Things that go under radar of CPU usage meters

For example, when I compile a new kernel, the cpu runs at 100% usage, but top conky process is some unrelated process using just several %.
The same goes for vmware machines running heavy processes inside the guess system.
Why is it so and is there a way to get those things shown in cpu usage tables?

Its not due to the .NET API. The knowledgebase is for all DAQmx based APIs in general...So you should see the same behaviour in labVIEW or in CVI or C++(other APIs that use DAQmx). In fact i believe that the KB i linked to was initially a labVIEW KB...
I haven't tried this in the test panels yet, but i will let you know what i find out..
From your reply above, you mentioned that "One thing is certain, you will never know if your application is getting too many resources unless your acquisitions failled! " , does that mean that you are getting an exception of some sort and not getting a message? or getting one too late ? or not getting one at all ?

  • IOS 4.x camera high cpu usage bug

Ever since upgrading to iOS 4, I've noticed that periodically my 3GS's CPU usage is higher than normal. Instead of 97% of the CPU or higher being idle, only 85% is higher. This causes the battery to drain at about the same rate as if I'm constantly playing music, so the phone won't last the day. This problem persists under iOS 4.1. The CPU usage can be seen by any number of free apps in the App store, simply search for CPU.
Using an app that uses the location services or turning airplane mode on and off will temporarily drop the CPU back to the normal idle rates, but the problem will return within a few minutes. The only permanent fix is to reboot the phone.
For the longest time I thought it was related to using location services, but I've finally tracked down the problem to using the camera. If any app uses the camera (camera app or 3rd party app), the problem has a high probability of occurring within the next few minutes. If I never use the camera, the problem never occurs. I've pretty much confirmed this by having weeks go by without seeing the issue, then immediately seeing the issue after using an app that enables the camera (such as a bar code reader).
I've reported this to Apple a number of times and they keep either ignoring it or asking my for log files over and over again. Either they can't reproduce it or they're not even trying to reproduce it. Considering how easy it is to reproduce and the fact that I've seen someone post in the battery life thread reporting the same exact thing, the later seems more likely.

Assume you've read threads on draining batteries and random shutdowns. You may be on to something.
My 3GS shuts down now randomly but usually once the battery hits about 30%...the part that sets it off every single time is opening any app that uses the camera!
Once this happens it won't usually come back on without power tethered.
Would love to see Aplle acknowledge this issue and put to rest all the moronic responses on here telling people to stop using their phones as they have been for the last year and turn everything off to save battery.

  • High CPU usage (more than 100%) while running video applications

    Hello everyone,
I desperately need help with this.
    I have a late 2007 White Macbook running Mac OS X 10.6.8 :
    Model Name:          MacBook
      Model Identifier:          MacBook2,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          3 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz
The issue that I am having is, whenever I play a video (Netflix/Silverlight player, YouTube, Skype, etc.) the CPU usage shoots up above 100% and the video or the video chat becomes VERY choppy. It becomes impossible to keep going once that starts. Originally I had 1Gb RAM (512 + 512) ... then I upgraded to (1GB + 512mb) ... it was fine for about a year and then started chocking on memory... so recently I made it (1GB +2GB) and that's when this high CPU  usage thing started (according to my knowledge)
I have had this machine since last 4 years and its very dear to me. I dont wanna buy a new one. I will really appreciate if someone could help.

I am spending sleepless nights, researching for a fix. From what I found so far, a considerable amount of people were able to fix this issue by simple cleaning the insides of their machines using air dusters, especially the fans. I don't know how cleaning would help with CPU utilization, but by interpolation, I feel it's worth a try. At least it will be clean, if not perfectly functional. lol
Now the next big challenge ahead of me is getting the screws on my Macbook open. I was following the Fan Repair Guide on ifixit.com. I went and got the #00 Phillips screwdriver as suggested in the guide... came home and found out the screwdriver is too big.... went back got a #0000 Phillips (I also found out that screwdrivers with same number might be of different sizes in different stores)... got a couple of screws out and then--- another road-block!! there are a few extremely tiny Phillips screws on my macbook. Now I am hunting for the smallest Phillips screwdriver in the world. Hopefully, I will find it in some watch repair or eye-glasses repair kit in a store such as CVS or Walgreens... aaaah... this is sooo frustrating!!! I just want to get his done so that I can check it off the list of probable solutions that I want to try. Will update here if this works.
From what you say, I think that the Silverlight upgrade might be the culprit in my case too. But the effect is there also for Youtube, Skype , or any other Video/Graphics intensive application that I use. Although, Silverlight/Netflix performs the worst among all the apps.
I love my Macbook... don't want to part with it.

