Think i'm missing a partition on my hdd

think i'm missing a partition on my hdd, don't have what i did before i tried a re-install of os x lion to repair safari, can anyone help?
When i open my disc utitlity on the left hand side it only list:
Hitachi..........
mac os x .......
super drive

Why is that making you hesitate? You can't accidentally remove any of the built-in apps, that I'm aware of.

again image capture is not involved with deleting photos from iPhoto in any way ever
the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager is very good for finding duplicates as is Duplicate Annihilator

Recreate missing recovery partition

After wiping my computer via partitioning from a USB installer, and reinstalling from the USB, I noticed when I tried to boot that there is no recovery partition. Just OS X and Windows (bootcamp). Is there a proprietary built in Apple way to recreate the recovery partiton?

CCC Carbon Copy Cloner has a utility called "Disk Center" that is included with CCC that will create a Recovery Partition for you. I understand that CCC is not free, but it does have a free 30 day trial.
I did use the musings.silvertooth.us utility to create a missing recovery partition successfully, but found (1) it hard to find the right version on that site and (2) I was somewhat uncomfortable running a low-level AppleScript install program style utility built by an unknown source on the internet. Call my paranoid, but in the future I would prefer to either use CCC to avoid losing my recovery partition like I did with Super Duper (which I've loved for years until this missing recovery partition issue) or use CCC to create missing recovery partitions.
The "Disk Center" in CCC Carbon Copy Cloner is not obvious and easy to find... it's easy to not know it's there. But once you find it in the CCC menu system, it is seemingly obvious that it is a turnkey way to create a Recovery HD Partition.
I just thought I would share, since I burned several hours of pain-staking research and experimentation on this.

Missing Boot Partition

I am trying to install Solaris on a machine which already has Windows98.I want to make my machine dual boot.After the Solaris installation is completed and i try to boot the machine , i get the errror message " Missing Boot Partition".
Please help me to solve the problem.

There are chances that if you are installing Solaris behind windows system,
then the boot sector might be overwritten.
Here are some steps you need to do when you are installing Solaris behind windows
1) Back up your Windows 98.
2) Create a primary partition for Solaris with DOS fdisk or Partition
Magic's fdisk utility.
3) Edit the partition table with a disk editor and give the Solaris
Partition the ID 82 (But be careful if you install Linux after. Linux
Swap partition has the same ID)
4) Save the Master Boot record in a file
5) Install Solaris 8 from the Software CD 1 (not the Install CD)
6) The Solaris partition will be recognized from the Setup. You don't
need 2 partitions, as if you would install from the installation CD
7) After Solaris installation is completed, boot DOS from a floppy and
rewrite your MBR.

2007 2.6GHz 17 Inch Macbook Pro (MacBookPro3,1) Missing Recovery Partition?

My MacBook Pro 2007 2.6GHz 17 Inch is missing a recovery partition. I was told it is supposed to be added automatically when you reinstall/update your mac os x. I recently did a fresh install of Mavericks. It was missing. I did another fresh install, still missing. Then I restored data and did a non-fresh install. Still Missing. I kinda want to be able to track the computer. It has the original hard drive, and all the other components are original as well, except for the battery, which exploded, apple replaced it under warranty a while ago, and the RAM. I upgraded the RAM today, but it didn't work before either. It is genuine OWC RAM. (The same kind apple uses) Do I need to manually create one? Should I downgrade the OS and then upgrade to Mavericks again? Is it a problem that apple is going to fix?
I did make the mistake of erasing the entire hard drive rather than just the main partition. However, according to apple, this should not have made a difference, as if it is missing it is supposed to be created with the installation.

There are two versions of recovery: the regular which will download the currently installed system and internet recovery which will allow you to wipe a drive and reinstall the originally installed system (as long as that was Lion or later). Both of them require that the recovery partition be installed - that is what allows you to boot from it (with key commands) and that you have an internet connection.

Helix missing Recovery Partition

So I wanted to update to Windows 8.1, but I couldnt find the recovery partion. I was talking to Lenovo Support and was informed that none of the Helix's ship with a recovery partion. Anybody care to confirm? Sounds like an insane decision for a high end business machine to have no recovery parttition

I think you were misinformed or misunderstood. There is a recovery partition. You can verify under Computer->Right Click->Manage->Storage\Disk Management
You can start the recovery by pressing Enter (if I remember correctly) on boot.
But... what has the recovery to do with Windows 8.1? It will be an update - like a service pack. Available tomorrow publicly. You don't need to reinstall Windows.

