Thinking about giving up...

I have many years of experience doing UNIX/Linux (and way back Mac) admin work but Leopard Server has me wanting to quit altogether. It started, as these types of things often do, with the seductive promise of an all in one server with georgous black glossy blurbs.
Our small company was thinking about Exchange and the whole windows server setup, but after pricing the CALs and the machines it was put on hold. I decided to risk buying a mac mini and 10-user Leopard Server with my own $ since the boss didn't think it would work. I was excited to have an integrated package rather than building individual open source services, after 3 weeks I am no longer excited.
Here is what I wanted:
* OD Master acting as PDC for windows users. (No Legacy 10.4 stuff and no AD stuff - should be easy)
* Self Signed Certs (They are for internal servers for crying out loud, why do I have to pay for internal only server certs)
* DNS (didn't want it but you need the d*mn reverse entries for anything to work)
[the reverse zone editor doesn't work correctly, it had "example.com" still stuck in the arpa zone file, but it did not show up in the zone editor tab - this happened twice and is due it seems to the auto reverse zone creation functionality of the GUI editor]
* iCal
* Mail Services
* Wiki/Blogs
* SMB shares
* Have some system stuff running off an external RAID-1 firewire drive rather than the internal drive.
(I gave up on this after foolishly trying to use the "choose" buttons on some of the services thinking that I could just point (say mail or web or iCal) to a non-standard folder and it would do the permission and ownership tweaks necessary to make the chosen folders actually work for said services - ha!
Well, after 5 re-installs I read in the discussions here that iCal doesn't work with Kerberos
OD doesn't work with self signed certs, nor does the rest of the system seem to either - I saw the discussion where some people got it working. The thing that gets me is you have a certificate assistant GUI and cert management "tab" on the Server Admin yet neither of them can do what needs to be done to make a self signed cert work with the Leopard Server components. Why bother having those tools? Torture is the only reason I can think of.
When I turn off SSL and set everything to cleartext auth it seems to almost kinda work...
Sorry for the rant, there is more but it is another 7:45 AM morning at the end of a reinstall night.
Does anyone know how to get iCal and/or wikis working with Kerberos?
Does anyone know why the system arbitrarily picks an IP address to associate with the main "bolded" entry in the ServerAdmin->Settings->Network tab? I wanted my ns and mx to be on a separate IPs from the rest of the services but the server decided that the mx IP would be the "bold" IP not the one that is associated with the main network interface so now all my kerberos principals read [email protected], not [email protected].

First, be aware that you probably do not have unlimited data on your phone.  In addition, using your phone as a data modem for your computer requires a seperate data account.
As far as using the coffe shop's open wi-fi...are you completely unaware of the security implications of using it?  It is an open hot spot, and you are prone to spoofing, man-in-the middle, DOS and other attacks.
If I were you, I would bundle comcast cable and internet...go for the highest speed package you can afford, and make sure that you are indeed getting unlimited data.  When at home, you can use both yrou phone and your computer on your wireless network.
Your smartphone, even with a dock, will never replace a computer.  You need more storage than is available on your phone.

  • Thinking about giving gentoo a go

I've always thought about trying out gentoo but never really had a reason to try; arch works just fine for me. However, I was wondering if it would be worth it now that my specs are a bit lower: 1.06GHz Dual core, Intel 495 graphics, 2GB RAM. I figured that if I compiled everything from source it would run a bit snappier. If so, how long would it take to compile (this would all be in July/August) a fully working KDE 4.1 enviroment and would gentoo even be desirable as I go off to college in September?

brebs wrote:People often notice better performance, simply by changing distro, because reformatting means getting rid of the built-up disk fragmentation that Linux zealots pretend doesn't exist.
It's not the linux thing anyway—it's the fs thing . Some fs'es are predestined to fragment files some are smarter. Granted: when the space is about to run out the files will have to be fragmented .
@Reasons: If you have time and will—go for it! It's a good thing to experiment!
If it comes to performance gain, frankly I don't think it will be visible over general arch performance. I've done a switch from gentoo to arch about 2 years ago and haven't noticed any slowdown or stability degradation. But it's up to you to verify it! After all you don't have to get rid of arch to try gentoo as long as your disk resources are critically low .
About compilation time I can say that on my ol' Athlon XP 1700+ with 256 megs of ram it took me about 4-5 days to build a working system with… I can't remember gnome or kde. Some of this time was idle waiting for me to get back from somewhere . You can considerably shorten this time by using distcc (check gentoo pages for details). I know a case when a guy installed gentoo with x and some de in about 3 hours with the help of his friends machines and distcc grid (I was a student back then and this guy lived in a dormitory—a nice place to get both: cheap processing power and windows viruses ).

