Thinkcentre M57 dead after changing settings in BIOS

Hello,
I have am M57 tower that has been running great for many years but now all of a sudden after changing a few settings in BIOS (I did not upgrade the bios) all I can get the machine to do is power cycle over and over again with fans at full speed. I attempted the steps here http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/A-M-and-Edge-Series-ThinkCentre/M57-BIOS-Update-Failure/td-p/55840 but no luck. I did not change any hardware recently. I have also removed the descrete video card in it but there is no difference. When I attempt to recover the BIOS via a usb desette drive it beeps once then reads the disk for about 5 to 10 seconds with the fans at full speed. Any help would be appreshiated. I never knew you could brick a system by changing settings.

Odd that you followed procedure and that still didn't do it. Change the coin battery on the motherboard, restart pressing F1. Once into the BIOs with a new battery installed, go to the last page and select Load Default Settings, and then select F10 to Save Changes and exit. If all this was caused by a weak battery, this should fix it.
You can find coin batteries (CR2032) at Home Depot or even Walmart.

I can't change any cmos settings either. If I change anything in the bios at all it won't boot. it will turn on but won't boot. so I have to clear the cmos to get into windows and my 2500+ Barton is running at 1050mhz because I can't set the fsb to 166(333) like I should be able to. And I just bought the chip yesterday.

Well, its not yet conclusive that your BIOS is bad, all we are saying at this stage is that with a new CPU, you can change settings but it will not Boot. Correct?
When you update a BIOS you only do not always change all the data stored in the memory.
I have, before now, resorted to to using the emergency recovery feature of the BIOS that is well documented.
This way, subject to the memory not having any bad addresses, you completely re-program the BIOS I.C.
Have you tried  BIGRHINO suggestion first?

  • [Athlon64] sytem wont start after i change settings in bios

hi i have had this wierd problem with my system for a while know and the problem is this:
when i change agp apaterur size or change the ddr voltage in bios the system wont start so i have to nullifie the bios to make the system go up again.
the system works just fine otherwise.
it is really anoying and wierd so i would really appreciate if i could get some help with this one.
    thx

Some cards won't work with some voltages or apatures no matter what you do. Basically just reset the Bios with the jumper and only do so when the machine is unplugged or you can damage it. Reset the Bios and set to a known working setup on the apature. Leave the voltage be unless you know what you are about as that can fry a vid card or damage other parts if it is set wrong.

  • Unable to connect even after changing settings as advised

I recently talked my mother into buying an Apple and used iChat A/V as the primary excuse. However, we are unable to connect on iChat (through AIM), like many others I have read about in this forum.
I am using a Motorola DSL modem, style MSTATEA and a Belkin Wireless G router.
I have changed my Quicktime Settings to 1.5, my AIM Proxy to 443, and my bandwith to 500 as suggested. Here is the log:

    Ok,
If it is this particular Motorola then it routes
    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Motorola/2210-02-1006/iCh at.htm
The link is a page on a site about setting up Port Forwarding.
The Main purpose for you though is the default access info so you can get to the Set Up pages.
Now as set up pages are never the same and can even vary from the same manufacturer it is worth checking all the tabs at the top and all the buttons on the right of this one and any links in the main section to see if it has UPnP
UPnP (Universal Pug and Play) is an Enable/Disable option of allowing the apps on a computer to control which ports are open. (They close after a period of NON use)
In the firewall section you may find the device's own firewall has 4 levels.
This should be at Low of Off for iChat.
If you can find UPnP enable that and Save Settings for any changes you make.
The same site's front index page list many more Belkins than Motorolas.
Which model specifically do you have ?
Having two devices that route causes it's own problems for iChat.
Like you say you have done for the Mac you should set the Modem to allow Static Routing (Called Manually on the Mac) to the Belkin.
This means finding out the Modem's IP (in the first link), the Subnet Mask it uses and the DNS Servers from the ISP.
This info needs to be copied in the corresponding boxes that the Belkin has for the Mac's Network Preferences and tabs after you change it from Getting an IP Automatically or similar phrase.
    Summary,
    Confirm Belkin Model.
Set up Belkin and Motorola/Netopia to be Static Routing
Open ports in both to allow iChat (using UPnP where possible)

  • No display after changing settings. Can't get to safe mode to change it back. Help please.

