Thinking about putting Windows XP Pro on my 2011 13" i7 , 32 bit or 64 bit?

The title pretty much explains what I'm looking for feedback on. I understand the benefits of running a 64 bit OS, but any windows use will be light and I won't be likely to run any 64 bit programs in windows. So, would I have any problems with a 32 bit version of XP Pro? I already have a license for that, and I don't believe my key would be valid for a 64 bit install, unless I'm mistaken.
The off chance that someone out there is already sort of doing what I'm going for, is the only reason the Windows partition would exist would be for Crestron control system programming, or QSC / Lectrosonics DSP configurations via crossover ethernet, USB, and USB to serial adapters. Any chance anyones had success doing this with Apple machines? I'm looking at ditching my Acer PC that works assigned to me and with these exceptions, I can do the majority of my work stuff on OSX.

The new Macs do not support XP or Vista full stop - they only support W7 (32 or 64). As far as going around BootCamp there are loads of websites in cyberspace that show how, but get ready for a steep experimentation curve. W7 has Virtual XP in it (all but the least expensive edition) for those applications you hate to give up. Parallels (about $80) will allow XP right on OSX and is quite sophisticated and popular - no partition needed.

    Hi:
If you make your set of W8.1 recovery media in case something goes wrong, you can find the W7 x64 drivers you need for your model at the link below.  Do not use any of the BIOS or firmware files from this model on yours.

You will also have to go into the BIOS, enable legacy mode and disable secure boot in order to install and run windows 7.

2.4ghz is plenty of processing, if it means you'll save money over the 2.7ghz. I'd have suggested 2.7 if you also do heavy video editing/rendering using FCP, etc... but the spec you have is plenty

  • Putting Windows 8 on MBP Early 2011 by upgrading

Hello! I am trying to put Windows 8 on my MacBook Pro using an ISO in Bootcamp, however the early 2011 models do not support this. I am able to install Windows 7 using this method though, and I was wondering if I can upgrade to Windows 8 from there without buying the install disc. I read that my model does support upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8, but do I need some sort of disc for that or is it just a quick download from the Internet or can I use a Windows 8 ISO file from there?
    Thanks!

I guess my problem is that my dvds are not "bootable". Does anyone know how to make a dvd-r bootable on a macbook pro like mine? I guess when I burned the dvds with the ISOs on them, it simply copied the ISO over without being able to boot it. I also tried converting the .iso to a .cdr when burning but that didn't seem to work either. I've tried searching online but I can't find a way to do it that works for my hardware.

  • Advice on what Mac to get? Thinking about either a Mac Pro or iMac...

I am a graphic designer. I have a Power Mac G5 (older model before Intel) at home. I love it! Want to upgrade but it works for now. Anyways at work (I am the only designer) everyone uses a PC (including me) but I am getting my Christmas gift. They will be ordering me a new Mac! Problem is I'd like some advice as to what I should get. I was originally thinking of the Mac Pro G5 (tower) but then started wondering if an iMac would be a better option. Most of what I do is Adobe Creative Suite programs (but currently I have so many problems with it taking forever to open and save some of the files I am working with especially in Illustrator I am working on a map that is about 21,000 KB). We will be upgrading to CS4. I want to get something that will last for several years and speed up my time. I become impatient when having to wait on my computer to save or edit something. Also, is there any advice on connecting to a windows network. I am not an IT type and everyone here is familiar to Windows. Thanks!

Mac Pro is the only answer. And like already said, hold on for end January and MacWorld Expo to see what might come along. Intel promises great things in the next few months, the floating point arithmetic spec for the new Intel Nehalem processors show nearly a 100% increase in speed from the current top-end Penryn processors:
    http://www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/processors/world-exclusive-in tel-s-dual-socket-nehalem-ep-platform-benchmarked-487131
And you may start to see 4-core processors even in the iMacs. This is the Intel way forward, more cores, 6 cores, 8 cores, up to 80 cores, but little increase in clock speed over 3GHz.
Can't promise Mac Pro will get the new processors in January, could be Snow Leopard time, a very late xmas present then.

  • Question about the Windows XP Pro downgrade

I have been at an endless debate with myself when shopping for a new notebook.  I will either purchase a Macbook, or a Thinkpad T400.  First of all, I would like anyone's input on the Thinkpads in general, or on this model of anyone owns one.  My primary motivation to get a PC is the fact that Macbooks (I don't have enough $$$ for a Pro) do not have a standalone graphics card.  The major dissapointment I find with the Thinkpads is that I cannot simply select "Windows Xp Professional" as my OS.  I see the option to buy Vista Ultimate with a downgrade CD for XP Pro, but I am skeptical.  My real question is, does the "downgrade" CD give me an authentic version of XP professional, or does it still carry the characteristics of Vista (resource hog) and is just simply rearranged to appear like Windows XP?  Thanks for the input.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    thetoolhead, welcome to the forum,
with the downgrade cds you get a full blown version of XP complete with all necessary drivers and Lenovo TVTs. As the XP is created with a Volume Licence there is no need for activation.