  • Thinking about switch to mac

I am in need of a new computer. I am a long time user of pc's. But the company i have been using the customer service has went downhill. And of course everyone knows windows has it's many problems. So I was thinking about giving the mac a try this time. So I thought who better to ask than the people who have had some trouble with their mac. And see if they still recommend it. Little info about me I have a small constuction company. So it will mainly be used for accounting type things. Tracking money, bid, estimates etc. I seen the imac comes with Quicken installed. How does this program work on the mac? I use it now on my pc. And it does pretty much everything i need. I guess my main thing is how is this computer for running a small company? Or is there a different mac that would work better for this? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can run a business on a Mac. Quicken is available on Mac as is QuickBooks. Are you running a business using Quicken? In any case, the features are not the same for the Mac versions. It seems many people complain about the lack of abilities in the Mac version of QuickBooks Pro quite often. There is another program called MYOB. Not my cup of tea but some like it. Point is there are small business financial software packages for the Mac. The other programs like Keynote, Pages, Outliner, Mail, Safari, iPhoto all help in running your business as do many dashboard widgets.
Next, the new iMacs have moved onto Intel processors and Universal Binary. Some applications are Universal already and some require Rosetta to run in the Mac OS. Unless you are a professional or at least use the Adobe products on a regular basis you don't really see a slowdown. Separate from this is a downloadable beta program called Boot Camp. This allows you to boot into Windows XP (which you have to purchase and install). Once in XP you can run your Windows apps just like you did on that old PC. So, you could just bring over your PC files (oh wait, do PCs have the ability to migrate like a Mac does?) Anyway...
Then, you need to find which printer it is and determine if it is just a Dell shell over another manufacturers product in which case the driver may very well already be in the Mac OS. Again, if you are running XP then you should be able to use it anyway. If you really want to buy a new printer then look around the online retailers. They often bundle a printer and/or RAM with the purchase of a new iMac.

I am just about giving up!  I have upgraded Pages to 0.9 (4.3).  Now when I copy text from an incoming email and paste it into Pages it pastes in as an Object and I can't work on it.  It has a border round it and corner markers.  I have never had this problem before.  I have looked at every conceivable thing but cannot find how to get rid of this Object and just paste in the wanted text.  If I fiddle and fiddle within this text I can eventually get a cursor and work on the text - but how on earth can I get rid of the surrounding box?
I don't know if this is at all clear but I can't think of any other way to describe this - but it looks like this in Pages with corner and top, bottom and side markers.

Peter hello - I have been copying and pasting for as long as I can remember and it has NEVER done this before - so why now!? Anyway, Jerry has told me about Paste and Match Style --- yet another new thing!
I have also discovered that I don''t need to hold down Option when I go to Save to get Save As -  I can hold down 4 keys (shift, option, command and S) and it will bring up Save As!!
    Thanks for your response.

  • Thinking about Moves with my Plan and Future, Help Appreciated

OK so this was the deal with my plan currently, is that right now im looking to save money on my phone bill every month and im being given the big run around with my Talk/Text/Data Promotion where i keep being told my data discount of 9.99 would come off and so far this month too it did not come off. The woman in Promotions department apparently fixed my account which not sure if she did and the problem with the whole thing is that different reps keep telling me i can only get my employee discount on my voice or the data discount which of course is wrong because the promo woman over the phone told me i can receive both and the loyalty reps over the phone keep giving me different stories and im tired of it. This was the reason i extended my contract for a bit to get this discount and its getting very frustrated about it!!
The other thing was i was thinking about switching carriers when my contract is up because my bill has been pretty high the past couple of months and it makes no sense to early terminate my 2nd line because my ex gf upgraded to a smartphone and jacked up the fee. My mom hardly uses the 2nd line and i would like to cancel it but because its too high it makes no point to do that since both our contracts are up in a year. I was thinking about going to a basic phone to cut my data plan prices because the only cheapest verizon has is the 30 dollar plan. I don't use my data plan too much but i heard if i go to a basic phone and within 14 days i go back to a smartphone i can get my unlimited data back. So idk if this is true or not. But its gotten to the point that these smartphone plans and contracts are a bit much now. So if there is a Verizon rep that can chime in and see what can be done or discuss with me about options, that would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise i just had to vent about the issue with my current bill at this moment. So just was saying.

To answer SuzyQ, my ex gf is off my account because of problems with her being on it (being late all the time, messing up my credit) and she wasn't choosing to fix her problems by doing and AOL because of her credit which Verizon wanted 400 and she didn't want to do it. Long story short, she lied to me about her AOL deposit amount just to stay on my account for a few more years (hence the early upgrade). So thats why shes no longer with my account.
To answer AZS, your right my mom HAS a basic phone now and does not have data. My problem is that i have data on my plan which im trying to cut back on the cost of the plan and so far, i really wish Verizon would let me have that Talk/Text/Data promotion where it was 9.99 for the unlimited data and it would really help my bill alot. Of course i had a hard time getting it and one of the reps who i dealt with about getting it was very rude with me and she didn't care about satisfying the problem or the plan with me.
But both lines have less than a year left so when the time comes, its time to move to something cheaper and better for me no contract wise. Unless anyone has something else to throw in their opinion of.

  • I have an iphone 4 and thinking about getting an ipad2.  Can i use the same apple id for both devices?

I have an iphone 4 and I am thinking about getting an ipad2.  Can I use the same apple id and itunes account with both of them?  Will my contacts and apps transfer over to the iPad2?

