Things just work better in 10.6.6

I have been playing with both Lion and SL 10.6.6 for some time now and have come to the conclusion things just work better in 10.6.6 and I can prove it. (well at least to me)
I now have iCloud working for iCal and Mail and Notes in 10.6.6.
This actually started with Safari. I tried to log into my ISP to view my usage statistics and Safari simply wouldn't do it. It just sat there doing nothing. Yet in 10.6.6 Safari went in and worked well. I saw what I wanted and all was fine. Safari also kept failing on a number of sites in Lion but would work on SL. I read about others moving back to SL so I thought I'd try myself to see the difference.
I have started testing everything else and found longer battery life on 10.6.6. Less watts, faster searches, quicker connections, less cpu, less RAM.
So I ask the question what in heavens name did Apple do in the writing of Lion to cause such a drop in performance just to add a few extra features??? Was it really worth it?

In particular, I hate how I get the spinning Pause pinwheel whenever I bring up a Find window, as it tries to list every single file (before I enter the search criteria to narrow the search). How do I get it to not list anything in that window until I tell it what to search for?

If you have a backup, it is very easy to revert back to your previous system setup.
If you don't, then the downgrade is much harder to accomplish as it require a complete clean install of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Before going down that laborious road! maybe you tell us what issues you are having.

There are lower cost or free alternatives to MS Office.
IWork is very good and converts Word files easily. If you only need Numbers or Pages, you can purchase them seperately. There is also Neo-Office and OpenOffice.

  • Kernel IO schedulers: noop works better... why?

I've noticed that the CFQ scheduler sometimes doesn't seem to work very well, e.g. responsiveness visibly suffers when there's a lot of disk I/O going on. Deadline seems to be a little better under those conditions, but not much.
I'd avoided using the noop scheduler, of course, because it would make the disk do more work... Right?
But today I saw this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/381300 And lo and behold, when I tried the noop scheduler on my netbook, it made things much more responsive under load.
Suffice to say I'm kind of stumped. I can't think of any good reason why a scheduler that does nothing to minimize disk labor should perform better... The only thing that occurs to me is that maybe SATA drives' native command queuing somehow messes with the scheduling, and I'm not altogether sure that idea makes sense.
Is this just some strange quirk of my netbook's hardware, or is there a good reason for noop to work better on desktops?
Edit: Hmm, I'm noticing lower CPU use by tasks that use a lot of disk I/O. Maybe that has something to do with it?

None, I would say. What we're interested in is how responsive a system is during heavy i/o. It's hard to benchmark that, mainly because it's very subjective.
Jackd + heavy i/o (maybe iozone) + interacting with the DE might be a good testing candidate
based on the number xruns, interactivity with the desktop, how applications run, etc. ~ that's how i used to tune/optimize non-rt kernels to perform like RT, when my hardware on a particular machine wasn't supported very well (by RT). - i am still able to have zero xruns, and use that crappy laptop (which now lives in a rackmount, and runs 2.6.37-zen) as a musical instrument (actually, several -> synths/samplers/sooperlooper).
i'll probably do a test like that over here, but this new machine has only been running a few days, and i haven't even touched the proaudio side of things yet, hell i haven't even installed VMware, or any of my VMs (for work) yet. lazy man! lol.
EDIT: and while i totally agree it is subjective for this type of benchmark, what isn't that subjective is how many xruns i would be getting vs. how well each scheduler benchmarked (in iozone) ... as that is number crunching. the only part of the mix that is subjective is observation, but enough repeated tests, even through observation (including, the numbers) will yield a winner (on my machine anyway).

They installed a new master socket etc when they put the modem in. There is no phone plugged into the master but there are 3 phones AFTER the master socket (extension terminals inside socket, after filter I guess) . I think they tried it with all those disconnected. As for the signal, I mean the DSL light takes ages to actually come on and sync. I don't use wireless here. I have a long Cat5e cable from modem to bt hub then 2 computers and a CCTV box coming off the hub via LAN.
Property is a farmhouse on unmade track with no other properties nearby served by the phone wires. We are approx 1000m from the main road. I think if they could connect the wires into the cabinet at and of my track they might get the claimed speeds. I did a test using a known phone number of a house near that cabinet and it came back as 64mbps quoted , so theres obviously fibre in that cabinet.
One more thing, there is currently broadband on another line in the same cable coming up my track, which is on my business line, I have kept this running but when infinity working better it can be cut off. I wonder if there could be any interference from one pair of wires to the other having 2 broadband signals travelleing 1000m together. Probably not but just trying to think of everything.

