Things That Make Me Wonder...

I sort of understand how vinegar is made... but I don't understand how Balsamic Vinegerette is made out of Balsa wood?
The book said women are from Venus and men are from Mars... so why am I not from the planet Uranus when my wife tells me I'm acting like an a**hole?
When a woman has to change her mind... and dress... and shoes... and handbag... upwards of a dozen times before leaving the house... why are they surprised when we men do not understand them?
When I'm about to walk out the door and my wife asks "are you really going to wear that" what am I supposed to say... "no dear, I just put on these comfortable clothes because you were not dressing me like a two year old"?
Besides tripping and hitting your head on the door, so she has to call an ambulance, what IS the correct answer when your wife asks "does this dress make my *** look fat?"
Are there really enough gullible (stupid?) people in the world that spammers actually make money by spewing their garbage onto everyone's computers?
Well... ignore the above... PT Barnum said something about a sucker was born every minute... and I guess that is true today, with computers instead of believing there is really a woman with a snake's tail in the sideshow (and they just HAVE to spend a quarter to go see inside the tent)

how Balsamic Vinegerette is made out of Balsa wood?
With great difficulty
The book said women are from Venus and men are from Mars... so why
am I not from the planet Uranus when my wife tells me I'm acting like
an a**hole?
Because it's just an act.
When a woman has to change her mind... and dress... and shoes...
and handbag... upwards of a dozen times before leaving the house... why
are they surprised when we men do not understand them?
Women love surprises.
When I'm about to walk out the door and my wife asks "are you
really going to wear that" what am I supposed to say... "no dear, I just
put on these comfortable clothes because you were not dressing me like a
two year old"?
Just say "Well, I'm going to take it all off later when we go streaking, but I don't want to ruin the surprise just yet...and I know how you love surprises, dear!"
Besides tripping and hitting your head on the door, so she has to
call an ambulance, what IS the correct answer when your wife asks "does
this dress make my *** look fat?"
Just say "The dress? No, dear, the cheeseburgers and ice cream did all that."
Are there really enough gullible (stupid?) people in the world
that spammers actually make money by spewing their garbage onto
everyone's computers?
Is this even a question?
Well... ignore the above... PT Barnum said something about a
sucker was born every minute... and I guess that is true today, with
computers instead of believing there is really a woman with a snake's
tail in the sideshow (and they just HAVE to spend a quarter to go see
inside the tent)
A quarter? Now THAT'S a bargain! I think Adobe is charging about $399 for that right now....

    Hi There!
The camera is a Panasonic Lumix. I don't have a USB card reader. I did try and different port although not a different cable.
I did remember one additional thing. I plugged my camera in at work to a PC. It was after that, when I came home, that the iPhoto wasn't working when I connected my camera to our iMac/iPhoto at home. I think this may have caused the problem.
    Cheers!

  • Little things that make Linux more secure

So after reading a post about rm -rf /home mishap I've decided to make my Arch a bit more safer and share it with you.
So if you have some useful things that make your Arch safer as it is share it here.
So first thing I've did I've decided to add this to my bashrc as alias:
alias rm='echo "last chance before screwing things up 10s..." && sleep 10s && rm'
10 seconds is maybe a bit too much, but it gives you enough time to prevent things from screwing up (at least if you're doing it as normal user...)
The other thing I've done was to prevent Forkbombs to take down the system. I've found this when I tried to reduce swappiness of my Arch.
Sorry can't find the link anymore but what I did was this:
    ulimit -u 30
It limits the number of processes on 30, so forkbomb has no effect; but the site said that this could prevent you from compiling things and similar stuff.
So I'm not sure how good is for you.
Do you have any good advice what to do to make it safer.
Something maybe in likes of SELinux or iptables (I have no idea how to set them )
    please share.