Yes. I use the same Apple ID on four different iDevices. You can sync the contacts with iCloud or with your computer and have them on both devices. You can sync all of the apps as well. If the apps are not in iTunes on your computer - you can download them to the iPad with the same Apple ID. You can also restore the iPad from a backup of the phone to transfer your settings, app data and your contacts.
iPhone only apps will be half size on the iPad screen but will still work as long - you can enlarge the size of the apps - but they will be pixelated on the screen.

  • I cant sign in to i-cloud with my new apple id  i signed out of the old one and when i try to log in i just get the 'thinking about it' logo. this lasts for ages and doesn't sign me in.  help!

Hi, i have recently purchased an i-phone 4s and had been merrily playing away and set up an i cloud account.  However when i tried to access i cloud from my pc i couldn't verify it.  I had to change my apple id because i no longer had access to my old e-mail.  I managed to sort out my i-phone and change all the  accounts to my new apple i.d (except game centre? don't know how to do that yet.)  but when i signed out of my old i-cloud account on my pc and tried to sign in with my new apple id it just tries to connect (i get the i'm thinking about it wheel) for ages; not allowing me to log on.
    Help!

Content (apps, music, ibooks, films etc) is tied to the account that originally downloaded it, so if the iBooks app was downloaded using the account that you used to share with your ex then only that account can download updates to it. As it's a free app you could delete it and re-download it under your own account - and then re-download your ibooks into it (or copy the books to your computer's iTunes first via File > Transfer Purchases and then sync them back to the app).

While it is against the TOU of these boards to speculate on future products/updates what Thomas said is right: FCPX is quite a new product and it doesn't make any sense to drop it now.
The only thing that MIGHT get dropped at a certain point is support for older hardware/OS as FCP X progresses.

  • Thinking about storing my iPhoto and iTunes on a NAS Drive

    Hi,
I am thinking about buying a LaCie Network Space MAX NAS Drive and I just wanted to know if anyone else is using one and can provide some insights or advice. I have a the following set up:
    - Macbook pro
    - Macbook air
    - Apple TV
    - Airtport Extreme
    - 2 x iPhones
    - iPhoto album over 150Gb
    - iTunes library over 800Gb
I have been running the iPhoto and iTunes off a 1.5tb USB WD external hard drive attached to the Airport USB. It has been working but has been slow but a few days ago the drive became corrupt. I have been able to recover the data but I am now looking at other options for storing iPhoto and iTunes externally.
I can't help but think I am not the only person in this situation. I find managing these large data libraries really annoying and I think apple should be offering a better solution to this problem. I think most peoples' iTunes and iPhoto libraries are too big or getting too big to run on a portable computer's internal hard drive. Anyway that is my moan for this post.
Does anyone have any ideas on a good set up for this situation? And if you are using a LaCie Network Space MAX drive is it working for you?

Same exact problem in my case... thinking same Lacie Network Space could help...
    Any idea ?

I was thinking about getting myself a Video iPod, but then i would hate it if i was to get one let's say this month and next month a new iPod will come out, so should i buy a Video or is there a new iPod coming out anytime soon?
    Thanks.

Unlike some people who come here to ask silly questions.
And Marat Voznyuk, you've been here long enough to know that posting questions asking about future Apple hardware releases is against the forum terms of use. : )

Do you think the monitor, keyboard and mouse will work on it? Would I have to get a hub so I could use the stuff I already have? Is that viewsonic too old to work on it?
What else would I need? Please advise...

    Yes for keyboard and mouse.
The monitor will work if it has an HDMI, VGA ir DVI input. If it only has a VGA input you will need this adopter

I'm thinking about buying a tablet, so was wondering if (a) can I install on a 2nd device (b) can I use the serial number online as I won't beable to install from a CD, and (c) will I beable to choose a mac, after the initial was on a PC???? Thanks Martin

A single user license allows for having activated installations on two machines. An Elements license allows for either platform in many cases (recently not the case from what I've seen).  If you have the disc, see if it contains the Mac installation files... if it does then you should be able to install them via a download as well.  I cannot answer with certainty for the last question since it relies on the previous question.  Personally, I would not let an inexpensive piece of software dictate an expensive hardware purchase decision.

  • I was thinking about buy an 128GB SSD Macbook Pro, will it work with my external hard drive if i plugged it in through USB still?

Well basically I've heard the hype about SSD and i was thinking about buying a mac with a 128GB SSD, but i was wondering, if i plugged in my 320GB external hard drive, would it work with an SSD mac? Or, do i need and internal hard drive for it to be compatible with my external one?

You can replace your internal drive with a SSD and buy an external enclosure for your 320GB from OWC.
    No problems.

  • When prompted to update to 8.0.1 - and I hit install - window just thinks about it and never installs update????

Trying to update to 8.0.1 - when the update window pops up to install I hit "install" as I want the update of course. However, once I hit the install button it can be all day and it sill isn't done installing the update, it just thinks about it...... Make sense? What can I do to get this updated and done? Shouldn't be this tough right?

    Hi ammikolasy-
I'm sorry you had trouble upgrading. There can be a number of different reasons why that happened. I found an article that outlines how to correct the problem:
