Thinking about next logical upgrade

This is while my system is taking three hours to transcode about 50 mins of some ProRes HD footage to SD-DVD. I mainly do photography and am dealing with Nikon D800 raw files, but I do several dance recitals per year and offer SD and Blu-Ray to parents. My current system is about three years old and I've been pretty happy with it, but editing D800 files in Lightroom (DNG conversion and adjustments) and render times are starting to make the machine feel dated.
My current system:
Hardware
Thoughts
CPU: Intel i7 950 @3.07GHz
Seemed like the best bang for the $$ at the time
GPU: GeForce GTX 670
Installed last year and made it so editing HD was not as painful. Dual monitors for editing and HDTV for a preview monitor
MOBO: Intel DX58S02 Extreme
Really liked the connectivity of everything. Raid, USB, eSata. It's been solid
24 gigs of ram
Maxed out
System Drive 2x240 Raid 0
Zippy program loads. Nothing else really goes on this drive
D: 2TD 7200 Work Drive, E: 1TB 7200 Rendered Files Drive
And a Drobo S connected to USB 3 port
I guess it realy comes down to I don't really know what I have. I was thinking a 6 core CPU might be a good upgrade rather than scrap everyhting but the video card and drives, but it looks like 1366 is not anything current and getting a CPU might be harder than I thought. I just am not sure what 2011 MB and CPU to look at that will give the boost in render and make it so I feel like I over spent and am underwhelmed.
I can budget $1000 to $1500 for upgrades.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Scott

  • I am thinking about upgrading my HTC Incredible to a Galaxy SIII

    I love my HTC camera, but constantly losing my 3g capability.  Think its just getting old.  I'm due for an upgrade.  Is the camera any good on this model?  I I saw a thread about poor signal strength.  I live in hills and use my cell for everything.  IS the signal really that poor?

    The camera is one of the best I have seen. As for 3G, A lot of them tend to have weeker/more unstable signal's VS most verizon phones. Mine is mostly fine, but there are users who say it's a big issue. So just test before you buy and if you have issues. Take it back, becuase most likely it's not going to fix itself.
    As for 3G signal in your area, I don't know if it's really that poor or not, but it may be a good idea to check. Becuase there are some places like WV were it's next to none out there. So just think about that as well.

    If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
    If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • Thinking about upgrading my Powerbook G4 hard disk to 160GB

    I am thinking about upgrading my powerbook G4 hard disk to 160GB, or even larger if possible...
    I have checked the macsales.com website and found this seagate 160GB, is it a good choice? Can anyone suggest a better deal or a better choice...?
    but I also notice one thing... it says that any powerbook model prior to 2003 might not support the any hard disk over 120G....
    So I am wondering is my powerbook G4 15inch 1.25GHz SuperDrive model able to have a 160GB hard drive...?
    Thanks a lot!!!!!

    The 1.25Ghz Powerbook came out in fall 2003, so if what MacSales says is true, then it should work.

    Hi,
    This works now. You just need to create your methods and link them in with your case statement as flounder showed you.
    import java.util.Scanner;
    public class CarConfiguration
         public static void main(String[] args)
         int choise = Menu();
         processSelector(choise);
         private static int Menu()
              System.out.println("\nWELCOME TO CAR CONFIGURATION APPLICATION PROGRAM");
              System.out.println("======================================");
              System.out.println(" Enter _1_ to Chasis Type");
              System.out.println(" Enter _2_ to Engine Type");
              System.out.println(" Enter _3_ to Transmission");
              System.out.println(" Enter _4_ to Options ");
              System.out.println(" Enter _5_ to Finish ");
              System.out.println("======================================");
              System.out.print("Select Your Choise: ");
         Scanner input=new Scanner(System.in);
         int choise=input.nextInt();
         return(choise);
         private static void processSelector(int choise)
              switch(choise)
                   case 1: //enter mehtods here and for all other empty cases
                   break;

  • Thinking about moving to Logic Studio

    I am seriously thinking about making the move to Logic having watched all the online videos. LOOOVE those new amps!!!! I am pretty good now with Garageband, but think I am ready for more. So my question is has anyone tried to go to Logic? If you did was it hard to learn? Did you end up going back to Garageband in the end? If Logic is too hard to learn is there anyway I can add more cool amps-and sounds to Garageband without having to learn a whole new software.
    thanks!