  • Thinking about getting a new macbook pro, just a few questions first --

    Hey guys,
I've been a mac user for about 5 years now and I love them. I've had a white 2.0 c2d macbook for about a year now. I primarily used this macbook for work, and my PC desktop for occasional games. I was thinking about getting a mac pro to do some gaming since my PC desktop broke about 2 months ago, but recently I've been getting more expenses so my wallet has grown thinner. So now I don't really have enough cash to get the mac pro. I also can't sell the macbook for a mac pro because I need something mobile for work. What I can do though is sell my macbook and get a macbook pro.
My question to you guys is, how do you like your macbook pro as a desktop replacement? I have a dell 2407-HC monitor as well to use with it. Does it game well over boot camp? I know cider hasn't yielded good performance, so please stick to bootcamp reviews. I'm not looking at anything really really intense, as I don't really have time to do as much gaming as I used to, but it'd be nice if it could run the orange box (mostly team fortress 2), dawn of war dark crusade, assassin's creed (when it comes out), and possibly the warhammer online mmo or age of conan mmo.
The other question is whether or not I should wait for a new one. Macrumors says that it's been about 150 days, and the macbook pros are updated every 180 days or so. I've already waited a few months since my desktop broke to see if the mac pro was going to be updated for penryn, but now the situation has changed, and now it looks like I might have to wait if I want a macbook pro. So, to wait or not to wait?
Any other opinions are welcome as well. Thanks.

    What's the beneift of buying 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 instead of 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7?
Benefit of the QUAD core and the BASE UNIT 13" is extra cores for "heavy" photo and video editing and dedicated graphics
On 95% of things you wouldnt notice a difference, web viewing, typing, youtube, etc. Simple APPS

The 2.6 is DUAL CORE, not quad core.
    On the top model:
    Intel Iris Pro Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switching

  • Windows XP Pro on MacBook Pro with 'external drive'!?

I don't want to load Windows XP Pro on the MBP ... it will take up too much space - I'm running Final Cut Studio and Logic Audio.
Can I put Windows XP Pro on a SEPARATE DRIVE, along with the few apps I want to use in Windows ... and then BOOT from that drive when I want to work in Windows?
And would there be something specific I have to watch out for?
Is there a good article somewhere about running Windows on the Mac Intel? That would help my technical guy create the bootable Windows\Mac Intel version external drive?
    Thank you,
    Ben

    Thank you Blue,
I'm awaiting my new Final Cut Pro Studio Universal disks, and then my Logic Audio 'Universal' disk ... I don't think I'm going to have a lot of room to play with.
I'm already eyeing the 120 gig drive.
But, actually, I'm not sure I want to have Windows in any way connected to this computer. The idea makes me nervous.
    All the best,
    Ben

  • How do I install photoshop 3.0 onto windows 7 pro? Error message says it's not compatible. I'm upgrading from Windows XP.

I have to start with my first photoshop to upgrade to my latest version, but I can't because of incompatibility issues.  Is there a way around this?  Is there something that I need to change in windows 7 pro to accept photoshop 3.0?

Unfortunately, I'm talking about the Photoshop 3.0 from 20 years ago.  I bought it during the "big hair" years, while I was still a toddler.  I think that my Windows 7 Pro is x86.  I do remember seeing something about 32-bit in the error message.  Does this mean that I'm screwed and won't be able to transfer my Photoshop program from my old pc to my new pc?

  • Installing Windows XP Pro via Boot Camp

Does anyone have any do's and dont's about installing Windows XP Pro on a 20" IMAC (OS X 10.5.7) via Boot Camp. All I want to have on the partition is Quickbooks Pro 2009, Anti Virus Program and possibly PC version of Office,

Have you tried emulation software, such as Parallels or VMFusion? None of the programs you list are overly intensive, so you may be able to get them working fine in an emulator--which means you wouldn't have to restart the machine to use those programs. Both of the programs I listed offer free trials.
Additionally, there's a few free options that are similar to MS Office that work on the Mac. NeoOffice & OpenOffice are the first that come to mind.
If you do choose to go with BootCamp, here's some pointers:
    1) Get your data backed up at least once before you do anything
    2) Only use the BootCamp Assistant to partition the drive and/or delete the partition
    3) Go for free anti-virus, such as AVG Free. It does the job just fine.
    4) Make sure you follow the BootCamp instructions carefully--if you don't, you'll find that your OS X partition mysteriously vanishes.
    Good luck!

  • Itunes installed on Windows xp Pro 64 bit

I just built a new computer using an AMD 64x2 processor. The operating system is Windows XP Pro 64. I used Itunes on my old 32 bit xp, but now I can't get Itunes installed on the 64. Is there a different driver I need to install and if so where can I get it.