Missing Disk Partition after Yosemite Install (invalid sector size)

Right off the install, my exFAT partition on my MBP is missing. Thought it was not mounted automatically so I went to Disk Utility to have a look.
It says "invalid sector size (0)" or something (I'll edit/update this post in a bit. I'm on Mac Recovery as I'm typing this) and it couldn't repair it.
Bootcamped into Windows and the same thing's happening (partition shows up but as an unformatted volume, proceeds to prompt to format partition)
I haven't thought to check to see if the OSX volume has expanded or not, so I'll do it after this.
Man I hope the files are still there. Is there a fix or way to manually edit the sector size?
Would reverting back to Mavericks be able to repair it?
Disk Details:
960GB Crucial M500 SSD
Partitioning Order:
NTFS (W7) 128GB | exFAT (stuff) 512GB | HFS (OSX) 256GB | freespace (not used) the rest
(Windows reports a more complicated partition map due to the Hybrid MBR partition map, but the main partition order is as above)
(As for why this order, it happens that I am unable to add an additional partition when I install OSX before Windows due to constraints of the MBR-type partitioning, but I am able to add one when Windows is installed before OSX as a workaround to save one partition count in the MBR)

Hi putnik, thanks for the reply. I've tried the repair in Disk Utility from the recovery partition and it's unable to fix it as well.
The installer didn't have any prompts regarding File Vault (I never turned it on in the first place) beforehand.
It's my first time reading of Core Storage, so that may have bitten me on this end. The interesting property of the exFAT volume is Disk Utility recognises that as a Bootcamp volume (although no OS was installed in it and it doesn't appear in Bootcamp). (EDIT: it said that when I still had Mavericks but now it doesn't say anything even with the windows partition)
I'm still looking around for a fix or any way of reading it, and I'm holding off the last resort of reformatting it. Got a few days of work in it that I haven't backed up, although finding a fix could use the same amount of time as redoing it.

Missing BootCamp Partition

Today i decided to start up bootcamp on my macbook pro.
I started Boot Camp Assisstant, partitioned 15GB for windows and it was going fine until my system decided to crash and had to be restarted.
When i started it back up the 15GB i partitioned for windows was missing, starting up Boot Camp Assisstant brings me to the intro page like it hadnt done a thing.
I have 15GB missing somewhere and i have no idea how to recover this space.
I used Disk Utility and tried erasing free space, veryfing the disk, and reparing the disk.
Apon startup when i hold down the option key only Mac HD is shown.
Is my only option to back up my files and erase the whole HD???

1. You cannot repair disk from DU if you had not started either from the Install DVD or and ext HDD,
2. Did you see the 15GB partition from DU?
3. If answer to 1 above is "no", startup using the DVD and repair disk
4. Next, startup normally. Then start Terminal. Type: diskutil list
5. You should get a listing of the drives. While still in Terminal, type: diskutil mergepartitions. You will get a detailed description of how to merge the partitions thereby regaining your entire drive.
6. As always, backup all data before attempting.

Hi there Im after a little help.
Yesterday I installed a program called partition magic. The install went without any errors or problems but then when I start the program for the 1st time I got a blue screen and my laptop shut down. I restarted the laptop and uninstalled partition magic but now I noticed that the data partition is missing. Ive tried doing a restore back to before I installed partition magic but that does not help.
Any help would be great. Thanks

Hi Lee,
May I ask you why you have installed partition magic? Installation of such programs is always a little bit risky and should only be done if you really want to change some partitions or something else.
Have you already checked disk management of Windows? Navigate to control panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.
Can you see the second partition and is it maybe hidden or something else?

Is CC a ripoff? Yes and No. If you are new to the platform, than no. Where else can you get all this software for 600 a year, but that is not the issue I am having. I do not like being told that I have to rent the software for 50/month, because that is only the start. I am an avid CS user, Premiere, AE, PS, Illustrator, DW and now I am at a crossroads as to whether or not join the CC. 600 per year may not be that bad, but if this becomes your main workflow, what happens when Adobe and all their corporate greed, and yes it is greed decides it needs to be 75/month, or 100/month. I currently have 3 computers that I work off of, and the CC will only let you use two so now you have to buy another license for another 50/month. So now I am 100/month for the same setup of using CS6. So now if I am a new user, where is the savings? I get the discount for the first year for upgrading...then what? How high does the Adobe price go? Adobe itself stated that they will never sell a perpetual license again and let people use the software for as long as they want. That my friends is corporate greed. My much loved Adobe has now joined the ranks of Apple. Those of us who love the Apple OS and have been using their computers for years are now caught in inflated price gouging for sub-par machines when compared to the new PC rolling out at half the price and twice the power, and you all know a good PC will last just as long as a Mac. This is forcing many, and myself to change our workflow and begin moving to a PC route simply because of Apples greed to sell a 15" mac book for 2700.00. No thanks Apple. Now Adobe has stepped up to bat and basically doing the same thing. They are forcing our hands, removing the option and telling us what we can and can't do, forcing us loyal Adobe users to change our workflow to accomodate them.
The problem here is the same as our problem with our government. We let them do it and get away with it. Gas prices will never come down because we the consumer have shown that the market will bare that price and we will continue to pay it and take it. Until enough of us step up to Apple and say no more of your record earnings and way over inflated prices, they will continue down their path and we will continue to get robbed by them. Well, the same thing goes here for Adobe. We at the end of the day have the say so as to the fact if they succeed or fail. There are other options out there....good ones also, and if we provide the exodus, Adobe will have no choice but to respond, but the sad thing is that we have become a world of sheep and followers and we will contine to take it in the rear from companies like Adobe and Apple and let them get away with murder.
Adobe will raise thier price and by then it will be all too late. We the consumer ultimately has the power. I say no more. Let Adobe rot until they learn that giving us no choice to choose, only leaves us the choice to say no.

