Thinking about os lion is it any good

i am thinking about os lion is it any good

I find myself turning all the lion features OFF, becuase they are gimmicky. They have done little to improve my workflow.. and I abuse 2 machines daily with cinema 4d, fcpx and abobe, processors HATE me.
After a while, I forgot about mission control, sounds good on paper, but on a macpro with dual screens its more annoying than useful.
Full screen apps..Que? I can handle more than 1 app, I am a human, I can multitask (somewhat).
Launchpad displays the whole app folder, which involves digging into folders to find the actual app because I have nothing else to do. Needs to be customizable at least pls.
'All My Files' feature in the finder is a terrifiing experience. Have yet to find a purpose except induced schizophrenia.
Memory leaks poopin all over your RAM?..FCPX having heart attacks often? Could go on..but basically its not that mind blowing so far.
I dont want my OS to mimic an Maxi-I-pad!
positve: OS restarted in 12 seconds last time from the chime.. (interested in other restart times, pls post)
Lion has again presented another set of ways to do the same tasks. Do we really need so many ways to navigate, launch, search and operate? Apple can do better.

  • Thinking about getting Lion server when it comes out?

I am truly thinking of getting Lion server when it comes out.  After reading the information on the web site, it looks as if I need to have Snow Leopard Server first.  I know it's early but just wanted to know so I know how I wish to do it.  Any feedback would be helpful, thanks.  Also what are your thoughts on Snow Leopard Server?

10.6 server runs great and has many customizable options.
10.7 server will have a more simple layout to make it easier for the small office manger to use.
To get 10.7 server from what i understand is you need to have at least 10.6.6 client. Then you can upgrade to Lion for $30. Once the lion client is installed you can then install the server tools which is $50.

  • Thinking about switching to Mac from Windows, Good Idea?

I've always had a PC and I've never really used or work with a Mac.  I'm a little questionable about buying one.  What all do I need to know about Macs?  I plan on using it for college and personal reasons. I hardly do anything outside of my house with my laptop. I've got an iPad and an iPhone which is what lead me to buying a Mac. I've done some research myself, but I don't know whether the Macbook Air or the Macbook Pro would be better for my uses.  Is it better to go for the 512GB flash storage or should the 256GB work out fine? I've got a lot of questions, so sorry in advance.
    Thanks for the help!

Storage size depends on use. If you store a huge photo and video library, go with the 256GB.

i have a mac and am thinking about upgrading from snowlepard to lion , is it a good idea and hard to adapt to

This is my "About This Mac" ... it shows I have Intel i7 CPU.  If you are running SL, you at least have Intel, but would need at least Core2Duo an 2 GB (most people suggest 4 GB) RAM.
If you want to run Lion, remember that the discussions in this forum from last summer when Lion first came out (and since) were highly charged at times.  Certain features that vanished or were added caused great heartache for some.  Others love Lion, though.  And some live with the changes waiting for any fixes they would desire.
Any PPC (PowerPC) applications you depend upon will not work under Lion.  Use this page to see what applications will not run:  http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
    AND
Recall that you can clone your SL to an external disk to keep it safe.  Then you can "experiment with" the new OSX (Lion or ML) until you know it works for you while still having your old SL safe in case you need it.
    Good luck.

  • I've been reading the comments re FCPX on MacBook Pro and now I'm scared. I'm taking a class now and thinking about buying to do videos for nonprofits. Won't be fancy stuff, but now wonder if it's a good choice. Also, heard Apple will drop support. Help?

I've been reading the comments re FCPX on MacBook Pro and now I'm scared. I'm taking a class in FCPX and thinking about buying to do videos for nonprofits. Won't be fancy stuff, but now wonder if it's a good choice. Also, a classmate who was in CA last weekend said he heard that Apple will drop support of FCPX. Any truth? Advice?. I'm on 10.7.4 with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz. Thanks.