    karol wrote:
Well, it's your system, but let me tell you that 30 processes is "a bit" too low. Did you test this setup w/ a running X?
There are many definitions of "safe":
    - hacker/cracker-proof,
    - PEBKAC/fool-proof,
    - backups etc. in case your hardware dies.
    - etc.
I'm the only user on my computer and I trust myself not to do really dumb things.
Actually I did. I have KDEmod an "whatnot" running. I was surprised myself still don't really know how it's actually possible.
I've tried the forkbomb it won't work, but I can start new apps, have X and KDE with all it's bells and wisthels runnign and still don't get any errosr which I would expect.
    @Xyne:
Well I personally think that hitting y for every subfolder of certain folder I wish to remove is waste of time. But agreed 10s is too much. I'll reduce it to 3-4.
I know I am cautious to some extent. But I decided to start this thread so thredas like my borther / sister / I ve rm -rf-ed my / /home or something else.
I do kind of trust myslef even if I only skim through AUR PKGBUILD files and haven't touch iptables (yet).
I've also don't have SSH on my install as I don't need it.
But to be truthful I do have the weakest password for my root, so that's probably bad (have to think of another password).
I know that most archers know how to take care for their computer, but I was still curious what you do. And if what I did made my computer safer.
What do I have to add to my PS1 so that my root will be red?

  • The little things that make you go 'ooh, nice'

One of the things I enjoy with rolling release and access to a lot of development software through aur is the new discoveries you make every so often when you roll out a new version.
I just updated bespin-svn and have to say 'ooh, very nice!'. Some changes, nothing dramatic, but enough to make the whole qt experience just that more polished.
I've generally shied away from using sudo because I prefer the root password for administrative task, not my way easy user pass. I just discovered you can set sudo to always prompt for root password. I am using sudo systemwide now and loving it. Much smoother to use now. Probably also a bit more secure as sometimes I can forget to exit root terminals when multitasking.

Haha!   I saw you had posted in this thread and thought to myself "Dolby likes something!  WOW!".   Turns out you don't...
I like a lot of things. I just happen to dont express my likes as often as i express my dislikes, nor as often as i would like to express them, for various reasons, some of which are beyond my control.

  • Things that make you go hmmmm...

When I try to send an email, I get an error that says:
"This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
The sender address [email protected] was rejected by the server"
    That is my e-mail address.
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

That was only a guess. If I was right, it could be either .Mac or Comcast. You will have to contact them both and ask. They will tell you if they have a cut-off limit that will get you into trouble when sending e-mail. If they did cut you off, I would have expected them to send you a nasty e-mail about it.
Try to send some test mail to yourself or another e-mail account you can check. Add smtp.comcast.net as an SMTP server and try to use that. You don't want to send out any more mass e-mails until you check to make sure it won't get you into trouble.

  • The little things that make you go "grrr"

What minor issues get on your nerves? Perhaps we can all help each other out by airing our grievances.
For me the main thing has got to be that every update of firefox is slower and more leaky than the one before it. It used to be fast and smooth, now it regularly takes over 500mb of ram. I just love the extensions though

I know what you mean. It's most annoying on my eee where it tries to bring up eth0 during runlevel 1. Hangs the process for 1-2 seconds. Not much, but it's an annoyance.

Maybe try posting a thread with your driver info and the config file you tried to use? I thought netcfg was broken for me for the longest time before noticing I had a typo in the hex string for the key

You can configure a lot of this to be exactly like that using sudo and the SGID bit for certain binaries.
I'm annoyed at my eee 900 taking longer to get from bios to grub than from grub to login. I hear there's a bios update that can fix that, but I'm afraid to brick it. Anyone know how I can tell if I have the specific correct bios?

  • The big things that make you go "oh f*(&, no"

Share those moments when something just went horribly wrong when you were least expecting it (computer-related, preferably not a real-life tragedy).
Before I left the house this morning, I sync'd the laptop with the desktop because I was taking it somewhere. As an afterthought I did an upgrade on the desktop as I hadn't turned it on in almost a week. Halfway through the upgrade the console got spammed with error messages and everything stopped working (and I mean everything... ls, su, etc.), even in a separate tty. As far as I can tell, there was a disk error on /var and it borked the system upgrade completely. After muttering a bit, I had to power off manually and leave it for the evening, during which I spent about two hours backing up data, cloning partitions, checking disks and upgrading packages from a host backup system.
I still have no idea what happened (the logs are empty), but the disk seems fine. The partition in question was a ReiserFS LVM volume that has passed all subsequent checks and from which I was able to create an ext4 clone (there's a bad joke in here somewhere about Reiser murdering my system).
There was a great facepalm moment at the end of it all too... after copying disks, changing fstab and re-installing (via the backup system) all packages that had been updated in the last two sessions, I forgot to update the bootloader to point to the new disk. It took me 20 minutes, at least 2 reboots, and sleep-deprivation-driven questioning of my own sanity to realize it.
All I can conclude from this is that Allan is a sneaky b*$^@&).