    Frank,
    These products have AU's that you use inside garageband. If you are looking for more than guitar sounds as in commercial synths you can try the demos of some frome this site.
    http://www.linplug.com/Download/download.htm
    iCresendo,
    You can get demos of the guitar AU's I think. I don't play guitar so I have to use reFX Slayer2.
    http://refx.com/?lang=en&page=products/slayer2/summary
    I also use Logic studio. I have found that the Lynda modules have helped make it easier to learn.
    http://www.lynda.com/
    Lynda also has learning modules for GB that are pretty good also.
    As far as moving from GB to Logic epress or Studio it depends on how much extra stuff your going to be doing to your tracks. I'm still using GB to make most of my tracks and then going over to Logic to master and add a few things. I really enjoy GB's quickness.
    Whatever guitar apps (AU's) you buy for GB you'll also be able to use in Logic Express and Logic Studio. That is also true for commercial synths.

  • I have a mac and am thinking about upgrading from snowlepard to lion , is it a good idea and hard to adapt to

    i have a mac and am thinking about upgrading from snowlepard to lion , is it a good idea and hard to adapt to

    This is my "About This Mac" ... it shows I have Intel i7 CPU.  If you are running SL, you at least have Intel, but would need at least Core2Duo an 2 GB (most people suggest 4 GB) RAM.
    If you want to run Lion, remember that the discussions in this forum from last summer when Lion first came out (and since) were highly charged at times.  Certain features that vanished or were added caused great heartache for some.  Others love Lion, though.  And some live with the changes waiting for any fixes they would desire.
    Any PPC (PowerPC) applications you depend upon will not work under Lion.  Use this page to see what applications will not run:  http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
    AND
    Recall that you can clone your SL to an external disk to keep it safe.  Then you can "experiment with" the new OSX (Lion or ML) until you know it works for you while still having your old SL safe in case you need it.
    Good luck.

  • I'm thinking about purchasing a 21.5" iMac.  The base model comes with 8GB of RAM, and the RAM is not user-upgradeable down the road.  Is 8GB enough memory or should I upgrade to 16GB?

    I'm thinking about getting a 21.5" iMac which comes with 8GB of RAM.  Unfortunately, the RAM is not user-upgradeable.  Do you think 8GB is enough memory, or should I upgrade to 16GB?  Besides internet surfing and email, I like to play flash games and listen to internet radio.  Occasionally, I might want to stream a movie.  I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me.

    For what you list, 8GB should be adequate. I ran with 4GB without any issue for over a year in my iMac i7 before I added RAM, primarily for running Win 7 via Bootcamp.
    The tasks that need a lot of RAM are typically video editing/production, heavy-duty photo manipulation (not iPhoto or PS Elements), and professional page layout like Adobe Creative Suite. If you think that, down the road, you may want to delve into those fileds with this computer, by all means get the extra RAM.
    I like to play flash games
    I didn't try a lot of Flash games while I still had 4GB RAM but those I tried ran without issue and without causing a non-trivial number of page-outs

  • Thinking about upgrading.

    Hi. I've been using After Effects CS3 for a while now, as I just haven't had the funds to upgrade to CS4.
    I recently got my finances in order and am thinking about upgrading to CS5.
    Can someone briefly explain the differences between CS3 and CS5, and what sort of features CS5 offers?
    Thankyou.

  • Thinking about upgrades to new quantum but..still have eSata

    Hi.
    I'm thinking about upgrading to the new quantum boxes but I curently have about 20 shows on an external eSata that I just setup earlier this year.   I know theres no good way to pull off the shows but was wondering if theres any way to stop recording on the external and dwindle the shows off.
    any thougths are appreciated.
    Thx
    shaun

    My fisrt thought is to say to disconnect the esata drive unless you watch something.
    But then items will be recorded to the local drive that won't transfer either.
    So you either have to watch it all, or lose something when you migrate over.

