Think I made a mistake...

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can shed some light on an issue for me. I've been a Mac user for the past 3 years or so and for the most part, I've been very pleased.
I talked my aunt into purchasing an iMac less than 30 days ago and she's had nothing but issues with it - does Mac have a 'national' return policy? or is it store to store? I regret the day I introduced her to the product. She calls on me for some 'tech support' but there's only so much I can do. A machine that new should not be freezing up and shutting down. I can't imagine the she needs to reinstall her OS but I don't know. She's in her 60's and has limited computer knowledge and she's also the first one to say she's short on patience. Nonetheless, a brand new iMac shouldn't be freezing up should it?
The iMac I have now is my second one - the first one, did the same thing only I had mine for 3-4 months before it froze. My Mac store replaced my machine, no questions asked, but even now my screen will just go to black sometimes for no apparent reason. Do I need to tell her to go back to the store she bought it from? The other thing, she bought the unit in New England and has since moved down south...ugh.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

1) You did not make a mistake! Any new computer or OS has an expected learning-curve, about 1-2 mos. depending on the user. As mentioned, get her comfortable with the 90-day phone support. (Try support lines with many PCs, and virus problems . . . ugh).
2) You did not make a mistake! Another support option: both of you set up iChat . . . not only do you get to "visit" more, but, you can also do iChat Screen Sharing (this was great for helping my brother-in-law, and mom to tutor them over the web)
3) You did not make a mistake! How computer-savvy is this new user . . . very, or limited with computers (like many, many people can be)? The intent of this question is by no means to knock her skills, but . . . This is perhaps a "wetware" (human) vs. hardware/software issue, no? With any computer, there are lots of problems to stumble upon . . . as a previous poster mentioned, she should get on the messageboards in her local area and find a good MUG!
Let us know how she's progressing! Get that Auntie of yours on iChat!

  • Okay Im thinking I made a mistake, I purchased and ipad 2 and now don't know what to do with it. I turned it on and it won't do anything but show the plug and itune symbol?  Can someone tell me what to do?

I don't know what to do with my ipad2?

I'm guessing you did not buy the iPad from Apple. If you did not buy it from Apple, it may very well have an older software version. Only iOS 5 or later is PC independent. If you have an earlier version, a computer with iTunes loaded is required.

Well this is my first MAC and I think I made a mistake. When you click on the finder and under devices, the Mac HD is gone. I tried to place it on the desktop but it went up to a cloud of smoke. How can I get it back??? Thanks

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

I made the mistake of resetting my iPod to factory defaults. Now it will only partially sync to my music library. I continually get an error message saying that certain songs are not authorized for my computer, although they are in the iTunes library on the computer and will play. It's these songs that won't transfer to the iPod. I have deauthorized and re-authorized the computer but no joy. Any ideas?

    Hello there DesertRat71,
I was thinking that some of the songs in your library may have been purchased under a different apple id. You have already done the first thing I would have done by de authorizing and re authorizing. To verify this, highlight one of the songs that will not sync over and use File>Get Info. Here is the help menu link for it if you need it help://bookmark='https://help.apple.com/itunes/mac/11.0/help/index.html?localePa th=English.lproj#itns2937'
In the Summary section there will be an Apple ID entry. If it shows something different than what you are currently using then I recommend signing into the Apple ID it shows and authorizing the computer for that one as well.
    All the best,
    Sterling

I backed up 6000+ photos from Snow Leopard iMac v.10.6.7 to new Western Digital "My book" successfully, I think! But when I attempted to COPY my photos to it in order to free up space on my HD, I made a mistake. When I dragged the iPhoto (11) Library to My Book and re-named it to "iPhoto Library.old" nothing happened. So I dragged it again, re-named it again (same name--that was the mistake, I guess!) and then it took about an hour+ to do its thing. When finished and I launched iPhoto by holding down the Option key, the dialog window listed two libraries: "iPhoto Library.old" and iPhoto Library.old (default)". So now what? It seems that I still have the originals when I open iPhoto, and do I have two copies, also? Should I delete one of them and if so, which one and how? Or should I eliminate both of them and start over again? And if so, how do I do that? Right now, neither my HD nor the My Book have changed the number of GB available or free since before I began this process. Will the numbers only change after I actually delete my original Library AND empty the Trash? I appreciate any light you can throw on this subject for me. I could lug it all to the local Genius Bar, but now I'm afraid to unplug anything for fear I'll lose everything! Thank you, you wonderful, bright people. (An 83-year-old Grandma, trying to keep up a little, at least)