Not nearly as bad as Awebb's or ewaller's, but it ate up my entire weekend a couple weeks back:  Since a laptop is all I have, and I don't want to keep the battery charged up at 100% all the time, I'm always looking to squeeze out battery life.  So I decided to move my /home partition from the internal HDD to the mSATA SSD the OS is installed on, and create a new partition on the HDD for all the media I don't use when on battery, so the HDD can spin down and stay spun down.  Before proceeding I made back-ups of personal media, and backed up the / partition using Acronis True Image just to be safe.
While tweaking the partitions, there was some slip-up in the Gparted live environment that left the / filesystem in a weird state: Even though the resize from 4.5 Gb to 8 Gb was successful, it spit out some error message and the reading showed roughly the same proportion of the disk was filled; i.e. before and after the resize, both Gparted and df showed ~85% of the disk as full.  "No big deal,"  I thought.  "I've seen this once before; I'll just wipe the partition, keep it at 8 Gb and just restore the image in Acronis." So that's what I did.
Trouble was, despite the fact that the image had been successfully created, and Acronis kept claiming it had been successfully restored, the target partition was nonetheless empty.  I tried deploying the image to three different partitions on three different disks several dozen times, always with the same result.  Seriously, I must have spent four hours doing the same thing over and over, because I could not believe that two different pieces of software--both of which I'd used many times in the past, both of which were highly trusted and one of which I'd actually coughed up $45 USD for--would crap out on me in the span of an hour.
I was forced to reinstall and then restore ~600 Gb from my back-up, but it all worked out for the best: I took the opportunity to further slim down my system, I got UEFI boot working, and I decided to take the opportunity to use BTRFS full-time, 'cuz of course when you drop a chunk of money on red twice at the filesystem wheel and it comes up black each time, the best choice is to double down and spin again.

  • When I try to open Firefox, a window opens that says Firefox has stopped working. The only thing that makes firefox works is Re-installing it, and it's only temporary, beacause as soon as I close the window, it stops working again.

When I click on details, it says Problem Event Name is BEX. The window that pops up is the same that would show up if Firefox freezes.

You can try opening the file "as a copy" from the open dialog. You can also try the blind export to .idml: Adobe Community: InDesign 6 is crashing when attempting to open a particular document. All others are opening OK.
and there's a tool for Windows you can try, if you have access to a windows machine: INDDRecovery — a program for restoring corrupted InDesign documents
After that, it's a question of how much money you want to throw at it. Markzware.com has a paid recovery service that will probably work.

  • ITunes 7 - two small things that make me want to downgrade

    1. About 50% of the time iTunes selects but does not complete the action when I click on play or zoom (that green button). It works when I move the mouse a little.
For example: I keep my iTunes zoomed in (small) on my desktop, I have it in view so I can hit play, pause, track, or zoom it bigger. Sometimes when I click on play/pause or zoom iTunes does nothing except select the button. Sometimes, when I click (it only selects) and move the mouse even one pixel, it processes my request to play/pause or zoom. Sometimes I have to click again and if I don't, iTunes ignores my request.
    2. Incorporate the entire CoverFlow application.
I like, and still use, the original CoverFlow application. I think it is superior because of the pretty animations (it tilts/swings and "fingers" through background album art when you mouseover). It also highlights the album art when you mouseover. The original CoverFlow builds its own iTunes playlist of whatever album you selected (you can also queue albums buy apple+click). It also filters out all albums under "x" minutes (default 20 minutes), if you want. Finally, I can fullscreen CoverFlow, and there is no option to do that in iTunes. Why not allow for all these features, perhaps just have them 'shut off' as default. I mean, apple /owns/ CoverFlow now, they should incorporate the whole application.
Fortunately, the original still works, so I suggest everyone find the last version (1.990) someplace (it has been pulled from the original website, obviously).
    3. iTunes 7 runs slower on my machine, which is frustrating.

Anyone know how to get videos back on my iPod? It's how I show clients their edits when I meet with them, and now I'm screwed. ITunes says the format isn't playable by the iPod, and re-installing 6.x did nothing...