    I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27” display and a 42” LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs or 1 dvi and 1 vga vs 1 dvi and a mini. I don't do a lot of Final Cut Pro, gaming, etc. I am interested in best value for the graphics card.
    Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
    RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
    ... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
    The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
    If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
    You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • Thinking about upgrading my T61P

    My T61p is not booting and I am thinking about using this as a reason to:
    1. Moving to Windows 7 from Windows XP
    2. Increasing the RAM to as much as my system allows
    3. Installing a larger hard drive.
    My question is how much RAM and what kind is compatible with my system.
    The current hard drive is a SATA.  What hard drives can I use?

    If you will be using 32-bit windows 7, you won't be able to address more than 3GB, no matter how much you install.   If you are using 64-bit, you can use 8GB.   You need DDR-2 RAM that is PC2-5300 or faster. Faster RAM (PC2-5400, PC2-6300, etc) will run at PC2-5300 speed. Some people prefer certain brands. I use whatever is cheapest. You can use any SATA 2.5" drive that is 9.5mm thick.  Again, some people prefer certain brands.  I prefer Western Digital, Fujitsu or Hitachi.

  • Is there anything I can possibly do about these logic boards?

    Ok, I have 4 broken 4th Generation iPods. Two of them are white 20GB models, one is a white 40GB model, and one is a U2 Special Edition 20GB model. All of them have broken logic boards. Every month or so I give them another go to see if I can get any of them working. But, like usual, I tried today and had no luck.
    EDIT: Let me specify, these are all monochrome 4th generation models.
    The difference here (as opposed to previous attempts) is that now I have a working monochrome 4G (meaning a perfect functioning logic board) that I purchased since my last attempt at fixing these (meaning I now have 1 working iPod but still the 4 broken ones). I was able to restore one of my spare hard drives (20GB MK2006GAL model) with firmware version 3.1.1 using this working iPod. I was even able to add songs, and after disconnecting, play them in the working iPod. Not to mention, the hard drive sounds like it is running beautifully.
    So, I thought, "maybe if I plug a 4th gen formatted, working hard drive with the latest 4th gen firmware into one of these corrupted iPods, they'll at least play the music, even if they won't connect to the PC". Wrong. I still get the old routine of Apple logo, folder icon, "Do not disconnect" for about 5 seconds until it resets itself to the Apple logo, a sad face, and finally a low battery sign (regardless of how charged the battery is) in that exact order. This occurs with 3 of the logic boards. The other logic board, which was originally in the U2 iPod, is able to boot up, and choose a language, but the logic board is broken in that the battery is undetected (no charging, and as soon as you unplug it, poof, its gone). I've tried several batteries that I know work; I am 100% positive it is a logic board issue.
    I've tried diagnostic mode on each and every iPod. On the working 4th gen (with functioning logic board), they pass HDD R/W and HDD SCAN. But they never complete on any other iPod; even after an hour, they've done nothing, and act like they have frozen. I've run the 5-in-1 test on each of these, and they all complete fine.
    So... I guess it all comes down to corrupted logic boards prevent the iPod from properly booting, connecting, and completing diagnostic tests. Is there ANYTHING I can do to rewrite or fix these files? Would connecting to a Mac help at all? (I ask because there is no Mac available to me, not even at a local computer store, but if you guys think it would help, I would go out of my way to the Apple store about 1 hour away). I know Mac's use different formats for the hardware, but I thought this was all hard drive related. Thanks for any help/recommendations/etc.
    Oh, one last note, about that logic board that is able to boot but can't detect the battery: It actually can tell if theres a battery there, but it just doesn't... work. Like, if I have a completely dead battery installed, and I try to plug it in, I get the battery with exclamation point icon. If I plug it in with a battery 50% charged, it will boot and the battery icon will show that is it 50% charged, but it won't charge it, and it still turns off it its disconnected. Any help with this would be great as well.

    I tried running the HP tool today, to see if that would help, but it to was unable to detect my iPod.
    I should also point out that Windows can not detect my iPod either (and thus it has no drive assigned to it).