Here's a tip from another user that might work; I can't vouch for it myself:
If you've got Vista x64, you need to open a Command Prompt box and run the command there, changing directories first:
    cd c:\windows\SysWOW64
    regsvr32 /u vbscript.dll
You'll also need to configure a symlink to help iTunes find Quicktime:
    mkdir "c:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime"
    mklink /d "c:\Program Files\QuickTime" "c:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime"
After installation, you should probably close the Big Fat VBScript Security Hole:
    regsvr32 /u vbscript.dll
    Hope that helps.

  • No sound in Windows 7 Pro

    Hi,
I installed windows 7 pro to my 2011 imac but I cannot install the IDT Sigma Tel driver. I have no sound in Windows 7 but sound drivers seems to be installed. I tried all possible ways to fix it but there is no solution so far. Can you help me with that?

And still no one wants to provide a solution for this. Great work Apple, you are very helpful !!!!

  • I am thinking to upgrade my MacBook Pro

I am thinking to upgrade my MacBook Pro (Winter & Fall 2011) from 4GB to 8GB. Wondering that is this RAM is the right RAM for my MacBook Pro.
    http://store.apple.com/my/product/MD633G/A
And if it is so, how should I replace it? And if I did myself, will it void warranty?

    Use this instead:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_133 3MHz_SDRAM
Installation is easy, as I did it myself.
ifixit.com and macsales.com have videos, but it basiclly involves removing the screws on the bottom (note where they came from ... postition is important), swapping the RAM, then replacing the bottom and screws.  View the guides anyway.
Oh ... needless to say "does not void the warranty".  I like warranties for my system.

  • THinking about the switch from PC to Mac Pro

I'm looking at a configuration of two 2.8 quad-core with 2 gb ram from Apple, 6 gb ram from 3rd party, a single 750 SATA drive and Final Cut 2 Studio, and running VMWare Fusion for running Windows apps, and software development tools (Windows world). I have been doing a fair amount of video editing/processing, and see that growing - between this increase, and Windows Vista, I think the Mac world may be my best choice - I would run the Windows apps under Windows XP.
The Apple Store recommended going with 2 x ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB cards - I will be running with dual monitors, and the biggest demand will come from Final Cut 2. Is there a better choice to be made for the money?
Anybody see any flags raised by what I say I want to do, and the hardware I'm thinking about?
I debated the value in the second Quad core - whether the Final Cut 2 Studio software was written to take adavantage of multiple cores. I'm leaning toward the second quad core since the studio is most likely separate apps, and there might be some benefit provided the second quad core via the OS. Any thoughts on this?
The Ram and hard drives are too pricey from Apple - any suggestions on good third party supplier for the ram chips - I know they need to meet the Apple specs, but assume some mfgs have had a better production/quality history than others.
Any input on this is appreaciated.
    Michael

    Hatter,
The configuration is close - I like both of your suggestions on the graphics card and the boot drive - Apple won't add the Radeon 3870 card, nor the Velocity Raptor drive. So, if I buy the 3870 and Velocity Raptor from OWC, there is a decision I would have to make with regard to what I buy from Apple.
I'd like to continue the process, listing my thoughts, hoping to get more good feedback.
I'm leaning towards buying Apple's standard graphics card (Radeon 2600), and use it for lower demand activities - I figure I can always upgrade it at a later date if the performance is frustrating - I'll have a good comparison with the 3870, so the contrast should be apparent. I'm thinking about the standard 320 g drive, since the extra cost ($50 for 500g, or $150 for 750g) doesn't make sense with the Caviar Black priced at ~$150.
So, I would be getting a machine with the OS sitting on the 320g drive. *Is there a good strategy for adding the Velocity Raptor, making it my boot drive?*
I'm assuming I will get the OS on disc - is this true?
Lastly, I'm looking at the timing of purchasing. I debated on waiting to buy until after MacWorld 2009, but plan on buying prior to the event. My thought was to avoid any issues that come with new releases - adding another layer of issues without knowing what is "normal behavior" isn't worth the increased functionality. In the PC world, sales abound at the end of quarter, and prior to new release. *Is it worth waiting a little while hoping Apple will discount the Mac Pro? Or is this unlikely??*
Again, thanks for all of the great suggestions.
    Michael

  • I am trying to install Corel Draw x5 on windows xp pro via Parallels 7 and having an issue . it states about 99% through the install that it is missing a file any suggestions?

I am trying to install Corel Draw x5 on my new iMAC. I am trying to install it on windows XP Pro via Parallels 7. I have already installed some other programs without any issues so this has me puzzled. whenever the install reaches about 99% complete it says it can not find 2 files(sorry I cant recall what it was).

The error message I get is that iTunes is trying to incorrectly open Visual C services.
Is there somebody at Apple who actually read these things or are we on our own without any iTunes?