  • POLL: things that make whine come back after mirror widget

I have the whine. Goes away with mirror widget on then off -> whine stays away until:
    1) reboot
    2) turn on imovie HD
    3) click on "recording" tab in preferences of quicktime
Anyone else confirm and/or add to what makes whine come back post mirror widget trick?

    You are correct sir.
You are better off using the Quiet MBP application. It uses just a little bit more of your processor.

  • Things that should be in the next update... please don't wait for 2.0

I've been using adobe products a long time and I have to say that I am a little disappointed there has not been more thought put into things that should just work in a v1 product.
    Here is the list:
Ingest window should be able to be able to take up the full screen.  At a minimum, it should remember the last size. My paths get somewhat long and this is very frustrating to continually have to resize the window or panes every time I ingest.
Ingest should put the files in the bin selected when I hit ingest.  It always puts them at the root.  To make matters worse, keyboard shortcuts that are used to select files in almost any program like SHIFT+HOME do not work.  I have to click, scroll to the bottom and shift click the last file to select a range.  Then drag all the clips to the target bin.  Borrow the code from Premiere
Keyboard shortcuts for clip navigation.  Logging clips with keyboard shortcuts is a godsend and this is one thing that I love about Prelude.  Anyone who has to do a lot of logging will tell you these keyboard shortcuts are imperative to a smooth workflow.  This is especially true if you have to log hundreds of clips like I do.  Next clip, previous clip when editing from the navigation tree or in a roughcut would be extremely helpful.  If I am in a roughcut, I can easily get into a clip, but not back out to the roughcut where I was.  The only way I have found is to click on the roughcut name in the timeline window.
Re-linking moved media - FAIL.  Since this product is supposed to let different people log media, it seems crazy that the program can not re-link it.  Very few people in this world store there files in the same absolute path.
Lack of updates.  Makes me wonder if Adobe is committed to this product.  Having a really long time between iterations is hard on your users.  At this point I have no clue if any of these features will ever be added.
I have spent a lot of time in this program and it is on the verge of being great.  I personally think that before you start adding new features, you should fix some of the things that make it hard to use.

Thank you for your post and your passion for Prelude. Input from customers like you is how we can improve out product.
I do have a few comments and questions for you about your experience. Also, many of the items you have listed are already part of Prelude.
    Replies to your list:
    1.  The Ingest Dialog can be sized to fill your entire screen. Simply drag-drop the edges to resize. This size is also remembered on subsequent launches. This has been in the product for quite some time – what version of Prelude are you running? Currently we have made the following releases: Prelude 1.0, 1.01, 1.02 and 1.03. Our v2.0 has been announced and revealed at NAB last week and is coming out soon with many more enhancements and improvements. Rest assured that Adobe is committed to this product – as you will see with this new release.
    2.  Ingesting into the selected BIN is part of our upcoming release that was revealed at NAB. I'm currently on a Mac so cannot test the SHIFT+HOME shortcut, but Prelude does support CTRL/SHIFT selection options to make selection easier. I'll look into the HOME and END options as well. If they are missing we certainly want them added.
    3.  Glad you find the keyboard driven workflow beneficial. We had a lot of customer feedback early in our 1.0 days that this was a must. Adding support for clip selection in the Project Panel to open and log clips is something in our backlog we would also like to deliver because as you say it is very useful and saves time. We are also reviewing our Clip/Roughcut UI and workflow. Don't have anything to report yet other than this is an area we are focusing on.
    4.  Relinking is possible in Prelude 1.03. We've added additional relinking support in our 2.0 that provides relinking in rough cuts as well. If you are not yet on 1.03 please use the free update and let us know how it works for you.
    5.  As mentioned above, we have 3 updates posted last year for our 1.0. And 2.0 is coming out soon.
Please continue to share with us your thoughts and ideas for improving Prelude. We have an aggressive feature TODO list but are always looking for more direct input to help us properly prioritize what's part of our next delivery.
    Thanks!
    Michael

They probably can do such s thing if they choose to do so.
Let them know that you would like this:

Not sure this is a very useful thing.  It would run down the battery.  All a thief has to do is remove them SIM and restore the iphone to stop it from being tracked.

Just to make certain, you inserted the original installation disk and started the MBP holding down the C key?  Did the Optical drive reject the disk or did it just spin?  If the former, the lens in the drive may be dirty and needs to be cleaned.  If the latter, you will have to take it to an Apple repair facility.

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.