Oh my! Obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. But I do know that my goal was to do both---backup AND free some space. My iMAc is old (2006) and I upgraded it a year or so ago to Snow Leopard. I didn't think I had the capability of backing up without an external drive, but  maybe I do since I upgraded. Do I?
But I bought this My Book mostly for freeing space because I like to make cards in Photoshop and I'm forever running out of space when I get too many layers (don't really know what I'm doing there, either).
Is there some way that I can rectify my mistakes and start all over?
Thank you so much for  beng so prompt with your reply and patient with mine. I tried for so long to see the dialog box with the library listings. When I launched iPhoto, even with holding down the Option key, it kept immediately launching into the full screen. Finally, after an hour of doing it over and over again, it worked when I held the key down for 5 minutes. Then when I was typing my reply, I kept getting a message to "Request Time Out." Didn't know how to do that, so kept hitting the OK button and kept typing for another half minute. Finally, when ready to send, Safari couldn't do it. "Try again" exasperated me until I realized I would have to begin again and use Firefox. When I got there and ready to type, I got the message  that my message had been retrienved and did I want to use it?!!
So your kindness is very much appreciated.

here's how to swap: Order product | Platform, language swap
but i think your license is dual platform.  download the mac version and see if your serial number will activate.  if not, at least, you'll have the 30 day trial to use while waiting for your platform swap.

So lately I decided I was tired of Tiger, and decided I would upgrade to Leopard.  Well I made the mistake of erasing the hard drive before I made sure it would work. Well now like the installer was before it failed. And now when I boot I get the normal finder/question mark flashing folder. I also found a power Mac g4 that needs a new operating system. It's running 9.2. It's going to my grandma as a gift. I really need help.

I think you'll need to find a Retail 10.5 Disc.
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

  • Made a mistake calibrate...should I do it again?

    Hi,
A week ago I got a new i5 base Macbook Pro (with a 1440 screen as had to buy from a bricks and mortar Apple store, very happy with it though!!).
Anyway, I made a mistake when calibrating yesterday. Whilst leaving it to re-charge after the 5hr rest I caught the power cable so it dis-connected.
So, what do you think I should do? Re-calibrate now, or just do it next month? I'm just worried about unduly draining the battery if I try calibration again.
    Thanks!
P.s. Coconut battery is currently saying the battery capacity is 97% or 6698

Hi "Whilst leaving it to re-charge after the 5hr rest I caught the power cable so it dis-connected."
It isn't an issue, it will not affect the calibration process.

  • I made a mistake when activating new iphone 5 from I cloud backup.

I made a mistake and did not do a current icloud backup on my 4s before activating my iPhone 5. I just wasnt thinking... I set up the iPhone 5 from an icloud backup that was 4 months ago... Now all of my text messages from after that are missing. I need a lot of the missing texts. Even though my 4s does not have any service all of the texts are still on it... Can I get all the missing texts on to my iphone 5??  Thanks!!

  • Looking for some assurances that I haven't made a mistake switching to Mac.

Bought an intel-powered IMac 9 days ago and love everything about it's look, functionality, etc.. Only problem: I've had a bout of "Application has closed unexpectedly" occcurrances while using Safari (while at AOL.com deleting emails from aol account) and while editing pics in iPhoto. As this happened time and again, I got a sad, sinking feeling that I'm headed for the same frustrations that I've had w/ every Windows machine I've ever owned. Ugh!..I switched to Apple for the specific purpose of avoiding crashes!!! Apple support walked me through steps to fix (removed/updated Quicktime, and check a few other things..). They were very helpful, but... I absolutely detest having to do this. Other than Office:Mac, i've added nothing to this machine! I'm really stressed about this. I paid far more for this than I would have for a Windows machine simply because I had heard that Apple machines don't do this sort of thing!!
Please tell me that this is normal and expected with a new machine and not a harbinger of more complicated problems to come!! I'm hoping that once resolved, I won't much more of this.. On the other hand, if many of you feel that this issue is a bad omen, I'll take the machine back while I still can. ..What a pity though, it's truly been a joy to use so far.

Hi syd123! And Welcome to Discussions!
No you haven't made a mistake! You will love your Mac!
Deleting AOL Mail, crashes Safari (Consolidation)
It seems the most recent Safari, and or 10.4.4, update has created this problem.
Apple & AOL are both aware of this, but, as far as I know, no correction has been implemented.
Here are some of the work arounds, that I have been able to discern from the various posts regarding this issue.
    Use the FIREFOX BROWSER.
    Use your AOL Mail program.
Use this utility AOL SERVICES ASSISTANT, to set up Apple Mail, to access AOL Mail.
Access the AOL Mail thru Classic AOL Webmail.
And here are links, to the various threads, discussing this issue.

    Hi Elaine
    Here si what I do:
Since I tend to message with teh same people I leave the messages available to me.  If you are in one conversation with "Karen"  and want to message with "Kathy" tap the message back arrow and select Kathy.
As always just be careful to rememeber who you are messaging to!

I got a new Iphone and I made a mistake by creating a new Itunes user, and I can't access all of my music on my old account can I move it to my new account ?

This doesn't really seem like an iTunes Match question, but ... at this time Apple IDs can not be merged.
However, it is possible to sync the iPod with iTunes to add the music to the library.
