Think i have a bad HD?

Hello Everyone, I am currently in Iraq so all this info is second hand from my wife:) This problem is on a late 2007 iMac 2.4ghz. Has leopard installed
She told me that she was surfing in Firefox when the program became very slow and the icon was the swirling colors for a long time. It would not stop doing that and she didn't know what to do. So she rebooted the machine and when it tried to reboot, it came to a grey screen with a flashing system folder icon on it that had a "question mark" on the folder.
Her quote:
When I go into the disk utility > first aid like the apple site suggest, it's like my HD isn't there. none of the utility options come up (such as repair, etc.). There was another option to restore from back up and I could get as far as selecting a timecapsule dated today at 11:37a, but once selected it just stalls at the next screen 'searching for disks' in the restore destination volume window. I take this to mean it finds no where to restore to - no harddrive?
I purchased the Applecare for it so i am not to worried about the hardware replacement part.
I have read some other posts on this site that putting the OS disk in and going to Disk utility might make the drive show up but you would have to reinstall OS X?
She is looking for the OS disks as i have 2 imacs and both are not the same model.
Another question i have is this machine originally came with Tiger and was upgraded to Leopard. If she has to reinstall the OS, will she also have to install the leopard upgrade or will that be on the TC backup?
I am going to have her take it into the local genius bar and i am not sure what they will do for her there. Will they just replace the harddrive and make her install the OS or will they at least put a fresh 10.4 (what it came with) on it and she will be responsible for Leopard and the TC restore?
Sorry for the long post but it is frustrating being 7000 miles away and cant help...

Unfortunately, it sounds like she restarted from the Mac OS X installation disc already and when she ran Disk Utility from the Installer menu, the internal drive was not visible. Therefore, there not much she can do except take it in and get the hard drive replaced under AppleCare.
Once she gets the iMac back, it will probably have a standard Mac OS X installation on it. If she wants to restore the iMac to the last available Time Machine backup date/time (which should be within one hour of failure), she needs to start up from the Leopard installation disc again and select that same command for +Restore from Backup+ from the Installer's Utilities menu. She should then be able to select the specific backup date/time and target the restore for iMac's new internal drive.
If everything works as it should, the iMac should be back to the way it was to within one hour of the failure.
If she has to reinstall the OS, will she also have to install the leopard upgrade or will that be on the TC backup?
If restoring from Time Machine works as it should, there should be no need to reinstall the OS. Time Machine should recreate the exact snapshot of the drive at "11:37a." Since it was already Leopard, the restored drive will be the same.
I am going to have her take it into the local genius bar and i am not sure what they will do for her there.
They will most likely take in the iMac for repair. The repair will probably be done locally at that store "in back," if it's just a hard drive replacement. She should mention that she has a Time Capsule with the backup. If she brings it with her too, they may do the Restore process for her after fixing the iMac and before returning it to her. It would be worth asking.
She may also want to ask for the bad drive back, if you think there is any sensitive data on it. However, there may be some AppleCare policy that does not allow the replaced drive to be returned.
Also, she can go to the Apple retail store website to make an appointment for the Genuis Bar (to avoid a long wait). Just find her nearest store here.

Be safe over there...!

  • Do I have a bad memory slot and what to do about it.

About 3 weeks ago when I came down to my computer, intel imac purchased may 2006, in the morning the screen was black and power button was lit, keyboard did not work and the computer would not wake up from sleep. Rebooted and the power light would come one, no chime or screen power up, and the keyboard would not respond (ie caps lock key would light up). Tried multiple reboots and pulling everything connected out but nothing worked. Next on the torubleshooting list was to remove the ram. With both chips removed, 1gb and 512mb, I would get the flashing powerlight when starting up. I placed back in the 512 chip which is in the slot furthest from the front and the same symptons of just a solid power light with nothing else was exhibited. Removed the chip and placed the 1gb chip back into the slot closest to the front of the computer, everything worked fine. Startup was normal etc. Next, I removed the 1gb chip and put it into the slot towards the back and it would not work, next, moved the 512 chip to the front and all is well. Therefore, I think I have a bad memory slot given the torubleshooting procedures. Is this a correct assumption?
    Here are my questions:
    1. Are there any software solutions that will tell if the memory slot is indeed bad?
    2. Does this sound like a hardware issue or is there an update to the core system that would fix this problem?
    3. In order to get this repaired, would I take the imac to the apple store?
    4. The computer was purchased in May 2006, if I purchased an applecare protection plan, would that cover the repairs or does it need to be purchased within 90 days of the computer?
    Thanks in advance.

I think that sounds like a firmware update gone bad. Apple page I found says: "In the rare case that your computer displays a black screen after start up, you will need to restore your computers firmware back to factory condition before you can apply firmware update."
Dont know, but sounds like it.

    may be worth a try.

  • I think I have one of the fast dying batteries 5s. Last 6 hrs and just texting not even a lot. Has iOS 7 on my 5 and was nowhere near this. Brightness 1/3 back grounding off. I would also like to know if I can add if you replace for bigger hard drive. i

I would also like a 32 none were available I took the first5s I could find. But the batterey is horrible. I barely even use is brightness low and does pretty fast on network. I think may be a bad battery like I read about. It's sb my messages I have none and takes up 3.4gb.... And there's only actually 13gn and 3 is the iOS so why don't you make a external hd or something it's crazy hard to even get the phone.