    Hi,
I was trying to change my display to an external monitor going through a laptop dock.  I had managed it before without the dock.  I changed something in the display properties wizard and now have no display either on the external monitor, or on the built in screen.  I have tried every combination of going through the dock or directly plugged in, and also with no monitor.  I cannot get a display.  I have tried to get into safe mode but cannot - the screen goes black immediately after the lenovo logo goes off.
It seems a bit silly that this is possible really with a "are you sure you can see this?" before confirming (like when you change screen resolutions).
Any ideas?  Really stuck.  The machine is only 2 months old.

Sorry.  I know it hasn't been long, but I'm really banging my head against the wall with this.
Am I correct in this?  The G500 can't boot from a DVD or USB stick?
I'm kinda running out of options.

  • Monitor won't display after changing settings

I changed the settings on my Mac Pro and apparently they are not correct for that monitor. The display is blank and now I can't get anything to display in order to reset display settings.
How can I get it to display again?

Boot into Safe Mode, and reset your settings:

  • Time dead after changing system time

    Hi,
I have read many posts on this but still can't find a perfect solution.
    1. tried using thread.sleep(1000) to cause a method to run every 1 sec.. but after reading online.. it seems to be a lousy design as it depends on the system cpu speed. sometimes it will stop for more than 1 sec.
    2. tried :
    private ScheduledExecutorService scheduler
    private ScheduledFuture task
    public classname(){
    scheduler = Executors.newSingleThreadScheduledExecutor();
    task = scheduler.scheduleAtFixedRate(methodToRun,1,1,TimeUnit.SECONDS)
This works but if i changed the system time for multiple times, it will just stop my program...
Did i use ScheduledExecutorService or thread right ?

after reading online.. it seems to be a lousy design as it depends on the system cpu speed.God help us! Where on earth did you read that? It depends on the system clock, and it isn't guaranteed to retun in exactly the time specified.
sometimes it will stop for more than 1 sec. That's what its specification says.
This works but if i changed the system time for multiple times, it will just stop my program...No, it won't 'stop' your program, it will foul up the executor until it adjusts to the new time.
There is nothing in standard Java that guarantees exact timing. If you need that you need a real-time version of Java. But probably you don't need that at all. Impossible to say without some context.

  • Satellite Pro L40 wont boot after changing BIOS settings

Alright changed a few settings in the bios last night and now when I boot I get a black screen lights flash and that hard drive light comes on but nothing on screen.
There was no password on bios,... how would I reset BIOS to normal?
I put a windows disk on I can hear the disk spinning but nothing on the screen
(I think I have come to the right place on the forum)
Its a Toshiba Satellite Pro L40 model psl4be.
    Thanks

    >There was no password on bios,... how would I reset BIOS to normal?
You can set the BIOS to default ONLY inside the BIOS so you have to access the BIOS pressing F2 or at the beginning of the booting order
But I doubt that this problem is related to the BIOS.
Maybe its just a simple bad luck that this issue happened just exactly after changing something in BIOS.
Try to connect an external monitor and check if you can see something on 2nd display.

  • KT6V 7021 - OnBoard NIC "dead" after BIOS 2.00 update ... any thoughts?

    Hi!
Just flashed KT6V BIOS 2.00 and now my onboard nic suddenly stopped working.
The network adapter gets recognized by Windows as usual, but although I do get a dhcp lease from my server I'm unable to connect to any share on it. It's also impossible to surf the web or to simply ping any local/remote host. If I try to connect to the system from any other workstation on the lan it doesn't work either.
The network status only shows a great amount of sent packages - caused by AVAST! as it tries to look for an update on boot - but only "0" received.
I flashed the BIOS from the emergency diskette and did a CMOS clear (Jumper) afterwards. And yes, I did disconnect my PSU from the wall socket.
Since I need network access to the system I tried stepping back to BIOS 1.90 but with no avail - the onboard nic doesn't receive a single paket after it has got it's dhcp lease.
Any clue what might be wrong and how I'm able to get my nic back to work?
Thank you in advance for any useful help.

    Hi Fredrik.
    Quote
So if you were to downgrade BIOS problems would go away, right?
I have already downgraded to BIOS 1.90 and the problem stayed the same - the onboard nic is still dead beef.
    Quote
When clearing CMOS there can be no el. left in your system, so unplug power cable etc.
As mentioned in my first post I _have_ unplugged the power cord from the wall socket.
    Quote
If the new BIOS would affect NIC card... Hm, it is hard to see quite how.
I can't think of any reason either, however, the nic went dead after updating to BIOS v2.00. I assume that there must be some kind of "network code" inside the bios which has to do with the onboard nic - otherwise I'm unable to explain why the MAC address suddenly changed to "11:22:33:44:55:66". If I would only have a clue on how to access and/or flash the nic ... ???
    Quote
Is there any error marks for the nic in say Device Manager, if you get that far?
Nope, there is no question or exclamation mark on the network card in the device manager. Windows thinks the card is working, but in reality it isn't. As already stated: No traffic from/to the network.