I have seen considerable negative feedback from the forums and our clients mostly around the endless rental of the software. The issue that seems to be the crux is the requirement to continue the CC to open the editors own media/work down the road. That argument I can definitely understand here and there is a simple fix to that if management at Adobe would stop and think about this. However for the sake of argument and to explain the warning I have been telling folks for a couple years now, I will give Adobe's perspective. Cloud based Delivery for all software especially OS's is coming. Whether you want it or not it's coming and when Microsoft and Apple make the move, get ready for 10 to 15 dollars a month to launch Windows or OSX. Linux is the last line of defense and until the Linux open software forum gets some standardized API's out there to lower development cost and time, it doesn't look good.
Adobe as a company looks at the Cloud Distribution as the golden goose for software companies. For years Software companies have bemoaned the cost of software piracy, R&D design time frames shrinking with tremendous industry changes annually, and support costs related to hardware manufacturers/system OEM's or version differences in software. Add to this the ability to plan R&D asset requirements, development costs of several projects over a period of time, and synchronizing releases with other software that company may develop as well. The publicly traded software companies have to further report cost analysis and earnings expectations months/years ahead of time. Those variables along with increasing sales interest through product evolution are all essentially solved with the Cloud Distribution model. With the cloud, piracy is minimized or even relatively eliminated depending on the verification or cloud model. The expected profits/earning long term are far easier to plan and forecast. This allows Adobe to plan R&D assets accordingly to the relative earning index and ensure the Public reporting's are good for company and investors. Adobe will be able to release software upgrades and improvements on demand rather than with a en mass planned release every year or 2. This keeps clients continued interest in the products and allows Adobe to shift R&D resources/personnel versus running teams for each product. This last part is really the crux of the partner relationship Adobe is creating with their clients. It is in the best interest of the clients for Adobe to succeed as it is in Adobe's interest that the clients succeed. So a equal partnership is formed with this model. It's also why the cloud delivery is a good evolution of software distribution.
The Downside to the cloud distribution is the ability to open content created during the subscription after a client lets that expire. This really brought up the argument of who owns the content created to the table whether intentional or not. This really was not a good idea to have that argument tied to this right from the beginning of the transition. The simple fix to this is set a period of time such as 2 to 3 years as a cycle. When that period of time is reached, the Cloud version changes from V1 to CC V2 and all clients who have subscribed to the Cloud for 18 to 24 months depending on whether 2 or 3 years have the option to purchase a perpetual cloud account status for that version that just rolled over. This should be a simple low cost development project that just updates the signature of the application. Then the cloud server just verifies whether you are licensed for current V2 or a perpetual V1. All features released after V2 is rolled over to will not be available for V1 perpetual licenses. That will also end the support for V1 other than support plans. This will allow clients to own the rights to their media and the ability to continue working with it and give Adobe a bump in revenue every 3 years to justify such a plan. Whether a new feature is added right when it rolls over wont matter since it's simply for the clients to have the ability to own their media created. That I believe would really end the majority of the negative concern right now from loyal Adobe Clients and still be in the best interest of both parties.
Let this though be a warning to everyone about what is coming. There are way to many advantages and very few if any draw backs for software companies with the cloud delivery model. The piracy and consistent revenue alone is enough to make this industry wide. This started with the Google Laptop and really is just now starting to come to the market. The clock is ticking and the time is coming where it will cost $10 a month just to login to your OS. I really highly suggest people who dont like this start really pushing those in the Linux Arena to get their acts together and start standardizing for development instead of pushing for complete open source. That dream was squashed long ago. Companies have a right to make a profit on their development work and complete open source is way to much of a risk to that.

ITunes thinks songs are missing when they are NOT...