  • Relatively high cpu usage

    Hi,
I have a top level VI with in there  8 tabs. within each tab I have a sub-panel with also VI's running.
Everything works well but I noticed that I have a 23% cpu usage when I run the app.
When I run all vis apart from eachother cpu usage is very low, like 0-1% -monitored in windows task manager-.
I am on win 7 with coreI7 @ 3.5 ghz quad core with hyperthreading.
I have distributed all VIs over several threads -e.g. 'standard' 'data acquisition' etc.
so.... I'd like to know why the prog is using so much cpu and what to do about it.
There are no very fast while loops etc.

  • 10.5.5 - AFP maxes out CPU usage

Since installing the 10.5.5 update on our Intel Xserves, one sharing AFP Home directories will periodically begin to max out its CPU usage, this seems to happen every 2 or 3 days.
Over the space of an hour or two, CPU usage of the AppleFileServer process will increase from floating around 5% - 25% to a solid 400% (it's a Dual, Quad Xeon server so that's one whole CPU).
As an experiment, I manually disconnected all connected users (about 75 connections, 40ish that were not idle). CPU usage remained a steady 400% with 0 client connections.
Issuing a serveradmin stop afp, gives the response 'AFP Status: STOPPED' as it should, but in actually fact the process is still there. Clicking 'Stop' via ServerAdmin.app has no effect either.
The only thing that seems to work is a reboot (currently I have scheduled a 'shutdown -r now' for 1am every day).
Like I said, no problems with AFP prior to 10.5.5.
I hope there is a fix for this in 10.5.6 as it is a major problem.

Same problem here with AFP. Seems to be even worse with 10.5.6. I have two servers with home directories both doing the same thing. Only a restart seems to stop it. We also have SMB, windows users, disconnected on a random basis. Everyone may get disconnected or about 1/2 of them. This happens once or twice a week. If we use server admin to change any ACL's the SMB users also get disconnected. We are looking at switching back to Windows servers. We have had these issues since switching our home directories last summer. We have been working with a local vendor and Apple SE with no resolutions.

  • Tarantella EE 4 - CPU usage goes 80%

    Hi,
i\'ve a secure global desktop 4.0 installed and working fine almost time,
but randomly a single ttaxpe process goes out of control and get
60-70-80% CPU blocking all other activity. I\'ve to kill the process andall come back to normality. This happens about one a day. Is there a fix
    for this problem?

Hi barrie, thank you for your help.
I've got a server with 1.8GB ram; my JVM memory settings was: 58-150%-512.
Now i've changed them to 512-150%-1024. What do you suggest for these
settings considering that i've about 150 webtop session open simultanely?
Either of these settings is probably okay. The whole tuning thing is
less of an issue with the 1.5 JVM anyway. If you only have this number
of sessions I don't think this can be the problem.
By real, the xpe process doesn't block the entire server, but only
tarantella; i still can connect using ssh/telnet and access any other
service, but not to tarantella. This makes more sense but it may mean that the rogue process is keeping
the rest of the system busy or vice versa. Can you access SGD as another
user? The PE manager (ttauxserv) utilises a namespace that is user
based, so it is more likely that the rogue process has deadlocked part of
this namespace making it impossible to log in as the user of that xpe
process. I can think of two ways to get a handle on this rogue process:
    1. gather the ouput of truss (strace on Linux) -- this may show nothing
but that would indicate a tight CPU loop so would be useful info.
    2. generate a core file by sending the process a signal; this would not
produce very useful information unless the binary was unstripped.
Support should be able to provide you with this form of binary; I
can't distribute them via the newsgroup unfortunately.
    >
I try to upgrade a local copy of tarantella 4 to 4.1; the entire process
has gone fine without trouble and i don't lost my settings/object. Do you
suggest to me to upgrade or to leave the 4.0 in out server?
4.0 was a technology change from 3.x, although 4.0 is stable and should
run fine, 4.1 fixes problems that were discovered in the field with the
new webtop infrastructure etc. Since it doesn't radically alter the
footprint of 4.0 I think it is worth having. I can't promise it fixes this
problem though we would need to get more information to work on.