Take it to apple store and don't replace it with the new one my son had the same problem he was in there about 10 minutes and walked out with a new phone

  • I have a 4s runing 6.1.1 every 5minutes it promp me network lost and i have very bad battery issues lit draine so fast what should i do

I have a 4s runing 6.1.1 every 5minutes it promp me network lost and i have very bad battery issues lit draine so fast what should i do?

What have you figured out? Anything? What you show just shows a pretty quiet system except for firefox having a bunch of tabs open. You've got some page ins and outs so you maybe your'e hitting your HD with swap files more than what you think?
I think something like coconut battery app or something like it will tell you the charge cycles on the battery. How many do you have?
Lastly, are you using any extensions like ad blocker, or click to flash?

  • Do i have a bad batch of ram or a bad riser card?

I recently took my mac pro 3.1 up to 16 gigs of ram in 8 2gb dimms. I had the dimm in riser b slot go bad and I replaced it. It took a few days to get a new dimm so took the dimm out slot 4 and put it into slot 2 and removed dimm 3 as well so that i had 12 gb to work with. When I put the replace ment dimm and the dimm out of slot 3 back in the dimm in slot 2 gave me a red LED. I moved it to slot 4 to try reseeting it but it still shows bad in slot 4. do you think I got a bad batch of ram or that my riser is killing the ram that I have? I dont want to have to keep replacing the tam if my mac is killing the ram.

I have a hard time following
DIMMs are always treated in pairs, and returned as such, no one replaces a single DIMM.
8 x 2GB with 4 on each Riser is fine.
You should have returned both A3 and A4 (you don't metion which Riser so I'll just use A).
There should be method to madness.
Try one set at a time. Or half. Or all on one Riser
Try swapping Riser A and B.
Apple Hardware Test is of help with Risers and 'mechanical' errors. To test software based errors.
Having a DIMM or set show as HALF their rated capacity is also a common problem with FBDIMMs, which should always be kept cool as possible and monitored, including increase of the system fans by 300-400 rpm.
As I said, Crucial, MacSales, Ramjet, Trans, they all want you to return the matching sets.
I don't think your Risers are killing your RAM. but maybe choice and handling and vendor.

  • I have a bad block. What and how do I save before reinitializing.

Tech Tools tells me that I have a bad block and need to reinitialize the HD. I have been told that all file information will be erased, while programs/applications will not be harmed, so I need to back up my User Profiles (my and my wife's). I have 2 questions:
    1. What else besides my user profile should I save (or, to put it another way, what files are NOT in my user profile, and where would I find them)?
    2. Once I have reinitialized the HD (supposedly the disc utility should guide me through this), will simply dragging saved user profile (from the thumb drive) onto the HD automatically reinstall all my settings? Must I laboriously redo each program's preferences?

In Disk Utility>Security options>Zero out data
Boot from the install disk > select language > DON'T select Continue > instead go to Disk Utility in the MenuBar at top.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24002
Don't know if this would help, but for the Mail issue, you could try "Rebuild" in Mailbox from Menu > (select the mailbox) > Rebuild
The AW problem might or might not be related to corruption from the bad blocks that weren't mapped out by zeroing out, or the data that was already corrupted earlier from those bad blocks. After you zero out, you could try re-installing AW. Realize, zeroing out will wipe your drive. If you do this, be ready to re-install everything.
Look over what Limnos wrote earlier. Zeroing and re-installing, clean as much as possible may prove to be the real solution.
Maybe the original damage was only minor, so, before you do this, you could first try repairing the drive (from Disc Utility booted from the disc, "Repair Disc.") Then, if everything is successful, when you are _booted back normally_, repair Permissions. Don't repair them booted from the disc. This might or might not resolve the problem with AW and Mail. At least, if these are the only issues you are experiencing, give this a try before taking the drastic step of a clean install, which involves a lot of work. You can always do this later if you keep uncovering new issues.
See how this goes first and post back with the results. If you take the zero out path, I think you will need to re-format the drive.
EDIT one more thing. You definitely don't want to zero the drive until you have some kind of clone/backup from which to move everything back, or you will lose all your data: mail, documents, music, etc.

    I
got your message about making sure to use the machine specific disk that came with my machine. Unfortunately, Apple no longer sells Tiger replacement disks. I've got a couple of bids out on ebay, and will update when I have news to add to this post.
Thank you for your help, Frank!
To be clear you called the 800 number and explained what the situation was, old machine and lost the original DVD's?
Just checking because if you just called and tried to buy the DVD's they might tell you they no longer sell them but you aren't really trying to buy them your trying to replace the ones that are missing.
Ebay may work but there is a certain specificity to the DVD's required which, even if they seem right, might not work.
Good luck either way. If you get a chance when you get the DVD's I'd be interested in hearing how it all works out.

  • How Can I Tell if I Have a Bad RAM Terminal?