  • HT5287 If DVD Movies, Audio CD's and even burning CD and DVD's are not supported, what is the point of DVD & CD Sharing then? Wouldn't it just be better to remote in or use a thumb drive if it's only able to be used for data transfer?

Or am I missing the bigger picture?

As long as you have a Superdrive or an external burner/drive, burning, watching, installing, etc. from CD or DVD will work just fine. And so will sharing.

  • Webpages won't load & seem to be redirected to Yahoo Search keep getting Yahoo 404 message. Works better on IE but some similar problems. I have Windows Vista

Webpages won't load correctly all the time. Sometimes I am entering the web address in the browser 4 or 5 times before it will go to the correct page. It seems to be redirecting to a Yahoo Search that gives a Yahoo 404 in the tab. (I don't know what this means.) My laptop works better on IE, but still has same issues just not as frequently. I have Windows Vista. Also, Yahoo Mail and Facebook is coming up in super large print and no pictures.

I have this very same issue and it is driving me insane.
Trying to go to Youtube or imageshack or even google.com it tends to redirect repletively to a yahoo 404 page!
It was real bad a few weeks ago. I was watching a live stream for a charity event and the page kept refreshing on it's own to a yahoo 404 page! I was ON THE PAGE watching the stream, but that very page kept refreshing to a 404.
I'm also doing job hunts and get this a lot! Try and send in an application? I have to fight with yahoo to let it go through!

  • Dolby Digital Audo Setting -- Need a setting that just works!

Can anyone provide info about the dolby digital (DD) AUTO setting - and what it is supposed to accomplish?
Auto (the default) limits output to stereo via HDMI, and 2 channel PCM via the optical output. That just doesn't seem like much of an "automatic" setting to me.
When set ON - content encoded with DD does get properly sent out the optical cable but at the expense of the stereo feed to the HDMI port. And, this can be really confusing to a casual or novice user, especially if the user had been watching content with just the TV speakers active. If a new movie with DD encoding starts, the user gets no audio at all. And there are times when audio output from the TV is fine, and the power from the audio receiver is not needed.
I believe Apple should enable the stereo feed via HDMI - AND - output a digital feed via the optical cable. It doesn't matter if this is the ON or the AUTO setting, but one of these should "just work".
I'm really not looking forward to having to toggle this setting depending on the content I'm viewing.
I'd appreciate any helpful info - words of wisdom - even blank stares!
    Thanks in advance
    JD

Ok I think I understand how it works now. Auto won't send 5.1 if one of the components connected (like a TV) does not support 5.1. So for instance if you connect your HDTV with HDMI and use optical to a 5.1 receiver, you'll get stereo on both because the TV does not support 5.1. Auto on the Apple TV basically uses the lowest common denominator that allows both to output the same thing at the same time.
However, if you switch it to On in that setup, only the optical cable will get sound and it will be in 5.1 because it's the only output connected to a 5.1 capable device, your receiver.
However, the optimal connection method is to just connect your Apple TV with HDMI directly to a receiver with HDMI inputs. That way, Auto allows the 5.1 sound over the HDMI cable to your receiver and the receiver sends the video to the TV over its HDMI output cable.

  • ICloud video sharing deadly slow, or "it doesn't just work"

I uploaded some photos and videos using iPhoto 9.5 on Maverick.
I can see the photos uploaded to iCloud in a few minutes
but the videos takes tremendous time (1~2 days per one movie) or just doesn't show up forever.
    (video codec : 960 x 540 mp4 H.264, about 3 minutes long)
is this because I'm in China? (cause the iCloud servers are all in US?)
or is this kind of Great Firewall thing?
or is this just because the iCloud service is not so stable yet?
I really like the concept of iCloud, and really hope that it just work without worrying all these things....