    Thanks again
    Hi Mirko
I don't think 606003 is your problem, that could only occur very rarely,
if at all. It was never reproduced in-house, or shown to be an actualproblem,
but was proved to be a logical flaw in how telnet connections were managed
    internally.
I'm not sure how a protocol engine process, even one consuming an entire
CPU, could manage to stop a server from responding, that doesn't make a
lot of sense as a cause on it's own.
I'm still inclined to think that either this rate of CPU usage is normal
or is a consequence of some other issue. Have you managed to make a
truss file of the system calls made by the ttaxpe process in this state?
I would also check the JVM tuning values you have for this system i.e.
the size of JVM you require. The most common cause of unavailablity,
other than networking problems, is when the JVM in the Jserver fails to
respond because it has grown to a maximum size and is severely
    constrained by the garbage collector.
4.1 is mostly bug fixes to 4.0 so I would not consider it a major change
    to upgrade.

Yes, I'm sure because it stays at about 80% too much time. When this

commands stop respondig (ex. tarantella status never return), who are
alredy logged in a webtop session works very slowly ecc ecc.
In the fix list of 4.1 there is this:
606003 Fixed the problem that causes ttaexecpe to spin in some
    circunstance.
I think it could solve my problem but i'd like not reinstalling/upgrading
my system because i've just upgraded from 3.32 to 4.0.
At the moment, i've written a bash script that every 5 mins check if there
is a ttaxpe pid uses more than 70% cpu and kill it.
    thank you

    Hi Mirko
Are you certain this is not normal behaviour, i.e. the work is being
    driven
by the client application? If you run truss on this process it might
tell us whether it is responding to requests or in some sort of internalspin?
When you say "blocking all other activity", can you be more precise in
saying what you can and can't do?
I would upgrade to 4.1 in any case. There was a similar incident in 4.0
but I can't say whether or not it is anything to do with what you are
    seeing
    with just this information though.
    Thanks

  • High CPU Usage on 3750

    Hi,
I have this 3750 old switch running c3750-ipbase-mz.122-35.SE5.bin (I know it is old...) and it is used for connecting remote offices via 10Mbps circuits. It has been running fine for the last 12-month. But recently, I found the CPU usage is a little bit high, like in screenshot.
I know the average CPU usage is only about 10-20% but it bothers me that it constant has MAX CPU usage around 90+%...I also did show processes cpu sorted and the only thing having 3+% CPU usage is spanning tree...but that won't be enough to cause the CPU peaks... There is no special feature configure on the switch, just VLAN taggings.
Any suggestions on what to check?

Check SDM template if you are overloading the switch.
    show sdm prefer
The current template is "desktop routing" template.
The selected template optimizes the resources in
the switch to support this level of features for
8 routed interfaces and 1024 VLANs.
number of unicast mac addresses:                  3K
number of IPv4 IGMP groups + multicast routes:    1K
number of IPv4 unicast routes:                    11K
        number of directly-connected IPv4 hosts:        3K
number of indirect IPv4 routes:                 8K
number of IPv4 policy based routing aces:         0.5K
number of IPv4/MAC qos aces:                      0.5K
number of IPv4/MAC security aces:                 1K
If the numbers are good then you might want to check the entire LAN and causing temporary STP loops that would kick your CPU utilisation once in a while. Since you have mentioned that you are using this switch for WAN circuits, you may also check the show platform output.
show platform ip unicast failed route
Total of 0 covering fib entries
You should see zero or else that wouldn't be good.