While it is against the TOU of these boards to speculate on future products/updates what Thomas said is right: FCPX is quite a new product and it doesn't make any sense to drop it now.
The only thing that MIGHT get dropped at a certain point is support for older hardware/OS as FCP X progresses.

if SIRI application works on iphone 4? if there is any way for ask using iphone 4 can have this application? just let ask know if will work or not, because if not so we will not think about it. please somebody answer my question. my iphone 4 are already update for iOS 5. I'm searching in the internet forum some are saying that it's only work if your iphone are jelbreak, and the problem is i don't want my iphone to be jelbreak. thanks for reading my question. and please send the question on my email many thanks....

What else is there? There's Siri, A5 chip, 8MP camera, intelligent switching between antennas. Those are the only new things in the 4S. Like I said, if Siri was on the 4, fewer would buy the 4S. Second, the 4 is discontinued to make room for the 4S, so there will be no updates exclusively for the 4. Third, I never trust any reports on the Internet unless it comes directly from the company (in this case, Apple).

  • Is mountain lion any good?

For me it is the cure to all the slowness and cpu-hogging that was in Lion 10.7.4.
ML is noticeable faster and so far rock-solid; everything seems to work as advertised.
Core2Duo 2.10Ghz, 4GB of Ram. Enoughto have  the ilife11 apps and iwork09 all open and surf the internet simultanously.
So, quite good at scaling cpu / ram per process. Lion would crawl then.

Actually you could get student discount from apple and a 10% dicksmith with limited time and I think jb hi fi gives even better discount. But lets see what other people think?

  • I am thinking about replacing my hard drive with one with more cap  because at 160 GB, it's almost full.Any particular brand I should pick?

Also thinking  about upgrading  my RAM, from 2GB to 4GB.   Should I go with mechanical or solid state for the hard drive or both?

SSDs will bring you a better performance than normal hard drives. If you can afford one and you think that you will use your computer for some years more, go for one. If not, a 7200 rpm HDD will also improve performance.
You can buy a hard drive in OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ HGST drives have a good reputation and they are cheap

  • How do I eject (or get out somehow) a mini cd I slid into my MacBook Pro CD slot (rather stupidly not thinking about its small size not being a good fit)?

How do I eject (or get out somehow) a mini cd (3" size) which I slid into my MacBook Pro's CD slot? (Rather stupidly, I admit, not thinking about its small size keeping it from being a good fit.) And of course, it didn't seat on the cd's spindle, and thus is not being "seen" by the computer as being present when I press the eject button, so nothing happens. Because the CD slot has a membrane covering the slot, I can't see in to locate where it is or to try and slip it out manually, either.
Details about my computer, although I don't know that these are needed, are as follows:
      Model Name:    MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:    MacBookPro8,1
      Processor Name:    Intel Core i5
      Processor Speed:    2.3 GHz
      Number of Processors:    1
      Total Number of Cores:    2
L2 Cache (per Core):    256 KB
      L3 Cache:    3 MB
      Memory:    4 GB
      Boot ROM Version:    MBP81.0047.B27

Thanks for your suggestion, although it didn't work for me. The one that did suggested inserting a sticky note - sticky side down to catch the disk - and slowly pulling it out. I was dubious, but it worked just like magic!

  • I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27" display and a 42" LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best card?

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27” display and a 42” LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs or 1 dvi and 1 vga vs 1 dvi and a mini. I don't do a lot of Final Cut Pro, gaming, etc. I am interested in best value for the graphics card.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • Any good article about reference variables casting ...

    Hi,
I am looking for a good and simple article on the reference variables downcasting (and yes I am searching the Internet too so please do not suggest that).
Please let me know if you know of any good article or if you can explain it well as I am having hard time to figure out when it is right and when it is used incorrectly.
    Thanks,
    Pritchard

Casting conversions are "right" when you need a reference of the particular type AND the underlying object is type-compatible with the declared variable.
    "Downcasting" example:
    Object o = new Object();
String s = (String) o; // BAD! The underlying object is not an instance of String
    Object o = "foo";
    String s = (String) o; // Okay.~
