cable.

  • I have very thin, colored lines running vertical on my desktop monitor screen.  I don't know where they come from or how to get rid of them.  I started with one and now have three.  Can anyone give me some insight about what to do in getting rid of them?

I have very thin, colored lines that have shown up on my IMac monitor screen.  I don't know where they came from or how to get rid of them.  I'm concerned now because I started with one and now have three.  Does any know why this occurs or how to get rid of them?

I got an address from Applecare, although I can't place my hand on it right now. I didn't bother persuing the letter route myself as I didn't expect much. I know that the location was Cork, Ireland though as that where the UK Applecare is based as far as I'm aware. The best thing to do is to call Applecare (if it's free) and discuss the issue. State that you are not happy wit the fact that you will have to pay to have the problem resolved especiiay if it is an ongoing problem that has not been resolved. I ended up speaking to a senior manager of the Applecare team who then proceeded to tell me about mailing in my grievence to customer services division or something like that.
If I can find the address I may post it if I'm allowed.
In the case of age, Schools usually have a 5-year life-cycle as they tend to be used differently than consumer machines, i.e. being used constantly on a daily basis for at least 12 hours with no break. you would expect issues to appear after a few years, but I expect problems that arise through defects to be resolved and stay resolved. As I mentioned we had machines for around 2 years before the lines appeared and sent them to be repaired. I'm happy with that. What I am unhappy about is the fact that the problem has reappeared exactly in the same way and now I'm left with around 7 machines that I either pay loads to repair or, the more likely replace the machines with newer ones since the age is now big enough to warrant the replacement.
Sorry for the lengthy moan, but these are the reasons I purchased Apple ahrdware in the first place to avoid the "not our problem" stance some PC vendors  usually take, similar to the Dell monitors thread mentioned in here somewhere.

  • I just jazzed up my 2 Ghz iMac with 10.6.8, and 4 gigs of memory. I'm VERY happy with the results (fast!), but now I have a thin yellow line way over on the right side of the screen, which goes from top to bottom. This is really strange! Any input?

I'm VERY happy with the results (fast!). However, the really strange thing is this - there is now a thin yellow line, way over on the right side of the screen, which goes from top to bottom, and stays there no matter where I go or what I do. I've never seen anything like this! It was not there before I did the upgrades. Anyone out there ever heard of such a preposterous thing ~ or have any ideas on how to get rid of it?

    Hello Mark,
It's going to mean a lot of reading but you should study the 'More like this' legend to your post's immediate right.  >>>>>>>>   plus some of the links within each.
The problem is well explored with much guidance on what to do and where to go.

  • My MacPro 10.6.8 has a thin green line on the screen.

My MacPro is just over a year old now and I have a thin green line on the screen. I hooked it up to my TV and on the second window (the TV) the green line wasn't there. Whats the issue? How do I fix it?

From what you are saying, sounds like a line of pixels out on the display.
Did the TV use the same connector on the computer? If not, swap the display with the TV. If you still have the line, it is one of the items that you swapped across.
Have you tried connecting the display to another computer? If so, is the line still there?
What kind of display is it? Can you swap the data cable and try a different cable, could be a cable issue.
Any adapters in use? If so, try swapping those to rule them out as a problem.