  • Feature request: Monitor, manage IE - CPU usage

I was wondering if this is the right place to make a feature request. As it happens when surfing with IE, having many tabs open, pretty quickly CPU usage can reach 100% even on multi core system. Presumably some website manage to run out-of-control scripts
    in the background.
The real problem is now that I cannot tell which tabs produces which CPU load. All that task manager shows is the IE process with the tabs and the overall CPU usage for the process.
Regarding monitoring it would help to identify the tabs (website) which cause the heavy load. This could be added to task manager.
Further, to manage the tabs it should be possible to either start each tab in its own process
or perhaps better, have the ability to put unused tabs in 'hibernation' causing all scripts to pause there.

    Hi,
you can post 'feature' requests to the IETeam at
    http://connect.microsoft.com/ie
Task Manager in current windows versions lists all IE Tab processes.... Sort the process list by cpu usage to identify hungry tabs.
Typically high cpu usage is caused by
Web browser addons, incorrect browser settings (use gpu instead of hardware rendering) and flash or poorly designed websites or missing updates to your windows or third-party software. You may like to try running your browser in noAddons mode to see if that
makes a difference in cpu usage.... and also ensuring that you have enabled Windows Updates and that your computer has the latest updates from MS, Adobe etc.
MS has no control over what addons a user has or installs on their machines.
Post consumer questions about IE or windows to
http://answers.microsoft.com (Help>Online Support menu). Include with your questions the full links to any websites that you are having issues with....
Always... the first step in troubleshooting web browser issues is to test in no addons mode.

  • Measure Java CPU usage

    Hi,
I'm not sure whether this is the right forum to post this message.
I have a java application and basically it takes lots of CPU time and memory. What my concern right now is the CPU usage. Basically I reduced the number of CPUs from 8 to 4 (Solaris v1280 box) and the CPU usage got increased from 30% to 90% :(
My requirement: Is there anyway that I can measure the CPU usage using Java code itself, so that I can insert those "set of APIs" (for measuring CPU usage), between APIs to collect the CPU usage data?
    Thanks,
    Siva

The comparison would be unfair (by your definition of unfair) in Java, too, since the JVMs for both platforms are different.
If you are dealing with time, though, 500 milliseconds is 500 milliseconds, no matter what language you write it on or what platform you run it on. If you use VC++ for the Windows stuff, make sure you disable Microsoft extensions so you have some ANSI standard code that will compile with gcc.
Since you are trying to compare operating systems, make sure both machines are using the same processors (and motherboards with the same PCI bus architecture), too. And have the same amount of memory, which is the same speed and architecture on both. Their hard drives should be roughly the same speed, too. The PCI bus usage could vary with network cards, so having the same network cards will be a plus. What it seems to come down to is that you are going to end up measuring the performance of the socket library implementations on both machines.
As far as JNI goes, all it is is a way to write native code and use it in your Java application. I don't know much about it, search around for some examples. There's a tutorial, somewhere, too. Some dude on here, tpritchet, seems to know a lot about it.

  • Why is Flash CPU usage so high on my PC?

To other psoters here - Please do not hijack my thread for any other performance issues with Flash other than high CPU usage.
This thread is (hopefully) dedicated to why the CPU usage on my desktop PC jumps when I go to a page with flash 'content'. Thank you!
I am hoping that there is an answer for why my computer is using a very high amount of CPU percentage when I am viewing flash content?
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 on a Gateway GT5432 desktop computer.
I have Shockwave Flash version 11.7.700.169 installed.
I am using Firefox version 20.0.1 (but I have seen same problem of high CPU with Google chrome).
Here is one page that is causing the high CPU usage.
    -   http://logansroadhouse.com/Default.aspx
That page appears to have lots of Flash content.
If I open that logans roadhouse page, my CPU usage goes from an average of 12%, to 80%!
The process I see jump are:
    - Firefox's "plugin-container.exe" goes from 0% to about 50%
    - Firefox browser "firefox.exe" goes from around 8% to 14%
    - Adobe's plugin "FlashPlayerPlugin_11_7_700_169.exe" goes from 0% to 16%
    - TOTAL CPU change from 8% to 80% after opening up just this one page !
When I close the page, the CPU usage goes down again. Open again - CPU goes high again.
Also if I go to the firefox addons page and DISABLE the SHOCKWAVE FLASH plugin, then go to that Logans Roadhouse page, very little of the content I saw with Flash enabled is visible - which I take to mean it is a page consisting of lots of Flash 'content'. Also the CPU usage remains low (8%) if I go to that page - after disabling the Shockwave Flash plugin.
I have seen the CPU also go high on youtube.com pages also - CPU jumps just as I said above - if Flash is enabled. CPU then drops after disabling Flash plugin.
I was hoping you had a fix for my problem? My PC becomes almost unusable with the CPU so high. It sure looks like it is the Flash plugin driving the CPU so high.