I didn't post this as a question. It is just a comment out of frustration. I was trying to make a point that Apple markets iChat heavily and then here we are, a bunch of relatively saavy computer people, and we have problem after problem after problem with no less than half a dozen solutions that may or may not work. And if they do work, there is no guarantee they will continue to work, especially if you upgrade your system. And for the average person, there is no way they are going to know how to configure port forwarding, turn off DHCP, experiment with DMZ, etc.
At the very least, Apple could make a self-diagnosing product that would tell you what ports are not going through and give you a hint of a solution. If the ipod was this bad there would be class-action suits all over the place. Apple simply doesn't care and/or recognize the problem while shamelessly using it to sell computers.
All of that being said - Ralph, users like me (and Apple!) owe you a lot of gratitude for your countless hours of support in this forum.

  • If Macs "just work"...what's with all the posts??

I've been thinking of making the switch to a 24inch imac...I've been doing alot of research and stumbled across the forums here. I gotta say I was pretty shocked to see the amount of issues people are having and also the amount of people viewing some of these problems. I'm by no means naive enough to think that ALL Macs are perfect and I realize this forum only represents a portion of Mac users, but its making me a little hesitent. I'd hate to spend all that money and end up with a great looking machine that doesn't work...if that were the case, would'nt I just get another PC? Should I be worried about making the switch??
    Thanks in advance

Coming here to get an opinion about issues people are having with their Macs is kind of like going to a hospital to concluding that the entire human race is sick.
I have been using Macs a long time and have also am using a Dell PC and have used some other PC"s in the past. I have to say that the Mac operating system just seems to not get in my way as much as Windows, which is what most PC's use. I have also, based on my experiences and not on any empirical data, found that it seems to be much easier for the end user to troubleshoot problems on a Mac, compared to a PC. The Macs do seem to "just work".
I don't know of anyone who has made the switch and regretted it, but I guess it could and probably has happened.
Think about the type of things you do with your computer and the software you use and like and then make sure that whichever type you choose, it meets your needs.
Where I work I have both a Mac and a PC. I have to have the PC to do two things. First to run my security cameras. I could not find a Mac program that would do what I want with the cameras. Second, to run our fueling system. There simply was no Mac equivalent for that function. I do everything else, databases, spreadsheets, etc. on my Mac.

  • What are the chances of this thing actually working?

Hey there, over the next few sentences you'll probably be thinking I'm a hobo or something but whatever. I found an iPhone on the footpath today and it was kinda wet from inside. When I got it home and took it apart to see how much water was inside, there wasn't that much, a bit damp though. My dad dried it off with a blow dryer (Yeah I know, he isn't great with electronics) and cracked the screen right between the middle trying to open it up. I chargered it a little and I could faintly see the Apple logo. The screen went black shortly after and I couldn't do anything. Sometimes I can see something that looks like a USB plug but it was hard to tell. Any of the computers with iTunes in my house don't recognize the phone. The screen might turn into the Matrix's code (you know, all the green numbers lined up?) if you looked at it from real far and had sunglasses on.
I think it's an Iphone 3G, so what are the chances of this thing actually working? Is it completely busted, would it be worth taking it to get repaired, selling it for spare parts or just throwing the thing away?

It doesn't belong to you. Turn it in to the police.

I don't see any DDR3L on the page for the RAM that would fit your model -> http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_133 3MHz_SDRAM.
But the answer is that it doesn't really matter - just make certain to get 1333MHz.

Why does iMessages does not work properly ? Please help me ! Its works better with the previous version if compared with the latest iOS

Many, many thanks for both of you Todd and Rick.
    to Rick:
I suppose you mean the Color Settings in Project Settings as follows:
    - Working Space: None
    - Match Legacy ... Gamma Adjustments checked ON
But it does not correct the colors in effects. And checking or unchecking Make Movie/Output Module Settings/Color Management/Profile/Preserve RGB does not make any difference.
    to both of you:
Those parts of the video image that does not have color effects are just fine. In these parts the color is preserved when reimporting to FCP. However, those parts having color effects (except Levels, as decribed earlier) have altered color results. So, only the parts having effects affecting color are misinterpreted in the image area. The mismatch is of course seen in AE, before making the movie.
What I ment with "Color Management not working properly" is that (instead of "disabling" it) Color Management does not seem to be able to correct this "misinterpretation" or difference in effect handling between AE 6 and 10.
So, would you have any solution for this problem?
Again, many thanks for your fast replies!