I've written about this in the past and I thought I had fixed it manually. For some reason a large number of my songs (about 1300) in iTunes are not able to be found on the drive when I try to play them. Once I try to play them I get an error message saying "The song "song name" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it" and then the "!" symbol shows up next to the song. The songs files ARE there though.
In the past I thought I solved this problem because I "re-added" using all the songs in my library (about 4500) "File->Add To Library". If the song was one of these "missing" songs it was re-added to the library. The songs that were not "missing" were not re-added. (and again, the song files iTunes is re-adding are the exact song files it is saying aren't there in the first place) After the "re-add" I essentially had two of all the missing songs. One with the "!" and one without it. The newly added songs did not have any of the stats the original song had. So I used a script I was told about that goes through and syncs the song's statistics. Then after the song stats were synced I removed the "!" song from the library. I had to do this one song at a time. Of course, this took a VERY long time and I don't really want to go through it again... especially now that I know it may not be a permanent fix anyway!
However here is something new I noticed now that I have Leopard: The files that are showing up as missing are also the ones that don't have a "thumbnail" icon of the album cover in the finder. Also, if I go into coverflow view in the finder those files don't have the album as the other files do. However, there should be no differences between the files. For example, one album where each song was ripped at the same time in the same way will have some songs that have the cover icon and some that don't.
As I reported last time, this is not specific to one machine and has noting to do with the drive the songs are on. This also was happening on both 10.5.1. and 10.4.11 and lower.
So, why is this happening and how can it be fixed. I'm not going to re-import the songs because then I loose all my stats, ratings, etc and have to re-do the long method of fixin the stats.. There needs to be some way to permanently fix this problem. Is it with the song files or the library? Is there some sort of validation script that can be run?
Oh, on a side note... pre-leopard the "!" would show all the time. Now, if I close iTunes and re-open the "!" are gone until I try to play the song that should have the "!". This makes things even more challenging because I can't quit iTunes if I want to know which songs are "missing".

I have this same issue. I use an external HD connected to an Airport Extreme Base station to store my music. On Tiger 10.4.11 iTunes created a music database just fine and found every mp3. I just installed Leopard last night and left iTunes to create its database overnight. It found every song, but there are plenty with the exclamation just as you described. If I want to play these songs I must hit "Yes" to locate the song manually. I can then play any other song with an exclamation point in that particular album, but if I go to try to play another song with an exclamation point from another album I must repeat the process again.
It's definitely a problem with Leopard as I just got my mac back from the Apple store with a replaced hard drive. I created the iTunes database in Tiger on one day, then the next decided to purchase and install Leopard. So one day passed between each instance of building the database and it worked fine on a clean install of Tiger but not on a clean install of Leopard.

hi.... i coppied the recovery files and folders into an external hard drive, and removed recovery partition and then formated the computer... now I can't recover my computer to original (factory) since I don't have recovery manager...

Missing Recovery Partition and Unrecognized File Systems

So, a long time ago I accidentally deleted my recovery partition and have recently been trying to fix it so that I can upgrade my OS to Mavericks. After browsing around here I found the Recovery Partition Creator 3.7 and used it to create a new recovery partition. Using the diskutil list command everything seemed to be fine and it looked like the partition was successfully created so I tried reinstalling OS X Lion by holding command R at startup. Doing so brought up the internet recovery menu and I selected reinstall Lion which was still unsuccessful because "a recovery partition could not be created". So, I decided to check in disk utility to see what might be wrong and I used the disk utility debug command in order to access disk utility's debug menu and show all the hidden partitions. Now, looking at these partitions I see two hidden partitions: disk0s1 which is an EFI partition, and disk0s3 which is the Apple Boot Partition that was created by Recovery Partition Creator 3.7. After verifying the partitions, disk utility is telling me that both my EFI and apple boot partitions have unrecognized file systems, my Macintosh HD partition is fine. At this point I do not know what to do.
Below are photos of the diskutil list and of what disk utility is showing me for the two hidden partitions.
For reference I am running OSX Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) on a early 2011 13 inch Macbook Pro (Base Model).
Bootrom version: MBP81.0047.B27
SMC Version: 1.68f99

Just an update, I went ahead and installed Lion again over the existing TM restored installation using the Lion Update file and at least File Vault is working. Interestingly, I still do not have a Recover partition so obviously something new for Apple Support to learn.

Missing external partition

I have an external drive which has two partitions, both showing up in the finder when it is turned on. While trying to open a file from one of the partitions I thought I saw a puff like a cloud emanating from where the cursor was and when I returned to the finder, that particular partition was no longer showing. Both partitions are still visible on the desktop however.
Any ideas on how I can get the partition to show in the finder again?

If you mean the Finder window sidebar, Finder->Preferences->Sidebar->toggle the various settings. Alternatively, drag the Desktop icon back into the sidebar (that's a WAG, since I've turned off the sidebar in Finder windows).