I am also facing the same problem from last 2-3 weeks since i upgraded my flash player to latest one.
All softwares and drivers are upto-date.
I play wartune MMO flash browser based game (also applicable to youtube videos)  which is now using above 80% of CPU. Before upgrading, CPU usage was normal around 5-15% depending upon the events, but not more than 20% even if i open 3-4 accounts of wartune in different windows at the same time. It happens in all browsers (IE10, Mozila22.00, Opera12.15, Chrome27.0.1453.116 m).
I tried all solutions like disabling  hardware acceleration, flash cache size to unlimited, clearing all flash cache etc but the same problem.
Please fix this problem as soon as possible.

  • Stuck with 50% cpu usage

I created a new thread for this problem because it has no relation to my first but does have similar symptoms.
Ok, every time I play a dvd audio disc the cpu spikes constantly to 61% then at some point it will keep 50% usage active despite not playing the dvd audio disc anymore(system is idle). By this time audio is puking anyway.
This also happens when I work on something that keeps exceeding the 50% cpu usage. At some point the 50% gets stuck and everything slows down and have to reboot.
At first I thought it was the soundcard now I suspect it is something else, since even in graphic applications it happens.
    Win 2000 SP 3
    875 neo fis2r
    P4 3.06 HT enabled
    4x512 ddr400 twinmos
    1 80gig maxtor pata drive C
    2 120gig seagate sata drives
1 18gig seagate cheetah scsi drive
    samsung 48x combo drive
    1 zip 100 drive
    ati 9800 pro HIS
    audigy 2
    430 watts ps enermax

Performance is not really the issue. Since it is fast until it gets hit by the 50% bug.
I would have considered the interfaces too but that was with the older 50% problem. Problems with PATA/SATA/SCSI usually mean slow downs in transfer speeds and scratch disks. Getting stuck at 50% cpu usage seems like a bug.
Most people might not even encounter this problem unless the play dvd audio disks or use apps that peaks often.
I'm still worried with win2000 sp4. There has been issues with it.

  • Outlook 2010 High CPU usage

I have installed Outlook on this computer several time and continue to get this same issue. Outlook stays at 100-88% CPU usage. I wiped out the system twice now and still continue to get the problem. I checked out other forums and they speak of disabling the add-on I have disable all of them and still continues with the same high usage. I downloaded Microsofts Process Explorer used it and found that when I kill or suspend this thread:
    mso.dll!Ordinal4981+0x76
    Screen Shot of Thread:

Once that is done Outlook runs smooth with no issues. There is only one problem, when I kill or suspend the thread and then later close Oultook it locks Outlook. So I have to force the process to close. Any ideas would be be greatly appreciated.
Oh and alittle more info for you this is running the 32 bit version NO 64 bit installed.
    Thank you all in Advance!

Are you sure it's not the Search Indexer trying to index your items?  How long does the CPU usage stay high like that?  In theory the CPU usage should be pretty high (at least during idle times) for as long as a day or so when you first install so it can index your messages.
Just a thought.  But definitely try Scott's suggestion of starting in Safe Mode.

To add to Nick's comments, "Other" is typically approximately 1 gigabyte.  Occasionally for some users, it gets much (many times) bigger because they have some corrupt files.  If that's the case, it's best to restore the iPhone.
Plug the iPhone into (current) iTunes, let it sync, then choose "Restore" on the right.  If restoring from the iPhone backup does not help, then restore (again) as new and then manaully sync the iPhone.

The way something "feels" is very subjective.  We would need to know your actual temps.  You can install the free iStat Pro widget which is available as a download directly from Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
Let us know what CPU temps you're seeing at the time you feel your machine is hot.  As you indicated your CPU usage was only 10%, that would imply that you already know that heavy CPU usage would be one cause for your machine to be running on the warm side... but that doesn't seem to be the cause here.