A few weeks ago, my MacBook Pro started freezing several times a day, and it was to the point where I couldn't use it for even 10 minutes. It would also beep three times most of the time that it froze. So I turned it off for like 3 weeks and then took it in to the Genius Bar.
He ran some tests and said it was a RAM issue and I could buy new RAM chips (or whatever) and so I did, and when I installed two of them, my computer wouldn't start. I thought maybe the MHz was too big. I took one out, and the computer worked fine. For thirty minutes. Then BEEEEP beeeeeep BEEEEEP
I removed the one RAM and reseated it in the other terminal, and my computer has been working fine for most of the morning. I am running Chrome and playing youtube, Facebook, uploading pictures, and using iPhoto.
My MacBookPro came with 2 2GB RAMs (1333 MHz). The new RAMs are 2 4GB DDR3 OC3-10666 and compatible with 1333MHz and 1066MHz, according to the package.
The closest Apple store to me is more than an hour drive, and I'm wondering if there are any tests I can do at home. To me, an inexperienced computer repairwoman, it looks like I have a bad RAM terminal. Tonight I will reseat the RAM in the first terminal I tried, and see if it freezes and beeps again. It's possible that it was just seated incorrectly, perhaps?
Please send any and all advice, thoughts, questions, etc. Thank you!

As John Galt says, not all RAM is created equal.  Crucial.com or MacSales.com (OWC) are well respected Mac RAM vendors.
    Rember
    <https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15837/rember/>
    is a wrapper around memtest.
Note:  If you Mac refuses to run the app, you can force it by doing Control-Click -> Open, and then agreeing to the dialog box.  Rember is an unsigned app, which is why the Mac may complain.  The Control-Click -> Open trick is a way to force the Mac to run the unsigned app.
If you are having problems betting into a full Mac OS X GUI, then you might want to get memtest which can be run from the command line in Single-User mode (boot holding Command-S).  If you have installed 'Rember' you can find a copy of 'memtest' buried inside
    ./Rember.app/Contents/Resources/memtest all
the ./ means you have to figure out the front part of the directory path to Rember.app where ever you stored it.
Here are some additional web sites, but keep in mind that 'Rember' is a wrapper for 'memtest' so when those sites discuss 'memtest', 'Rember' is essentially the same thing.

  • I think I have opened the sobig.f virus in my hotmail account and it keeps seding emails to my contacts. How do I stop it, and will it effect any of my other transactions like internet banking/shopping, is it safe?

I think I have opened the sobig.f virus in my hotmail account and it keeps seding emails to my contacts. How do I stop it, and will it effect any of my other transactions like internet banking/shopping, is it safe To continue using my ipad ?

This isn't due to malware. There is no known malware capable of infecting an iPad that has not been jailbroken (ie, hacked to allow apps from outside the App Store).
As lizdance40 says, your Hotmail account has been hacked remotely. Change the password immediately. Hotmail accounts are popular targets, but as long as you choose a good password, and make sure that password is not the same as a password you use with any other account, you should be safe.
I disagree with lizdance40's statement that you have to abandon the account and create a new e-mail address. If a hacker is able to get back in even after changing the password, the problem is not with the account itself. There's another vulnerability of some kind somewhere. Perhaps the account allows hackers to leave a "back door" to get back in (such as with GMail's delegation feature), in which case any such feature needs to be reviewed and have settings changed. Perhaps you are checking mail in an insecure manner while on an insecure network (ie, a wireless network that requires no password). Perhaps you are using a password on multiple accounts, and a different account has been compromised. Perhaps a hacker has used knowledge gained by prior access to your account to achieve "social hacking" (ie, convincing a tech to give him access because he has "forgotten the password"). There are many scenarios, but there's no good reason to abandon the account entirely.

It's probably asking you to verify the security code found on the back of your credit card.

  • Can't I get my old iTunes that I have purchased downloaded from Apple?  I don't have the old computer anymore.  Also, is there a number to call if I think I have more than one account and would like them to consolidate my accounts?

    I have two problems:
    1.  I no longer have my old computer and want to download the iTunes I have purchased in previous years.  Aren't they all in "the cloud?"
    2.  I think I have more than one account and would like to get them combined.  Is there a good number or email to Apple that I could get that done?
    THanks!
          SHawn

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Have you failed to do this?
You can redownload some iTunes purchases in some countries:
Download past purchases - Apple Support
As provided, you cannot merge accounts
    Sorry

  • What happens if you think you have two apple IDs?

I think I have two apple IDs. One I created many years ago with an IPod, but I don't know what that one is now. It has most of my music attached to it. Now I have one with my email that doesn't have all that music and I can't get the music to attach to it??

Content from the iTunes Store is permanently bound to the Apple ID through which the content was purchased. If you used two different Apple IDs, you'll need to use both IDs to authorize computers, view your purchase history, or re-download items. If you can't remember an ID or its password, try this page:

I am no longer using that email so I cannot get the password sent to it. I also cannot retrieve the password for rosepetttals because it says that the birthday I am entering is incorrect. but im pretty sure I would know my own birthday.