  • T43p-blue screen after changing display settings

Display turned blue after changing resolution obviously to some wrong settings, how to revert the process when cannot see anything but the start up sequence?

go into the safe mode and change the resolution, or at least reinstall the driver. Press F8 during initial startup of the laptop.

  • Mobo doesn't "see" hdd after changing BIOS

I have this strange problem. After changing my mobo's BIOS couple of days ago I had a strange "lack of hdd" problem with the new BIOS. I turned off my computer and turned it on again - I was really amazed to see Windows booting normally - everything suddently was ok. I thought that this is a strange behaviour of the BIOS ( 'couse it's probably BIOS thats respnosible for looking for hardware while booting the computer ) and I decided to downgrade the BIOS and to install the old version - the previous one ( from 1.6 to 1.5 ). So I did.
For a while I thought everything is like it used to be before playing with BIOS .... till today :(
I wanted to restart my Computer and while booting the same thing happened - it was written that there is no HDD in the computer and so it cannot boot the OS - I tried to do smth inside the BIOS but I couldnt do anything - like if it was really disconnected - strange thing that the DVD-ROM which is attached using the same IDE cable to the mobo was present in the BIOS ....
I remembered that the last time when it happened the turnOFF->turnON method worked - this time it was ok as well.
But it's still a problem for me - why does it happen anyway ? Did someone have his kind of problem ?
Can I do anything about it ?
PS. my mobo is K7T266Pro2-U with the BIOS ver.1.50 (downgraded from 1.60), OS is WindowsXP with SP1
The HDD is Seagate 20GB but I don't think it is it's fault.
    Thank you in advance !

Thanks maesus for answering so soon.
I think I'll to just that - I understand that the Quick Boot option turned on omites something while booting the comp. ?
Hope the computer won't boot much slower after turning off that option.
PS. do you think a new Hard-Disc would solve the problem ?
hope the hdd isn't dying  ;(

  • My Qosmio F10 is dead after Bios Update

My Qosmio F10 is dead after BIOS update ... it doesn't work anymore .. i update the bios from 1.10 to 1.20
the switch Led is always orange...
what can i do to make it work again ? or return the 1.10 version?

    Hi
You can check many postings in this forum about the BIOS upgrade procedure.
Mostly the users damage the notebook because of wrong BIOS or wrong BIOS procedure.
If the notebook is dead after this procedure so it could be a damage motherboard.
In this case only the Toshiba service partner can solve this issue. ;(

  • Canon 5D Mark III back screen is dead after tethered capture with Lightroom 4.3

I was successfully shooting tethered using Lightroom 4.3 (PC laptop with Windows 7) and my Canon 5D Mark III, however when I disconnected the cable I was no longer able to see anything on the back of the camera, no image playback, no menu, no live view, nothing.  How do I recover the functionality of the camera's back screen.  I tried removing the battery for a while, replacing the battery, taking out the memory card.  Don't know how to "reset" the camera.  Note the top display on the camera and the view finder display work fine, I can change settings with my dials.  Was working in Manual Exposure mode, and also tried Aperture Priority.  If I reconnect to the laptop I can still work in tethered mode, but after disconnecting the camera back is still dead.
Was I somehow supposed to disconnect the camera from tethered capture before disconnecting the cable?

It is probably not related to your tethering session in Lightroom. It is also unlikely to be related to the order you unplugged things. (Unless you yanked the cable and damaged some electronics).
Have you tried pulling both batteries for 30 minutes (The regular battery and the quarter-sized watch battery)?  Pull those and the memory card. Unplug all cables and let it sit for a while and then replace the batteries.

  • Message Server Unreachable (after changing IP address at host)

    Hi guys,
I changed the IP address in my server. According to note 403708, I updated the new IP address in /etc/hosts. The note also suggests me to change in /etc/services but I see no IP address for me to update.

Yes I'm on Windows, the path that i'm refering is:

Anyway my prob is fixed now. Probably the problem is due to I did not restart the server after changing the IP. Anyway everything looks pretty fine now
